Fantastic review. Your footage looks great! I just bought a CX10 to film hiking and wildlife videos in Colorado. As someone who actually started out using these camcorder style bodies back in the day and switched to large sensor cameras 10 years ago, it's nice to have one of these again.
That's awesome to hear! I also come from a large sensor background but there's so much camcorders can do that DSLR's and mirrorless cameras can't. Best of luck with the new camera.
I couple of things worth mentioning is that the camera can shoot in 10 bit, when most camcorders that size only shoot in 8 bit. That alone would make it qualify for some broadcast work where other small camcorders would be rejected. It also has build in ND filters, which make it easier to get that more cinematic slow shutter speed motion blur. Although this camera doesn't have vlog, it does have a couple of semi flat profiles including Cinelike-D to give more dynamic range and extra flexibility for people who like to colour grade their footage. I'd say an impressive little camera on the whole.
So true. The bit rate on this is incredible and with some natural or well lit scenes, you can achieve some incredibly clear and crisp shots with this camera. It does lack v-log but the cine profiles do allow for some great color range. Thanks for the comment!
I went from a 7K MKII to the CX 10 for a run and gun event/trade show interviews and it is well worth it. Not to mention the size but it can be ready in a few seconds from bag to hand. Battery life is amazing. While it does not do the shallow DOF like a DSLR the easy of use in a hurry and auto focus more than makes up for it.
Your final shots say it all for me. I’ve got a GH5 and the Leica 100-400mm telephoto and the images and video are great but it’s never gonna be as convenient and easy to use as my X2000 when filming wildlife. You just turn it on and your good to go with reliable auto focus, great colour, fantastic zoom reach from what is a really good lens and with the XLR inputs I have to say great audio. It’s still early days for me but I’m enjoying using it that for sure. I look forward to seeing more of what you create with yours 👍
I filmed on a Canon t2i from 2010 to 2018. I upgraded to an A7Sii. Seriously not as happy with it as I was with my Canon. That being said. My point is that I made tons of footage look Cinematic and professional grade looking because I was a filmmaker and didn’t let the camera dictate that. I believe if you controlled your environment a bit, composed your shots well. You could probably achieve great cinematography with a camera like this. I’ve been trying to do my research and go to a camcorder.
Dude my first camera was a t3i and I've been seeking that cinematic gold ever since; I'm sure the t2i was great too. Yeah man I definitely agree with that about the cinematic footage cause I still do a lot of corporate interviews and commercial work that is driven by that cinematic style but most newcomers to the field have been mislead by people saying that DSLR's and mirrorless cameras are the way to go when most steady paychecks are jobs produced by simple repeatable work. That's why camcorders are a very viable option as a reliable, all around work horse camera.
Nice review, since last year I am making video's for a world music & dance festival, Last year I made them with my canon eos 7d MII & older 600D, but in my opinion, both of the dslr's didn't do it so well, this year I'm going to film also at other moments, last year I filmed espacially during the shows and after with the bands & Dj"s. Did you ever had some experience with similar projects? Would you use dslr's or this type of camera? I can use this type for a week via via but I'm not sure yet.
I purchase this camera last week thanks to your last video, haven't took it out the box yet. This weekend I will. The shot of the the rabbit was that a zoom shot?
I'm not actually sure. I'm pretty sure everything was optical that was in this video but I definitely notice the image getting soft in lowlight due to the noise reduction that's built into the camera.
FInally!! I found a good hands on review for the AG-CX10...I have been debating to upgrade my two Canon camcorders XF300 (ancient I know but very realiable) that I use for concerts on stage and other videos that require deep focus and servo zooms and I haven't found a good replacement yet. I have a C100 mk2 and a Canon 90D which are awesome for some type of shooting but not for live concerts or dance shows.I don't think I would shoot always on 4k but I want a camcorder with 18x or 20x optical zoom, good low light (relatively speaking low light-not DSLR capability I know)and that can give you great 1080p (similar OR BETTER than what I get with my Canon XF300)...perhaps I'm asking for too much. I wanted to try this camera but now that my video jobs have been canceled for the Summer it seems, well...I'm reluctant to buy any new equipment.I hope you do more videos soon. I Know that youtube degrades video quality but I'm not sure that the the quality of the video is that great...You did get some "cinematic" like shots for sure but some just look a bit soft...Maybe I'm too spoiled with my Canon C100 mk2! If I had money I would buy the overpriced Canon XF705 but that's too much for me...Are you keeping this camera? Thanks
Thanks for the feedback Erick. To start, I definitely agree about the lowlight and sensor situations. While these camcorders are incredible in so many ways, the small sensor definitely takes a hit on the performance. I would say avoid shooting in those types of situations or shoot with your c100 mk2 instead. BUT, I feel that it is all about the tool and how you use it. I bought this camera for convenience and 4k/60, and it has definitely met those standards. I am keeping this camera, and hopefully will be posting a lot this summer so maybe that will help inform your decision in purchasing. Best of luck in these trying times man!

