Donkey Kong Country Returns is what got me into gaming / collecting.

    Story time!
Okay so I had to be about 16 when this happened. I was also more lazy than I am now (which probably means I was clinically dead), so I was still relying on my parents for my game systems due to not having a job. Of course, like most people, my mom did NOT get the Wii for me after waiting in line because they had sold out and Christmas came around without me getting the one thing I wanted most.
Sometime in January (maybe Febuary, but I can't remember), my family went to Target to get some things they needed for... something. My brother and I head straight for the game section to play games on their kiosks. Of course, there isn't a Wii system to be seen on store shelves, which is what we expected. After playing on the kiosks for some time, my mom came to get us so we could go home. As we get to the car to put the stuff away, my mom asked me to lift the trunk door up and, when I did, I was shocked to find a Wii system sitting in the trunk waiting just for me. "A WII!?!?! B-BUT HOW!?"
Well it turns out my mom also saw that there weren't any Wii systems on the shelves and decided to ask one of the people that work in the back if they have any more Wii systems. The man said "yeah I think so" or something like that and brought one out for her to purchase. Oh and all of this was done without my knowledge so that my brother and I could be surprised once we got to the car.
Needless to say, I was a very happy teen that day. Unfortunately, my nephew (who was a little kid that always cried if he didn't get his way) became the destruction of my Wii some years later, but I will never forget the joy that system brought me from it's retail games to that kick ass Virtual Console you mentioned (Bomberman '93 FTW!!!). Besides, I have a Wii U now, so I can still enjoy that Wii goodness. :)

The Wii was worth it if only for my favourite JRPG of last gen, Xenoblade, which honestly felt more next gen then most games last gen. Great voice acting, beautiful graphics, incredible battle system, fantastic story and characters and one of the best soundtracks of all time makes it an absolute must play.

    • @Klonoa7H

I got to play it in the summer of 2011, before it was even announced for America, so as a Brit, I was happy that the US were getting it to so they could experience it. :)
Probably my favourite action RPG alongside KH II Final Mix and Rogue Galaxy.

The Wii came out roughly a month after my dad died. I have a lot of bittersweet memories of this console and its games. Especially when I played Mario Galaxy I kept thinking "Man, my dad would love this!". I love the console, it gave me a great way to escape reality when I really needed to.

I'm 16 years old, and I received a Wii for my 8th birthday. I'd had a DS for about 2 or 3 years, but this was my first "proper" console, and the memories are priceless. I remember getting Mario Kart Wii and Wario Land Shake It that same day, and later I got to experience games like Super Mario Galaxy, Smash Brawl, Guitar Hero 4, Skyward Sword and so many other classic titles. The Wii also introduced me to a whole new world of gaming I had no idea existed through the Virtual Console. I have equally great memories discovering these old classics as I have playing the newer games, as it was somewhat like uncovering a grand mystery for me. I get so nostalgic just writing this. Thank you, Nintendo, for giving me these life-shaping experiences.

I got the Wii the summer of 2007. I loved the console and it gets WAY too much hate for the gaming community. The system had so many GREAT games and the controllers wasn't bad at all. It really worked! Sure didn't do that much when it comes to how you play the games but it just simply worked. My favorites we're Animal Crossing, Super Mario Galaxy 1&2, Mario Kart Wii, Manhunt 2, Resident Evil Umbrella Chronicles & Darkside Chronicles, Excite Trucks, Batallion Wars 2, Wario Ware Smooth Moves, Smash Bros Brawl, The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy, Medal of honor Heroes 2, Goldeneye.

