Don't get STUMPED by tricky interview questions! Instead, learn how to answer them effectively. In this video, career expert J.T. O'Donnell reveals her SECRET to answering behavior interview questions so you can crush your job interviews every time.
A behavioral interview questions is an open-ended questions, meaning it doesn't result in a one-word answer like “yes” or “no.”
Instead, it requires the interviewee to elaborate and give a more personalized answer. Hiring managers use behavioral interview questions to help determine if candidates have the skills or experience to do the job.
The best way to answer these types of questions is to structure your answers using the Experience, Learn, and Grow model.
Experience + Learn = Grow.
- Explain your experience. Share a situation you dealt with in the past. What was the problem or challenge that had to be overcome?
- Talk about how you overcame it and how you accomplished it.
- Explain how you’re going to take this lesson and use it to keep growing as professional so you can add even more value in similar situations in the future.
Here are some common behavioral interview questions you could get asked in your next interview:
- What's your greatest accomplishment on the job?
- Tell me about a difficult situation you encountered and how you overcame it.
- If I was to ask a co-worker about you, how would they describe you on-the-job?
- If someone came to you with an enthusiastic, yet unrealistic request, how would you handle it?
Take these three questions and start practicing structuring your answers using the Experience, Learn, and Grow method.

Thank you so very much for your videos. I prepared for my interview using your tips particularly on follow-up questions and behavioral questions and they were so impressed with my answers they hired me on the spot. I admittedly struggle in interviews and I believe your advice really helped me polish my presentation. I was able to land the dream job I have been waiting for for over 4 years. So thank you thank you thank you!!!! I cannot say enough good things about your resources!
WOW Congratulations Lars!! That's fantastic! We're so glad that our advice and videos helped you to land your dream job. :D
That's awesome to hear! Great job!
Congratulations
What job??
Perry perry'harper
I used your tutorials took help prepare for my interveiw. Thank you I landed my dream job.
I'd been trying to land a job for several months. I literally found your channel days before my interview and figured I'd give your techniques a try. BOOM! They offered me the position senior to the one I applied. I never write comments, but I had to say thank you. God Bless!
wow, that's an amazing story! Congrats!
I've noticed that more employers are asking Behavioral questions and I've had difficulty putting my thoughts in order. Thanks for sharing the Experience + Learn=Grow methodology.
Good advice. I watched it twice. Experience, Learn, and Grow is a great model. I've been doing the experience and learn part, but need to incorporate the grow.
This "Experience + Learn = Grow" seems like a good addition to the Star (Situation, Tasks, Actions, Results) answer method.
Not only adding the professionals related to the area you want to move, but also interact with them. As you said, build relationships isvery important!
The WID model for answering behavioral interview questions is experience + learn = grow. I've seen this video multiple times and it's incredibly helpful!
So I had a five person panel interview via phone and stumbled across this video a few hours before I had my call. This was really helpful with learning the tip to talk about situations and how growth occurred etc. My whole panel interview basically consisted of behavioral questions (for a leadership position) and the biggest help I found too was to jot down circumstances I have had in the past which allowed me to jog my memory and use the examples during the call. As the question was being asked, I would scan my 4 pages on notes I had spread out in front of me and hone in on the most appropriate one relevant to the question. It really put me at ease more and allowed me to expand on the example and talk about growth from it. I also made sure to thank everyone by name at the end and then send my follow-up thank you email. Overall it went really well so hopefully I will get an offer! If anything, just be sure to prepare for the interview ahead of time and make notes bc it is SO much easier to draw on relevant situations to answer the questions!
I really like this video series. It's very direct, practical and not long winded. I have my phone interview next week and this has been a great prepping tool.
Thanks for the great feedback! Good luck next week on your phone interview. Here is our interview prep playlist. It can help you get ever more prepared :) ruclips.net/video/Y95eI-ek_E8/видео.html
So far I have looked at 6 of your videos and have found them all very informative, insightful and most of all encouraging on how to move forward in my job search. I wish I had found you sooner. You actually make interviewing and job search feel fun and exciting something that it has never been for me in the past. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! I plan on watching all of your videos and recommending you to everyone I know or meet who is in the current job market.
Experience, learn and grow. So much more intuitive than 'STAR". Many thanks J.T., that's actually really helpful!
