@@ArtisOpus yes quite. You can also even take a picture like a reference photo and have it color match based on what paint range you use. I have found it very helpful.
I would love to see you do a plasma gun like this. I find the tiny area of the gun, plus the nooks you have to reach for the OSL on the body makes it trickier than a flat door or wall. It's the intricate shapes of a human-shaped mini that I struggle with. Or even to take it to the extreme, something tiny like glowing eyes or lasers on a gun.
This was meditative, thanks. I have another technique you can try: Paint light sources white, then dry-brush white in multiple passes for all areas of the glow. Then paint over all of it with contrast paint. It will take what is basically a pure white light effect and colorize it.
I’d really like to see a full focus video on how to execute a SlapChop+++ base (that emulates an airbrush base) w’ Series D brushes on a regular size, somewhat fiddly type w’ swords & spikes and what not, infantry model. I often struggle to use the right size brush for such models. A general guideline on what type of application (not just the SlapChop base) requires what size brush could be an extension to that tutorial. Got a whole set of Series D’s, but only managed to source (through many hoops) a size 4 & 2 to the Series S…but I can tell so much that they are becoming my favourite brushes over my Rapha 8404’s. Great suggestions man, we're focussing on the fundamentals, and brush (size/style) choice is a foundation-level skill for sure. Thanks for the input, this already has a few likes, so people agree!
OSL is definitely less intimidating now! Before starting the next project I might have to give it another try :) The bonus ending was a very nice addition.
So glad dude, it's definitely worth another try! It's one of those things where a few attempts with breaks between them seems to make a difference :). Hold the theory in mind, it helps!
Thank you once again Byron! Really informative, and just pushes me to want to pick my brushes up and give it a go. Especially your theme of not letting 'making it perfect' get in the way of actually doing it
Yes, mate! Exactly what we're going for with it, even trying and not quite succeeding will still get you way closer for the next time. Let us know how it goes, Bon Courage!
the freeze frame @13:16 is great! With subtle techniques it feels like you have to already have experience the technique in order to pick up on what's actually happening on screen - like in every sergio calvo airbrush shot where you can tell that a part of the model got wet but I have no idea why it looks so perfect and amazing all the time.
Thanks for showing your process at the end of the video. For everyone just starting to try OSL, it can be so intimidating, worrying about making a mistake, but you showed that you can try different things, and if it’s not what you’re looking for, then just change it up and try again!
This has got to be the best osl video I've seen, as somebody who is colourblind I've always stayed away from osl (I don't use an airbrush), the gradation of colours has always been daunting, but after watching this I think I'll have a go, thanks for this :)
Oh man, thanks so much for the comment, absolutely stoked to have helped you out! The method and steps take preference, and I actually regularly suggest that people photograph their OSL and turn it black and white to assess it (Orc Butt who we referenced does this, too). I have a close buddy who is colour-blind... and he's one of GW's army painters for specialist games (he did some of the brets for old world). As long as he labels his paints and stages clearly he's good, so don't be intimidated, and hold the course! Let us know how it goes (ideally not a reply, YT reply notifications are crap, new comment is best)
@@ArtisOpus thanks so much, I'm definitely trying it soon, just got to update my paint pallette and think of something to try it on. I suffer on shades as I'm red, green, blue colourblind, so from a distance everything is either taken over by the dominant colour or is simply black.
We did have that as a thumb, but weren't sure whether it was an internationally known series :D Our pleasure, buddy, give it a go, don't rush, but don't overthink, if you go wrong and don't know where, it was the last step :) Multiple goes is fine, let us know if it works!
Thx for replying Byron. I think I just had too much paint on my brush and ended up just painting it too thick. Tried it again and it worked perfectly! It looks amazing! You've earned a subscriber!
If it hasn't been suggested already, and since I forgot yesterday/too lazy to read all the comments^^ Your take on how to apply oSL on natural objects, faces etc would be very interesting to see. Whenever/if you got the time (-:
This was incredible, so well-presented and strangely relaxing? I think I've figured out what I've been doing wrong, and now I'm going to have a lot of fun with this technique, thank you so much. 😊
Great video, really enjoying these , very informative and you break it down brilliantly. Just about to prime my into the dark terrain, so hopefully I can try this out . Thanks
Love me some fluorescent paint! I'd love to see a follow up video to the molotow chrome paint, have you learnt anything new working with it, tips & tricks etc. Keep up the great work man!
