I had Dynamite Dux as a kid and i actually have some great nostalgic memories for that game. Probably the first game I ever finished (it's super easy and short)
Johnny, I can't stress enough how much I love your enthusiasm for all things nostalgic. I share the same love of the Master System as you, and my favorite game of all time as well is Phantasy Star. Seeing this video pop up put a smile on my face before I even began to watch it. Thank you for the nostalgic joy you always bring me with your videos! Cheers!

My uncle gave my siblings and I a master system (we were too poor to own a game console, it was the only one we ever had) and we had Rambo 2, choplifter and ghost house. Great games, I still can hear the Rambo music and sound effects
Master System was a great system! I've got about 25 games from my childhood but I'm going to be putting them up for sale as they don't get much use these days. King's Quest and Alex Kidd in Miracle World were some of my favorite games. Thanks for sharing the memories!

Ninja Gaiden 6. Wonderboy III - The Dragon's Trap 7. Ys - The Vanished Omens 8. Space Harrier 9. Fantasy Zone 10. Shinobi

I love when you do videos like this! So much fun. Man that commadore monitor! That was the first monitor I ever played video games on with the Atari 800 XL computer. You really make me want to track one down now
I got mine in 1987-88, I was 8 years old. My most played games was Shinobi, Double Dragon, Vigilante, Astro Warrior. I owned lots more enduro racer, safari hunt, hang on, ghostbusters, great football, tennis, etc. I even had a few of the little cartridges. This brings back so many memories. I want to buy one for my kids sometime soon. I owned all Segas no Nintendo’s. I had Master system, Genesis, Saturn, every PlayStation 1-4. I still own every PlayStation but I really want a Master System an Genesis again. I have a local store with Master Systems an good selection of games. I forgot pro wrestling, I wore that game out.
Ys was named after a legendary sunken city in the region of Bretagne in France, similar to the myths of Atlantis. Funny thing is, I started playing the series with Ys 7 and that's when I first heard of the legend. And I apparently grew up like 50 kilometers away from the supposed location of Ys, lol. It was near the city of Quimper but I had absolutely never heard of that story before the games. Even in France, it's a super obscure legend.
You can tell the top games are close to hi is heart. For good reason, y's was my first RPG and I loved it. It's a highlight in my Master System collection
Loving these top 10 vids from you Johnny keep them oh and my top 10 on the SMS are 10. Wonder Boy in Monster Land 9. Rastan 8. R-Type 7. Golvellius 6. Golden Axe Warrior 5. Shinobi 4. Fantasy Zone 3. Ys the Vanished Omen 2. Wonder Boy 3 The Dragons Trap 1. Phantasy Star
Our lists are vastly different, but I respect your picks. Wonder Boy III is my favorite of all time on the SMS. It's my top choice, closely followed by Zillion. Great video, HCG!
I still remember seeing a dragon from Phantasy Star in one of the original Sega Master System commercials, and basically creaming my pants. I HAD to have that game. It took a lot of wheelin' and dealing with a kid up the block for me and my friend to get ahold of a copy, but it was all worth it. The shear excitement was overwhelming, we were completely mesmerized playing it. My #1 fave as well. I love hearing game nostalgia stories. Reminds me of my own adventures, when the internet wasn't a thing yet.
Thanks for this look back at a system I'm not as familiar with, Johnny! I always love your enthusiasm and nostalgia for games. Keep up the great work, man.
I'm pretty sure both Phantasy Star and Miracle Warriors would make my Master System top 10 list as well. I beat Phantasy Star again very recently and I was a long way into Miracle Warriors (also recently) when my cart died. Very fun video to watch. Thank you!
Master System Mini!!! Johnny...can you help make the SMS mini happen by making a video or by talking to one of your Sega contacts? Love your channel...starting watching years ago cause of the SMS coverage. I had most of the games on your list...would love to play some of the harder ones on a mini system with a rewind feature.
I played Phantasy Star 1,2 and 4 a year ago for the first time and I had a blast! Couldn't really get into 3 for whatever reason though. I love your videos Johnny. You're a treasure!
We had a C64 and I played a lot of our gaming on that Commodore monitor too! I loved Ys 1&2 on TG16CD and played through it many times so I totally understand your love for that game. Thanks for the video! PS, I just went to Save-on-Foods over the holiday weekend! It was very nice!
