This was in that age of games where you had zero idea what you were doing, where to go, what the objectives were. You did your best and just gave up. Platoon on the NES almost captures the essence of the movie in that war is chaotic hell.

I remember when this game was released, Entertainment Tonight did a small segment questioning the sensitivity of it. They asked a couple Vietnam vets about the game, who mostly just laughed it off.
The music is limited on this version. The Sound effects are also limited compared to other versions. Nintendo likely objected to death screams heard throughout the game on this version when someone gets hit with a bullet.
I hated this game when I was a little kid. I would just wander around the maze until I died. Never got past the opening jungle section and just seeing what came afterwards for the first time today, lol.
When we reach the ending of this game, Charlie Sheen's closing narration always comes to mind; "I think now, looking back, we did not fight the enemy. We fought ourselves. And the enemy was in us. The war is over for me now. But it will always be there, for the rest of my days. As I'm sure Elias will be, fighting with Barnes for what Rhah called possession of my soul. But be that as it may, those of us who did make it have an obligation to build again, to teach to others what we know, and to find the goodness and meaning to this life."
This game used to creep me out and made me nervous but, the graphics and music were excellent. Bought the cart from my friend (who sadly committed suicide in 2001) in back in 1990. We were fellow Army Brats who met in elementary school on Post. His name is still written on the cartridge.
I remember playing this when i was a kid around 88' or so. It looked better than most at the time. A sorely forgotten one was Predator the NES game. That was one of my top favorites
We used to skip school & break in our friend's house & play his NES all day. One time this game Platoon was there. We, for some reason, stole it. Like 20 years later I found out that his dad rented it for him & he got his azz beat by his dad for losing the game.
I had this as a kid, I think something was wrong with my copy. I could never get past level 1, and there were no enemies either. I think it was an early glitched copy of the game, I literally tried everything possible to get past that level for several years that I owned it.
This game was originally by Ocean Software. Like most computer game makers at the time, they used other companies to port games over to the NES. I admit though, while Naoki Kodaka did a great job at porting the music over to the NES, the Commodore 64 version is superior.

I'm kind of surprised at how short this game is but I guess a lot of NES games were if you knew exactly how to beat them.
I could never pass the first level. That maze all looks the same I think you would have to try to draw your own map. Surprised to see how different the other levels are.
The music on the first part is still epic! I always got destroyed in the tunnels. Made it to the Night part 2 or 3 times but was wasted in seconds. Never saw the end til just now. Seems so short when you’re good enough to just blaze through. You run out of ammo and you’re just eFFed!

I remember trading my X-Men card collection for this game. It brutally sucked ass. I kept dying over and over in the first level, until I finally quit. Later I found the kid and demanded he give me back my cards, but he'd already sold them. Fuck this game and fuck War, too.
The night part with the flares is surprisingly cool for an NES game, but I'd be pissed off if I bought this game full price just to find it was so short

The game isn't good, but it does have that "I don't know where I am, and everything is trying to kill me" vibe. Lol
What an eccentric pile of garbage... in a good way
Yep it ALMOST captures the full essence of war especially with bullets traveling at 2 mph and bodies just vanashing in thin air after been shot.
