Out of all the collectors out there, I think you and iretrogamer have the most meaningful ones. It's one thing to have everything, but you both have something very special.
This, put simply, is Happy Console Gamer at its best as a show. Fast-paced, full of fun and nostalgia and unlike anything else out there in the way it makes you recall your own memories and try some retro gems. Love it!
When you look at the way classic gaming and collecting is going this channel is a breath of fresh air. Thank you for actually opening and playing your games and also for not hording a bunch of games that you do not even like.
Collecting old games in the early 2000s was awesome because people couldn't get rid of them fast enough. A couple of friends even gave me some of their NES and SNES games for free: "No idea what you're doing with those, I mean there is such a thing as PS2 out there, you know!" Even games that people had nostalgia for, you could still easily find for just a couple of bucks, because the demand wasn't there.
So many great arcade conversions. And so many great sidescrolling action games. Oh, and so many great shmups, too! The Genesis is truly a console worthy of the GODS!
I love your enthusiasm and energy you have for these classic games in your video. The sega genesis is one of my most favorite systems. To me it gave such a great arcade experience that other systems couldn't capture. I still have it hooked up and play it today. Great video.
That's what retro gaming is all about: memories. It's not something to have on your shelf and brag about how much you paid for that, it's about the good times you had with it, with friends and family and with yourself, enjoying the game.
I really like pretty much all the stuff Sega did and miss them as a console making company. The genesis is cool to me because my brother owned it and it was one of the first consoles I ever played, I remember we had a lot of fun playing forgotten worlds 2 players. The saturn is especially nostalgic to me because that was my very first console I ever owned for myself that my dad got me right when it came out, and the Dreamcast is just an underrated masterpiece.
FANTASTIC VIDEO!!!! I love the Genesis so much - Besides my atari computer it was the first console I ever got. I really need to play Revenge of Shinobi; I played and loved Shinobi III - Can't wait for part 2 - Thanks man this was such a treat! Also, I appreciate that you don't have an insane amount and that they are games you like / love and have played. Very important instead of stacking them on shelves!
Thank you for all the memories ya bringing back! The pronounciation of "Herzog Zwei" is like "Hurrtsog Tswoi". It has a german origin, while Herzog is just a name - Zwei means "two"
Great video! This really brought some nostalgia on for me. You also reminded me of some games I had totally forgotten about, like Midnight Resistance! Can't wait for part 2!
I was a Nintendo kid but whenever I got the chance to play some Genesis at a friend's house I was always happy. Now, I love my Mega Drive and I love collecting and playing games for it, but damn can it get expensive.
I wish that were true in Japan. Mega Drive games have gotten pretty damn expensive here in recent years. I'm guessing it might be because the system wasn't as popular here back in the day, it was actually outsold by the PC Engine as well as the Super Famicom.
Dude that's awesome, you should totally buy Alien Soldier while you're there, seriously it's arguably the best 2D action game ever. But it stupidly wasn't released in the states because...reasons. Dumb reasons like...Sega being the usual stupid reasons lol. I'd by Twinkle Tale as well if I was in Japan.
Johnny I've been waiting for this!! Every video you make I'm always fixated on the Genesis games behind you and always wondering when you'll pull them off and talk about them
I have the same connection with Shinobi 3 that you have with Revenge of Shinobi. No clue how many times I played that game. After a while there was no chance of losing unless I was playing on the hardest mode. It is one of those games that is so well made the progress you made in your skill of the game does not seem to lessen with time.
I'm with you, bro! Revenge of Shinobi remains my favorite Genesis game as well to this day. So many memories... Also, super jealous about the signed copy of Streets of Rage.
Gaiares is awesome. I had about 25ish Sega Genesis games before I even had a Genesis and when I finally bought one the first game I popped in was Revenge of Shinobi and I was completely blown away.
"Zwei" is "two" in German. It's pronounced Zv-eye (as in "i") Great stuff Johnny :D Awesome to see a collection video like this where you talk about each game with some in game footage. *Street Fighter voice* PERFECT.
Ah man lol, what a hidden little gem mystic defender was. I thought i was the only one that played it back in the day. The soundtrack is pretty sweet, still in my ipod.
Although the genesis isn't my favorite system, if I were to have a complete collection for any game console, I think it would be the genesis because there are SO MANY underrated games on the genesis and there's so many amazing games.
One of my personal favorite genesis games is Contra Hard Corps. It stands outin a series known for being hard as being the hardest (imo). Multiple characters, paths, endings. A classic.
