  • Often dismissed, the 3DO had the unfortunate position of being released right before the Saturn and Playstation. That meant that it was almost immediately forgotten by the masses, but for those of us that took the trip, it was a hell of ride while it lasted.

    Episode Notes:
    1. Captured on real hardware via s-video.
    2. There is a port of Return Fire for the Saturn. It was never officially released, but it's out there if you are curious.
    3. Killing Time was to be released for the Saturn and Playstation, but it never happened.
    4. While vastly superior in performance, the PC version of Road Rash has some weird issues. The race music itself is terrible, and the sky isn't animated at all.
    5. The soundtrack from the 3DO version of Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo is from the FM Towns version. It's my favorite music from any of the games in that line.
    6. Believe it or not the 3DO got a bunch of price drops during its life. It wasn't always crazy expensive. By the time the Saturn and Playstation got going, it was down to $199 and had a killer lineup of games. It was just outshined by hardware hyped to be way more powerful.
    7. Games that just missed the top 10 for me are Alone in the Dark, D, and Shockwave.

I loved my 3DO - bought it in the fall of 1994 when the price dropped to $399. There was a very brief window where there was some developing momentum but Sony really took the wind out of their sails (and sales) with their marketing muscle and lower priced console. Road Rash sold me on it.

Man, the 3DO never EVER gets the appreciation it deserves. For a console released in 1993, nothing else even came close to the raw power of the 3DO. Unfortunately, being an early CD based console, it was plagued with plenty of FMV trash games, but just underneath all that crust were games that truly deserve more love and attention nowadays. I often see people lump it together with the CDI, and that has to be the biggest disservice to a console I have ever seen.

3DO had a lot of FMV games, and edutainment and "multimedia" and lots of various crap no one wanted. As well as a fair amount of just truly bad games, given the low licensing fees. But it also had a bunch of excellent ports and original titles. There was a fair amount of crap to sort through, though.

Bah, is a crappy overpriced Console. It's gex in no5, for the love of God. In ps1, it isn't even in the top 150. If you get it for five bucks, you could play some good games. But if you bought it back at his time, and you weren't a rich guy, oh boy, you were fucked.

Aside from price, the other aspect which kept systems like the 3DO out of my house was a lack of local retailers that sold it. Even if I wanted to purchase a 3DO when it was on store shelves, there was not a store in my town that sold the 3DO or it's games. It was this way with every obscure video game console in my hometown. TG-16, Atari Jaguar, 3DO, CD-I, it was around a 4 hour drive to get to the closest retailer that sold any of them.

NFS was literally jaw dropping. 3DO was also the only way to even play SSF2T at home in the US until it was released again in 1997 on the Street Fighter Collection disc. So nice to see some love for this forgotten but underrated console. Not all with the 3DO was perfect, but what we got here was honestly still pretty good. I'm still trying to add Killing Time to my collection, but I have gotten some fun out of Escape from Monster Manor which came first. It's not nearly as story driven and a bit more repetitive, but I really like the spooky/Halloween cheesy vibe I get from it. I also firmly stand by my opinion that Need for Speed on the 3DO was much better than the versions that came to the PS1 and Saturn. It was more realistic and the other versions were missing the one thing that made Need for Speed cool and that was Mr.X. The PS1 and Saturn versions became too arcade-like in gameplay and were quickly overshadowed by the far superior Ridge Racer titles + Gran Turismo on PS1 and Daytona USA + Sega Rally on the Saturn.

I only had one friend back in the ol' high school days who had a 3DO. He specifically got it to play Super Street Fighter II and we were in total awe when we first played it. But none of us could justify the price for the console in those days and I think around that time we were still holding out hope for the SNES CD-ROM. But dude you are bang on right, when we played Road Rash, it was instantaneously addictive as hell. I had so much fun spending countless hours playing it, even once winning a race by having my rider take a wipe out mid air and crossing the finish line, hahahaha So many funny bugs in that game.
Great video!! Would looooove to acquire a 3DO but they have shot up in value like effing crazy these last few years. It's the only way to play Road Rash in my opinion.

This is a great retrospective that hit all the main points of what made the 3DO such a great gaming console. I never owned one, but I remember trading one of my friends some Super Nintendo games so that I could borrow his 3DO to play games like Road Rash and Super Street Fighter 2 for the weekend. These games were miles ahead of anything that was out on any mainstream console at the time. Considering that the 3DO was creating games like these when the 16-bit SNES was at the height of its popularity is impressive. Timing really is everything, but if the 3DO wasn’t so expensive we might have a different dominant gaming company today.

Yeah the 3DO is for sure underrated and underappreciated. I got mine in 1998 at a local retro game store for $39 plus tax and it included one original controller and the rca composite cable. (And obviously the power cable was hardwired into the system) Over the years I have gotten games for it. I have the FZ10 model that is the front loader. The most common one, but I think the best designed model overall. Also so glad you put Road Rash at #1. To this day, I still love to break out that game and go back in time! Here is a list of games I enjoy. And also I own most complete in box.
Road Rash, Need For Speed, Gex, BladeForce, Demolition Man, Wing Commander, Rebel Assault, Shock Wave, Crash 'N Burn, Return Fire, Madden Football and many more. There are also more games I got this past year that I haven't played much yet. But would like too sometime here soon.

