- A playthrough of Capcom's 1988 platforming game for the NES, Bionic Commando.
Bionic Commando is a highly regarded classic on the NES, and in my view, it's also one of the strangest. Of course, that's a large part of what makes it so memorable.
You take on the role of "Ladd Spencer" (later re-translated as Rad Spencer), a heroic amputee with a mechanical arm that doubles as a grappling hook. This hook allows Ladd to latch onto anything above or on the same level as he stands. Once attached, he has a couple of options: he can reel himself in, useful for shortening jumps or climbing to a higher platform; and he can swing back and forth, which is often necessary for gaining momentum in order to launch himself across gaps. The arm allows for far more freedom than you'd get in your typical side-scrolling platformer, but it comes at a price: there is no jump button.
What is that chorus of gasps I hear? No jumping!?
The lack of a jump button might make Bionic Commando among the most difficult platformers to come to grips with, but the grappling hook allows for an entirely unique and satisfying way to get around a game world. The angle and momentum at the time that you hook on and release is key, and at the beginning, you'll find yourself regularly plummeting like a rock into hazards. With a bit of patience and gumption, though, you'll find one of the most intuitive and empowering control schemes in an NES action game. It's Bionic Commando's defining feature, and the game would lose much of its identity without it.
That's certainly not the only thing of note, though. Though there's generally a clear "next destination" you should be going for, it's not entirely linear. There is a map that allows you to choose your path, whether it be to an action stage, a neutral zone (where you'll collect most of your major items), or a sortie with the enemy troops milling about (done in the style of Commando, an older Capcom game). It's definitely a cool way of breaking things up, and it does allow for a few (very minor) puzzles to be incorporated. Certain items are needed to progress in different areas, so you might find yourself returning to a few of these stages over the course of the game. Kind of like Strider, though I'd argue that the NES version of Bionic Commando is significantly more polished than Strider was.
And of course, we can't forget one of the game's hallmarks - it's presentation. The story was altered for censorship purposes when brought to America, but it's clear what was originally there. Representatives of a Neo-Nazi nation have begun to develop WMDs, and resistance-member Super Joe (the guy you played in Commando) has been captured in his attempt to infiltrate the organization. Ladd regularly has to tap into enemy communications - always accompanied with some hilarious Engrish and derpy portraits - to figure out what's going on. These scenes look great and make the story (no matter how ridiculous it might be) pretty engaging. But - the real kicker that nobody expected by in the late 80s - is the way the final boss meets his demise.
Since the original Japanese game's name translates to English as "Hitler's Resurrection: Top Secret," his identity isn't really a surprise, but the "OMG holy Jesus WTF was that?" level of gore when the dictator meets his demise is magnificent. It also makes one wonder how the hell that ever made it through Nintendo's review board. I mean, Maniac Mansion had to be censored so you couldn't microwave the hamster, but Bionic Commando allows this?
That scene is at 1:08:17 if you'd like to see it.
Bionic Commando is an amazing game, and one of Capcom's best on Nintendo's 8-bit system. If you find yourself hankering for a unique take on the modern platformer, Bionic Commando is a great go-to.
That is, unless you have the Game Boy version, which really improved on the NES game in just about every way possible. But then, the Game Boy version is nearly four years newer, so I guess that's not a huge surprise.

It might have a fairly steep learning curve, but Bionic Commando is one of the most satisfying action games on the NES. You're really missing out if you bail before giving it a proper chance.
And this time, the bionic arm has no relation to Rad Spencer other than being his artificial limb. ;-)
I remember this game frustrating me to no end as a kid. Thanks for sharing, and bringing back memories!
@@thecowboy2 I simultaneously want to play AND avoid that reboot.
Criminal that this was left off the NES Classic.
Biggest issue with this game is, no jump.
One of the few NES games I would play over and over again.
Man great childhood memories. I loved and 30 plus years later still love this game. Many hours as a kid
This was my absolutely favorite NES game of all-time. The first time beating it was like an event for me, my dad, and cousin.
And can we take a moment to admire the stellar soundtrack as well??
Bionic Commando has a real “mystique” to it. It fascinated me as a kid, almost as much as Zelda and Metroid did. It’s on that level in my eyes. Maybe I’m alone, but I feel that it is one of Capcom’s all-time masterpieces.
I totally agree with you
@@langontherealist Thanks, I appreciate it!