Thank you, JT! This video was very informative and will be useful for me in my next interview. I see now that I have been answering these behavorial questions wrong. Going forward, I will apply the new approach!
Experience + Learn = Grow. Amazing. This place is a place to be daily.
Thank you for the useful tips in your videos! I have recently been through three frustrating interviews with negative results due to these types of questions, now knowing clearly how I failed them. I haven't interviewed for a job in many years and I can understand better how things have changed with time and the new perspectives in the hiring department. It's sad though that a company would rely on behavioral answers rather than people being properly trained and having many years experience versus someone who has little to no training but can "fit the behavioral bill". In my field of work (20 + years experience transporting heavy equipment and cranes exceeding 200,000 lbs) that can get someone killed.
Thank you again.
Wallace Rollins I feel your frustration! I’m in the process of applying for a new job after being with a company for almost 8 years. I was totally in the dark about doing a video interview, which I have to prepare for in a couple of days 😯 I had to do some research to see what the video interview details. Last time I did an interview it was face to face. I pray I have this...lol
Thanks so much for this video, I feel much more repaired for an interview, I just need to practice/apply. Your tone is really calming and encouraging. Thank you
Your videos are so "spot-on" and so very helpful. Your formula: experience, learn, and grow, is terrific. Following that process takes some of the fear out of doing well in an interview because it works regardless of the question. A fear of mine is the question that I have not prepared for but with the formula I should be able to provide a reasonably good answer.
I am extremely grateful to have stumbled upon your content. Your videos are excellent, informative and make a huge difference. Thank you!
Thanks so much. I used your tips from this video and others....went for an interview on Thursday, and got the offer letter Friday.
8. Tell me about a difficult situation and how you overcame it?
The situation that comes to mind would have to be at **** dealing with customers at least a few times a day we get people that are displeased with the service or have an ongoing issue that still has not been solved. The main thing I have learned from these situation is that when someone is unhappy the best thing to do is listen to them and acknowledge there problem. After listening and dealing with these situations over and over I learned that to make clients happy and solve their problem the obvious thing to do is find a solution, however, what I have found is that giving them options to pick from really helps because clients feel that they are in control of the outcome. This has really helped me overcome difficult clients and reduced the # of calls that are escalated.
WHAT YA THINK???
Danial Ayub .....ooohhh thats a really good one. And being that actually does apply in the type of jobs I've had in past up to the current, I think im going to use this one. I like a lot. Thanks
Danial Ayub Bravo!! Very well done
Agreed!
I subscribed, thank you. I'm interviewing for a pretty awesome position (2nd group interview) this Thursday, I've watched a few videos to brush up as I haven't interviewed in 3 years. I'm taking notes like crazy so I can remember these key tips. You're a GODSEND.
My biggest mistake in preparing for interviews is that my STAR stories can take too long with so many details. I am learning from JT's example, how to shorten the story to get to the pertinent facts and focus on what steps I took to get that accomplishment and state what I learned from the experience to bring forward.
I agree. I like this version of EGL instead of STAR, because when you finally get down to results, you’re talking about the benefit for the other party versus how you learned and grew from the experience.
How To Answer Any Behavioral Interview Question = "Experience; Learn and Grow" = Great Stuff!! Work it Daily and coffee = the best breakfast or break time boost I have experienced!! Thanks so much !!
I was taught to use the STAR format (situation, action, result) for resumes and for answering interview questions. They both seem to be similar in concepts.
Great advice!! I already have written it ang hung it under my screen! I'll practice! Thanks J.T.
I 'm so glad I found you, all of your videos are so helpful thank you so much.
Wow! The Experience, Learn, and Grow model puts the process in easy to implement steps and makes a difficult issue super simple! I love it.
Thank you so much, for this very helpful video!!
Thank you for these videos. You provide great tools for job search and interview prep!
The video makes so much sense! I've been asked similar questions and stumbled through the answer. Now I will practice and learn to lead the interviewer into what may become productive for me. Thank you. I look forward to learning more and have subscribed to the channel.
Great knowledge and insight being offered on this channel! Your videos are definitely helping to prepare me and showing me what I need to be aware of during this process. What seems like such a daunting experience actually isn't meant to be!
