I'd definitely put Castlevania: Bloodlines and Aladdin in my top 10 list.

@@tuxysmagicaljukebox5431 I honestly agree, in general I think most of the Disney platformers that everyone loses their minds about are overrated.
Ghouls 'n Ghosts is my favorite game in the Ghosts 'n Goblins series, bar none. That's not to say that Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts isn't amazing, but I feel that regular, non-super Ghouls 'n Ghosts is the best. I have it on the Genesis, SuperGrafx, Master System, Saturn, and the arcade PCB. I've played the X68000 version. I always make sure to complete the game. SuperGrafx version offered me the most challenge because it only offers a couple of continues.
But it's no Greendog.
HCG is easily one of my favorite YT channels. As a gamer myself, I truly appreciate your passion and enthusiasm for videogaming. It shines in your videos my man. Keep up the fantastic work!
My two favorite Genesis games are Shinobi III and Castlevania Bloodlines. Absolutely amazing stuff!

Phantasy star 4 is my favourite game of all time, made me a fan of JRPG's the genre that I love to this day.
My first experience with the Phantasy Star series was Phantasy Star online on the Sega Dreamcast and to this say it’s one of my absolute favorite games ever! Too bad i never got into Phantasy Star earlyer
Mine, too. My first time I played, the "big moment" with Alys hit me like nothing I'd experienced in a video game (or movie) before. I honestly didn't see that coming.
Ghouls and Ghost was the first game I broke a controller over....... lol

I'm digging the Sword of Vermilion mention! Great RPG game that doesn't get enough credit and really showcases the solid audio capabilities of the Genesis :)
It plays kinda janky though, it's tough to get into.
Sword of Vermilion is extremely underrated. Not sure why it gets so much hate - its a great RPG and the (non-boss) combat is really fun!

Shinobi
Crusader of Centy (Called 'Soleil' here in Australia) was fantastic! Easily my favourite Genesis game. Glad to see you appreciated it.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Hyperstone Heist is my favorite.

If you don't understand that the run button makes the whole game, then you are a TMNT amateur and have no business commenting on the game in the first place.

Love the Revenge of Shinobi pick for #1. That game absolutely blew my mind when it came out on the Genesis. The 16-bit era had truly arrived.

One of my favorite of the 16 bit era games. It's so damn good. Hard as fuck though. I think I can get to level 50 before I go nuts. LOL.

Because of the weak sound on the Mega Drive / Genesis you better play the SNES version.

If I ever did sit down and think about my own top games for the system I would have to list Herzog Zwei. It would be in my top 5 for sure.
I just can't believe that I finally found someone that likes the Revenge of the Shinobi the same way as I. Never in a Top Ten list I saw RotS higher than 5 and I was so frustrated! I'm so happy to see that a lot of games that we have in common, too!

Really enjoyed this mate it’s so nostalgic, Gunstar heroes was one of my favourites along with Castle of illusion, Strider (for sure) Earth worm Jim, Eco the dolphin, Road Rash, Altered Beast, Quack shots, street fighter 2, Mortal Kombat 1-2, Micro machines. Sonic n streets of Rage like u mentioned. Fantastic console.
Dude your enthusiasm and energy is contagious. I was around the same age when I finally got my hands on a genesis and a bunch of classic games and you're right; there's something special about these games and the age we were when we enjoyed them? Bravo!

I haven't quite played enough Mega Drive games yet to confidently make a list of my favorites, but I have really enjoyed Phantasy Star IV, Shinobi III, Beyond Oasis, Shining Force, Streets of Rage 1&2, Ristar and Sonic 2.
Phantasy Star IV still stands as one of my favorite RPGs.
Try Landstalker and Crusade of Centy if you liked Beyond Oasis, Warsong (Langrisser) 1 and Langrisser 2 (there are english patched ROMs for this one) if you like Shining Force, also Shining Force 2 is better in every way than the first.
Beyond Oasis is the best!
Great list and more importantly, a very entertaining video that gives us the chance to either discover some old gems or remember the ones we have forgotten. I wish I knew Phantasy Star back then, in 2019 I just don't have the patience for the grinding...I wish that saga was remastered. Anyways, from the top of my head, some of my favorite games in Genesis where: Gunstar Heroes, Contra H.C, SFII: CE, Earthworm Jim, Castlevania, Mega bomberman, TMNT: Hyperstone Heist, Yu Yu Hakusho, Road Rash 2 and finally Sonic & Knuckles.

I’m only 26 but you’ve showed me so many games to check out over numerous videos, but the best thing that you cannot fake is your passion and enthusiasm in each game you pick. It’s contagious! I have a baby girl and I want her to play a lot of these classic games! Thank you for these videos.

here in the uk crusader of centy is called soleil, i still have my copy i remember getting it because it looked like zelda with more emphasis on animal companions

I'll have to go and play that one again. I'm pretty sure I finished it back when it was released, but it never stuck with me, and I often forget that it even exists.