Old video but I'm a new viewer to the channel.
A high school classmate got it at launch and brought it into a computer class, we played Wii Sports and Raving Rabbids. Right then I decided that was the system I needed, so I wrote a long note to my family asking for it for Xmas, which I got with Twilight Princess.
I was living on the west coast with my dad but visited my mom in NY for holidays, but the Wii came with me every time, over friend's houses, became the way I played GCN games, etc. Five years later I burned out the disk laser, crudely took it apart and fixed it (the front faceplate is held on with duct tape as the softer screws were drilled through) and then softmodded it so I can play my games off an external hard drive. A couple years later I moved back with my mom, and around when this video came out I reminded her how long ago the Wii launch was, so she told me about traveling all through NYC, including the big Nintendo store to find the Wii, and eventually gave up and bought it from a scalper for a hundred bucks more than retail. When I told her about how much I used it, the laser replacement, HDD/emulators, she actually conceded that we got our money's worth.
The Wii also has a special place in my heart not just because of what it does represent but also what it doesn't. Because it came out when I was 16, that's around the time I started working, getting out more, dating, etc. It was around the era where I discovered what I wanted away from games, and then when the times came go home and play a video game, the console that was there was the Wii.

I still remember the Wii launch. On the release date, I went to every fucking retailer I could imagine. Still regret that I didn't pre-order the thing. I had to wait like three weeks later to get one.
Once I picked up the Wii, I felt like the coolest 12 year old in history.
Literally, playing Twilight Princess & Wii Sports really kept me hooked for days on end.
Plus, being able to play Gamecube games on the system made it a thousand times better for me.
    Thank You Nintendo, Thank You.
Then the post launch games were some of the most fun. WarioWare: Smooth Moves, Super Paper Mario, Sonic & the Secret Rings, Super Mario Galaxy, Pokemon Battle Revolution, Super Smash Bros Brawl, House of the Dead 2 & 3, Metal Slug Anthology, Mario Kart Wii, No More Heroes, Trauma Center: Second Opinion & so much more.
So many gems on that console.
Kept me busy, as much as what I did with my Xbox 360 at the time.

I pre-ordered my Wii at Toys R Us in Ottawa, and I only showed up about an hour before the store opened. But the manager came out 15 minutes before opening and said that anyone who didn't have the Wii pre-ordered were out of luck. It was funny to see some people get on their bicycles and pedal to the next store to hopefully luck out on a Wii. :)

Walked in & out in 5 mins, speeded home, stayed up all night making Miis.

I had a to work the night of the launch, and it was actually really exciting seeing all those people lined up at the Walmart I work for waiting for the Wii. It stayed sold out for a whole year in my town. Luckily a co-worker of mine knew exactly how much I wanted it. He put one behind the service desk for me so I can buy it at lunch time. I was incredibly hyped for the Wii. When I was in college, I got up at 4:30am to head to a Gamestop 45 minutes away to pre-order my Wii. My friends thought I was crazy for not pre-ordering a PS3 or buying a 360 but I was determined to get my Wii. I got there at about 5:30am and was the first one there. Other people didn't start showing up until around 7am and at about 8am I was finally able to get my pre-order. There were about 12-15 other people in line. I think I picked up m Wii about two weeks later on release night but Gamestop ran out of controllers to sell so I had to rush over to Walmart where the literally had one Wiimote and nunchuk left. Right after I picked them up, other people were looking for a Wiimote and nunchuk and were pissed that they were all gone. This was awesome, though, because I was able to go back to my college house and play my Wii with my housemates on release night.
I had a blast with the Wii when it first came out. I played Wii sports with my housemates constantly when the Wii came out and we even had a Wii bowling league. Other people on campus would come over to check the Wii out and they played in the league. I got to play Twighlight Princess over Christmas break and thought it was great. Shortly after the console release date, my housemates and I bought several Virtual Console games and that was really awesome to be able to re-live some of the 8 and 16 bit classics. My housemate bought Mario Kart 64 but we didn't realize you needed either a Gamecube controller or Classic Controller so we were pretty pissed about that.
Beyond that month or two after the release date, I don't remember there being very many good games for the Wii other than the two I mentioned and I don't think I was playing it that much. However, the following year I got Super Mario Galaxy, Super Paper Mario and Guitar Hero 3 and I was playing the Wii a ton again. The first time I played Galaxy I was amazed. The graphics were beautiful, the gameplay was amazing, the music was fantastic and I felt like it was the spiritual successor to Super Mario 64 that I had been waiting for. I really like Super Paper Mario and how you could switch between 2D and 3D. Guitar Hero 3 was a blast and I played it constantly with my housemates and even online sometimes. I didn't play my Wii that much after 2008 and then had to sell it but I bought a used one again last year and softmodded it. The Wii makes a great emulation box and now I can play all those games that I missed. I don't feel that the Wii quite lived up to its hype but it is a great system.

