Be careful when buying a ticket for the Schnellbahn S7. I went to Vienna last week. I ticked the senior ticket as I am 66. I was told by a ticket inspector that I had the wrong ticket. I apparently should have had a Vorteilscard. Which I wouldn't have known about as it was my first visit to Vienna. I got fined 105 euros. The inspector wasn't interested that it was accidental. The only place I saw an inspector was on the journey to Vienna and at the end of my holiday back to the airport. I feel there is an element of catching the tourist here. On the way back to the airport there were 3 German speaking guys who had the wrong ticket. The inspector didn't fine them but told them to get off at the next station. Be warned. Lovely city though!
Thank you for this helpful addition to the video! Discounts can indeed be tricky to navigate. There is more information on the ÖBB website about the discounts they offer (Information in English): www.oebb.at/en/tickets-kundenkarten
This took so much stress out of me as I will be travelling alone abroad for the first time and I have to switch at least 3 stops! Thank you for the detailed information!
Thank you so much, that's how tourist guides shall be done, nicely explained step by step, I found it so helpful that feel no longer puzzled about how to take my transport to Vienna. Great job ;)
I love how detailed you explained all the options, you even included where to get to the ticket machines at the airport, and instructions on OBB. as well as visual maps with those options! It may seen like a small thing but definitely make me feel a bit more prepared for my trip, Danke Shoen!
I am arriving in a few days and have been looking up how to get to the city centre and saw there were several options and I was struggling to find which one was best for me! (And decently priced) The overview you added in your video was also very helpful. Appreciate you making this video. Thank you very much 😊
Great step by step video. Very well explained. Thank you for taking the time to do it and I hope that there aren't major changes for the last two years.
I love the way you say OBB. I will be coming for the first time to Vienna in May from Malta. So this video has helped me out tremendously. Thank you so much 👍
We are leaving Vienna today. One thing I feel is left out of most of these videos is the S7 line as an add-on to any ‘all access’ tickets you may have bought. I believe if you have any 24hr + pass you can get an add on for just 2 euros one way! But you have to get it from the OBB app or machine or counter. You can’t buy even the full 4.80 S7 ticket from the WienMobil app. And the airport transfer add on the city card is way more. I had to have some help to figure out the add on/discount in the OBB app, I wouldn’t take the chance of picking the wrong discount - the OBB app is more confusing to use than the WienMobil app for tourists. But if you want the cheapest way and have already bought some kind of transport pass within Vienna I was told with the machines it is easier to use because in the right hand corner as you are purchasing your ticket there is a choice for ‘city limit’ of some kind and that will give you the correct discount.
@@gretetheaustrianguide well - it’s probably more complicated than most people want to attempt 😁. We just ubered from the airport since there were 4 of us. It’s not too expensive compared to many other cities in Europe when it is divided between more than 2 people.
Thank you for the tip🙏 I am going to Vienna next month for 6 days and I am planning to buy the 7 days card and have already the ÖBB app. I hope it won’t be confusing and hard to use and pay for the tickets with Apple Pay
First vid I came across 💙. Really helpful and explanatory indeed. I visit the City May 18nth. Glad seeing you describing with a sweet smile. I cannot wait ! Big 💙 from Greece 🇬🇷
Thank you Grete, this is very informative video about how to get into town from Vienna airport. As one of the comment says, this is a great example of how the travel video should be. Keep up the great work and I hope you get lots of subscribers.
This is a bit complicated: The airport is outside of vienna. If you take the S7 you obviously have to pay for the full distance. If you already have a ticket or travel pass for Vienna you only have to pay for the small part of the route, that is outside of vienna. At the ticket vending machine you can select the option, that you already have a ticket for Vienna. This will reduce the price for the ticket to (or from) the airport.
Sorry, I did not understand. In the screen at 1:32 I do not see VAN 1, 2 or 3; nor a line going to Schwedenplatz but other destination not mentioned in the video. If I want to go to Schwedenplatz, which one is the correct?
It would be helpful to highlight the further price advantage of S7/ÖBB over the CAT in that the ticket allows further connections within the Vienna zone on metro, tram and bus. For CAT you would need an additional ticket.