Thanks. I've never personally used the NX-80 but just going off of the specs, I would still go with the cx-10. My reasoning being the CX-10 offers 4k 60p which I don't believe the Sony offers. That was a huge deciding factor when I bought the CX10. You can also get the cheaper Panasonic HC-X2000 which is basically the same camera with a couple features taken out.
Great video, I had my eye on the baby one in this batch release, the X1500. I was planning on getting the X1500 and add the handle later as I wanted to see how it would work with my Deity V Mic D3 Pro. I ended up getting the older, slightly larger HC-X1 for the larger sensor and the fact that the X1500 was back ordered. While the built in screen isn't great, I use an external monitor to see when outdoors. This unit is new to me and I have used it a couple of times to get a feel for it. I will post a review of that unit soon along with my Nikon Z6 which after getting a cage and other accessories, just took too long to setup and I just wanted something that can be ready faster. Looking for more videos from you and your experience with the new unit.
I feel the exact same way. I have a black magic production 4k and the workflow is horrible with it. It takes 20 minutes just to set up the rig and it looks like it's on life support. These camcorders are easy to use and you can start shooting instantly. Thanks for your comment!
@@mattcolvin8623 That is exactly why I decided to get one. The New version with the built in handle and light caught my attention. I may still pick one up for use during my travels as I like the compactness of the smaller design and by removing the handle and lens hood, it will look like a normal tourist camera so you won't get hassled about permits to film.
Uh that track is smooth and jazzy. That camera is pretty buttery too. Toy don't feel it's a bit bulky in comparison? I would have loved that when i used to run and gun but I mostly vlog now.
Not going to lie, I was a bit concerned about the bulkiness myself, but compared to all of the additional equipment I would need to get the same product if I used a DSLR, it is not that bad at all. For a slightly bigger camera, it definitely has a lot more features than a DSLR or Mirrorless offers.
Good vid so far however, Sony makes smaller camcorders than this one with a larger sensor size. Sensor size is never the issue as their are full size sensor cameras the size of the avg. smart phone. The purpose for using a smaller sensor in a camcorder is stability, heat management, depth of field, and longer focal lengths in a small package (no one is making 24-600mm 1.8, 2.8 full frame lenses, too expensive and big to create) Use case is another factor. Most camcorders are used in professional settings as they deal better with heat in that configuration. The button layout allows for more controls and the overall handling is much better than a traditional DSLR design. Lastly I'd say batteries seem to fit better in an external configuration than internal. All this keeps cost down. Extra, theirs also a law that supposedly makes any camera that can shoot over 30min a camcorder by definition so it also has to do with marketing as to the use of titles.
I am a beginner youtuber planning to get some gears for content creation... Never tried any professional equipments , was confused whether to buy a dslr or camcoder , want to make some good broll videos for travel vlogs, would yoy recommend a camcoder or dslr ?
Hey Kevin! So that's a bit of a tricky question. Personally I really liked the look of dslr's when I first started making videos. The image looks nice right away without needing a deep understanding of film theory. If you are looking for something easy to use though, maybe look into getting a camcorder. Hope this helps!
Absolutely. This is a really good camera for broadcasting and livestreaming. I wouldn't recommend getting the additional NDI access yet but if you are running HDMI or SDI it works perfectly.
I did enjoy this video. Thank you. All the footage samples I've found online seem a little soft to me, but I can't tell if that is RUclips downgrading the quality. Do you feel that the footage out of camera is sharp? And how does it feel in low light (for example, shooting in the forest on an overcast day)?
Hey David. Thanks for commenting. So in some situations, I have found the footage to be slightly soft. This is mostly Low light situations though. If you are shooting in daytime or golden hour situations with ample light, the footage seems crisp to me. I would recommend watching my 2"x20' video which was pretty low light, then watching my Bearfort Mountain video which was mid day/overcast. Very stark difference.
@@raksh9 Hey thanks for the comment. It does seem like that's the case and I guess that could be a good and bad depending on if you are looking to do noise reduction yourself in After Effects. I am happy with it because I bought this camera to ease up my production time so one less thing for me to do is great.
