  • My honest review of this lens, outlining usage cases where f/1.4 is really needed as well as cases where an f/2.8 aperture would suffice.

    Just pulled the trigger on this lens, and this review certainly helped my decision!

    When considering to purchase the PL 12mm f/1.4, I found the price so high. I ended up buying the PL 15mm f/1.7. I listed my 12-35mm Mk II f/2.8 lens for sale. Someone offered to trade his PL 12mm for my 12-35mm (going backpacking in Asia for a month and he wanted to be as light as possible). I find the PL 15mm sharper than the PL 12mm. I use the PL 15mm most of the time but will take my PL 12mm when shooting at night or low-light situations. Although, cranking up ISO from 200 to say 400 is no big issue, I always prefer to leave it at ISO 200 if possible. I shoot pictures and videos on my outings, so the f/1.4 definitely helps. I prefer the weight of the PL 15mm when video recording on gimbal. My usage scenario is part of what you cover in your video.

      Thank you for your honest review. I love how you compared the 12mm 1.4 to 12mm -60 2.8 lens. Very helpful video!

      Yeah the 15mm a killer lens for sure.

      @@crazykenbei This past week, I took the opportunity to get out with my PL 12mm lens visiting hiking trails. It's been a struggle with Covid-19. There is something about the PL 12mm that is endearing, especially for landscape and nature shots. It seems to capture colors with micro contrast better than the PL 15mm. It's not always about sharpness, even though I like that.

      Just got 12mm for half the actual price. I am happy with the price I got. Buy when I read your comment, I am starting to doubt my decision 🙄 since I can get 2 PL 15mm for the money I spent.

    • @davidsyw1
      @davidsyw1 3 года назад

      @@paksidewandaru1719 I tried to sell my PL 12mm but could not get the price I was seeking, so decided to just keep it. It is good to have 12mm FOV for the extra width if 15mm is too tight. The PL 12mm renders very attractive colors (contrast) in my experience and works well for things like landscape shots where getting the ultimate sharpness is not as important. Sometimes we get too wrapped up in our decisions. Enjoy the PL 12mm how you may. If money permits, get the PL 15mm (just one of them) and compare. You can always sell one or the other if you are ultimately not happy. ( 📷 ‿ 📷 )

    Thanks for another great review. I still have a G7 and GX85 and it's cool to still see others still using this system. So many have jumped to the A7III. I can't afford it so I still use M43. No regrets. Hey, I noticed you just got the Nocticron 42.5mm 1.2. There is a great comparison between that and the 45mm 1.2. Look at the bokeh comparison. For informational curiosity if you are interested, look at the 4k comparison of the 2 lenses. RUclips search for "Olympus 45mm 1.2 Pro VS Panasonic Leica DG Nocticron 42.5mm 1.2 - RED35 Comparison".

      I'd like to do a video comparing the 42.5mm f/1.7 Lumix to the 42.5mm f/1.2 Leica since I currently have both.

      @@derekaggs11 It turned out, I've watched (and liked) already. Watching camera videos hours everyday, I can't keep track of what I have watched. :)
      Anyways, I just watched again.
      That's the lens on top of my list. Owning 25mm f1.2 and 75mm f1.8, I'm a bit struggling to justify getting 42.5mm. I know it's not overlapping with those lenses, but I'm not planning to own all the prime lenses neither. Maybe I will consider selling 75mm as it's the least used, but that's the lens brought me to m43, so I'm attached to it. Anyways, that's my side of a short story.
      And, I've been already following your instagram. :)

    Good review.....can you make a video on how to shoot the milky way with a MFT camera?

    Thanks for the review. Took awhile to find it. Do you think there be mouch difference between 12mm 1.4 vs 15mm 1.7 for low light?
    I currently own the 15mm but require more light avoiding extra equipment.

    Have you looked at the Sigma 16mm f1.4? It would just be a redundancy for you now, but it is also a reasonably priced lens and from my use, pretty good. Also, just requested to add you on Instagram😁

    Living in San Francisco, I haven't seen many stars, much less the milky way for decades, sure do miss that. Astro-photography for when the stars align --that was funny. Great review with many useful data points to mull! Here's another: I've had at least 5 cameras stolen during my lifetime, plus accidents do happen, so if you favor expensive equipment then I highly recommend insurance coverage! Just curious, in the walking clip to the car I hear some clicking; is that IBIS noise? For what you do, thank you, thank you!

    • @derekaggs11
      @derekaggs11  6 лет назад

      Thanks for the comment! At least you have a plethora of other sights to see in SF, plus some nice dark skies to the East. I remember seeing some very nice stars when I hiked Half Dome a at Yosemite a few years back. I haven't noticed any IBIS clicking with the G9, nor my G85 (It was *very* loud on my K-5IIs), but I'll take a look again. It could be any number of things in that particular clip.

    • @derekaggs11
      @derekaggs11  6 лет назад

      Rick Mears I listened to the noise again and I think it’s the neck strap rings jiggling in their eyelets as I walk.

    Thanks for the review. Nice to see you go all in with M43 with those high end lenses. The AF on the G9 still needs some tweaking though :-). As a G85 owner I'm in the same position as you were: upgrade to G9 or go FF? How is the G9 compared to G85? The shadows in the RAW files of the G85 can be quite muddy. Has this improved with the G9? How is the DR for landscapes? Eagerly awaiting your G9 review !

    • @derekaggs11
      @derekaggs11  6 лет назад

      Jozman Thanks for the comment! DR has improved a bit, but I’m seeing a bigger improvement in color output with the G9. Also, having the option to take 80 MP stills from a tripod is lots of fun. The price on the G9 has tanked since it launched. Check around and you might be able to find one for around $1300 or so.
      I’m going to start planning out my G9 review! I want to give proper attention to all of its features and quirks.