I still play the Streets of Rage Trilogy alot , I enjoy that and Double Dragons on this system. Shinobi games , Shining in the Datkness , Super Thunderblade , Last Battle ,Golden Axe Trilogy man those were days playing those with friends. But now I get to introduce my kids to these games not just on my Genesis collection but it made me feel good when my Kids asked me to pre order a Genesis mini for their birthdays. I swear it was awesome to hear them ask that question lol so I ordered it for them.

Great list dude. The Mega Drive is such a special console to me. Christmas 1991 we got the console with Altered Beast, Sonic and Road Rash. To this day my favourite Christmas ever. Makes me super emotional to think about those times

Batman and Robin is such wicked game, forgot about that for a minute. The graphics and soundtrack are fucking unbelievable. They threw everything they could at that game, technology wise.
Just bought SEGA GENESIS CLASSICS for Switch. Stoked to have most of these games. Love this channel!
Your top 10 is very unique. I'd even say mostly hidden gems.
I also recommend Uncharted Waters.
Back in the day, this game was probably the most advanced open world game I've played.
Thank you Johnny for mentioning Last Battle. This game is much better than many people give it credit for. Played through it again recently and it was still fun. People that make fun of it don't understand how incredible this game was for its time. The map system really gave it depth.
Love these top 10 list videos. Really I don't care all that much what's on them I just enjoy hearing people talk about games they like and what made them special to them even if I never played the games myself.

Awesome video & great list of your favourite Genesis games! I have so many great memories growing up with that system as well. I remember renting Streets of Rage 2 almost every weekend...to the point where my brother was getting pissed with me haha. But it’s such a classic & I am happy I realized this at such a young age. I also love all of the EA NHL games, Road Rash 2, SKITCHIN, Batman Returns & who can forget Michael Jackson’s Moonwalker, haha. This list really goes on & on!

Revenge of Shibobi is so good. I have to commend you on a #1 I didn't see coming. Road Rash series is perhaps my favorite Genesis games but at that age I just wanted to ride motorcycles, and that game let me do it and beat people with chains, to boot!

Never owned one..I was kinda of a Nintendo guy...but man do I have Mega Drive memories from my friends..and I admit I wanted one, especially when we played Streets of Rage 2, Story of Thor, Sonic 2 and so many other games!

It’s hard to argue with your list. I loved Sword of Vermillion. That too came with a thick handbook. I adored some of the village music. Great list.
I notice he mentioned the Phantasy Star II guide, but not the Sword of Vermillion guide.
I never got much into Shining Force 1 for some reason, but I love SHF2 SO DAMN MUCH! Also, waiting for this 90 minutes episode on Revenge of the Shinobi

I always loved the mixed horizontal and overhead shooter parts in Thunder Force II. The overhead levels were very similar in style to the classic Namco game Bosconian.

I started to watch your videos recently and it feels like we are speaking the same language. Specially in this video. I can't belive (with the exceptions of Sonic, Ghouls n' ghosts nad Shinobi) I own and have finished all of these games. Maybe because I'm specially an RPG gamer . But the cohincidence is such that I also have played and finished Strider. I think what you have to add to be a "twin brother" is a basketball game like NBA Jam or such. Keep up the good work!
Great choices. Old school RPG/JRPG and Strat/Sim games are my favorite. Your list is almost identical to what mine would be. With an exception or two because of nostalgia of course.

Revenge of shinobi is one of my favourites too, in the UK the megadrive came with a 3-1 cart that had streets of rage,sonic and revenge of shinobi. Endless fun!
This is a good video, great list and an excellent console! I enjoyed trying to guess which game would be next just by the bg music before each reveal! I hadn't known about another difference in RoS; the title screen is different! It totally stood out to me, 'cause I remember an angrier expression and no eyebrow scar! Search the image and compare (;

Excellent list Sir! I myself am a big Crusader of Centy fan. And I bought the Sega Six Pack when I first got my Retro 5. Unfortunately I did not grow up with the Sega Genesis, but I was (and still am) very happy with my SNES. That being said I bought Crusader of Centy Japanese version cheap and I play it on Retro 5 via Language Translation Patch. Love that Link To The Past feel.
You forgot the one and only Castlevania on Genesis, Bloodlines! Not the most memorable one but still a solid game.
Bloodlines is my favorite Castlevania game. Rondo Of Blood PC Engine would be #2.

My favorite Genesis game is “Wonderboy in Monster World”. Bought it in 1994 while on vacation in Phoenix, AZ when I was 14. I lent it to my younger brother’s friend & he beat it, which made me get into the game as I kept trying to beat it, which eventually I did. The game is a masterpiece. Also, loved the shooter “Vapor Trail”, very very underrated.
You're right, Strider should have made it in your top 10.
