Networking is essential in the media industry. I’ve seen people with almost no experience get hired on as talent because of connections they made at career fairs and other events.

Your network can surprise you with opportunities and connections you did not know existed. I find it is important to talk about your career change with people because your network may offer connections that you thought were too obscure but proved fruitful.
    Great tips in the video!

I subscribed to Work It Daily weeks ago, and I have already recommended the subscription to my family and friends. This video was perfect for me because it validated that if I ever wanted a career change, this is how to go about it. I already was thinking this route, but the video made it much clearer added the extra touch of networking. Networking is so important. It opens the opportunities and doors for you that may have otherwise been closed. This has also inspired my next blog post! Work It Daily is awesome!

This is a very good listen ... my experience resonates well with JT's comments about using your network to advocate and vouch for you when looking to re-align your career into a new discipline or set of skills. I particularly like the thought about asking the experts in your network for advice related to your career change ... am i a good fit, is this a good idea, is this new field a good place to be given my previous background. Finally, I have used a well-connected member of my network to connect me with 3 leaders in 3 major companies and am just following up on those leads now. I'm a believer that well-connected members of my Network will be the key to my career change/re-alignment. Thanks JT!

As I evaluate what direction I need to go in with my career, Tip #2 stood out for me because I’m coming from working in the Federal world back to the Private sector. On top of that I have 26 years of being a military wife and putting my career on hold, I feel like a fish out of water so it’s imperative that I find ways to acquire the industry related skills that I need to make that career move. So I am finding real value in the Networking opportunities that I have through LinkedIn. Whether I’m the lucky winner or not, I’m excited to do more networking because that’s the key to making my chances of landing that dream job a reality!

I've come to embrace the positive impact of networking. For an introvert like me, it was quite a challenge, but it truly works! How do I make myself stand out without appearing desperate or hassling? Thank you for the video!

This video is a useful way to think even if you are changing within your industry. Most people think of a career change as something major, say going from being an architect to being a nurse. But this can also apply for changing within a field. For example, say you are a software engineer that writes user apps like a word processor. If you want to change to writing websites, that's considered a career change requiring a lot of the same thought and work.

The networking method you recommend is to first, reach out to one's network and to have meaningful conversations with connections to get a full grasp for what it will take to earn a new position. These conversations are particularly beneficial in that they will allow you to showcase your personality and aptitude, as well as your experience. They will also allow you to meet key players who can advocate on your behalf as well as provide you with the right advice.

Networking is essential to achieving the career you want. I’ve learned that “who you know” could greatly benefit you than “what you claim to know.” Someone that works for the company you want to enter into putting in a good word for you separates you from the other applicants.

Having just changed from 15 years in the LEGAL field to the FOOD MANUFACTURING business (couldnt be more unrelated!) it was through networking and word of mouth. It is for my brother in laws company. And even he put me through a temporary trial period to see if I even like it and to see if the skills i had before transfer at all (management/customer service skills etc.). I was just hired on full time and am learning the ins and outs of a food processing plant. I quite enjoy it!! ....gotta be honest, its pretty hard to "cold-convince" hiring managers via resumes and hiring sites in that same way. frankly, it seemed impossible.

You will need advocates to help endorsing you out. Your network can give you a seal of approval or even getting your resume into the hands of ta hiring manager.

However, it's another thing to have it properly explained in a succinct and optimal way on a resume and on a LinkedIn profile -- making sure the correct key words and terminology are listed for the job or jobs you are seeking. I find Networking is important on many levels, however you need to know how to network. That on its own is not an easy task, as people may say it is. I have been on all sorts of levels and find that one on one meeting someone in the raw is my favorite approach. Its real, you can shake hands, talk about a current issue, relate to that person or persons with common interest and really just make a great connection and memorable network experience that will make future relations that much more comfortable.

Thanks JT!