Nice Wii launch story! I also have a super nostalgic story that I and my friends can all relate to because we also have a interesting overnight story on the Wii launch. We showed up the night before at a Walmart that was about 45 minutes away because everywhere else was sold out. We got their around 9pm that night and were the 1st people in line inside. We were set up right in the returns area so there was a few places to sit. It was me (with my Wii T-shirt that was handmade with sharpie” and 3 of my other friends. We were doing fine for the 1st few hours and then around 2am the boredom hit. The lady at the counter was sympathetic to our cause and brought us out this little crappy TV and said maybe we can get something to come in on it. We attempted to find some channels but to no avail. We then started to play little games around the store where one person would go out and find an item and then bring it back and the other person had to go out and find that same item within a time limit. This was fun for a bit but then… JACK POT! One of us stumbled upon one of those plug and play Atari machines for like $30. We all were about to spend ALL of our money on the Wii, so we pooled money together to buy the Atari machine to then hook up that that tiny TV and actually game while we waited. We do hours and hours of Atari games that most of us never even played before because we all started on NES but it was fun none the less. So this is around 8am, a few hours until they can release the Wii and one of my other friends who wasn’t in line actually brought us pizza which was awesome and that went well with our tiny Atari games. So the time is almost here for them to hand out the Wii’s but we had one last thing to do… we now have this $30 Atari machine that we have zero use for now…. So we sent one of the guys to go return it. We were cheap kids but we got our money back on that Atari machine that we just used for the last 5 hours and worked out perfectly. We then zombied on home with our Wii’s and proceeded to play Zelda and Smash Bros for a few minutes before we all decided to go to bed and start again as soon as we wake up. So that was my story from my late teenage years of the launch of the flawed but nostalgic Wii system.

After all these years I fully support the fact that someone has to be open minded and positive to new ways of playing games and to artistic direction. I'll never stop gaming, I love your channel!!! Hey Johnny love the show! I never comment but your video brought back so many memories I had to share my Wii launch experience.
I pre-ordered Zelda at GameStop a year before launch for the GameCube, after many delays I found out it was coming to the Wii first!? I went to GameStop to tell them "I have to get this game I've been waiting for so long" the manager said he'd put me on the list to notify me when I could pre-order the Wii. I got the call the day before I was going out of town! I go to the mall the GameStop was in before it opened (around 6:am) there was a line of about 10 people, I thought "all right I have a chance" the manager comes out, counts the people in line points to me and says you're the last one (oh shit!).
On launch day I go down at midnight to pick the Wii up, at the time I had a crappy job and had to go in at 1:30am (also the first day of a second job) got home set up the console and played Wii boxing before going to work. At work all I could think about was Wii, such a long day. My roommate I worked with came up to me and was asking about the Wii, "what's it like? Do you mind if I try it when I get home?" I said "yeah I didn't have a lot of time to play before had to come in, it's cool you want to play it."
When I finally got off work I had to go straight to my new job for a few hours! I remember reading the Wii instruction manual I brought with me when I had time, thinking all my friends are probably having a great time playing my new system and I'm stuck here! : (
That day seemed to take forever but when I finally got home it was worth it! I played the Wii for hours I had Zelda, RedSteel, Excite Truck and Wii sports (obviously) to play! So many fantastic memories and the wait made it that much more memorable.