For 14:10 - Just wanna add - the L/R shoulder buttons and the start/stop button were used to make up 6 buttons. Very playable even on a original 3DO pad, but agree, the 6 button pads (& there were a few) were the best! Even had an arcade joystick block if I remember correctly, plus an adapter to allow snes pads to be used (which was pretty strange back then, but amazing)! Anyway, really like your videos! Keep them up, champ!

3DO was ahead of it's time. Yes, it had a heavy price tag but the games looked so much better than anything else at the time of release. Thanks again for the 3DO love, it is well deserved and needed. My favorite games on the system that I still return to from time to time are Road Rash, Need For Speed, Slam N Jam 95, and Twisted. I enjoyed John Madden, Battle Chess, Crime Patrol, Super Street Fighter II Turbo, and Myst as well on the system. I had Alone in the Dark, Out Of This World, Samurai Showdown, Way of the Warrior, Primal Rage, Mad Dog McCree games, Hell, etc. but didn't play those as frequently. I didn't get Gex until much later but wish I had as a kid as I know I would have logged some hours on that game. I didn't have Return Fire but that game looks great.

While I was never able to own a 3DO, I was always vastly intrigued by it. I got to play it /maybe/ once or twice thanks to a demo kiosk in a department store but due to its price it was always a no-go for me. It tends to get a lot of flack from other channels for the games that flopped on it but over time I've come to see how experimental and, as you've pointed out here, ahead of its time it was. Really awesome to see it in a light like this. What an exciting time this was for consoles overall. Thanks for another insightful and kickass video!

I remember back in the day, I had the Genesis and enjoyed playing Another World (UK version). I saw the 3DO version in a gamer mag and I salivated over the quality of the graphics compared to the 16 bit. I could never afford one back then; my first 32 bit console was the Playstation. The thing is however, I disliked the “jaggies” on the 3D polygon environments - this didn’t seem to occur on the 3DO.

In the UK, I remember the 3DO being even more of a non-entity than it appears to have been in the USA. Huge price, barely any marketing, and almost zero presence in game stores. I barely know anything about it, but I'd be keen to pick one up for the handful of decent exclusives, and just general collectability of it. For games like Gex, Road Rash, Need for Speed, Street Fighter, Neo Geo ports etc, I'd be inclined to stick with the Saturn versions now, though I can see the appeal of the 3DO versions at the time of their release.

I was just a kid in the early 90s. But now I am quite interested in the machine and want to add it to my collection if I am fortunate enough to find a console at a reasonable price. It has some interesting games that make it worth owning and it is also a neat piece of Hardware historically.

Most of the games on this list I never got a chance to play, but the ones I did play very much deserve to be on this list. I never had enough games on the system to make a top ten list, but I loved the hell out of my 3DO until Final Fantasy 7 gave me a reason to move on. My favorites in no particular order are:
Doom -- I know it isn't the best version, but it was the version I grew up with, and I never knew what I was missing. I spent many a night blowing up demons with this one.
Samurai Showdown -- Epic game. You nailed it here in the video
Gex -- Definitely a good game. Not amazing, but fun enough that I beat the thing a few times. I never thought it was all that hard since it kept burying me in extra lives.
Return Fire -- Nailed it again in the video. Absolutely fantastic game, and I loved the expansion pack, too.
Star Control II -- I loved the first game on Genesis, and the sequel was even better. The voice acting is great, and the humor is spot on, as is the gameplay. Also, I believe this remains the only console port of the game, making it one of the few games worth picking up for 3DO to this day.
Space Hulk -- Good god, this game is tough as nails, but something about it kept me coming back. I never beat it, and I doubt I ever will, but I was addicted to it once upon a time.
Captain Quasar -- Probably my favorite game on the system. Awesome run n' gun adventure with a lot of exuberant humor and destructible environments. That opening movie alone is worth checking out. Its only other release was on PC back in the '90s, so it's also one of the few games that is worth tracking down on 3DO today.
The Horde -- I only ever played the demo of this game, but I played the hell out of it. I always wanted to get it, but my older brother thought it was dumb, so i kept my love for it secret.

Some 3do games were jaw dropping at the time. It was unbelievable to have this graphics and sound at home. I will never forget how awesome it was to experience street fighter, way of the warrior, samurai showdown, roadrush at home in my friends house. CD quality sound, so colorful, big freaking full motion videos, 3d graphics in some game. WOW. Going back home to my Mega Drive and looking at the graphics it offered. It was... disappointing a bit. Like seeing Neo Geo AES at the gaming store. Jaw dropping. I agree about Road Rush as best game on the platform.

    • @SkyScourgeGod
      @SkyScourgeGod 3 года назад

Star Control 2 is pretty cool, definitely top tier 3DO material. Lucienne's Quest was also good, but the problem was that it's the only English translated version out there and it's only on 3DO, a console that was already a rare commodity to find in consumers houses due to its price. This makes Lucienne's Quest ludicrously rare and expensive these days. It was also on Saturn re-titled Sword and Sorcery, but alas it remains exclusive to Japan with no official translation. :(

one thing easy to neglect today is that time game of a couple of years of a game being released on a console then another. Road Rash was a delicious masterpiece on the 3DO hands down, though it simply did not feel the same on ps1 because of that time difference.
Had an absolute blast playing Street Fighter there too, even with the sketchy 3 buttons controller (I think you could map them). It was a clean arcade port and I was deep into the franchise back in the day
I did not own a 3DO but my neighbor had one. We had a lot of fun playing Xtreme games which would easy be part of my top10 for the platform. We played together there at least once a week until we got a bit older and had some issues fighting for girls