@@mattcolvin8623 Yeah, that makes a lot of sense. I'm trying to figure out if the CX10 fits into my toolkit for doc and corporate work. I ditched the 5D Mark II years ago for the GH3, then GH4, and now the G9, and I love Panasonic files and operation. If only Panasonic put a 1 inch sensor in the CX10, even if it meant losing some zoom range. Their 1 inch camcorders are way too big for my liking!
@@raksh9 So true. I guess it all depends on what kind of work you are doing though. And I couldn't agree more about the 1" sensor. I have been using DSLR's for 7 years and this is a big adjustment but it seems to be getting easier the more I use it. I have used this for some of my 9-5 corporate interview shoots with controlled lighting and it looks great.
Next step up from these little camcorders is not a DSLR, but a cinema camera, like the FS5 M2. DSLR’s are okay for faking the shallow depth of field, but lower bit rates etc compromise the files, and the ergonomics of a DSLR are not ideal. The 1DX M3, for example produces some beautiful files but being wrapped in that awkward stills body (plus its price) is its downfall. If you enjoyed the X1500/X2000/CX10 series, you would love the FS5 M2 with its Super 35 sensor, interchangeable lenses, high frame rates, and gorgeous files :) Meanwhile, Panasonic has made a superb small camcorder and I loved your footage. People too often forget that the camcorder doesn’t finish at the eyepiece or monitor, in fact the most important parts of any camera is the nut between the ears, the story-teller, and the feeling heart just behind the camera body :) This is a short video about the FS5 M2 ruclips.net/video/ARok0NshNfA/видео.html BTW, welcome to the dark side. There are quite a few of us here who came from DSLR’s and discovered why the camcorder form-factor exists and is thriving.
Nice looking video. I did receive my X1500 and optional Handle/XLR Input/Light. Like you, shooting events in high school stadiums, but mainly the marching bands. My first impression with Autofocus is just like yours. It works. While I am not a professional, I aspire to provide much better videos this year, using the X1500 and the now secondary cam, FZ2500.
I couldn't agree more. Something I forgot to mention is you can enable pre roll so if you're filming sports and miss the start of a play, the camera actually will record about 3 seconds before you press record. Definitely look into it if you film high school sports.
You can definitely achieve a film/movie look but it will take some practice. Long focal lengths will definitely help. Also having nice lighting will definitely contribute to that movie feeling.
Thanks, I'm undecided whether to upgrade my Mirrorless or buy one of these "toys"... I'm evaluating the ax700 from Sony because it has a bigger sensor but it doesn't have the 60fps, anyway you can make great slowmotion with davinci resolve even with 30fps!!! Do you think that listening to a handycam is really a good choice to mimic a "cinematic" style? Of course with some limitations compared to a mirrorless in this sense I think especially the DOF and low light shooting but I think it is relatively easy to use and get good results quickly. I am Italian excuse my English :)
Thanks Michelangelo! Yeah it really depends on what you shoot. If you really need the low light capabilities and the shallow DOF then definitely upgrade your mirrorless. I personally love this camera though for the ease of use.
DSLR killer, who is using DSLR today when mirrorless are basically destroying them, they are smaller, faster, sharper, and better. But you still need a camera to take pictures for your thumbnails over your videos, so camcoders aren´t the best
Hahaha I don't think you actually watched the video bud. I own mirrorless, DSLRs, and camcorders and all of them have their purpose, and they are all great. But have fun going out and shooting multi hour interview sequences, live events, and sports with a recording time cap of 30 minutes on most DSLRs and Mirrorless cameras. I love all of them, but that's not this video was about.
It's funny because I went the other direction, having started with VHS, Video8, DV and HDV cameras in the 90s/00s. Now shooting with the GH4 and a couple C100s. That said I have a lot of experience with small camera sensors and would have killed for a camera like this back in 1999 or 2003 when we shot our first feature film on a Canon XL1 DV camera in 480/60i yikes!. We always had to back the camera up a long ways off so that we could push in with the zoom to get that shallow DOF shot. So there is no doubt you can do great work with a camera like this and obviously your shots show you have talent. Full frame especially is often overrated and razor thin depth of field is generally annoying and distracting to watch. But personally I tend to like the m43 and APS-C frame sizes for video/film. I think those are the sweet spot. Of course it all depends on what you're shooting. Anyway nice video, great shots and thanks for reading my old man rant. I'm not even that old, I'm in my early 40s.
Haha I love this take man! It's cool to see everyones personal ties to camcorders. I couldn't agree more about what you said regarding it all depends on what your shooting. Thanks for the input!
We've been using a new iphone as a wide angle on some interviews and it's somewhat similar but the camcorder definitely works better with lowlight. Also, the depth of field is way easier to control and manipulate than a smartphone.