Aaw man!! Your videos are so good and easy to watch, I love your pace of talking, makes it easy to all grasp and listen to. One nice follow-up to this vid would be on how to venture applying the OSL to a painted mini (such as that cigare smoking orc from the other painter you display in the video), as it is such a daunting moment to add completely different colours to an already painted mini in hope it'll end up a wonderful effect! Thanks for sharing your wisdom 👍👍
Fantastic! thanks for the detailed video, I've always been afraid to try OSL because it often looks over done or not quite right. Gallowdark terrain is the perfect model to do it on
Thank you for this - again a great tutorial on a hard to reach subject, especially without an airbrush. Since you asked for ideas - a way to approach the use of colors in Craftworld Studioesque style. You've approached on the subject a few times, but creating that ambient lighting on a mini is something I'd like to see.
This was a great video- and it looks fantastic. Painting my first army, looking forward to basing, super excited about really getting in to this hobby. I’ve been binging through your videos lately and I can’t wait to try some of these techniques out.
Lol, I just now realized this is the Artis Opus channel, having my new D&M box in front of my face as the logo passed by... xD Sometimes it takes a lot to connect A and B, haha.
You know you've nailed the OSL when the observer needs a second take to see if there is really a light source. My FLGS had some terrain setup that when I first saw it I went looking for the wiring. 😂
Awesome video, the only complain I have is on the last example, the door would 100% be lightly lighted. Light bounces around and when it hits a suface it gets reflected even if the surface is not shiny. Shiny just means higher reflection (I'm simplying here). Being in a nook with 2 walls in view of the light there would be a reflection of a combination of the wall color and the light on the door and the rest of the nook. It's easier to visualize with a 3d software to be honest but it's definetly there. This way the door just looks like it's missing a part to allow for integration in the scene
As always, amazing work! Would love to see you tackle a challenge on how to change paint properties to make them better for drybrushing. For example using mediums, etc. to make matt paints better for dry brushing to get a smoother result then you otherwise would. Also a question, do you get better results with gel based paints or regular medium paints?
Top-notch suggestion here, and something I am thinking about a lot at the moment... For reasons 👀👀👀... Regarding the mediums/base, it's mostly just about whether the paint is high quality or not, IMO, you *know* whether you're using good paint or not, instantly, and as long as it's not paint that takes far too long/too little to dry, it's generally more reliant on the quality of the base, not the type. This is something I'm still learning, though :)
Awesome Video! This really helps, will definitely rewatch to paint terrain later this year. What i would love to see next is an OSL video with OSL on a NMM metal or hardplastic (like in scifi armor) surface in your drybrushing style. Better still, a fantasy and a scifi version, on minis, magic/fire or energy effects respectively. Will you take up this challenge? Surely will help not only Infinity players like myself, but should also be interesting for 40k and lots of other games!
Great video! I'm really really tempted to try this on an admech army, thinking of a night setting basing everything in a colour like huldra blue and working up from that with a light source coming from the base. I mean if you really want to do a test model I won't mind 😜😂
I mean, as far as bases for armies done with glow, it's really strong, you can contrast up to firey, or just stick with cool, plus you can glaze it back in if things get chalky!
Something I’ve used when doing osl on heavily rusted and textured terrain is shine coloured leds on to the model to get accurate tonel changes depending on what colour the light is hitting. This obv over the top but that’s just me
Definitely using this for the necromunda set I've picked up. I'd love to see how you would tackle the Ash Wastes Nomads. I find them to be a pretty tricky faction to get right.
Pretty specific request but I'd really like to see this (the purple in particular) done as a nighthaunt scheme. I've been thinking about a purple scheme going from dark purple at the top down through pinks into a white down the bottom near the tendrils. Plus it being a more smooth surface with less sharp edges would be cool to see for this effect
So many YT-ers advise people to get make-up brushes and use them because they're cheaper and work just as well. I have to strongly disagree. Dry brush brushes work sooo much better imo. Thanks for the tips!!
Our pleasure, man, plenty more coming soon! Obviously I'm a little biased having designed D... But I can't help thinking that it's not a coincidence that a lot of the people recommending them are still using paper towels, not involving moisture, and also are specifying 'cheap' makeup brushes. It's a good thing though, more people trying drybrushing is always better, and they'll find the light eventually when they realise how smooth it's possible to go (or get bored of replacing and relearning their brushes on repeat, rather than once every 2 years)
@@ArtisOpus I'd like to see you do a tutorial on drybrushing/stippling armor for Deathguard and Putrid Blightkings or any Nurgle models with some armor
Your Series D brushes are definitely the best dry brush brushes. I killed mine through over use, then one of my cats got hold of the new one and chewed it up. I was skint so I bout the ones from The Army Painter, they are a very poor version of your brushes. I have used them twice, they now live in my rubbish drawer. I'm waiting on my new Series D set from Element Games 👍
You can absolutely get this engraved, and it'd be one of the more sensible things we've seen 😅 store.artis-opus.com/products/series-d-drybrush-set-deluxe-5-slot It's not in-your-face, but there's two optional engrave bits on the right of the product screen. Cheers, Darren!
