- Here's a quick video of what I did to replace the fuel tank check valve quick disconnect o-rings on my fuel injected 2012 Harley Dyna Wide glide. It should be similar on 2000 and newer fuel injected Harley's. I used the Fuel Tool rebuild kits. One kit for the hose and one for the check valve. I don't recommend using the lower oring that comes with the check valve kit. All of the other orings fit fine. Instead use a 10mm x 14mm x 2mm for the lower oring, if you have access to Viton orings those are preferred since they are fuel resistant. I also used dental picks for removal and a 9/32 socket as a tool to push in the parts. From what ive read the hose oring is .37" OD x .19" ID .09" thickness, which is roughly the same as a 3/8" OD x 3/16" ID. For the hose oring I just used what was in the kit. Fuel Tool sells a tool for rebuilding it but it is $100, the socket trick is much cheaper. I bought the 2 rebuild kits from J&PCycles website for about $30 total. The Fuel Tool part numbers are MC300 for the check valve and MC700 for the fuel line.
On an after thought, the resistance that I was feeling may be that the valve needs to be aligned to get it to pop in. If you run into the same problem you may just need to rotate the valve part until its aligned and its should all pop right in using the socket. I hope this video helps someone. Good luck!
Excellent video. No background music and no 20 minute introduction. I just did this job using the Fuel Tool repair kit and the o-rings fit perfectly. I know myself and I get frustrated easily so I invested the extra ten minutes and removed the tank. I placed it on a pillow made of a folded tarp (about 8 layers) so as not to scratch the paint. I bought a set of o-ring picks at Harbor Freight, on sale for $1.89!!. I got the small thick 0-ring out with the valve and spring easily. The thin wider one is very hard to see, at first I thought it was not even there, but probing (gently!!!) with the straight pick showed me that it was still in place. Got it out easily. Then put in the spring, valve and the thick ring. Used the head of a nail to push it into place, that was a great pointer!. Right when I was sure it would not seat, it did. And same with the thin ring. When the thin ring is seated it is very hard to see it, it sits deep in it's groove. Then a few minutes to pop the tank back on, snap the fuel line in place and it does not leak.

@@harleycharlie85it depends which oring you are doing. Thats the size for the lower oring thats inside the quick disconnect on the tank for 2000 and newer fuel injected bikes. The other sizes are written in my video description if you need those.

@@harleycharlie85if you bought the oring individually, it might be that someone put the wrong size in that bin, ive had that happen when I tried to buy the oring from Napa, they gave me the wrong one, but they said thats what was in their bin. I ended up going somewhere else and buying a whole set of orings so that im sure im getting the correct size. Compare it to your old one or measure it with a caliper. If you are positive its the correct size then maybe try and move the collar on the outside a bit and see if that changes anything. Maybe run a scribe along that channel and make sure that there is no debris in the way. Good luck!

95% of the time you dont have to take this assembly apart! Just disconnect fuel line from check valve and change out the O-ring thats right there inside check valve. Pop out with a small pick. Leaving the check valve in the unit. I just did it on my 2017 ultra limited and it worked great. No more dripping fuel

Do you know if this is the size for 01 road king with m&m efi? The lower o ring in the kit I have doesn’t seem to fit in the grooves at all after multiple attempts.

95% of the time you dont have to take this assembly apart! Just disconnect fuel line from check valve and change out the O-ring thats right there inside the housing, not on the check valve. This is the O-ring that gos bad and lets fuel drip out onto fuel line and down the bike! Pop out with a small pick. Leaving the check valve in the unit. I just did it on my 2017 ultra limited and it worked great. No more dripping fuel. Use safety glasses so you dont hit the button and spray fuel in your eyes!!! Also no need to disconnect battery pull fuel pump wire none of this. Its literally a 2-5 minute fix!!!
Thank you, this worked for me and my 2008 fatboy. Popped the old o-ring out, it was dry and brittle but still in one piece. Popped the new one in and no leak whatsoever.

Thank you for making this video. I have a 2017 Road King that's had a leaky fuel line for a long time. I went to AutoZone and bought the metric O-ring kit for $10 and replaced that lower one...now it doesn't leak! Harley really should sell these O-rings...I guess this is common.

So glad I saw your video. I usually watch several videos when I’m researching how to do something to catch as many tips as possible. Like others have mentioned, your video was the most informative. I took my gas tank off and replaced all 3 o-rings… upper and lower in the check valve and the one in the fuel line. All 3 of them were dry rotted. I used a cuticle pusher tool that has a rounded smooth surface on the end to maneuver them into the grooves and it worked perfectly like it was made for the job. Put it all back together and it still leaked. Ugh! Got an assorted o-ring kit from Advanced Auto that has (20) 10mm x 14mm x 2mm o-rings so I think I have enough to outlast the bike… lol. It fixed the leak so thank you so much for the video.😌👍

Good video. Couldn't have done this without it. I used the female check valve repair kit but not the fuel line repair kit. I just bought the whole fuel line assemble because I wanted to install a better looking stainless version.