My on-line pre-ordered Wii was delivered a day early, so I had it already when the console was basically unavailable for the first 2 months.
Wii sports (bowling) was incredible, even my grandmother played it! and liked it!
It started a New Years eve tradition, of playing Wii. I took the Wii to my sisters house.
We play Mario Party, Raving Rabbids 1 & 2, Super Mario Galaxy 1 & 2.
This year we hope to finish Super Mario Galaxy 2 (100%).

I would like to mention that it's such a coincidence that yesterday I moved my Wii from the inside of my shelf where it's been gathering dust for years. Since, I got my PS4 Pro I had to make room for it and my old PS3, so I had to move the thing out of the way. Anyway, I've had fond memories with my Wii, considering it was my first console not handheld that I've ever owned, being ecstatic about playing Super Smash Bros Brawl, discovering awesome games like Madworld, No More Heroes, Tatsunoko vs. Capcom and all of the other great games I owned and played on it. The Wii was an awesome console and I won't ever forget the good times I had with it and my family. ^_^

A employee there we knew contacted us immediately when stock was coming in and I had money saved up. Throughout my time playing the Wii some of my favorite games were Mario Galaxy 1&2, No More Heroes 1&2, Sin & Punishment Star Successor, Fire Emblem Radiant Dawn, Madworld, Wii Sports Resort, Mario Kart Wii, Xenoblade Chronicles, Pandora's Tower, Goldeneye 007, Tatsunoko vs Capcom, Smash Bros Brawl, Donkey Kong Country Returns, Zelda Skyward Sword, etc.

My midnight launch was a shady experience. Only place left with stock was in a very shady area of Manchester. Had to park round the back of a mall which was pitch black and go in the rear entrance. Once in the store it was great, people dressed up as Mario and Luigi and handing out mince pies. Everyone else's in line was really nice and fun. But then coming out into a known gangland area with hundreds of pounds worth of kit you just had a feeling you were going to get mugged for it all so it was a strange mix of fun and tension at the same time. Most memorable console launch for me that's for sure.

I was going to make SURE I had a Wii Console. So, I got to Walmart (Walmart and Gamestop are the only stores that sold it, and Gamestop was already sold out) at 11:53 A.M. I waited all day long, from then until after Midnight to get a Wii. My wife also came there close to 2 P.M., and she brought a few friends to sit in line with us. I got the first Wii that night. When I got the counter, they actually DROPPED my Wii. I told them "I'm not taking that one" and they gave me another one.
In all, I walked away with FIVE Wii's that night and sold four of them. With the help of selling the four Wii's and the one extra PS3 I bought, I was able to pay for my PS3, Wii, and have money left over. My Gamestop only received two PS3's and I was able to get them both. The Manager knew me, and I had asked for the PS3 long before anyone else. My friend also pre-ordered one, but in the end, he sold his to me. So that is how I wound up with two.
That was a long and fun, and tiring night. My wife and I kept EVERYONE in order and in line all day long. Walmart didn't care. When they called us to get the Wii's, we went from the Garden Center, all the way to the Lay-a-way. That was over half the store. Anyone could have ran on ahead, but we got everyone to sign a piece of paper, with their name and the time they got there. They could go to get something to eat, etc. and still maintain their spot in line, as long as they didn't leave for hours on end.
When we all scurried to the back, we AGAIN, all got in a single file line according to the list. I'm sure those worthless Walmart employee's were glad we were there. If not, it would have been chaos. Either way, it was a great time and one I'll always remember. I'm currently working on completing the Wii. I have around 930+ games for it. It will be my 41st complete library, of my 12,500+ games, and 337 consoles.