So if I get the OBB train from the airport to the central railway station(for example) for 4.20 euro I can then take bus or metro with the same ticket?
@@М.М-х7ю Yes, if you stay within the city zone. The ticket has a time limit (I think 90 minutes). You can select your destination from the ÖBB ticket machine at the airport if you want to be absolutely sure about the price and validity.
@@М.М-х7ю Yes (albeit the price has increased to 4.40€ by now). A single ticket for two zones (Airport-Schwechat is the outer tariff zone, from Schwechat everything is the Vienna city zone) is valid for one trip in one direction, including changes (but not going backwards or in circles). You can even mix a single-trip (to get into the city) and eg. 24-hour ticket (within the city); there should be options on the ticket machines if I remember correctly. (Else: just get single ticket to "Schwechat" and an eg. 24h for the city zone.)
It should be added that if you have the Wiener Linien all-day ticket (which can be purchased online or at the airport at the ÖBB desk, and which is valid on all public transport services in Vienna), a ticket for the Schnellbahn is even cheaper, less than €2, up to the first station within Vienna, Wien Kaiserebersdorf - payment for the rest of the route is included in the Wiener Linien all-day ticket. If you have a day pass of Wiener Linien you travel to or from the airport you have to buy a separate ticket. However, if you go by ÖBB train or S7, you can select, that you already have ticket for Vienna and the train ticket will get cheaper.

"Wien Mitte" is the name of the station and literally means "The Middle of Vienna." You can find taxis there, as well as at most major train and subway stations in the city.
Yes and no.. the SBahn (S7) and the ÖBB trains are mostly included. You just need to buy an additional ticket, costs 2,10 € for the first two stops from the Airport to the station Schwechat, as this part of the route is not included in the Vienna tickets. thx for the video we are family with 7 9 years kids at sunday we need to go to handelskai to breitensee will we buy tickets for the kids i plan to buy 72 hours tickests but i am confused
Hi! Thank you so much for your informative videos - they help al lot in preparing my upcoming visit to Vienna :) do I understand correctly that even if I buy a 72h ticket for Vienna for 17,10 euro, I still need to buy a separate ticket for S7 line if I need to travel from an airport. I see on a Streckenplan that the last 2 stations of S7 before a Flughafen station itself (starting from Schwechat) are marked as Eigener tarif, so I need this ticket for 4,2 euro anyway, right?
Yes, if you have the 72-hour ticket for Vienna, you'll still need to pay for the distance between the city border and Vienna Airport. When purchasing the ticket to the airport, select the option indicating that you already have a ticket for Vienna, and the fare will be deducted from the total price.
Hi Greta, thanks for the information!!! I will be going to Vienna next Saturday 20/04. Once I arrive at the airport, I’ll go to Vienna centre and so I’ll buy from a ticket machine OBB two tickets, one additional ticket for the borders of Vienna and one for 48 hours. Do I need to validate the 48 hours ticket or not? If yes, can I validate it at the airport station? Please let me know, thanks!!
If you take the train to Meidling, you have to buy your ticket at one of the machines. Just select the destination you want, and it will calculate the correct amount for your ticket. So yes, it can be done with one ticket that includes the fare for the whole ride. Just make sure that the price for the ride within Vienna is included, but this should be the standard setting.

When purchasing the ticket to the airport, select the option indicating that you already have a ticket for Vienna, and the fare will be deducted from the total price.
hi greta, how do i get to the bus for flexbus on sudtiroller plazt 10 thankyou
Hi Greta, thanks for the information!!! I will be going to Vienna next Saturday 20/04. Once I arrive at the airport, I’ll go to Vienna centre and so I’ll buy from a ticket machine OBB two tickets, one additional ticket for the borders of Vienna and one for 48 hours. Do I need to validate the 48 hours ticket or not? If yes, can I validate it at the airport station? Please let me know, thanks!!
Hi, if I want to get off at Vienna Meidling , Do you have to buy the same ticket?
If you take the train to Meidling, you have to buy your ticket at one of the machines. Just select the destination you want, and it will calculate the correct amount for your ticket. So yes, it can be done with one ticket that includes the fare for the whole ride. Just make sure that the price for the ride within Vienna is included, but this should be the standard setting.