There's so many amazing Genesis games you need to play if you haven't already. One's I don't see are Contra: Hard Corps, Rocket Knight Adventures, Splatterhouse 2 & 3, Sonic 3 & Knuckles, Gunstar Heroes, Ecco the Dolphin 1 & 2(this may be debatable if it's good), Ristar, Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine, Dynamite Headdy, Vectorman 1 & 2, Tiny Toon Adventures: Buster's Hidden Treasure, Castlevania: Bloodlines and so much more.
Alot of great titles there Johnny, good to see Wonder Boy in Monster World and Streets of Rage series there too, those are among my childhood faves aswell, i did some longplays of those not too long ago.
My Genesis collection is about the size of yours. Kudos on having Warsong (Langrisser) great RTS. Herzog Zwei my friend Mike had and was awesome at it while I sucked. Funny, that game demanded huge bucks just a couple of years after its release. Mike had all the games B4 me. He was MY Andrew growing up. Moonwalker a total guilty pleasure of mine. Revenge of Shinobi and Shinobi III my all time faves. After getting an original copy of Hokuto no Ken (based on the 2nd TV series) I could never go back to Last Battle.
I remember back in the day, Toys R Us had a deal with trade in Sega Genesis system along with games will get you original Playstation. I regret it to this day that I did that.
My Genesis collection is my pride and joy. For some reason, I've collected more Genesis than any other console. So many excellent games on that console. Love that you have two copies of Forgotten Worlds. One of the underrated gems.
Unfortunately, nowadays, especially on very popular mainstream channels, the Genesis is treated as if it doesn't even exist, so many titles are utterly unfairly ignored. It's a real shame and it's definitely unjustified. Such a classic console
Gaming's heyday. The arcade scene was thriving and we were getting pretty faithful home console ports. Once the capabilities of home consoles surpassed those of arcades, the (arcade) industry was doomed.
When Shining in the Darkness came out on the Virtual Console, I really got into it and got all my characters to level 99. I guess you have to be in the right mood to enjoy it.
I remember Golden Axe being a bit of a big deal. I didn't get my Genesis until 1991, so I got Golden Axe 2, which I loved then and still love now. Part one was a great conversion in a lot of ways, and it had the more interesting locales. However, those very familiar with the arcade version would notice certain things that didn't look or play quite right on the home version. I say that because I consider Golden Axe 2 as sort of a demonstration of how much more could have been done with the first game with more time and resources, but within the same four-megabit limitation. Basically, I'm saying GA2 shows that the original could have been much closer to the arcade version in quality, not that it's bad at all. I think it's worth having in some form, if you don't have it. I don't know what prices are. I do own it digitally as well as my original cart. Mark and Classic Game Room are responsible for getting me into Truxton, among others, as well. I think it's fantastic. There's something special about it. I think it's the art direction. I have the Tatsujin cart from Japan, my first import game for the Genesis. I also got the Japanese version of Rolling Thunder 2 thanks to CGR. I like the Japanese version of Streets of Rage 3 a lot. Bare Knuckle 3 has a much better difficulty. I do like the music too, but it's weird and not for everybody. Part two is definitely more accessible that way. Anyway, thank you for sharing this first part, HCG. I enjoyed it.
Herzog was pronounced close enough, but Zwei is pronounced like this: the 'z' makes a 's' sound like in "Sam" 'wei' sounds like 'vye'. It's like 'dye'. The 'w' gets a 'v' sound like in 'van' So when it's said out loud it sounds like "suh-vye" spoken quickly. It's "2" in German.
Your Exile series video is what hooked me to your channel. I could never find anyone who talked about Exile and then there you were covering the whole series.
I love Revenge of Shinobi, I wish I still had my Genesis and games. I sold it years ago. Does anyone remember Spiderman and Batman in Revenge of Shinobi?
As a kid, I grew up with an NES but during the 16 bit era,the Sega Genesis was my console of choice. I still have my original games including Sonic 2 and Streets of Rage 2. My favorite beat em up of all time.
What an amazing collection Johnny! Big fan of your show for years and cannot wait to see what new show you said you were planning on your other episode ;) Big respect for what you do and when i feel sad or down, i always watches your episodes with Rob and especially the Chrismast Specials! :) Your positivity is something that i really really love as i myself is a very postive and always helping person (not to sound extremly lighthearthed :P ) Big ups!
Makes me want to show my Genesis collection now. Honestly, some of these games I did not hear of. Sad that I didn't. I also smiled when I saw that you have the Valis games. Looking forward to part 2.
