When I was a kid kraut and weenies was one of my favorite meals. I loved it. It was later years before I began to look at mama's meals and realize that weenies were the only meat she had at the time and soup beans and cornbread only, might mean there was no meat at all. But there were always garden vegetables. And ways to stretch. We never went hungry. I still love kraut and weenies. God bless yall.

We always had beans, cornbread and fried potatoes! We had sour kraut and weenies often as well! I remember we would go to the store and Mom would sell could drink bottles back to the store for deposit money and she’d buy weenies or a pack of bologna to fry to go with what she had! It was always good regardless of what she had to fix we never complained we didn’t know any difference! ❤

@pamelaking9715 I was raised in Texas and Oklahoma and it was very hot in the summertime. Mother often didn't want to heat up the house cooking so we'd have sauerkraut and weenie's for supper. She usually made table pickles with cucumbers, onions, cherry tomatoes, vinegar, salt and pepper. So good

Something else that is really easy and good is bbq ribs and sauerkraut.
Got this recipe from my mother in law years ago.
It takes boneless country style pork ribs, a jar of sauerkraut and barbecue sauce(I use at least 1/2 a bottle of not more,I love BBQ sauce).
You take a pan(8×8 or 9×13 depending on how much you want to make), cover the bottom with the drained kraut, salt and pepper all sides of the ribs to taste(don't need mush salt as the kraut is salty), layer the ribs on the kraut and cover with BBQ sauce of your choice, homemade or bottled.
Cover with aluminum foil and bake at 375°F for one hour. Remove foil and bake for another 15 minutes until pork is cooked through and tender.
This is nice if you have to feed a crowd because you can do several pans at once.
We usually serve with mashed potatoes.
It is great reheated the next day too.

I'm about as far away, culturally, from Appalachia that you can get. I am a dyed in the wool Rhode Islander (think ocean, lobster, steamers, chowder, clam bakes, etc.) and I've become obsessed with making soup beans since watching your channel. I use pinto beans and smoked hog jowl from a local farm. It's truly become my go-to. It's easy and so, so tasty. As I've said before, thanks so much for sharing your cooking and stories of Appalachia with us!

Brothers and sister wanted me to ask for a restaurant pizza (Godfathers). I told Daddy if I didn't pick the pizza, everyone would be mad at me. What I really wanted was pinto beans, cornbread, fried taters and weenies with Sauerkraut. My absolute favorite meal! Together we decided pizza on the first day and my favorite on the second!! My Granny used to make cabbage rolls filled with hamburger, a bit of half cooked rice, bread crumbs, salt, pepper and garlic powder. She would fill big roasters with the rolls, tomatoe juice and a thick layer of sauerkraut that was rinced and squeezed. Then she would put a lid on them and slowly bake it all day. They were so juicy, soft and savory with just the perfect tang. So laborious to make tho, boiling the cabbage head, pulling off the leaves again and again. She never had to use toothpicks. My city doesn't sell big cabbage heads anymore so I make it like a soup over rice but it's not the same at all.

  • @alp-1960

Sauerkraut and hot dogs were a thing in my family too when I was growing up. I still make it sometimes, usually in the summer. I prepare it a bit differently. Take the kraut and spread it in a baking dish an inch or two thick, depending on how many people you're feeding. Line the hot dogs on top (whole), and bake in a 425° oven for 15 to 20 minutes or until the hot dogs get a nice dark skin, like they were grilled. My mom always served this with mashed potatoes and brown gravy, and that's the way I do it too. We eat the hot dogs in buns with the kraut and whatever other toppings we like, and it's so good! This is one of my favorite nostalgic comfort foods.
    Thank you for your videos.

I found myself sitting here with my mouth watering for that kraut and weenies! I also like kraut with kielbasa, which was my husband's favorite. I think his Polish heritage made him prefer the Kielbasa. With a surname like Florkevich he loved kielbasa as well pierogies. If you have never eaten pierogies before, you need to try them sometime. My husband introduced them to me and they are so good! They're little dumplings stuffed with mashed potatoes and fried in butter and onions. You can find them stuffed with meat and other veggies as well, but my favorite is the potato ones.🙂

As always, your supper looked like a feast fit for any king. My Mom-mom fermented her sauerkraut in a 5 gallon crock with shredded cabbage. When it had cured, she would have a supper or two of the fresh, then can the rest. You are lucky to have a source for old time hot dogs. The groceries around here mostly carry hot dogs with mechanically separated chicken, which I consider dog food and will not knowingly eat. Last Monday, I found and bought a brand from Buffalo made with pork and beef only, Sahlen's in business since 1869, in Walmart. I am anxious to try them. We have been blessed with several nice rains over the past two weeks and I pray for relief for you folks soon!

That meal looks so good Tipper. I used to eat weanies and kraut or smoked sausage & kraut. It was so good, but cabbage really tears up my belly now as I get older, but I miss it and really do love it. Cornbread and beans are also a beloved childhood favorite. I want so much to try my instapot, but ai’m afraid to, lol. I might try it outside in the deck, just to get over the fear of it blowing up. My neighbor lady had one explode and scald her very badly, so that scared me. I love seeing you & Corie get things done so quickly when you all use it. It’s so nice to hear that little Woody is showing out at the doctor. I’m so happy for everybody with the arrival of these precious baby boys. Stay cool. Not sure where you live but we can find them here in the Hispanic grocery stores I believe. They have such a great variety of dried beans! Good luck in finding some and God bless.

Recently make kielbasa and kraut. Added sliced onions. As a child I only like kraut with sliced boiled potatoes. Toned down the sharp flavor. Thunderstorms came through the area last night. No rain in the valley, but it cooled off some. Hope you got rain! Hello from Oregon.

That looks sooooo good. I usually fry my cornbread, then I fix me a big bowl of the beans, and put three pieces of the cornbread in the beans. I also have a couple of pieces on the side to dip in the bean soup. It’s a lot, I know, but I usually finish it, and sometimes even throw a few slices of pickled beets in there too!!! 😂🥲

Lordy I love kraut and weenies! My Mom made them all the time when I was a kid, these days I use kielbasa because I like the flavor, but I need to make some with hot dogs just because. 😊

I love weenies and kraut! Grew up with them and had them a few times a month. Mama always made mashed potatoes along with them which I still do. I'm 71 and grew up in Ironto,VA in Montgomery County, which is in the Blue Ridge Mountains. You cook just like me and my Mama!
