Yeah but I have great memory playing at the arcade, which most kids today don't experience. And I mean a real arcade, a place totally dedicated to arcades games
Yup, I liked the SNES a lot, loved the Genesis but the console I wanted that was out of reach financially was the Neo Geo. Even the NG CD was a big out of range. The SNES and Genesis probably had better overall libraries but the tech in the AES was way ahead and it would've been awesome to have a true arcade experience at home back then. At least with the Wii Virtual Console, PS4 and Switch I've caught up on some of the stuff I missed over the years. Sengoku 3 and Mark of the Wolves among my favorite.
The part that I still remember the most about owning a NeoGeo back then was how incredible the sound was and how much digitized speech there was in the games. Like in NAM-1975 and Cyber-Lip, you had vocal narration between levels. It was near CD quality as well. This predated stuff like Genesis Sports Talk 🏈/⚾️ too, and that was very low bitrate anyway. The Neo graphics were of course amazing, but it’s still the sound that got me the most back then. I still own a system today along with a modestly sized Neo•Geo AES collection and still appreciate it.
NEO-GEO was always ahead of the curve. The animation, music and atmosphere for every game had an energy all it's own. This top 10 must have been challenging, so many titles to choose from. #TheFutureIsNow forever, always
I was the only teenager probably in my whole city that actually owned a Neo Geo AES in the early 90s. I pretty much had to have one when Samurai Showdown came out. Only thing that pissed me off was that it was censored, and I had to pay a guy to install a debug bios chip to get the blood.
The bad thing about finally getting one is when you realize the games cost like $200 on average. But the upshot of that is that when you got a game, you REALLY friggin appreciated it! And these were games meant to be appreciated, many being what I consider actual works of art. Some people think "oh, arcade games, so shallow, they're all cheap so they can take your quarters". But then you realize - almost every one of these games can hypothetically be finished with just one quarter. Almost everything that seems "cheap" can be figured out and overcome. It just takes passion and time, and these were games worthy of those.
Neo Geo probably has the general highest level of quality of it's library of any system. I know it has only around 160 titles for it, but the vast majority of them are very competent games (at the very least) - with probably the only exception being Legend of Success Joe. Liked the list Johnny, I've been watching your channel since your first Neo Geo review back in the day!
Thanks for the excellent walk down memory lane! I also grew up in arcades (49 yo now) and have such fond memories of SNK Neo Geo's heyday. Samurai Showdown 2 is my top game... complete masterpiece ahead of time.
I played(and completed) Metal Slug 3 on the ps4, and I have to say that it's a great game. Good variety of enemies, weapons, and battle vehicles. One of the best Run N' Gun games!
I love Neo Geo games even though I never own one but some of my favorites include Fatal Fury, Samurai Showdown, Art of Fighting, and Metal Slug series. Thanks for the video HCG!
I used to remember we had the 6-game Neo Geo MVS machines in 1990 at our U.S. local arcades, although there weren't many of them, some limited. At the former Space Port arcade in Woodbridge, N.J. one day I will not forget this. True story. A young boy gets in line at the 6-game MVS machine ready to play say Magician Lord (one of my favorites). After waiting an hour of the crowded line, his turn finally came up, he carried the console's memory card which was able to insert in the machine and load up his current progress. So there was one of the owners amongst the huge crowd of kids saw exactly what this kid did. Guess what? He got ejected from the place and told him to never come back again. I was like WTF?! Crazy but fun times we Gen-Xers had playing these games.
I love the Neo-Geo. I first read about it in an EGM in Spring of 1990. Then I started saving up my money in preparation for it. Before buying it my brother and I used to play it in a local arcade. It was pretty amazing to think that the home games would look and sound just like the arcade versions. Anyway, my top 15 games. Most of them are based on nostalgia and the amazing times I had playing them on the AES in 1990. Also keeping in mind that there wasn't a single fighting game in sight. 01. Baseball Stars Professional 02. Nam-1975 03. Metal Slug 3 04. Cyber-Lip 05. League Bowling 06. Top Player's Golf 07. Baseball Stars 2 08. Magician Lord 09. Ninja Combat 10. Metal Slug X 11. Last Resort 12. Ghost Pilots 13. The Super Spy 14. Blazing Star 15. Riding Hero