Great video! On my 2013 Heritage Softail got the o-ring kits twice and had to replace the lower o-ring twice and it continued to leak. Did as you stated with the o-ring kit with the 10mm x 14mm x 2mm and it stopped leaking!!

So how do you stop the upper o-ring from sliding into the lower o-ring groove when you're reassembling the check valve, spring and top o-ring? I ended up ruining the new upper o-ring when trying to remove it from the bottom groove and move it up to the top groove🤔

Hey man just wanted to comment and say that out of all the videos and forums I watched today, this was the most useful and helpful. Went to Autozone and bought the same o rings package that I couldn't even find at O'Reillys which was great. Bought dental picks to remove and instead of a nail head I used allen keys to insert and place the o ring. Didn't remove the inner o ring and assembly cus I hope it just the common bigger o ring problem, but overall man this video saved me days of waiting and over $100 on the removal tool and o ring kits. Thanks man.

Great help for my leaker check..only thing I found that someone else had put the large upper in mine earlier, but they had pieces of the old one holding that crooked, used a good mirror and had to clear the Groove out, with a plastic Tv service screwdriver. Now the snap on socket I used was a 3/16. But the other end pushed the o-ring in place very well. If it weren't for you video, I would have had The expense of new line and opening the EMPTIED TANK 👍
Ordered same kit leaked after installation. Ran up to hardware store for correct o ring. Thanks man. You saved my ass on this one. No leaks!

Thank you for your RUclips channel. I was able to go to AutoZone get a O-ring kit and I was able to replaced it lower Creek disconnect O-ring in the tank without removing the tank is in dental pick and install it no more leaks lesson 20 minutes. Thanks.

Your video was by far the most helpful, detailed, and informative with the 9/32 socket recommendation. Could you post the exact size of the upper O Ring as well. Both of mine were completely deteriorated after only 1100 miles (bike was 14 years old when purchased). Thanks
Thanks for the compliment on the video. From what the forums are saying, I believe the upper oring should be: ID .299", thickness .103", OD .505".
@@Pavelow4433 I think your video is one of the best, both for saving a lot of money, and easy fix.. I use the rear of any 1/4 drive deep well socket mine are SNAP ON brand . Oil the rings and push by hand easily. Also the o-rings need to be Viton fuel resistant.

Wisj I would have found this before I bought the rebuild kit from HD Lakeville MN and that $90 tool! Even from HD wrong size lower oring. Bought the 10-14-2 mm orings to try next. Rebuilt and still leaked outside/around check valve-fuel line connection.

Keep some silicone tape on your bike. It'll stop a leak when you're in a pinch and get ya home.
200kms from home, stop to have a smoke, gas is slowly leaking from my quick release so I disconnected it while I had a few smokes. Tried limping my way home but got maybe 2kms. Gas pissin everywhere. Luckily some people were out for a walk and offered to help. Silicone tape on the male end stoped the leak.
Same thing happen to me after i ran wire for some rear speakers 😢. Great video. But i definitely found it easier to just take the whole tank off and turn it upside down. My 45 min in a pretzel turned in to 10-15 mins with the tank off 😂😂.

Went to meet some cats for breakfast. I pull in, my 2014 CVO breakout is pouring gas out the elbow. Local Harley dealer picked me up with a truck with a ramp. I thought it was the fuel line...nope...it was this oring

I just found my bike leaking all over the place this morning! Bike was acting up like wanting to die on me a few days ago, do you think this issue has something to do with it? I thought I had dirt inside the tank and maybe clogged injectors, tanks a lot for uploading this video !

Bought the lower o ring from my Harley dealer but having a terrible trouble putting it on I’m gonna try again tomorrow
It can be a pain in the ass to put in the thread, I used my phone camera to see better and used a sculpting tool with a round tip to avoid putting any nicks or damaging it, any tiny bit will make the fuel leak, mine didn’t wanna work right away, and today I pulled the quick connect hose tip and cleaned it with wd40 let it drain the lubricant and connected it, and started my bike dripped a bit and then it stopped. Been checking it periodically and it’s good so far. Personal tip: if you do it, do it at night in your garage, it’s easier to see with an LED light than during the day when the sunlight can be counterproductive in my opinion

Yes you can replace the plunger or use your original. I used the one in the kit and it worked fine. Good luck!
Looks easy until the oring is deteriorating and coming out in little tiny pieces. Huge pain to get all the tiny pieces out.
Thats what mine did. I had to pull out the o ring out of the male end with a pic, was a pain getting it out with gas leaking.
Can you unscrew that check valve from the tank to make it easier? If so is there anything connected to it inside the tank or does it just unscrew out?
No, there is a hose and fuel pump connected to it on the inside.