The gameplay itself is of course great, but I think the "mystique" you speak of comes from the music. Something about it is just spot on. Definitely in my top 10 games of all time, probably top 5 in all honesty.
Couldn’t agree more, I always wondered why this game wasn’t more popular. I remember telling other kids about it and most hadn’t heard of the game. The music is definitely a favorite of the nes era as well.
When i played it as a small child, it was almost abit scary and feverish. But still so mrsmerizing. Yes the music made all the diffrence, these sounds are pure nostalgy.
1:08:30 - When my friend and I saw this for the first time when we beat it, I remember we thought it was the greatest thing we had ever seen in a video game at the time. We were talking about this ending for quite a while after we beat it, let me tell you.
My 6 year old buddy tried to explain what he saw when his dad beat it. I didn't believe him until years later when I beat it. I was like, holy crap, he wasn't kidding
I beat this game when I was 18 years old. I needed a pen and paper.
I'm 50 now. 😆
I still need the pen and paper.
i was 11 when i got this back in the christmas of 89 and beat it. now im 42 1/2
When I can't poop, I watch either the first sector or 5th sector of this game. Works like a charm.
Awesome. It's a cool game! Don't worry, Joe, your legend will be passed down and remembered throughout the generations, from 2010, and even now in 2018! XD
Yep and it’s not the joe from game sack haha, but it’s mind blowing how a game from 1988 looked forward to 8-2 2010 ,22 years ahead of it’s time when 2010 was the future, now we’re almost 10 years passed away from 2010 into 2020, it’s shocking how time passes by.
2024 and the legend of Joe still lives on
All hail the legendary Junko Tamiya, the music composer for this Capcom classic, who also composed the music in Strider, and the Subway level music in Final Fight!
That Subway music is kick ass
Took me 3 years to get into this game and 6 months to actually beat it! Holds a special place in my heart!
14 years old when this came out, I thought the power arm instead of jumping was the coolest thing ever in a game.
I remember how surprised I was when I first got to the part where Hitler's head explodes. I thought "Did I really just see that happen in a Nintendo game?"
Bionic Commando is one of the greatest video games of all time. Fun, challenging, great soundtrack, great ending if you can actually beat it, and so much depth for a game of its era.
I remember being 12 years old and my friend and I made it out mission to beat this game. He told me about the helicopter at the end and said it was impossible to get past. Well we combined our efforts, each played our strongest levels, and I got past the helicopter, after he took on the Albatross. Then it was a very nervey escape but finally did it and it was one of the most satisfying gaming moments ever.
I remember getting this for Christmas in 1988. One on the best games I ever played on NES.
I got it in 198X 😂
This game blew my mind, I was so satisfyed when I finally managed to complete it. Amazing walkthrough bro, thanks!
"THIS BASE WILL *EXPLOD* IN 60 SECONDS"
And then he say’s “ no don’t leave yet just wait a little longer” ahaha.
01:06:56 "I'll show you the horror of the albatross"...... flies innocuously forwards and backwards
"Get the heck out of here, you nerd!"
Accurate depiction of a neo-nazi.
Shooting Not-Hitler through the cockpit window was a defining moment of my late-blooming retro career.
Also, I think the gore made it past NOA because the damn game was too hard for them to beat. 🤣
Lol.....Without a doubt my man
I got my first ever deathless Bionic Commando run tonight! It feels amazing!
I would say level 6 was one of the most Troublesome levels playing. Especially when you had to use the arm the time it just right for those high jumps to connect to the lights
Yes! Finally! Been waiting on this one since I found your channel. This game was an absolute favorite as a kid. I played it over and over. Loved blowing up resurrected Hitler.
This game can compete with a lot of games today
To this day, Bionic Commando and the Wolfenstein franchise are the only two ways a gamer can kill Hitler that I know of.
Sniper Elite.
I cannot guess how many times I beat this game. This was one of my favorite games to play over summer vacation as a kid.
Couldn't even get past the first area when I tried this as a kid. Watching now, it's shocking how it sounds like Mega Man 1/Rockman 1's twin.
Great memories! This was the first NES game that I bought with my own money when I was a kid and I still have it to this day.
That minor-key, military-cadence-style overworld music is a small masterpiece. It starts off perilous and angst-ridden, and ends almost triumphant. As a kid it stuck with me for a long time.