The college I went to back in the day had a Shock Troopers 2 machine in the cafeteria that we spent a buttload of time on. I remember an outside speaker giving us a talk there, but the sound of the cabinet was so overpowering that no one could hear him until the principle stormed off to the corner and unplugged it. Good times 😂
I loved a lot of SNKs games before the Neo Geo and sadly didn't get to experience the MVS in arcades much at all, but, I did like the ports of things like Samurai Shodown & World Heroes to the 16-bit home consoles. One of my favorite Neo Geo games (other than the first Shock Troopers) has been Ghost Pilots, even though it's simple, I really like the presentation / design. Awesome video, man!
Great video, Johnny! I still have a soft spot for the early Neo Geo games, especially Magician Lord and League Bowling. I've been watching for 11 years, since the beginning, since you were the first guy talking about the stuff I liked, PC engine, Neo Geo, Capcom CPS, and 80s anime. Thanks for so many years of great content!
Just discovered your channel; I love it! I want to pick up some of these awesome games on the Switch. I'm also excited for more information on the Turbografx 16 mini, too! I owned Bust-A-Move 2 on the PS1, aka Puzzle Bobble 2 on the Neo Geo. It was one of the games that came with my PS1 when I was only 8 years old!
Love this video! I'm currently looking to download a bunch of the ACA NeoGeo games on Switch and this definitely helped. I appreciate your perspective and personal experiences.
Man you we're the one who Teached me of what NEO GEO was and how big deal it was at time and i Became loyal follower of your videos thanx to that NEO GEO ROCKS! Video and its have been 10 years already.. AND I STILL WANT NEO GEO CONSOLE!😭
Johnny Millenium. A man who's passion (and clearly STYLE) is surpassed by NO ONE! The Neo Geo Games felt like it was looking into the future. The graphics and gameplay were well beyond their years. Metal Slug and Samurai Showdown are up there for me.
I remember these games in the arcade. Don’t collect the system as it’s out of my price range. Got the kidney stick the other day and unlocked the other games. Really enjoying it. Figured I’d watch this video again. More of these please! Glad you are back on your feet!
I have a custom CMVS and a MVS multi cart, and that is as far as I can go with the Neo Geo when it comes to original Hardware. Amazing system, and incredible library of games. Great top 10 Johnny ;)
Loved this video. The neogeo fighting games have always been my favourite games, after the capcom street fighter series. They had so many great characters. But the neogeo had many other types of good games too. Like crossed swords. And Neo turf masters. Such a great arcade machine.
I am not familiar with any of these games or this system for that matter but I love watching your videos regardless because I love how passionatly you talk about games!
Neo Geo AES has a special place in my heart. I was studying high school in Singapore back in 1993 and I saved up for years to buy the system. I just could not afford it. I ended up buying the Neo Geo CD system instead. I spent so much time playing it back then. Now, I am a business man and I have recently started collecting the AES games. I try to go for the full collection, both US and Japanese releases. I have AES Ninja Master US version and it costed me around USD $19,000!!! This thing is not for everyone.
I was a spoilt child so had a Neo Geo growing up 😬 Lots of fond memories. Metal Slug series will always be #1 for me. Lots of great picks. I never played the real bout games or mark of wolves, so you’ve inspired me to check them out!
Great video. For me, the Neo Geo was almost a mystical creature. I remember walking into a laundry mat and seeing metal slug, and thinking it was so far beyond anything else that it couldn’t be real. Though I never owned any physical Neo geo game or console, now as an adult I consume just about anything I can with those magical games slapped on it. Most recently, pre-ordering the Neo Geo selection volume 1 and 2 on switch from playasia. Also, Turf Masters is one of the most perfect arcade games (golf or otherwise) to exist.
I love SNK, and the NEO GEO, but I'll never be able to afford one, so I've been thankful for the various home console, and PC ports over the years, and when a KOF comes out it's one of the game I will buy at full price day one!!
I feel like those of us who love the World Heroes series are because we played it at an arcade back in the day. =) I first played WH on an MVS at a convenience store and still play it from time to time on my Neo Geo (I've got 3 of the games on NeoCD and 1 for AES, would love to own them all someday).