Hi J.T. I want to thank you for clearing that up. I bet you ten to one odds that I have not been answering these correctly because I often let the answers come without really planning it out. LG
Honestly hating this contrived interview style that employers ask.. the question should go something like this.. “explain to me how well youve researched behavioural interview questions on the internet, guessed which ones we might ask and then how you came up with a few answers for each.. and then how you rehearsed them until they flowed well and seemed natural, even if they were completely made up. Tell us about that..”
I find J.T.'s experience hard to believe. I mean, she got yelled at then she calmly explained to the customer then the customer gave her a 4 star rating??!?! In the real world, maybe in mine, that customer wouldnt event bother yelping with a 4 star.
Totally get it hate these questions
The idea is, you're suppose to give them an honest answer and not making them out. It just gives you the time to think through and figure out which experience you'd like to share 🤷🏽♀️
Instead of looking at it and thinking "hmm, I have to give a contrived answer", look at is as "what have I already done that could fit this style of answer?". Employers tend to follow a herd mentality and you can go to several interviews where the same questions come up again and again - which makes it easier to prepare. Remember, in the example question about "your greatest achievement", the answer wasn't "I cured cancer" or "I created artificial intelligence" - it was something quite basic but fundamental (i.e. I put myself in the customer's position and helped them sort out their problem and turned a negative situation into a positive one - this taught me that it's better to empathise with customers and not take their comments personally). It's showing that you are capable of adapting to situations and learning from your experiences - which often scores higher with prospective employers than a flashy "look at me, aren't I great?" answer.
I agree. Asking behavioral questions is so fake. It's just acting and following a script. It's a poor way to find a good candidate for a job, at least in my line of work.
9. What would your co-workers say about you if we asked them?
My university and work experience has allowed me to work with a variety of different people over time. I think if you talk to my current or previous colleagues they would say that I am dependable, hardworking, dedicated, and positive. These are things I have learned over time and not qualities I always had. Also the list of these qualities is always growing and evolving as I become a better version of myself.
Danial Ayub hhhhjj8ugffbkkkkkkk hi guys hi guys
There you go again! Love it
They’d probably tell you it’s illegal to ask them questions about me other than dates of employment. They’re pretty professional that way.
Perfect :) tell to the interviewer your strength which is leading to a need for a company to hire you
Loved it. Thank you.
Thank you J.T. for the great advice!
Your content has been so helpful to me when preparing for my interview. Especially during these times I want to be extremely prepared. My interview is tomorrow! 🤗
You are awesome!! Simple and Sleek just what I really really needed to know.. Wonderful!!! TNX again.!!!
"Experience + Learn = Grow"This going to be soo useful ;)
Thank you for reminding me of the behavioral questions because these are standard questions.

Experience ,Learn and grow. That was a game changer
Thank you J.T for your professional advice to better myself.
Thank you so much for your videos. I actually had an Interview today where 3 of those questions were asked. I couldn’t shake my nerves and got in my own way rambling a little but I can’t say i wasn’t prepared with the help of your vids.
I have an interview in 15 mins..😥😥😥
Thank you. Great breakdown for success.
JT, I don’t get much of a chance to watch the WID videos, but I caught a portion of this one. Loved it and especially the E+L+G tactic. Nice one. You sounded great and looked great! Lots of luck with the channel!
Thank you Andrew for the kind words. :)
she stresesd her neck too much
I will be having a job interview today and I’ve been polishing up on the company’s history and stats. I’ve also been watching tons of videos on interviewing and what to wear etc. Thank you for sharing your wisdom and keep up the good work!!
Good luck on your interview Rhino!
Work It Daily I nailed the interview by the grace of God! They called me and set up a second interview on 12/10/18. Going to be going through your videos for help on that. Thanks and God bless!
This is gold! You are giving away free gold! I had no clue how many moving parts there are to an interview. Thanks!
Thank you for making these videos it has helped me a lot!!!
This really helped me break down how to answer these questions!!
Thanks for the advice,loved it!
Great video! Thanks for helping me pass my interview.. I feel like it saved my but at my last interview!!

Experience, learn and grow makes the WID model.

Amazing videos!! Thanks and pls keep making them frequently👍🏽
Powerful stuff! Thank you!
you are amazing thanks to your i got the job keep up the good work
This tutorial was a great one. Now I have a question for you. How do I answer interview questions that ask about my weaknesses?
