Saw The Who in 1967 on one of those silly package tours they used to do in the U.K. where each band would be do a “turn” for about 20 minutes each. The Who were top of the bill but ran over their allotted time and the management pulled the curtains on them. Townsend ripped the curtains open and proceeded to smash his guitar all over the orchestra pit. My brother and me looked at each other with our jaws on the floor. This was my first live gig and one of the best I’ve ever experienced. The impression they left on me as a 15 year old kid is buried deep in my psyche.
Bolin's Show there IS a version of this where it shows John, but it's from another song that same night. (John commented that the closeup was from" Substitute" .)

There is a real punk ethos to this performance, in particular. You can see why so many of the punk bands from the 70's and 80's drew from The Who for influence.
Still doesn't beat jimi, also Pete failed to get any feedback, while with jimi its almost like he could control it it's that good, even when he set his guitar on fire, with no movement from the guitar it changes tune
Saw The Who mid 70's. They went a Tour and 1/2 without breaking equipment. But the audience in Springfield, Ma. was so excited, they busted up equipment big time. I had binoculars 10X50, so I watched like I was 20' away. Pete was something else! 🤠
One of the hardest hitting live bands to ever play. Who cares if they started punk or metal. The who live is in a class of its own. Dirty, grimey, and down right chaotic. Idk what people think heavy music is but live Who is heavy. Their albums aren't always heavy but that's what makes their performances so special
This is such a prime example of raw emotion and raw energy that no other group had at that time. I remember watching this as a kid and being slightly terrified at the display of auto destruction. Then I got into my teens and it became eye candy. A visual outlet. Talk about clearing the area and making yourself understood and noticed. Any other group that took after them always looked staged and predictable. The Who were always unpredictable and always on the verge of combustion. The "in your face" energy alone was unreal. To this very day, they're my favorite group to watch.

This was The Who's American debut at the Monterey International Pop Festival in 1967, the first music festival of its kind, I believe, and the basic of the documentary movie Monterey Pop. Later in the music festival, Jimi Hendrix would set his guitar on fire while playing Wild Thing.

Time has not tamed the shock of that explosion of violence at the end and to do it in the hippie, peace and love, bubble of 1967 California was an act of pure defiance and scorn. Pete Townsend penned “My Generation” on his 20th birthday, May 19, 1965. A HUGE HIT that was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1999 for its “historical, artistic and significant” value❕ Roger Daltrey sang the lead vocals with a stutter, which was quite unusual. He recalled : “I have got a stutter. I control it much better now but not in those days. When we were in the studio doing ‘My Generation’, [our manager] came up to me and said ‘STUTTER!’ I said ‘What?’ He said ‘Stutter the words - it makes it sound like you’re pilled.’ And I said, ‘Oh… like I am!’” In 1967, Townsend called this song “The only really successful social comment I’ve ever made.” He explained : “‘My Generation’ was very much about trying to find a place in society. I was very, very lost […] then.” The lyrics contain the famous line “I hope I die before I get old.” Keith Moon sadly died of a drug overdose in 1978, at age 32. The remaining Who* members found themselves still playing the piece decades later, making those very words sound ironical❕ Today, Englishmen Peter Townsend and Roger Daltrey are regarded as living legends having co-founded one of the most influential rock bands of all time‼️ 💙🎶💜 May you rest in peace, Keith John Moon (1946 - 1978 🌹, John Alec Entwistle (1944 - 2002) 🌹, Douglas Sandom (1930 - 2019) 🌹… * The actual name of the group is “Who”, and not “The Who”.