Hey Johnny, I went out to my local Walmart on midnight-launch night back in 2006. I'm in line to discover they only had twenty five units and I was number twenty six in line. I haul ass to my local Target and camped out all night long until the next morning at 8am. I recall freezing my ass off as I waited for the doors to open. I got my system and the rest is history. Of course I didn't see another Wii on the shelf for almost two years later!!! Hopefully, the NES Classic Mini will be in stock before 2016 xmas. And yes, I did get a Mini on launch. The Wii is still a system I play until this day. The big reason I still play the system, is the Homebrew channel. With a simple softmod, one can play many retro games from many systems with the Wii. And with the wireless Wavebird controller, makes it all the sweeter to play. Also, using a component cable is a must for the ultimate video experience!
This system is dear to my heart to this day, and thank you Nintendo for making my life just a bit more magical!!!

also one of the best things to Nintendo's behest is that this is the only last gen console that is easily moddable... which opens up all kinds of avenues with homebrew, emulation, and other great stuff. Also being able to save Wii and GameCube games to an external hard drive was great.

I was working at Gamestop for the launch. We didn't do a midnight launch because that township wouldn't give our store authorization to stay open past a certain time. I remember there were 2 high-school kids waiting a couple hours before we opened. They said they didn't reserve one, and we told them we wouldn't have extra units, and they still waited. I remember they were still there after all the reserves were picked up and asked if we had extras, and literally cried when there were none.

I had to wait until a few days after launch to get the system. Had one pre-ordered but was away at college the day it released, got home a few days later and picked it up along with a classic controller and a Wii shop gift card. First game I played was Twilight Princess. So many great memories. The Virtual Console was obviously awesome but so was WiiWare, especially Konami's Re-Birth series, really enjoyed Contra. That service also brought Mega Man 9 and 10, which was cool. The library for the Wii did have a lot of shovelware but anybody who says it wasn't a machine for 'core' gamers just didn't pay attention. There was Zelda Twilight Princes and Skyward Sword, Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2, Metroid Prime 3: Corruption, No More Heroes 1 and 2, Sin & Punishment Star Successor, Punch-Out!!, Monster Hunter Tri, Sonic Colors, Donkey Kong Country Returns, GodenEye 007, Epic Mickey, Medal of Honor Heroes 2, Mario Kart Wii, Bully Scholorship Edition, Klonoa, Wii Sports Resort, MadWorld, House of the Dead Overkill, Resident Evil 4: Edition, New Super Mario Bros. Wii and the list goes on. Very underrated machine, I still have it ranked third behind SNES and GBA among my favorite Nintendo systems (consoles and handheld combined). Think the Switch will surpass it eventually but the era of the original Wii will always be one I remember fondly.

If the Wii U came out instead of the Wii in 2006 Nintendo would probably be bankrupt. The Wii U was an appalling failure for Nintendo. The only reason Nintendo can bounce back is due to the Wii's success before. If they had gone from Gamecube straight to Wii U Nintendo would have gone the way of Sega.

I think BTBuck74 means that if the original Wii was also an HD system along with a motion controlled system, back in 2006, it would have probably dominated even harder. I never judge a system based on graphical power alone but the Wii running on older hardware created a clear gap between it and the PS3/360 so many games from that generation that were still popular couldn't come to the Wii, the best selling system of the time. But if the Wii was equal to what the 360/PS3 could do (like the Wii U) it probably would have done even better
I also don't know if having the tablet would have been a thing. Just replace the tablet with the standard Wii controllers as the unique controller. Does that make sense?

The day after launch I went to my friend's house as he had gotten it. We ended up trying boxing on Wii Sports and despite it being the first time for me I beat him repeatedly. Problem was, he wanted to win so badly he said we're going to keep playing until he wins. I think after about 2 hours I just let him win so we could move on. Boxing and the sword adventure on Wii Sports Resort were probably some of my best workouts I've ever had. I still use the Wii to this day. Last night I played some N64 games throught the virtual console (Mario Party 2, Paper Mario 64, and Pokemon Puzzle League) I also played Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles since it also plays Gamecube games. ALSO if you haven't played Crystal Chronicles yet, Johnny. YOU HAVE TO It's probably my 3rd best multiplayer experience ever. I actually have two games fully completed for the Nintendo Wii. Those two games are Tatsunoko Vs Capcom, and Castle of Shikigami III. Despite the system getting shit on for the amount of shovelware that it put out, the one thing you have to commend the Wii for is when they wanted to release a quality game that would appeal to gamers, they knew exactly how to do it. Despite the PlayStation 3 and XBOX 360 being considered more powerful than the Wii, I hear a lot of people say that Xenoblade Chronicles is considered the best jrpg of that generation of consoles.