Great video, thank you 😄 what is in the little pot you dip the dry brush in? It's first time im watching one of your videos so it might have been covered earlier.
Me: Man what a great video! It looks so easy and amazing! Tries it: Ends up looking like a serial killer broke into my house and murdered someone all over my terrain! Ps: Great video I'm just a terrible painter!
Haa! What # stage would you say it went wrong at man? Let's see if we can pin it down and help. Don't reply to this, make a new comment, YT is awful for reply notifications
aaaaannnd again, a very helphul ans wonderful video ! thanks for the guidance :p staying in the OSL part, but more like the lamp you have done at the end, could you show us how would glow something with less power like a candle , like on a shelf or some books and something aroung it as well like some furniture, walls, or "worse" something that's not that straight like a face or a body part ? cause the glow is sure bright very near the source but fade away very quickly I'd love to see like a candle on a table with someone reading a book ^^
a little less then 4000 subs to go come on people hit that button its worth it if you wanna be one of the cool kids. (hopefully peer pressure still works)
It's our 'Dampening Pad' It's not cleaning buddy, it's for releasing a small (predictable) amounts of moisture into the brush to keep the painting smooth, although that does aid the cleaning you see me doing on my palette. It's part of all of our Drybrush sets store.artis-opus.com/collections/series-d-drybrushing
id use AK white.. i have found that the valejo white comes out chalky sometimes. the AK white is god damn butter smooth. like oh my god. its like and ink but paint.
This is the best video for OSL using a paint brush. I understand the concept, the method and what tool is best way better now. BUT is it possible to OSL like this on figure that isn't all black? For example how do you OSL like this on a figure with a face and hair and clothes. Can you just slap on the paint the "same" way and notice a difference? Thanks for this video man. I'll have to tag you when I get mine done up.
I love the videos. I find then so helpful. I have a deff dread I'm painting and it has a light under the faceplate. I want to make it look like its glowing but I don't want to ruin my model.. any advice?
You absolutely can, it's just slightly more tricky and less forgiving (check Rich Gray's instagram, or other top-level painters, plenty of white helmets out there) instagram.com/daemonrich/?hl=en-gb
@ArtisOpus Thanks for this helps with OSL on to dark colours but could you do something with OSL on to a white background please. I have a snow based battlefield and white buildings so trying to do lights on to white comes out horribly. Im obviously doing something wrong but would love a short guide to doing this on to white. Thanks.
Just recently got into miniatures and painting. Found your channel and really appreciate your style of teaching, so thanks! Question on contrast paints: have you tried any of the options out there aside from the citadel paints? If so, what are your thoughts?
Id love to see a way to do osl with only contrast paints if thats possible. Would be interesting how it can work with slap chop. I cant find many videos on how to do osl with slapchop
Hey buddy, you can definitely pull it off using slapchop style, I'd recommend 'finishing' the mini, painting the source white, and then gently drybrushing 'away' from it with white, followed by a couple of thinned contrast glazes over the top, or a product like tesseract glow, which is quite similar to a contrast anyway.
@@ArtisOpus thank you for this. Would be interesting to see a video on it. Do you know if citadel has other paints similar to tesseract glow that aren't green? I plan on painting a game called Tamashii and it will be my first time painting minis. I want a couple colors of good fluorescent paint that works with cyberpunk neon scheme of the game.
Great tutorial! Your videos are very valuable! I wonder though, if I prepare some different paint blobs on a dry palette, they will be dried up in few minutes. Are you adding some retarder to keep them fresh?
How/would you modify things if going onto a lighter base colour? Like having a weapon glow cast on a yellow imperial fist or eldar or something like that?
So, you go from blue green to yellow green. Where would I come from for blue? And where would I come from for yellow? Not sure of direction on the colour wheel.

@@ArtisOpus looking forward to the results of those reasons :D
This 6 step color blend for doing osl is also how i do the skin for my model! Pick 6 colors and blend to get my intermediate color transitions
Something I’ve used when doing osl on heavily rusted and textured terrain is shine coloured leds on to the model to get accurate tonel changes depending on what colour the light is hitting. This obv over the top but that’s just me
It's something I have thought about, and something that pro-painters use, it's good advice!
brilliant! thank you.
No worries, buddy!
Definitely using this for the necromunda set I've picked up. I'd love to see how you would tackle the Ash Wastes Nomads. I find them to be a pretty tricky faction to get right.
Airbrush transparent the appropriate paint over white. Its that easy! Lol all kidding aside this was fantastic.
This is neat !!!
It's a good thing though, more people trying drybrushing is always better, and they'll find the light eventually when they realise how smooth it's possible to go (or get bored of replacing and relearning their brushes on repeat, rather than once every 2 years)
Came for the OSL, stayed for the Duck.