Thanks for the video mate.. I've been thinking to sell my Sony a7iii and my expensive lenses for a camcorder, how about time lapses in this camcorder, is it possible to shoot? cheers
Hey Rafael! If you check out the video I just posted from Cooperstown, the first two shots are timelapses I shot on the CX10. I love the workflow of it but the one downside is that you can't to RAW timelapses, only 4k. Besides that though, I'm pretty happy with it.
So many of the features of the cx350 do carry over to the cx10 but the larger form factor of the cx350 does allow for some additional bells and whistles. I have used my cx10 consistently every week since I bought it and it is able to do everything I need it to do in the smaller body.
ok matt thankyou i have at the mo panasonic HCX1 with Sachtler FSB 8 video head with flowteck 75 tripod i want to up grade camcorder now that can handle faster panning and tilting on video head with stabilization turned off use ETC aircraft filming plus fingers crossed at airshows 2020 i dont no which be suitable for this cx10 or cx350 with ok roller shutter
Short answer: It works fine for racking focus. Long answer: I usually use this for auto focus based jobs. It is a servo lens so it won't be as responsive as a mechanical but you can make it work regardless.
@@mattcolvin8623 Thank you. I want to buy a camcorder for my own purposes as well as filming documentaries. I am wondering between this one and the UX180. Your short film made with this looks pretty good with the colour corrections.
Nope it does not have a V-Log setting. I usually shoot in one of the 2 Cine profiles and its a similar low contrast desaturated image. I have shot a lot of V-Log with the GH5 and don't see a huge color difference after color grading.
I am still very happy with the camera. I have shot numerous video packages with it as well as some more outdoor lifestyle videos and it really is a powerhouse of a camera. Ease of use is a lost art in the world of dslr's and cinema cameras, but the work flow with this camera is seemless.
When would you use 50hz compared to 59? Nothing in stupid manual telling you why, when, nothing . Computer can't read MOV files or HEVC. How do you fix that ? Software for this? Computer doesn't read anything recorded using 50hertz either. Nightmare.
I usually stick to 59hz but I think that has to do with regional electric output. I'm not really sure of this. If you download VLC player that should read the files. My computer has the same issue but usually I am running the footage through premiere pro. I have not had any problems recording in 59hz so maybe start with that.
@@mattcolvin8623 Thanks, yeah, could be just where you live. I recorded in 50hz, but camera couldn't play the vid. Computer doesn't read the files either. I use filmora, i hope i can edit mov on that. If you convert mov to mp4, do you lose quality? I"m guessing yes. How do you up load vids to your program? Right from the card? or after saving into a folder?
Mirrorless cameras are great at what they do, but they are very limited in what they can do. Thats why I think this camcorder beats mirrorless and DSLR. It is way more versatile.
Fair enough haha it's definitely not for everyone and every shooting style, but I have found it to be a great addition to my collection. I think I'm going to make a 1 year review video this week so if you want some more info definitely watch out for that. My views have changed a bit from this video, some for better and some for worse.
Hahaha well I can see you didn't watch the video. I stated a couple times that DSLR's definitely have the benefits of a larger sensor SUCH AS Shallow DOF and Better ISO. This camera I reviewed is a better ALL AROUND video camera though with more in body features and abilities than a DSLR. There is more to video production than just slow mo B-roll with some pop music in the background.
Thanks for the honest feedback Jason. That was partially the point of the video for me given the title "Done with DSLR's?" but I see where you are coming from.
@@mattcolvin8623 didnt mean to sound negative im a video camera guy and wanted to know more on the quality of your new camera more.Dlsr do have there place.
I am committed to a camcorder Trading 2 cameras to get a professional Camcorder. A Panasonic is the way I am going. Value and performance is what I want. Hybrid means it does more than one thing. I wanted a focused Video solution. I don't shoot pictures and if I do my Sony a6400 is here for the game, or my iPhone 12 Pro Max, but a camcorder will be an in one package, include my mics my external 7 inch monitor, and I am ready to get it done. For my Church services predominantly, as much as I love my a6400, no Balanced Audio, can overheat, so a Camcorder it is. Candidates, Sony, Canon, Panasonic. I wanted a Canon C100, but practical considerations were a fail for me. One package, one solution. Well mostly.

Good vid so far however, Sony makes smaller camcorders than this one with a larger sensor size. Sensor size is never the issue as their are full size sensor cameras the size of the avg. smart phone.
The purpose for using a smaller sensor in a camcorder is stability, heat management, depth of field, and longer focal lengths in a small package (no one is making 24-600mm 1.8, 2.8 full frame lenses, too expensive and big to create)
Use case is another factor.