I remember playing this as a kid! That game was HARD! I couldn’t even get pass some of the areas due to the no jumping & also hard enemies too!
As a kid I traded this game from a guy for some game I had beaten a dozen times. Had no idea what it was so it was a gamble but he promised it was good. And damn was he right. In the end it became one of my all time favorites of the era.
A very underrated game. I enjoyed it as a kid.
One of few video games in the entirely of my lifetime to keep me on the edge of my seat through an entire playthough!!
Really makes you feel like a member of special units soldier of some sort, single-handedly infiltrating enemy base and operations to carry out yer orders!! So Exciting!! > w
I'm glad you enjoyed it so much. It really is a fantastic game. You should check out the GB one - it's even better.
Possibly the greatest gaming experience of my life
This game brings back so many memories. I remember my brother and I playing this game for hours
I did a school project in the 6th grade on inventing the bionic arm...good times! 😅
Most under rated NES game of all time.
Absolute classic. I beat this game on Thanksgiving 1989. It took me a while.
I beat it on 2010.8.2
Joe
the best video game of my whole life, it's like megaman, only with the order of controls changed, the same damn thing and that's what I like, The two games are balanced if you look closely
Oh man, I give you all the props in the world for finishing the game! Rock on!
I played the Arcade one on the Stadium Collection,
This looks a HUNDRED times better! I particularly love how there's an actual team helping you both offscreen and on
Wow - thank you! Great to watch for the awesome memories
I loved alot of NES games, but Bionic Commando ranks near the top as one of the best.
Ah, good old Bionic Commando. This is the one I really missed out on here in Europe... played it very, very late all things considered, but it certainly is a classic. Also, the Hit... sorry, Master D's exploding head scene is only rivaled by a certain scene from Sweet Home, as far as NES games go! By the way, not many NES games have grappling hooks, do they?
It’s amezing that the exploding head from hitler scene slipped away under the radar from nintendo, ahaha.
Harder than it looks. I was five playing this so I sucked but man watching this brings back so many memories
One of my favorite games when I was 7 in 1990.
Thought this game was sooooo cool and fun as a kid. Loved it.
Goated music. Love Area 5!
Woah ! Nice played and great trick in 13:46 ... I didn't know how to cross that part
Thanks! It seems like I'm still finding new things everytime I play, no matter how many years it has been since I beat it for the first time :) There's a lot to it for how simple it is.
@@NintendoComplete - Yeah, I think the same, the game looks simple but is very elaborated for that time. Great work! hard to see that nowadays...
33 years later and never new you could do that wall skip👍
One of my favorite video games of all time!!!
Such fine gameplay, my head is about to explod.
A completelly different adventure to its arcade game of the same name (1987), Capcom's arcade platformer, Bionic Commando from 1988, is considered one fo the most memorable 3rd-party NES titles.
I wonder how many people are aware of this being an indirect sequel to the top-down shooter Commando.
I am
What a difficult & spectacular geme!! remb. 1990
My favorite NES game.
If you can master the mechanics of this game, damn near any and all platformer shooters are a cakewalk!
Area 5 is one of my favorite songs. :)
This game was so tough
I found this game impossibly hard as a child
Remember renting this one. A unique game.
Holy crap. 13:47. I've been playing this game for 30 years and I never knew you could do that, or talk to the guy afterwards.
I got chills as a kid14:15 playing this over and over winning every time
Loved this game as a kid
You darn fool! :D I was surprised to see that line in a NES game back then..
Also by the way... the ending of this game with the date signed... is actually my birthday hahaha. Another surprise for me personaly
Hanferd That's pretty awesome
My all time favorite NES game
My favourite nes game.I think i might play it tonight.
Still a masterpiece!
I'm 42 an I played this when I was 9 everyday after school!
Kind of surprised we didn't see this one before.
forgot how good this game was!!!! Though as a 7 year old i never made it very far
Greetings fabulous Earthlings! 👋👽 I bring thin crust pizza 4 everyone. Enjoy! 🍕 By the way this was such a fun game I just never managed to finish it 😲
Thank you for putting this into practice.
Damn the memories ❤
Got this today :)) reliving the memories
You make it look easy!
I couldn't figure this game out til high-school ahahaha good times
One of the best games ever! 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Finish this game when I was 8 years old 😢!
