  • Having recently moved from a tiny NYC apartment to my new house in New Jersey, as part of the renovations I built a music room. However, it doesn’t hold my complete collection that now has over 11,000 CDs, more than 200 boxsets, plus records, cassettes and more. Finding a place to store it all yet keep it accessible has been a journey in and of itself. Join me for a tour of how I display and store my complete music collection.

    I have over 16,000 CDs including several hundred box sets of various sizes all in one room and all on display with easy access to every title. Everything is in alphabetical order. I also organize each artist in order of original release date oldest to newest within the alphabetical order. Every spine is viewable. I custom built standard CD jewel case size shelving along each wall from floor to 10’ ceiling with the reachable top shelves deeper that are deep enough to hold any oversize box set. The box sets follow alphabetically by artist the standard jewel case CDs below them - all the way around the room. I added controllable lighting in eight sets around the room so that every title is lit and easily readable. The room is large enough to include on one end a top end audio system with 18 different playback and recording formats that are controlled in a central mix system. My 8,000 vinyl albums and 45’s are housed in this floor to ceiling system cabinet. At the other end of the room a current vintage large widescreen offers glorious video with awesome surround sound. My many music videos flank the big screen TV. The head in the system sends audio to all rooms of my three story home as well as to all sides of exterior of my home so that I can hear audio anywhere in my yard and garden. I have a custom German handmade 9.2 surround system in this studio room as well as stereo or surround in all of the rooms of my home. Been collecting since I was five starting in 1964 with “Introducing The Beatles”. May sound like a brag. Not my intention. I am a music nut like the rest of you and I assembled this piece by piece over these many years and I chose a profession in the pro audio industry that gave me the contacts and the means for assembling what I have today. I haven’t many years left but I will enjoy what is to come. Thank you for reading this.

    I’m always interested in seeing how other people store their music collection. When my collection was at its largest, (in the 9,000 + range) I stored in the Ultra Boxx from Bags Unlimited. all alphabetical. The Ultra boxes are quite strong and hold 100 CD’s. I could stack up to 6’ high without a problem. And having a large indoor room to store them worked for me. Thanks for sharing a peak at all your musical treasures Brendon!

    • @ianswift3521

      I use plastic milk-style crates with the cris-cross open holes, I put cardboard inserts on all 4 sides and the bottom to prevent any potential problems and corners getting caught in the holes.
      For awhile I used only the plastic crates sold from The Container Store that were large enough to fit records. Those were discontinued about 8 years ago, they were called Superior Milk Crates or something like this. Now that store sells some weak transparent plastic boxes with wobbly handles, but they look even weaker and those are extremely expensive at $38 a piece. A very bad deal, if you have over a thousand records it would cost $800+.
      I now buy the Farmplast Super Crates from New Jersey. They're at least 3-4x sturdier than The Container Store's discontinued "superior milk crates" were. I have 16 of them fullly loaded and still have 6 Container Store crates. They're basically the same size and can fit the same amount of records, something like 60-70 regular sized jackets. I can't stack the different crates with each other. The discontinued ones are incredibly flimsy in comparison, I've even read some users online claim that their "superior milk crates" broke when they were loaded full-up with records and that sounds like a horror story. I suppose I'm fortunate that never happened to me when I've moved them at least 5 times in moving trucks between apartments, houses and storage units all over the east coast. That said I still haven't bothered to replace the old ones yet because they're functional and aren't falling apart on me.
      If anyone knows a good plastic box that I can use for 10"s and 7"s, or even cassette tapes I'd be happy to know. I've seen some dopey cardboard ones but I don't want that. I'd prefer a nice sturdy plastic box that's perfectly sized and is nothing too expensive.

    I found your channel and was immediately inspired to buy some of those bankers boxes and start organizing my haphazard collection with piles of CD's and DVD's scattered all throughout my room. Right off the bat in less than an hour or so, I could actually start walking in the room and instantly find a CD or DVD that I had filed away in the boxes. Great solution and very possibly, the ONLY solution if one wants to curate a large collection with limited space.

    Always nice to see how others store their stuff. I had over 20,000 but have finally started getting rid of stuff. I use Tangkula bookshelves from Amazon and modify them. They are 80 inches tall, 60 inches wide and 13.5 inches deep. They come with 6 shelves but the way the brackets are you can cut some lumber and run them through and secure them to make the whole unit sturdy without having to use the supports and you end up with 11 shelves counting the top of the unit and then can put CD’s on both sides. Never counted how many it holds but it was the best solution I found and the bottom shelf sits about 8 inches up for any flooding.