Our Sensei 🥰🦆
SHOW US THE TAU MODEL
👀👀👀👀
Could we call the color wheel method as the Cha Cha method? 2 hops this time! 👏2 hops this time! 👏
One and two, cha cha cha! I'm down :D
RIP DJ Casper - May you forever "Cha Cha, real smooth" among the stars 🫡
Always appreciative of any rubber duck
Are you going to be making a tutorial on painting Nurgle armor?
It's been so long since we did nurgle! Any excuse is a good one... Although I just end up drawn to great unclean ones 🤣
@@ArtisOpus I'd like to see you do a tutorial on drybrushing/stippling armor for Deathguard and Putrid Blightkings or any Nurgle models with some armor
WOW
Your Series D brushes are definitely the best dry brush brushes. I killed mine through over use, then one of my cats got hold of the new one and chewed it up. I was skint so I bout the ones from The Army Painter, they are a very poor version of your brushes. I have used them twice, they now live in my rubbish drawer. I'm waiting on my new Series D set from Element Games 👍
@artisopus Byron can i get a set of series D brushes but have the case custom engraved to say DEEEZZZ!!!? I'm asking the real questions.
They do offer an engraving service 😊
You can absolutely get this engraved, and it'd be one of the more sensible things we've seen 😅
store.artis-opus.com/products/series-d-drybrush-set-deluxe-5-slot
It's not in-your-face, but there's two optional engrave bits on the right of the product screen.
Cheers, Darren!
I am thinking of doing HH night lords with osl on the eye lenses and power sources and the rest in black/gray
Great video, thank you 😄 what is in the little pot you dip the dry brush in? It's first time im watching one of your videos so it might have been covered earlier.
Could we get a video on painting black feathers like that of a crow or raven? I can't get it to ever look right.
You and me both, buddy, this'll need some research!
Great video...but i want ro know where you find that beautiful display cases behind you?
We designed them :) (you can still late pledge, before they go to retail)

aaaaannnd again, a very helphul ans wonderful video ! thanks for the guidance :p
staying in the OSL part, but more like the lamp you have done at the end, could you show us how would glow something with less power like a candle , like on a shelf or some books and something aroung it as well like some furniture, walls, or "worse" something that's not that straight like a face or a body part ?
cause the glow is sure bright very near the source but fade away very quickly
I'd love to see like a candle on a table with someone reading a book ^^
a little less then 4000 subs to go come on people hit that button its worth it if you wanna be one of the cool kids. (hopefully peer pressure still works)
🥰🤞 thanks dude
very nice! what are you using for brush cleaning, is this just a sponge with water?
It's our 'Dampening Pad'
It's not cleaning buddy, it's for releasing a small (predictable) amounts of moisture into the brush to keep the painting smooth, although that does aid the cleaning you see me doing on my palette.
It's part of all of our Drybrush sets

id use AK white.. i have found that the valejo white comes out chalky sometimes. the AK white is god damn butter smooth. like oh my god. its like and ink but paint.
I'll have to give it a go, I love their 3rd gen paints, they're just a little too matte for my painting style (early drybrushing stages)
I want to make it look like its glowing but I don't want to ruin my model.. any advice?
Can you do OSL on a lighter base rather than something dark being lit up?
You absolutely can, it's just slightly more tricky and less forgiving (check Rich Gray's instagram, or other top-level painters, plenty of white helmets out there)

With the actual light fittings could you use pure white with a diluted green contrast like striking scorpion over the top?
Can you mix fluorescent paint with regular white paint?
Absolutely :) it goes VERY bright/light
Ah I have a question: can I add medium (speedpaint) to any of my (Vallejo) acrylics and it will make a contast-like colour? Thanks!
Absolutely! Likewise you can add paint to your speedpaints to tint/strengthen them (works well with weak ones, like skeleton horde/aethermatic blue)
Great tutorial! Your videos are very valuable!
I wonder though, if I prepare some different paint blobs on a dry palette, they will be dried up in few minutes. Are you adding some retarder to keep them fresh?
Where did you get those mounted wall displays?
How/would you modify things if going onto a lighter base colour? Like having a weapon glow cast on a yellow imperial fist or eldar or something like that?
Did you, at about 13:50, dry brush on some white in order that the next go with green would be brighter? 😮
Of course! It's our magic step 😀
@@ArtisOpus I really coulda done with knowing about that a week ago...🤣😫
So, you go from blue green to yellow green. Where would I come from for blue? And where would I come from for yellow? Not sure of direction on the colour wheel.
Maybe mention for us beginners what OSL is :)
Object Source Lighting
But yeah, would've been nice to include in the title.
:) we cover it pretty early in the vid, but fair point!