Man, i love this game, wish they would make another- oh nooooooo…
I always like to watch a play through after completing a game to see how people do it differently. I never did get that machine gun and I don't know why I ended up taking the three way to the last level. Made it so much harder than it needed to be.
I did cheat and Googled level 8 because I was convinced I was looking for someone with a door code. I could have sworn I went into both rooms and the boss' door was shut but perhaps I died between discovering each room/returning to the boss' door. I used to absolutely refuse to seek help but some old games have really obtuse/arbitrary requirements to proceed and I don't like wasting my time when the answer might be nonsensical.
On the other hand, I didn't use save states, turbo-fire or anything else that could be considered cheating and I got through it in four or five play sessions, so I don't feel too bad.
Best weapon to use was the bazooka. Once you obtained it in the early levels, just keep using through the rest of the game.
Recalls... Back then you could finish a game in one sitting on a saturday's afternoon... and continue playing another one... nowadays you need 3 months or more to finish a game
I would love to see them make a more modern version of this title like what they've done with Metroid dread and other games.
They made a version for the switch but it blows. Seems like it is for five year olds. Crapcom can do better. The old one is better than the new one
They made one for playstation/Xbox as well, not sure if is the same as the one for the Switch. At first I really liked it, but got sick of it after the first few levels and never did finish it.
They did almost exactly that in the late 2000s, man. There was even a terrible sequel that added a jump button.
@@StAnger561to770 There's a Bionic Commando on Switch? You couldn't possibly mean the original arcade game on the Capcom arcade collection.
@@bigduke5902 I don't remember the arcade version the first one I remember was on the original Nintendo system and the one on the switch is not that. Switch version seems sort of like a remake but it wasn't good from what I could see. I mean not a modern remake it was sort of like an updated old version of the original if that makes sense
This game was a blast once you mastered the bionic swing arm thingie
Ah the cold war on nes....what memories.
Top 5 NES games 🎉
Thats the united farm workers logo on the flag. They fell apart in 1986. This game came out in 1988
Before Wolfenstein we had this.
Capcom games had the best music.
My favorite game on the *NES*
23:00 ODD ..i remeber playing this game and the "water blobs" were Red ...i must have gotten a bugged version or something still great game from my childhood thanks for uploading ..it reminds me of happy times with my grandparents ..may they rest :)
Edit: ok this might be a bad joke but just look at it with some humor but 1:06:25 Hitler was a Sith lord?
One my favorites on the NES.
The logo for this game looks cool
Bionic Commando was one of those iconic video games that were released in my youth that, despite its critical acclaim, I've never got around to playing. To be fair, I really wasn't into escapist, military-themed action video games beyond Konami's Contra series back then. I will say that I loved the Genesis/Mega Drive port of Mercs (aka Senjou No Ookami 2, or Wolf of the Battlefield 2 in literal English), the sequel to Commando (not to be confused with the 1985 Arnold Schwarzenegger action movie of the same name), which is the spinoff to this game. The biggest concern that would have turned me off to this game back then was the lack of a jumping option. I might play the original arcade version that I have on one of those Capcom Classic Collection games on the PlayStation 2 in the near future. Also, based on the general art style, soundtrack, and sound effects of the NES port of BC, I wouldn't be surprised if it was in the development at the same time as the NES version of Strider, if not had some of the same staff working on both games. Anyway, great playthrough. It was nearly flawless.
Best NES game ever.
This Game In Japanese Version Is Stories About Hitler
This one might as well be. They didn't do a very good job of disguising it :)
Wasn't it "Resurrection of Hitler"? Also there was alot of Nazi German flags in the Japanese version
Yeah we all knew who "Master-D" was, even as kids. But then, our grandparents fought in WWII so you'd see books at their house when you'd go over for Thanksgiving and such.
@ScopeDog Val Kilmet with Carrot Top hairstyle...
The game title of the famicom is Hitler no fukkatsu - top secret
Loved this game
Ahead of its time.
So that's how you get the orange communicator without firing your weapon!
The Gatling Pea is a Bionic Commando from North America by Capcom America Corporation in December 1988.
Super Joe is Bionic Commando’s toon soldier hero from Bionic Commando series franchise. Super Joe said: I’m here!”
Razy Jones says: You heardy listen to me. I blame you!
This game was hard
Awesome awesome fun game 🎮
