  • I've been working with the Panasonic 12mm 1.4 Leica Summilux for a few weeks now and wanted to share some images and video footage from this lens. Not only is it incredible, but its making me thing very differently about micro 4/3 in general. This thing is amazing.

    one of my faves, never leaves my bag! The price is steep but it does carry the Leica Summilux badge, and it's definitely worth every penny like all the Pana/Leica lenses.

    Your comment about the focus by wire is very relevant Ted, some are better than others though. I own and reviewed the Panasonic 25mm 1.7 and the manual focus speed actually changes based on how fast you turn the ring and it makes it all but impossible to reliably rack focus repeatably. I think thats one reason fully manual lenses will always be in demand for certain situations. by the way I like how youre not chained to one brand or system. respect

    Good review, I have the 1-4 25mm Summilux and that is an impressive lens used on my G80/85 but of course with MFT the crop factor is an issue at the wide end so it was great to hear your take on this 12mm. Love your work, all the best.

      I usually combo the leica 25 with the Leica 15 and the PL42.5 OIS for compact use. It's usually way enough. I do agree panasonic needs a 10 and a 100 prime :)

    You can DIY a stabilizer for this set-up with a tennis ball, a 1 ounce steel ball bearing, a washer with a 1/4 in hole and a 1/4 nut and screw. Put together, you mount it in the tripod mount at the base of the camera. The vibrations will be washed out by the vibration of the ball bearing within the tennis ball. An added benefit is the size of the tennis ball is perfectly sized to act as a hand grip.

    Glad to see you're liking the micro 4/3 systems. you should really get your hands on an Olympus em5 II or em1 II. The in body stabilization on the Olympus platform is incredible and lets you use unstabilized Panasonic lenses. I'm using an em5 II and just picked up a Panasonic Lumix 20mm f1.7. Excited to see how it performs over the Olympus 17mm.

    I have been following this channel for awhile and love the content. I own a nikon d70 and a new canon m10 and I was wondering how much of a deal does aperture make? I primarily do sports photography but occasionally do some automotive too and I was thinking about purchasing a rokinon lens whose f/2 but they also have a f/1.2 for the camera mount and I am unsure which to look to get.

      Alexander Hastings if you are doing sports I don’t think you want a shallow depth of field. Just because there’s a lot of movement and trying to keep someone in focus with a narrows field of view is only going to be difficult.

    great video - thanks - nice place you got - on the shake issue - Get the GX85 - it has fantastic IBIS - and not that much more - and not a whole lot larger - still very compact - the GX85 is a super super nice little camera - a bit heavier - but solves the image stabilization issue - has Dual IS with selected lenses - the GX850 is of course ultra small and light and amazing for its size - but the 12mm F1.4 seems awesome - I have the 25mm F1.4 and the great little 42.5 mm F1.7 and the awesome 42.5mm F1.2 - but larger and heavier but ultra sharp -
    the 25mm f1.4 seems really sharp - I am sold I will be heading of to B&H soon -

And then there's the Fujifilm 18mm (apsc?) for their system which I'm finding surprisingly great that weights nearly nothing, and is super small. Hello from Brazil, Ted! How does this combo (GX850 + SUMMILUX 12MM F/1.4) compares to the LX100 at 12mm f/1.7, not considering the slightly difference in shallow DOF? Tks!

    • @YannickKhong
      @YannickKhong 7 лет назад +1

      The lx100's venus engine is dated from the GH4 era so a little faded, a little off-colored but satisfyingly sharp. You'd be getting a significant jump in tonality, contrast and pop using the summilux 12 on a new generation Lumix like the GX850

      Yes without issue as most of the stabilization is done in body in the G9. Plus, wide angle lenses don't need as much stabilization as a regular zoom or a telephoto.

      @hannahnesbeda5162 7 лет назад

      @astheskylarksings I LOVE the 42.5, but it's big and a bit of a specialist, so for lenses that just hang out on my camera, the 25 wins. (Fortunately I have all 3 and they all fit in my go bag, so...)

