    What I love about sandy/dusty Tomb Kings and these kinds of Necrons is that drybrushing actually makes the model look better, due to the rough texture actually being desirable.
    So, rather than being a method that sacrifices the quality of the paint job for time and ease, drybrushing actually ends up being an all-round win.
    This applies to wooden/bark things like Sylvaneth as well...

    This is absolutely the theme I'm going with for all the new Necrons in the 9th edition starter box set.
    I fell in love with them the moment I saw them on one of your battle reports. Though I'm considering making a couple modifications and would like your thoughts. Primarily, doing the glow effect with Citadel's Calledor Sky, then highlighted with Teclis Blue, followed with a top-most highlight of Ulthuan Grey, and finished with the Guilliman Blue recess shading. I'm also considering PVA gluing sand and rocks to the mini before priming and sponging on some leadbelcher to give the effect of areas that the caked-on sand is starting to come off.

      Yo! That's true, it certainly is a big step, but it's not a necessary one. Getting "good" with an airbrush takes just as long, if not longer, than getting good with a brush.

    If you want to stop that orange peel effect from the dry brushing over the glowing areas you'll have to completely avoid those areas when priming by masking them off with either masking fluid or some form of putty. Then you'll want to brush on a layer of blue then very lightly sand/polish it flat. (polish if the paint is still soft) You should end up with a near perfectly smooth base, it should look like a low gloss even though its matt paint. After that paint blue with layers of wash.
    The gloss effect will disappear at this stage but that is only due to microscopic bumps from the wash. continue your steps from here. You will find that the dry brushing will look as if it was airbrushed on.
    I only reccomend doing this just for the challenge or for learning how to do a candy finish because it is basically the same steps ; trying to create a perfectly flat coat.
    Using air cans for primer will cause orange peeling it's just a fact. but you can also sand back can primer very easily without fear of tearing the paint as is possible with layering.
    i sand all my can primed minis, it really doesn't take as long as it sounds 5 passes over an area is usually fine and that takes about 1 second. sanding off a 28mm mini usually takes about 1 min.
    What you will find when doing this is how easy it is to engrave you're own extra details into your minis. but that's another story.

    • @MidwinterMinis
      @MidwinterMinis  5 лет назад +1

      Woah mama, those are some pro tips. What method do you use to sand the primer? Fine grain sandpaper?

    • @danielchalmers9815
      @danielchalmers9815 5 лет назад

      Sponged back fine grain. Minimum 400 grit. The higher you go in grit the more you need to sand and the faster the sponge will loose sand. Try to avoid the sand 'paper' sponges with paper glued to the sponge as the sharp edges of miniatures can tear it and the paper tries to retain its shape. Instead look for 'sand sponges' that's with the fine sand adhered directly to the sponge.
      It allows for better sanding on detail areas as the sponge will conform to the shape of the miniature and remove the orange peel evenly.

    Looks pretty nice I would of liked to see you add the "light" to the 4 ends facing the center glowing thing also maybe working out just a bit of light on those ball joints and on the curve of those hoses would of looked really good.

      I like the effect you have here, not too over the top. Just needed a refresher as had a long break of a few years from painting. Strangely I seem to be far better at it than I used to be, the Ultramine Primeris guys are coming out really nicely and figured on the hellblasters I would have some fun with a bit of OSL. Hopefully I don't wreck them with the attempted glow! P.S add some tweezers to your painting kit for those pesky hairs :-)

      The extra work of the glow effect balances out the super easy stone effect though, so it'll not any extra time than a normal speed-paint army :)

    would love to see you do this with Green variants and Red-Orange variants. I REALLY wanna try making good chaos power weapons that match my red/orange plasma weapons. i can handle doing green to some effect, but i really want my chaos power weapons to look energized, not magma or fiery.

    I just got back into painting, I'm actually awaiting my first order of a 50 color warpaint set and batch of D&D minis right now. Should be here in two days. I have not painted in 34 years. I saw this effect in a few videos and was wondering how the hell they did it. I thought it would be a great spell effect.

    Great use of translucent Glow-Paints! It would have been nice to do the Art some justice by firing it up with a bright light before a very brief _Showcase_ clip at the end, with subdued lighting and with the glow at maximum when filming. Thanks for the up!