    Great collection. I own over 3000 and I am finding a bit difficult to manage it now and I moved in a new place less than 6 months ago. I have not arranged anything yet but I have got some ideas from you. I keep them in the staples boxes but I never cut them, so I am going to do it temporarily. I think keeping the out the basement is the best thing to do because in my case the watertank is there and even when this is not a flooding zone accidents can happen. Sunlight is an issue too and I try to keep them off the sun. I am concerned about the weight on the second floor but distributing them along the wall is a good idea instead of piling them up in a closet. Thanks for sharing your ideas and collection.

      i've had many CDs from the early 90s become ruined by disc rot as well as CDrs from the early 2000s despite keeping them in air conditioned homes or storage units the whole time. I've lived on the east coast below the 77th parallel for my entire life, that's south of DC for the philistines.

    thanks for the update! Very nice!! I like sitting in the floor as well! I totally agree with you about the basement. I have a bedroom upstairs that I turned into a movie room. I have over 4,000 movies plus posters and collectibles. When my daughter moved out of the basement, my wife wanted me to move everything to the basement. I told her no for 2 big reasons. One, the chance of flooding, and two, the humidity is higher down there and thus it could ruin the covers of the movies. Long story short, we had lived in the house for over 10 years and no flooding. Can you guess what happened? Yeap, it flooded down there shortly after my daughter moved out. So, my choice to not move my stuff down there paid off!

    Respect! You've invested lots of Time and Money for this huge Collection. I have about 2000 CDs, 100 Vinyls and a few Tapes and not enough Space to store it. I have a big Ikea Rack called "Kallax" which is quite practical and has lots of open Shelves. To reduce a little Space i put all Cds in small Sleeves and keep them in alphabetical Order in little Cover Boxes (also from Ikea in different Colours). The main Problem is that i can't stop buying new/old Stuff so that my storage Problems may not stop til I get more living Space in the Future. I also like to separate all Kinds of Genres (Metal, Alternative, Black, Rock/Pop, Dance/Electronic, World,Soundtracks). Keep on rockin on

    All my music is very similarly done to your setup. I have CDs in my bedroom and those are the albums from artists I love the most and albums I listen to a lot, where as I have many CDs in plastic boxes in a tower of drawers, and some albums left at my Dads also, which are mine, and I am trying my best to keep hold of them, and I have my Vinyl stored in a dark place in my cupboard under the stairs, where my other CDs are in there too, so no sunlight will get at them, and I am happy with my collection, but once my Drawers are full of CDs, I am going to stop buying them and be happy with what I have, and I also download most albums from certain artists also, to save quite a bit of room as well, but your setup videos also inspire me for when I get my own place, in the future, I am thinking of putting my CDs on shelves in different places, and keep my Vinyl as they are, and that's what my setup will be in the future.

    WOW! Thank you for sharing your impressive music collection with us, Brendon! And I thought I had a huge collection, numbering around 2200 CD's! I have my discs arranged in alphabetical order, separated by genres, which are: Rock, Jazz, Classical, Electronic/New Age, International, and Greek. My other obsession is stereo systems, especially vintage. I have 11 stereo systems set up in my house, including the garage! Now, let's not even get into my Amateur Radio (Ham Radio) collection of modern and vintage radio and shortwave gear! A man's got to have his hobbies and past-times!

    • @BrendonSnyder
      @BrendonSnyder  2 года назад +2

      It’s my pleasure! I’m glad to hear you enjoyed seeing it. Wow you’ve got more genre separations than me! Most people just got straight alphabetical but like you I prefer having genres. If I’m in the mood for a style of music I want to search other related artists easily and get inspired to listen to more just like it. If it’s all alphabetical and not separated by genre that can’t happen. Right now I’ve got stereo systems set up in 5 rooms but my goal is to have one in every room too. Rock on man!

    • @AudiophileTubes
      @AudiophileTubes 2 года назад +1

      @@BrendonSnyder Thanks Brendon. You make a great point regarding 'separating by genre'. I never thought of that, but yes, it is super convenient to be able to listen to other artists from the same genre, and to have them all arranged together. BTW, i'm from Jersey originally, but now stuck in Ohio, LOL. Actually, not a bad state at all. Rock on (rockin' with Dokken... love them!)!

      All of you out there are not hoarding lovers of physical media and sound equipment, you are mere wandering obsessive-compulsive hoarders. You will need a private "crypt or mausoleum" to house all this paraphernalia if you really intend to take all this stuff to the grave with you... hahaha

      @@armandoaraujo6128 Your post is assinine! We are not "obsessive-compulsive" at all, and we are not "hoarders" in the dysfunctional sense. Perhaps the word you are looking for is "passionate". If you truly enjoy, and derive pleasure from something to the point where you want to engage in that hobby or past-time, you are passionate about it. Especially if you take the time out to do other normal things, like spend time with your family, friends, pets, etc. Lets also not forget that your generation has largely traded being able to physically hold and own an LP or CD, or listen to a full range quality stereo system for portability and reduced sound quality (cheap headphones, ear buds, computer speakers, small bluetooth speakers, etc.). Also being able to experience that physicality, and have your gear and collection ON DISPLAY is very pleasing and satisfying!

    Can you find, say within a minute or so, any one particular CD you suddenly thought of playing it on your music equipment? My collection is just over 3000 CDs and I catalogue them in an Excel spreadsheet which is on my desktop PC as well as my handphone. Most of the time I can find any one individual CD under a minute. Your collection is most impressive. Hope they are all insured.