    • @astheskylarksings
      @astheskylarksings 7 лет назад

      if the 42.5 is specialty then you must rarely use that 75mm, no? i have been tempted to get it, but the focal length as a prime has always been a deterrent. i only shoot primes as most m4/3 should do to get anything out of their cameras, I think. i use the panny 25 and the 42.5. i have a few more lenses that are zooms but they do not see the light of day. i want something wide, but i'm still not sure if a nice wide is up up alley. i take a lot of street action shots and portraits. the main subject are humans, so i have to get pretty close with a 12 to catch their emotions

    Panasonic Leica lenses are awesome. Don't have this one but might get it. Comparing the PL lenses to Olympus for example, they both make superb lenses. Olympus' are more clinical, superb sharpness and performance. PL lenses can often be slightly less sharp for example or have some other very minor "defect" but the rendering of the PL lenses more than make up for it, they produce so much nicer images than most Olympus lenses thanks to character AND performance.

  • @MichaelMa
    @MichaelMa 7 лет назад +14

    You should mention that it's not good for portraits because of the distortion. I own one. You have to get them dead in the center or there will be issues. I personally wouldn't say shallow DOF is the strength of this lens. Sure if you can get the subject up close, you can get a shallow DOF but you can't really do that with people's faces without avoiding distortion. So you can shoot small subjects for shallow DOF. Everything else, you have deep DOF very quickly as you move farther away from the subject. I have it on the GX85 which has IBIS, and it's my favorite lens. Another strong points of this lens is that 1.4 is razor sharp. I never need to stop down when shooting anything at medium distance and beyond unless the sun is that harsh. And also, the focusing system is silent. Unlike cheaper lenses that make noise at AFC, this lens is silent at AFC mode when continuous focus is important for rapid bursts.

    • @YannickKhong
      @YannickKhong 7 лет назад

      I'd say the lens is decent for environmental portraits but it's definitely less "portrait" strong than the tiny 15 for the same genre. It's amazing as a documentation and landscape prime though. I usually go back and forth between that one and the 15 on the g85.

    • @khronokraze
      @khronokraze 7 лет назад +1

      this is where the sensor size and crop factor play in more.. maybe why one might go towards APS-C, if not full frame.
      with the same 24mm equiv. field of view, the distortion will be less on a larger sensor since the actual focal length isn't as short, such as with APS-C.
      24mm is not the best portrait focal length, but if you want a wider shot to include more as environmental portraits, then 24mm is about as wide as one should go for that, or if you have a large group photo, also.. and I think, the 16mm f/1.4 from Fujifilm, is an example of a very nice 24mm equiv. field of view which can be used effectively as a "wide angle portrait lens"... but, it's still not a true 24mm with 24mm distortion/compression, so care in using any relatively wide angle lens should be taken with precaution to subject placement and angle to avoid or minimalize distortion, all the same.
      I'm not sure I'd personally use a 24mm equiv. field of view for street photog, either.. for me, it's a bit too wide and you really need to get that much closer to frame and compose a shot nicely.. I think 28mm is about as wide as I'd want to go in such a shooting scenario.

    • @nandoblondemobydick5438
      @nandoblondemobydick5438 5 лет назад

      a 24 mm FF equivalent is surely not a portrait lens we all Photographer know that but the image here (samples) looks very nice, if the distortion is too high that´s a big issue anyway, I will not use for portrait but if the architecture look distorted in excess, that ruins a bit the use of this lens, anyway the focus by wire ruins also my expectation, sad cause I love the look of this lens, but I can´t use it on a BMPCC 4K which work in total manual focus

    • @dainiusadomaitis309

      @@dainiusadomaitis309 Canon don´t worth what they ask for in what distortion matters and CA´s , Leica are very good at least the 35 mm Summilux. 1.4 M Mount, there are Canon special titl shift lens which are good for architecture, anyway they don´t do miracles, i worked with canon but it is not cause they are distortion free or CA´s free. it is cause their are build like tank, weather seal ... also for hobby i used Leica gear and i have a good relationship with the 35 mm 1.4 Summilux M awesome lens by far my favorite, either it is not a pro go to work lens, it is only good for doing street with not too much moving scenarios, Leica digital makes me sold all my Leica gear cause sensors and bodies are horrible and overpriced to die and chemical is too expensive even for hobby

    Great review thanks! Lots of very lovely pictures! As an aside, why don't you just hold the lens box and film with the lens? Even holding a kitten would be cool. I don't understand holding a lens you're talking about instead of using it. I thought you'd been sent a "couple of lenses" so I thought you were filming on the second copy haha. xx

    Returning to this and I must say I'm puzzled. It doesn't seem like a 12mm should be able to create this much separation even at f1.4. Must be a very special lens.