Master System was quite big here in the UK as well, I had both sms and nes. Have the fondest memories with the master system and still have 50 original games in my collection!
Amazing little system! I still love playing the games on mine from time to time. Lots of great games on your list. Ys is one of my favourites, too. Was never very good at it and didn’t get anywhere near to completing it. If I were to make my own list I’d have to have Space Harrier and Choplifter on there, but I’m not sure what the others would be. I’ll have to go away and think about this and maybe I’ll make a video response. Thanks for the great video.
You introduced me to wonderboy. Im playing the new one and it has the greatest thing a company could have done in a remake. A button that lifts the curtain of the new game and just to witness the classic version of it playing along in the background. How awesome is that.
Hi there! I'm new to your channel and I wanna say that you made a really cool list here, and I genuinely felt your passion for the games you talked about.
I was a nintendo boy back then but i got to say that when i see first time some of those sega master games i was blown away like golden axe, astro warrior and kenseiden, those were magical times indeed my friend
My friends sega master system had a hidden snail game where you had to move a snail through a maze of sorts. I think you booted up the system without a cartridge in it and there it was.
Some of my greatest memories as a child are playing and beating miracle warriors with my father we had the map taped on the wall next to the TV it was amazing !
I too was one of the few who had a sms growing up! Great times, great games! I’m glad Johnny gives the sms some love! Phantasy star is one of my favorites along with Alex Kidd, shinobi, double dragon, rampage, golden axe warrior, and wonder boy 3
Great list! I love me some Master System and I’m going to play through one of these games on your list list week (trying to finish up Final Fantasy now). Always love your vids and positivity
I love your Golvellius T-shirt :) Wonder Boy 3: The Dragon's Trap, Shinobi, Alex Kidd In Miracle World, Golvellius: Valley Of Doom, Golden Axe Warrior, Miracle Warriors: Seal Of The Dark Lord, Sonic The Hedgehog, Sonic The Hedgehog 2, Kenseiden, etc. The Sega Master System was awesome!
Master System was our first system. I remember me and my older brother getting it for Christmas in 1991 when I was 6 years old. We got Alex Kidd built in to the system and Sonic and it was amazing. We never got too many games like you showed here but we rented quite a few from blockbuster video. I remember Carmen Sandiego was a unique type of game we tried. It's an underrated system. It's so fun to watch other people's top SMS games. I wasn't very coloured by RPGs back then (not until like the early 2000s). My childhood games mostly consisted of Action and Adventure games (Asterix, Lucky Dime Caper, Castle of Illusion, Thunder Blade, Action Fighter and so on). Playing those RPGs you mention in this day and age... I must say it's difficult to connect with those. But watching your enthusiasm over those games really makes me want to get into them. I hope I will, especially Phantasy Star. Just a pity it's so expensive. Might go for the Switch variant until I'm hopefully lucky enough to find an SMS copy cheap.
I love these SMS reviews. I like that everyone has their favorite SMS games, it makes me reconsider my favorites. Phantasy Star is still an emotional game for me, perfection.

Did you happen to finish any of these top 10. Such great memories here. I completed alien syndrome once I got a pattern down for each level. Also miracle warriors had a map with the game. Monster land with that impossible jumping at the end. And phantasy star I got sega to send me the last dungeon directions. Such great times. I have over 50 games for it.
I grew up with the Master System. All my friends had either the NES or SNES, and we always "battled" on how Sega was better vs. Nintendo consoles. I remember arguing even on SMS vs. SNES with my neighbor. But when we forgot about the arguments, we always had a super blast when playing the SMS at my basement. My favorites were Transbot, Psycho Fox, Sonic, Asterix, the built in Alex Kidd, and Double Hawk. Oh boy, did we play Double Hawk... We would run out into the woods and play war against imaginary enemies with either plastic guns or wooden sticks after playing the game for hours on end. The SMS has so many great games, it's a pity it seems only the Genesis/Megadrive is seeing any recognition at this time.
I remember getting Golvellius when I was around 7 maybe 8. I remember trading something in for it at a local mom and pop shop called Fantasy Computers back in 1992. I instantly loved it the first time I played it.