Great collection. My first console that pretty much got me into gaming.Got rid of my Genesis many years ago, which I regret.I did pick up another console about a year ago,but I don't have the collection i had back than.Trying to collect for it like you mentioned being the high prices. Thanks for sharing.Look forward to the 2nd part.
I love your enthusiasm and also I grew up with the mega drive (genesis) didn't have many games for it: just Streets of rage 2, desert strike, Aladdin, sonic. which I played and replayed a lot. keep up the great work!!
dont worry about the size of your collection. it's refreshing to see someone just show off the games they enjoy to play. there's too many videos on youtube of collectors showing off the enormous collections. they can spend 20 minutes showing it all off, but they never once talk about the games themselves. personally I think collecting is about playing what you own. not trying to get every single game out there.
Wat wat, new video? XD Its awesome you can still get these up while you're having fun at Sakuracon! Your energy in this one is infectious and it really cheered me up after overworking myself... Dude! EXILE... another one I didn't think anyone else cared about! Mystic Defender is 'Kujaku Oh 2" in Japan, and Spellcaster was actually Kujaku Oh 1... so they are directly related! Looking forward to the next part!
My child hood hate for sega has stunted my sega collections growth so i only have about ten sega games. Kind of glad it worked out that way cause now i have lots of sega games to discover as an adult. Great video. You bring me back to my childhood and that great feeling we used to get from getting a new game.
I had a communite center connected to my school and I would go there ever day after school and they had xboxs and one day they added the sega mega geneses drive to it
hey HappyConsoleGamer, i've been a fan of your channels for years now and my first system as a little kid was the sega genesis an i had this thing called the sega channel that came with different games which month! the shining force series is my favorite on the genesis an phantasy star 4 was amazing plus streets of rage 2 is also awesome an there's so many great games on the genesis, my first game ever was sonic the hedgehog! so nice collection video man! :)
Nice collection! I still have my original Genesis but it's not wired up at the moment. Seeing this video makes me want to set it up again. My list would also include Toe Jam and Earl, D&D: Warriors of the Eternal Sun, Zombies Ate my Neighbours, NHL 94.. or 3.. not sure which one I had, Another World, and Warrior of Rome. Played those games A LOT!
I just watched this video and went straight to Amazon to check them out. Why do the good games cost so much! I did buy three based on this video. I'm always looking for good recommendations!
I see Shinobi III: Return of the Ninja Master there! One of my favourite games on the Megadrive. Also, Earthworm Jim! Yes! Can't wait to see the next episode. Woooooo!
Nice video. Good to see that all the games you own are ones that mean something to you. I hate to see people just stocking up on games just to have them on their shelves. Mega Drive is a console I have memories of friends owning, but I was a SNES guy. Still lots of great games on there though! Cheers ;)
I remember as a kid seeing the Genisis bundled with Altered Beast, I wanted it so bad. Fast forward to Christmas, I got the bundle with Streets of Rage 2. I was the happiest kid ever!
Appreciate the time you take to put the game footage in, it adds a LOT to the video
Genesis will always hold special place in my heart. It was the first console I bought with my own money. So many great gsmes on it.
Out of all the collectors out there, I think you and iretrogamer have the most meaningful ones. It's one thing to have everything, but you both have something very special.

The Genesis is such a great system . so many good games
only 20% of the world call it a "Genesis"
Yes that's true.
"iRobot says 20 percent of the world's vacuums are now robots"
That's what retro gaming is all about: memories. It's not something to have on your shelf and brag about how much you paid for that, it's about the good times you had with it, with friends and family and with yourself, enjoying the game.
Thanks for giving Mystic Defender some love, Spell-caster was a great SMS game!

It is super awesome to hear other people's memories with Genesis games. Thanks for sharing man! Subscribed :)
great video, one of my favorites from you. love the enthusiast and nostalgia. looking forward to part 2
I love it when you talk about the Genesis. Can't wait for part 2.
Thank you for all the memories ya bringing back!

Yes, I'm American. I'm a university student in Tokyo.
Dude that's awesome, you should totally buy Alien Soldier while you're there, seriously it's arguably the best 2D action game ever.
But it stupidly wasn't released in the states because...reasons. Dumb reasons like...Sega being the usual stupid reasons lol. I'd by Twinkle Tale as well if I was in Japan.
one good thing growing up in the hood.
we had every single sega mastersystem game that came out.
all of them. we might of had 1000 or more games.