You wanna know why the Wii is a great game system? (Other than Super Mario Galaxy)
It's because it's a spectacular emulation machine! Probably the easiest console to hack, really easy to install emulators on it, it will run pretty much any non-3D system, then you plug it to your trusty old CRT TV (The Wii looks amazing on a CRT btw), sit on a comfortable couch, maybe with friends for some local multiplayer fun, fire up those emulators or Virtual Console games (which were a godsend to me) plug in the classic controller Pro or just use the Wiimote sideways (or heck even use a custom Classic Controller shaped like a SNES, Genesis or Neo Geo controller, anything will do!) and have an absolute blast! It feels almost like you're playing on the real deal consoles!
Seriously though, I have the Wii to thank for being able to play Turbografx 16, Genesis and Neo Geo, I grew up on a SNES but I was very glad to be able to play the other 16 bit systems and find out what I was missing out on, and hoo boy was I missing out!
Of course I could have emulated them on the PC all along, but back then I wasn't well-versed in emulation, and anything that wasn't ZSNES or Visual Boy Advance was alien to me...

I was so unhappy when I got the Wii for Christmas because I had a faulty system... technically the sensor bar, so when I tried to point the Wii remote at the screen, it would never focus. It made playing games like Super Mario Galaxy impossible. I never took the system back because I had nothing to compare it to. None of my immediate friends had a Wii. I eventually sold it, only to have a friend later on convince me that I had a sensor bar problem. So... I bought a new Wii, and low and behold, it worked perfectly. Rocky start to my introduction with the Wii, but overall it ended okay :)

Some of my favorite games on Wii are Just Dance series, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Reflex, Goldeneye 007, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10, Wii Sportd Resort and many Virtual Consoles games.

    10 years already?!?
I got mine on boxing day 2006 my parents were lucky enough to be at the register at game right as someone was returning a sealed one they had got for Christmas. That was the only one the store had and my parents snagged it for me with Zelda. I was so shocked that they actually managed to get me one since id heard nowhere had them.
To make things better it was the day after I got my ps3 so I had so many great memories gaming that Christmas.

I purchased my Wii a week after it released. I didn't know how limited they were but I remember casually walking to the back of Kmart while a bunch of older woman ran through the store to grab one. The Wii was my 1st Nintendo console since the snes and I loved the console the 1st year and a half. I quit playing the Wii because it seemed like there was a long drought of big name games after metroid corruption. I ignored the console until last year when I purchased a Wii U and started catching up on My Wii game backlog. I think the Wii will be appreciated more in the future. Today I often wonder if Nintendo would have ran Microsoft and Sony out of the business had the Wii released during the ps2 era which would have sucked. Imagine the third party support the Wii would have recieved had it released with the ps2. The motion controls were awesome with shooters that weren't as huge during the ps2 era. It's funny because it took 9 years for me to really get into the Wii game library. It's funny because the graphics were awesome with Nintendo published games. It wasn't until I picked up no moreheroes, Zelda, house of the dead, resident evil 4 that I started noticing how horrible the graphics were during the dawn of the HD transition.

I was first in line at the Best Buy in town! I was only 11 at the time and begged my dad to let me, I had been saving up money for almost a year and it was the first console I ever bought all on my own.

Unfortunately I was absent during launch but I was there when the final important titles such as The Last Story and Pandora's Tower arrived. Also the optimal setup for the Wii was the smallest plasma TV from LG which had the same native resolution of the Wii along with the component cables.

Grasshopper is on the list of Switch devs so No More Heroes 3 is likely happening.

I hope so because they recently released Silver Case HD (finally in English) earlier this year for PC/Steam. Now they need to get on Michigan:Hell Report.