I'm not a big fighting game fan and even I bought Garou: Mark of the Wolves on PS4. Amazing spritework and animations. I would also add that Windjammers is a ton of fun as well. Got my kids hooked on it and they play it regularly.
Good list! I loved playing most of these in the arcades growing up. I would've killed to have had my own AES console to play these games at home, but being a kid in a middle class family, that wasn't gonna happen. I always had to do with the watered down SNES and Sega ports. Luckly these days, we have compilations of some of the big franchises on PS2 and what not or download them individually. They may not be the authentic experience but they are a MUCH cheaper alternative.
I'd have to say Neo Geo is the best console of all time. Being able to play the identical arcade games at home, no shoddy or bad ports. Simply amazing.
I have always loved Neo Geo games(Samurai Showdown was my favorite). You should do a video on the Xbox, PlayStation, and others collections for those of us that don't have the OG hardware.
Samurai Showdown and World Heroes were staples of the local convenience store where we all gathered to play games. Though, it really picked up with Samurai Showdown 2 and World Heroes 2. For Samurai Showdown, I was an Ukyo player. For World Heroes, I mostly played Brocken and Rasputin, though I switched to Mudman and Johnny Maximum in World Heroes 2.
Best console of all time for me. Here's my top 10 in no particular order. Windjammers, Samurai Shodown 2, Baseball Stars 2, Metal Slug 3, Magician Lord World Heroes 2 Jet, King of Fighters 94/95, Alpha Mission 2, Real Bout Fatal Fury, Sengoku.
Man. I was at Mandarake in Akihabara a few days ago and saw a few neogeo games for over 2k usd. I remembered you because I know your love for neogeo. ☺️
The cool thing about pixel art - it's timeless. Many early 3D/polygonal games look terrible, even through rosy glasses, but good sprite and pixel work just remains beautiful.
I've been an avid Neo Geo gamer since these arcade machines popped up long ago and I got my 1st Gold system back in 1991. I don't believe I have a "top 10", but I would probably rank "Fatal Fury 1" and "Art of Fighting 1" as 2 of my favorites of all time. I had been playing Street Fighter II since it was fresh in the arcades, and Fatal Fury 1 not too long after that. I loved the soundtrack to Fatal Fury, the giant sprites, the story... It was just awesome. Fatal Fury was of course one of the 1st games I got for the Neo(and played the hell out of in the arcades). Similar story with Art Of Fighting. They did not have Art of Fighting in the arcades around here, but it was a birthday present I got in 1992. As with Fatal Fury, I loved the story, loved the giant sprites, etc... I spent countless hours playing that game.
The yoyos and treasure maps in Spinmaster always remind me of the Goonies, which in return makes me want to play a Neo Geo take on Goonies 2. Mermaids and all
I never had a NEO-GEO. I remember playing a lot of Fatal Fury and Samurai Showdown in the arcades though. They were always so expensive. I don't think there is a NEO-GEO game that doesn't have amazing graphics or gameplay for that matter.
I never grew up with the Neo Geo(I grew up with the super nintendo) nor owned one. But I fell in love with the Neo Geo games a few years back. These games sound good and look great for retro games. They play very well. Neo Geo fighters are my go to for fighting games besides Guilty Gear. I have spent over a $100 just buying these on my ps4. That's not mentioning older console ports. I wish I could collect for Neo Geo. Neo Geo games are making me into a retro gamer.
I introduced my brother to neo geo games properly on the xbox 360 and wii. He fucking loves metal slug, king of the monsters and he's 50/50 on king of fighters. (he isn't into competitive fighting games like I am) We had so much fun playing these games back in the day and he still goes back to some of the metal slug games.
This is why Neo Geo holds up even today and why it's so collectable, the system had the best 2d sprite work/pixel art ever
"i remember owning the Neo Geo as a kid growing up!"
-- nobody, ever
:D
I got a Neo Geo CD when I was 11
in 2012.
I was a weird kid.
Yeah but I have great memory playing at the arcade, which most kids today don't experience. And I mean a real arcade, a place totally dedicated to arcades games
Hmm well im not froms US, but i do remember seeing Metal Slug back in 1996 or 1997 in Yugoslavia, arcade machines and stuff
@@someguy43210 You are lucky mate:)
Neo Geo was the gold standard in the 90's... almost mythical.
Truly a legendary company in the gaming industry.

