I've visited this magnificent estate numerous times and even operated the organ (I'm an organist). Everything in the mansion is in pristine condition. There often is a very large and wonderful craft fair on the adjoining grounds. Vermont is a beautiful state and this area is magnificent. I am lucky to have lived in NY for over 60 years and less than an hour's drive to Manchester. Bennington, on the way there, is 20 minutes from my last home in Troy, NY. Thank your presenting this beautiful place.

Thank you for mentioning the craft fair! I’m sure it was cool for you to operate that organ. What a great experience. You are so right about it being a beautiful area. I liked reading a little bit about how local residents came together to care for Hildene. There’s a little bit of information on their website about that. Thanks for watching!

My ancestor William T Carroll was the supreme court clerk who was working the evening that President Lincoln arrived in DC. They wanted to swear him in that night. His belongings were still on the train. So William had a small bible in his desk given to him by his wife . He gave his bible to the judge swearing President Lincoln in.
I visited the national archives and was able to view it. I also was able to read William’s notes and a seal documenting it as the bible Lincoln was sworn in on. My husband and I will have to visit this lovely home in Vermont . Thank you for sharing .

I have some information recently learned about Abraham Lincoln. On average, every day there is a book or something
literary published about Lincoln. He shares this pretty exclusive company with Napoleon, Jesus Christ and (gulp) UFOs. The Robert Todd Lincoln estate is very similar to the Huntington Library in San Marino, California, site of the Blue Boy painting. Thanks for this posting.

She was indeed adventurous as I understand it. She wanted to experience a wide range of experiences in her life and had many hobbies. I was told that she was not “conceited” or “impressed” with the fact that she was a descendant of President Lincoln, and she was extremely welcoming to those who were fascinated with her family legacy. I think I may have mentioned in the video that she essentially had an “open door policy” while she lived at Hildene.

His last name probably didn't hurt but, that can only take a person so far. You cannot " ride" on a name forever. Robert took after his mother's side more than Abe's. He was intelligent, a hard worker, tread his own path, was pretty highly regarded here & overseas. He could be a little " prickly" at times & was rather dour, not exactly like his father. Pragmatic might be a good description.

This is such a well organized home. Given Robert's wild and loose upbringing in Springfield IL and Washington, it's clear that his time in the Army was an antidote to the chaos. Mary's husband was on the road, she had miscarriages, 4 energetic bright sons, and hostess to her husband's networking contacts.

Robert was only in the army for 2 months. His 5 years in New England are what made him into a gentleman. When he returned to Springfield in February 1861 after a year of prep school and one term at Harvard, it was well noted that he was significantly more sophisticated.