I wished I had found this Chanel yesterday . I was interviewed today and it went pretty bad :((( . But I learn from my mistake and keep on trying ….
Thank you for these resources 😊
Great tips! The information you provide is so relevant.
Hi JT very good tips. I will be sure to use this guide in answering behavioral questions.
One of best video ...
That's is the simplest way for the STAR. This "Experience+Learn =Grow" highlight more your ability to grow. Some people would misunderstand Results (from STAR) with grow (what they have learned). In my opinion, that's what hiring manager wants to hear.
Would be something like CAG (Context; Action and Grow).
Thank you
Experience +learn = grow makes the WID model. Thank you.
This was very helpful. Thanks!
Thanks JT!! Great informative vid for us in the job search! :-)
Experience + Learn = Grow is the WID Model
Amazing in back - Life is either a daring adventure or nothing
This question always perplexed me until I found it as a way to understand myself and identify an area that I needed to improve. My answer now is that I tend to over-commit and then my current projects suffer. My solution is that I maintain my calendar better and don't answer a request until I've checked my calendar and the status of my current commitments. What do you think?
The WID model for answering behavioral questions is Experience & learning helps grow
Experience + Learn = Grow Model, thank you!
Another awesome video... thank you!!!
thank you so much, you are awesome. loved the experience, learn and grow model.
Excellent, I only wish I had it for my last two interviews, phone interviews, something I never do very well. Anyway, thank-you for the advice!
Wow thanks J.T for this, I never knew even dealing with a difficult situation would be considered an accomplishment. :)
Your videos are amazing. Thank you so much
Great advice experience learn and grow
Good advice for learn new thing during your working.
It is good to know to personalize the "why do you want to work here" letting them know a bit about you and to let them know that you know about the company and they you belong there
Thank you for sharing.
I recommend to also review the STAR (Situation, Technique, Action, Results) technique. This is pretty much similar to the model that she is talking about. She is absolutely right, recruiters actually want you to answer questions following this model. Usually if you deviate from that, there is little chance they will call you back.
Thank you. Heading out to an interview right now.
must be honest in learning and doing your job to have a good experience to remind it and answer
I just want to say that you have been very inspirational to me with your practical approach to C.V's and interview techniques.
I went for an interview today that I really wanted and I got the job thanks to you. Deeply grateful JT for these words of wisom.
That's fantastic Rico. Congratulations! We love hearing how our advice helped our viewers achieve their career goals :) Keep us posted!
I have issues remembering those situations when I'm in an interview. What if you didn't experience anything difficult or too challenging and don't really have an answer to their questions?
Jasmine Vardy I'm about to have my second interview ever and so young but actually good question but I would explain what would I do if I were to have that
Joe Anderson if you're talking to me then you're wrong I got the job lol
Love this!!!
Thank you so much for providing an answer, it helped so much. Just got an interview 3 days ago was asked that question. I didn't know what to say. If would be so helpful if you would have provided answers to all the questions not just the first one.
Great advice about how to answer open ended questions in an interview!
The experience plus learn equals growth is great and it seems this question pops up on more interviews. More examples are needed though. one of the more difficult situations i have experienced has been applying for warehousing positions with dekalb and fulton counties in georgia. There are at least 12 behavior scenarios from work conflicts to crowning achievements. Worst still, that blank, lifeless expression on their faces. more examples are needed as in a battery of them for a variety of jobs.
Thank u for sharing we need you in the employment center in New York City the hiring managers in the city agencies are horrible.
I enjoyed this one, Experience, Learn, and Grow
The WID model for answering behavioral questions is "Experience + Learn = Grow. The intent is to tell employers a story (experience) you had in your past and then explain what you learned from that experience and how you grew from it. The intent is to introduce them to your thought process and help them better understand how you would fit in their organization.
How would you answer a question like how did you handle professional failure and what did you do to overcome it?
Thanks in advance!
Hi... I am from linkedin. The answer is Experience + Learn = Grow. Thx
Good tips on the experience+ learn =grow. I must practice this tip! Now I know why they did not hire me in my last interview :(
Thank you so much :D
oh wow... i never thought about sharing on linked in... thats absolutely perfect..