I can't imagine anyone liking Budokan more than Final Fantasy 1 on the NES. I mean... FF1 is actually playable and stuff.
Johnny I've been waiting for this!! Every video you make I'm always fixated on the Genesis games behind you and always wondering when you'll pull them off and talk about them

Wish I had all my Genesis games still but I gave my collection away to a needy kid down the street. At least they went to a good home to be enjoyed.
I did the same. Though I've managed to pick up some of may favorites again.
You're a good guy Drewsefer89!
I did the same with my ps1
Drewsefer89 That's really awesome of you. Thanks for that
James Cadd Awesome
I'm with you, bro! Revenge of Shinobi remains my favorite Genesis game as well to this day.
So many memories...
Also, super jealous about the signed copy of Streets of Rage.
Gaiares is awesome. I had about 25ish Sega Genesis games before I even had a Genesis and when I finally bought one the first game I popped in was Revenge of Shinobi and I was
completely blown away.
John, I love your videos. You're awesome. Thank you for uploading them. Great stuff.
Your video on DJ Boy made me seek it out .....a lost gem from a bygone era ! great video
Starting off with Altered Beast brought a smile on my face
Alisia Dragoon was my favorite game from Genesis and you are the first person to mention it!
I never got a Genesis (I had a SNES), but I remember being so jealous of those game cases. I had to buy those plastic cases for my SNES games.
"Zwei" is "two" in German. It's pronounced Zv-eye (as in "i")
Great stuff Johnny :D Awesome to see a collection video like this where you talk about each game with some in game footage. *Street Fighter voice* PERFECT.
So excited for this! You really turned me on to one of my favorite games last battle. Fantastic game I think it's very underrated. Thank you so much!
Altered Beast was the first game I played in my life and I remember how wonderful moment was
Your making me want to buy a Genesis again. Great memories.
Sick little collection. I did a video exactly like this a few weeks ago. The Mega Drive is a great system ❤️
TheGebs24 all this sega love
Amazing collection Johnny, Genesis is still my favorite Console of all time!
Midnight Resistance rules! I loved getting to go weapon shopping after every level.
The Blast Processing in this video is over 1000!
I see what u did there lol
Blast processing has risen.
Kevinb1821 It has risen indeed!
Mega drive's blast processing breaks vegeta's glasses even today
Ah man lol, what a hidden little gem mystic defender was. I thought i was the only one that played it back in the day. The soundtrack is pretty sweet, still in my ipod.
I used to play Last Battle all the time on Genesis, I had NO idea it was based on Fist of the North Star. What a hard game too
I didn't grow up with a Genesis at home, but when I did play it, the controls were never as tight as solid titles on the NES or SNES.
A classic.
LittleBigKid707b I'm glad you solved that problem. It's a shame more people haven't played it.
Awesome episode, John! The Genesis defined my early teenage years, along with my dad's Playboy Playmate VHS tapes and Emmanuelle on Skinemax. Hahaha!
You're so on the money with Revenge of Shinobi. Kudos to you for even mentioning it.
I remember back in the day, Toys R Us had a deal with trade in Sega Genesis system along with games will get you original Playstation. I regret it to this day that I did that.
Wow, a lot if good memories with the Genesis. I remember having that and a generation 1 sega cd. We had so many of the same games!
My Genesis collection is my pride and joy. For some reason, I've collected more Genesis than any other console. So many excellent games on that console. Love that you have two copies of Forgotten Worlds. One of the underrated gems.
BrettDrumming Ha I feel the same way. So so many great games that are exclusive. Sometimes I look at them and just go damn. Ha.
forgotten worlds sadly...gets forgotten. i thought the conversion on genesis was great and i too feel that its an underrated gem on the system.
Unfortunately, nowadays, especially on very popular mainstream channels, the Genesis is treated as if it doesn't even exist, so many titles are utterly unfairly ignored. It's a real shame and it's definitely unjustified. Such a classic console

Gainax designed Alisia Dragoon. The Japanese cover is awesome. My first Mega Drive game.
Please, we need more video like this. This is what Happy Console Gamer eas all about back in the days when I subbed! Love this kind of videos.
Herzog was pronounced close enough, but Zwei is pronounced like this:
the 'z' makes a 's' sound like in "Sam"
'wei' sounds like 'vye'. It's like 'dye'. The 'w' gets a 'v' sound like in 'van'
So when it's said out loud it sounds like "suh-vye" spoken quickly.
It's "2" in German.
That was my first console! Gun Star heroes, sonic 2, and Space Harrier 2 were my favorites!