Thank you..🙂
Would you recommend this camcorder for churches for live-streaming? Church doesn’t have black background but we can lower the brightness.
Absolutely. This is a really good camera for broadcasting and livestreaming. I wouldn't recommend getting the additional NDI access yet but if you are running HDMI or SDI it works perfectly.
Thank you!!!
@@mattcolvin8623 Sounds like there's a fair bit of noise reduction in the low light footage if night scenes are soft and day scenes are sharp.
People too often forget that the camcorder doesn’t finish at the eyepiece or monitor, in fact the most important parts of any camera is the nut between the ears, the story-teller, and the feeling heart just behind the camera body :) This is a short video about the FS5 M2 ruclips.net/video/ARok0NshNfA/видео.html
BTW, welcome to the dark side.
Definitely look into it if you film high school sports.
this camera is actually perfect for the movie look
@@mattcolvin8623 Lol of course I did not, bit you saying its DSLR killer made me laughed.
How does the sensor size compare to smartphone?
Larger (non wide angle) lenses allow for the "cinematic look."
hi matt do you think the Panasonic cx350 is better than the AG CX10
Have you done manual focus with the camera? Your experiences, if you did, would be very valuable. Thank you.
@@ayannandi1453 I can say that this is probably my favorite camera for run and gun documentary shoots. It really is a good all in one package.
Hi We Trek! You have cool channel. Great gear you have. Subbed to your channel! Thanks for the review.
Thanks! I'm glad you enjoy the videos.
Hey Matt, does this have a V-Log setting?
Nope it does not have a V-Log setting. I usually shoot in one of the 2 Cine profiles and its a similar low contrast desaturated image. I have shot a lot of V-Log with the GH5 and don't see a huge color difference after color grading.
Nobody mentions the poor light performance -.strange
Yeah low light is definitely not this cameras strong suite. One of the big downsides of small sensors.
What’s the difference with the x2000?
P2 recording and wired streaming via ethernet.
What is your evaluation now 5 months later?
I am still very happy with the camera. I have shot numerous video packages with it as well as some more outdoor lifestyle videos and it really is a powerhouse of a camera. Ease of use is a lost art in the world of dslr's and cinema cameras, but the work flow with this camera is seemless.
@@mattcolvin8623 Thank you so much for taking your time to answer! I will consider getting this camcorder.
Hey, not sure if you're still in the market but I'm going to post a 1 year thoughts review this weekend if you're still interested.
Nope I don’t see this as a dslr killer , it’s an ok video camera
Fair enough. It definitely has made me change my stance on the dslr v. Camcorder debate, and that is more so the point of the video.
so what camcorder is dslr killer?
Howmuch does it cost?
$2,595.00

When would you use 50hz compared to 59? Nothing in stupid manual
telling you why, when, nothing . Computer can't read MOV files or
HEVC.
It’s seems to be a very interesting Camera! Very good that we have so many options to choose from.
I couldn't agree more. It definitely has a lot of great advantages most DSLR's don't have.
But I love mirrorless camera
Mirrorless cameras are great at what they do, but they are very limited in what they can do. Thats why I think this camcorder beats mirrorless and DSLR. It is way more versatile.
@@mattcolvin8623 what about battery life and image stabilization(camcorder)
@@waimongtv4906 battery life is about 4 hours per charge of record time and ois is super smooth even at full zoom.
@@mattcolvin8623 ok I'll try next time but I'm using canon m50
Almost 10k... damn...
4K Film Quality :)
Sick camera pun bruh!
The down side is the small sensor. Cannot buy it.
Fair enough haha it's definitely not for everyone and every shooting style, but I have found it to be a great addition to my collection. I think I'm going to make a 1 year review video this week so if you want some more info definitely watch out for that. My views have changed a bit from this video, some for better and some for worse.
Wow. 5k. Wow.
I don't get it man. I just saw it now hahaha.
AAAAANNNNDDDDD 15k Damn
Lol we'll get to 1 mil eventually hahahaha
Wery noisy and no dof. What "killer"? Also a poor dynamic range, compared to dslr. Better compare it to phone! A phone killer!!!!
2k Champ Can We See 3k?
Alright buddy let's calm down there😂
And thats 3k... ddddaaaaaaaammmmmmnnnnnnnn
WHAT!?!? Is 4k pushing my luck? Haha
am i the only one disappointed by the quality?
What do you usually shoot on?
Yes. Dslr Killer......
All you did was compare it to your dslr camera. .Not a very good video to be honest.
I couldn't agree more. Camcorders are the all in one package especially for smaller crews or a one man army. Best of luck with your purchase.