Yes I would empty the tank first, even if you are only doing the lower oring, you may accidental bump the plunger and dump gas in your face. I syphoned my tank empty into a gas can and then tried to start it to make sure it was empty and line depressurized. Good question!
Ah thanks man I walked into my garage today to the smell of gas and found a gas puddle under my Harley. I immediately pulled the line and leak stopped so much be the outer oring done dry rotted or something

Remove the orings and the internal valve should fall out, if not you can probably use a pick or needle nose to pull it out.
Word to the wise, Some people are not motorcycle technicians. If anyone does this make damn sure you use the proper nitrile oring. Dont go to Harbor Freight tools and buy 100 piece kit for 2.99.
Nitrile aren't meant for fuel?
@@johngallagher1126nitrile or Viton would be good, Viton is preferred. The kit from autozone doesn't say whats its made from so its possible it may be from neither. I only run non-ethanol gas but its been good for the past 2 years so far. If you have access to Viton I would go with that.

Mines leaking from the inside of the quick disconnect fuel pump itself. Should I completely remove the disconnect valve and check the seal there?

Is it possible to remove the quick connect from the tank to do the O ring replacement or better to leave it attached to the tank ? What is involved in removal ?
Leave it attached to the tank to change the orings. The fuel pump is connected to the check valve via a hose and clamps inside the tank.
@@Pavelow4433 Big thanks for the explanation. I was expecting the old style two tube -reserve & main fuel valve mechanism like standard cycle tanks had....not the pressurized corrugated pump-feed for fuel injected cycles. I looked at another video of a rider who opened the tank on a Yellow Deuce and the complicated pump/ filter/ gauge combo that is inside his ride. He had issues with the corrugated tube rubbing against the metal tank inside seam . The small hole it caused threw off the fuel/air mix which made the Deuce run erratically. I will proceed as you showed. I may use a very small crochet hook to remove the ring from the disconnect. I am surprised Harley has not had a recall on such a small but essential part of the fuel system. JwgK in Houston, TX

The oring for the hose is not in the autozone kit. I used the oring from the fuel tool kit, however from what ive found online it sounds like it is 3/8" OD x 3/16" ID. Another source said it was .37" OD and .09" thickness and .19" ID, which is almost the same dimensions as the previous one I mentioned which equals (.375" OD x .187" ID). I hope you get it fixed and thanks for the comment.
Can a leaking fuel check valve make it to where there is not enough fuel pressure to start the bike?
I highly doubt it, it would have to be a very large leak to lose enough fuel pump pressure to not be able to start. I would have to say that you probably have something else going on.
@@Pavelow4433 I’ve replaced everything I have spark, I have good compression and I’ve replaced the fuel pump, fuel pump housing, fuel pressure regulator as well as alll the lines the only thing that is giving me any kind of issue is check valve leaking and it’s a pretty good amount when I turn the fuel pump on
@@user-ln6hi2xb2gif you spray starter fluid in the intake does it try to fire? You may have a bad injector or injector is not getting the signal to spray. If it is really pissing fuel from that disconnect, I would try to change the orings first.
@@Pavelow4433 I’m going to rebuild it today to see if it helps I’ve cleaned injectors as well as flow tested them everything checked out as it should I’m going to see if a auto part store will rent me a fuel pressure testing tool there is no way I’m getting 60psi

@@msec2000 When I went to the parts store the first time the oring that they sold me had the wrong one put in the bin, if you are buying it individually that may have been what happened to you. I bought a small kit of them at the autoparts store to make sure I got the correct size and it fit perfect.

All you need is a Harley-Davidson oil drain o-ring that will solve your problem
How did you rebuild the hose side ?
I describe it in the video and show you the instructions, use a pick to remove it and bend it into a figure eight to install. Fast forward to the 5 minute mark.
I ask my question here maybe someone can help me. I wanted to remove the tank on my dyna super glide (2006). I had removed everything and wanted to lift the tank until I noticed that I have not yet disconnected the fuel line. Since I lifted it and therefore probably pulled the line by accident all the fuel started leaking even though I didn't even lift it That much. It only leaks out of the line when it is connected. When I disconnect the line nothing leaks out
I would change the orings, at the very least change the lower ones.

Another stupid invention from Harley, just like those plastic chain tentioners that weare out, why not just putting a fuel valve under the tank, like in the old days ?

You can make any modification there, dont need to buy kits and orings change these and again the same problem, use any connectors you want and thats it.I bought some staff from plumbers use petrol switch as old times.