Your Exile series video is what hooked me to your channel. I could never find anyone who talked about Exile and then there you were covering the whole series.
I love Revenge of Shinobi, I wish I still had my Genesis and games. I sold it years ago. Does anyone remember Spiderman and Batman in Revenge of Shinobi?
sega genesis is my favorite console ever
Mine 2! ~_~
Same here! And I actually grew up a Nintendo kid.
But the BRUTE FORCE of the Genesis cannot be ignored >_>
FinalBaton, absolutely, coincidentally, Thunder Force IV says hello lol.
As a kid, I grew up with an NES but during the 16 bit era,the Sega Genesis was my console of choice. I still have my original games including Sonic 2 and Streets of Rage 2. My favorite beat em up of all time.
Word. SoR 2 is also my fave beat 'em up of all time
What an amazing collection Johnny! Big fan of your show for years and cannot wait to see what new show you said you were planning on your other episode ;)
Big respect for what you do and when i feel sad or down, i always watches your episodes with Rob and especially the Chrismast Specials! :) Your positivity is something that i really really love as i myself is a very postive and always helping person (not to sound extremly lighthearthed :P ) Big ups!
Capcom should do a collection featuring the Maximo and Ghost and Goblins/Ghouls and Ghosts games.
You chose pretty well every game I owned in the late 80's.
Makes me want to show my Genesis collection now.
Honestly, some of these games I did not hear of. Sad that I didn't. I also smiled when I saw that you have the Valis games.
Looking forward to part 2.
great Sega Genesis collection I agree shinobi is the best game on the Genesis.💣💣💣💯

Nice to see some love for Alisia Dragoon. A valued piece of my collection that few seem to have had the pleasure to experience.
You sound pretty excited the way you're able to cover each game featured in this video, and it makes me want to play some Sega Genesis afterwards. ;)
Wat wat, new video? XD Its awesome you can still get these up while you're having fun at Sakuracon! Your energy in this one is infectious and it really cheered me up after overworking myself... Dude! Kind of glad it worked out that way cause now i have lots of sega games to discover as an adult. Great video. You bring me back to my childhood and that great feeling we used to get from getting a new game.
My 1st console happy memories
I respect that you pare down your collection to just the games you really enjoy instead of collecting whatever
I had a communite center connected to my school and I would go there ever day after school and they had xboxs and one day they added the sega mega geneses drive to it
you need to upload more stuff man, its great :)
Great video Johnny! I can't wait for part 2.
What an amazing collection and lovely video! 😊
Love to hear you talk about you passion!!!
That's pretty cool u kept those, I remember playing on that system, but I never owned one, remember that sooo well, crazy how video games evolved.
hey HappyConsoleGamer, i've been a fan of your channels for years now and my first system as a little kid was the sega genesis an i had this thing called the sega channel that came with different games which month! the shining force series is my favorite on the genesis an phantasy star 4 was amazing plus streets of rage 2 is also awesome an there's so many great games on the genesis, my first game ever was sonic the hedgehog! so nice collection video man! :)
"It's so funny Michael Jackson has passed away now..."
Really like your videos, your enthusiasm shines through, keep up the great work :)
GENESIS DOES!!!
I miss that old rivalry, best commercials.
Ya can't do this on Nintendo 🎤
Wreckless Nostalgia WHAT NINTENDONT!
I just watched this video and went straight to Amazon to check them out. Why do the good games cost so much! I did buy three based on this video. I'm always looking for good recommendations!
“It’s so funny Michael Jackson has passed away now”.......those words could have been chosen better lol!
part 2? oh damn it! i wanted to see them all now! cool video though, brought back a lot of memories.
Phantasy Star IV is the best Rpg on the system
FranktheGDTank Agreed. I think it's one of the best of the 16 bit era.
One of the best RPGs of all time.
Yeah thank god for emulators.
Agreed - I had such a religious experience with that game
I love Phantasy Star 2. But the dungeons are a pain to navigate.
Cheers ;)
Whohoo WonderBoy in MonsterWorld :)
great collection!
I see a Megadrive game still on the shelf just under Chrono Trigger.
great vid as usual! don't quit the show we love it!
Great video! Can't wait for part 2!
I remember as a kid seeing the Genisis bundled with Altered Beast, I wanted it so bad. Fast forward to Christmas, I got the bundle with Streets of Rage 2. I was the happiest kid ever!
Really enjoyed this, thanks. Would love a sense collection talk through, dreamcast etc . Love how and when you got them