I played(and completed) Metal Slug 3 on the ps4, and I have to say that it's a great game. Good variety of enemies, weapons, and battle vehicles. One of the best Run N' Gun games!
Love how there are so many Neo Geo games on the Nintendo Switch Market.

I got that Neo Geo artbook for Christmas thanks to your showing of it. Love it!

As a 90's kid living in Europe, most of this stuff was totally unknown to me and my friends. It's amazing how much is easily available nowadays.

Metal slug holds a special place to me and thanks for helping me rediscover old classic one forgotten the yoyo one and shock troopers

I am so excited for the new Sam-Sho game. Also there is going to be a collection of the original Sam-Sho games on PS4 with online play too!
I am not familiar with any of these games or this system for that matter but I love watching your videos regardless because I love how passionatly you talk about games!
the best list i’ve seen in youtube. i dont need 30-60 of them
Every time I hear Neo Geo I get reminded of that great Neo Geo song...
Awesome 10 neo-geo. Games choice and also hyped for neo-geo 2&3 in 2020
In all the 41 years of my life I have never met one person who owned a NeoGeo home console.
But I knew like twenty kids who claimed to own one.
Neo Geo AES has a special place in my heart. I was studying high school in Singapore back in 1993 and I saved up for years to buy the system. I just could not afford it. What an episode the NeoGeo was and still is a pipe dream. That system is larger than life.
Good list, but I highly prefer the first shock troopers over the second.
I use to like the second more but I'm like you...in recent years I'm enjoying the first one more
Me too. The first one is 10 times better.
everyone says the first is better
The first is considerably better, no contest whatsoever
I was a spoilt child so had a Neo Geo growing up 😬
Lots of fond memories.
Metal Slug series will always be #1 for me.
Lots of great picks. I never played the real bout games or mark of wolves, so you’ve inspired me to check them out!

Neo Geo would be a tough one to pick 10! Nice list HappyConsoleGamer!

You are so intense and personal. Great channel
Yeah it’s nice that these days u can get most of these games on PS4/switch/Xbox one.
Best SNK game is Last Blade 2. Love your channel.
Awesome video. Love your passion!
Neo Geo was in my opinion the greatest of its era as far as fun arcade style games. They were just pumping out hit after hit game
I'd have to say Neo Geo is the best console of all time. Being able to play the identical arcade games at home, no shoddy or bad ports. Simply amazing.
The last art of fighting had the best Neo Geo animation in my opinion
I have always loved Neo Geo games(Samurai Showdown was my favorite). You should do a video on the Xbox, PlayStation, and others collections for those of us that don't have the OG hardware.
Why does everyone seem to have 2 ads at the beginning of there vids lately it's pissing me off
yeah they've gotten pretty aggressive, more and more are unskippable too
J Lea Just an aggressive ploy to force you to buy RUclips premium or whatever it is. Not going to lie, it’s starting to wear me down.
So they can get paid...duh
You know how I know Johnny has good taste? He put MOTW on the top of the list and Real Bout 2 second.
You are darn right
Awww....No love for King of the Monsters, a great follow up to Rampage even though it wasn't related to it.
Here in france we refered to it as the "rolls royce console".
Get the MVS to AES converter for some of the more expensive AES games! You can even purchase the shockboxes and labels for them too.
Samurai Showdown and World Heroes were staples of the local convenience store where we all gathered to play games. Though, it really picked up with Samurai Showdown 2 and World Heroes 2. World Heroes 2 Jet, King of Fighters 94/95, Alpha Mission 2, Real Bout Fatal Fury, Sengoku.
Awesome Video Johnny. Just wish you would have put a list of the Games Below.
awesome vid! u entertaining AF! thanks!
Awesome list Johnny! The only way to get Neo Geo was to get the sloppy seconds, otherwise the system and games were impossible to get.

The cool thing about pixel art - it's timeless. Many early 3D/polygonal games look terrible, even through rosy glasses, but good sprite and pixel work just remains beautiful.
World Heroes was the first Neo Geo game I experienced in the arcade. Was at a bowling alley when I was around 10

Neo Drift Out, Neo Geo Turf Masters and Ninja Commando are some of my favourites. I really want to get a copy of NAM-1975 on MVS.

I love that you have so many vivid memories of games you played in the 80s and 90s.
spin masters was new to me, about to play that now -- thanks
I introduced my brother to neo geo games properly on the xbox 360 and wii.
He fucking loves metal slug, king of the monsters and he's 50/50 on king of fighters. (he isn't into competitive fighting games like I am)
We had so much fun playing these games back in the day and he still goes back to some of the metal slug games.
I really love Twinkle Star Sprites from them. So unique
Magical Drop 3 is my favorite Neo Geo game.
To me Mark Of The Wolves is the greatest 2D fighter of all time.
So looking forward to the new Samurai Showdown :)
Awesome review
