John's voice sounds as good as it did the first time I heard him sing this song on the John Hartford tribute album. Hauntingly beautiful.

I've been a fan of John in all of his iterations since the late 1970s. He never fails to deliver more talent than most could ever dream to possess.

"Dark as a Dungeon"! Written in 1946, by Merle Travis! And beautifully performed by one of the greatest vocalists I've ever heard!

This is a perfect example of a great , great, example of one of the best singers ever. that either was poorly managed or not ever managed,
His only down fall was being in bluegrass music, his voice should have been in Pop, or rock, country shunned him, cuz bluegrass singers very limited or none on country charts . Sad cuz he's the best singer now at 69-70 still sounding great , love you, Johnny C

John Cowan continues to have the amazing vocal. This is with Darin and Brooke Aldridge, not Doobie brothers. Oh, and of course, Miss Carley Arrowood. Very well done folks.

I have been listening to John since Winfield in 1974, and then for years and years at Telluride, and his voice is still so powerful. When he auditioned as a bass player for New Grass Revival in 74' Sam Bush said that just hearing him tune his bass they new that he was in, and then when he asked Sam if he could sing a tune, Sam said that he was the lead singer for NGR, but half way through the song, Sam said, "well I WAS the lead singer". Here is "Dark as a Dudgeon" with NGR.

No one in my personal opinion can even remotely touch this man vocally. Sorry Steve Perry.

I started out hating this version, it's slow tempo and what seemed like Cowan's diva-like vocal pyrotechnics, but I warmed to it, especially, I admit, when he made the connection to diamond miners in South Africa. I first encountered the song through the Weavers, so I'm used to it as a protest song, and when Cowan made a nod in that direction, it started working for me, including both the tempo and his admittedly superb voice.