      I'd go with older manual focus lenses with adaptors, just know wide angle will be a problem with the .5 crop factor.

    Just a thought, if nowadays we use crane gimbal to record video, how is the lack of OIS of this lens still a problem? Those people who will buy this expensive lens would have the money to buy crane gimbal anyway.

      trevorpinnocky i'll stick to my 12-35mm f2.8 since I'm not too worried about bokeh at those wide focal lenghts

    • @elchavinha14
      @elchavinha14 7 лет назад

      that is sadly true haha but for the price of this prime lens you could buy the sigma 18-35mm f1.8 and a speed booster and that would give you a zoom lens at f1.2

    • @robert7622
      @robert7622 7 лет назад

      but the depth of field would still be a F2.4 FF equivalent. Just buy a FF Sigma 20mm or 24mm F1.4 and speed booster then your get real F1.4 DOF and a real focus ring. The reason this Panasonic lens is so expensive is just size. if it was a full frame it be half the price. Great if traveling but that's about it.

    • @YannickKhong
      @YannickKhong 7 лет назад

      Sure if dof is all that matters aside from superior native color/contrast transmission. Sigma lenses can't transmit those attributes much. ;)

    It may be a good lens. And I shoot on a G80/85. Still, a 1.4 lens on a M43 has the same depth of field than a f2 on an APS-C or a f/2.8 on a full frame. That is my main issue with M43. I would go even further with the excellent Panasonic cameras only IF they would go APS-C...

    Nice lens, as many of the Pany-Leica ones are.
    Micro 4/3 is a great format to use. I used Olympuses for over 4 years. But, the crop factor.. I did not have that much problem with it, but to squeeze the most amount of IQ out of m43 system, you really need the highest quality and fastest lens possible, and there is no doubt many from Panasonic & Olympus that have such offerings, but they come at a cost.. $1300 for this 12mm f/1.4, if I'm not mistaken, for example. You can certainly get excellent results with M43, but you must make that extra effort to push the lens and the m43's sensor to get the maximum potential.
    I believe in paying the high cost for the best prime lens if it's worth it, and I believe this lens and many others.. the Olympus 25mm f/1.2, Pana-Leica 42.5mm f/1.2 Nocticron, etc..
    BUT, that being said, I also like Fuji and when you look at the costs for equivalent lenses.. 16mm f/1.4, 35mm f/1.4, 56mm f/1.2... you pay $100's less.. and, you take into account the crop factor, the perceived shallow depth of field is also better an f/1.4 on APS-C is like f/2.1(or essentially f/2) vs an f/1.4 on M43 is like an F/3.8 (or essentially f/4).
    Thus, I switched back to Fuji eventually.
    If I were to have stayed with M43, I probably would have ended up with this lens and some of the other high end and pricey primes M43 has to offer as the IQ you can maximize from M43 with such lenses are amongst some of the very best.
    ... and in regards to focus by wire.. many native mirrorless lenses are designed like that.. not a fan also, and I personally find the most annoying part is sometimes the focus can be inconsistent. I think many, if not all, adjust focusing at varying rates.. and the focusing can accelerate or decelerate depending on how fast or slow you turn it.. so, it could potentially jump a focusing range if turned hard and fast enough, but maybe not adjust fast enough if turned too slow.. so, you never truly have a set point or distance to focus consistently unlike a mechanical focus ring.
    There are exceptions to the focus by wire.. some lenses that have a manual focus clutch to instantly engage manual focusing will have a fixed focus range with hard stops at infinity and minimal focus distance when engaged..even a distance/focus scale will appear.. when you have this then the focusing does not accelerate/decelerate and focus movement is reflected 1:1 with focusing distance and therefore you could focus with more consistency.

      M43 is more of a format of minimal technical commitment. The effectiveness of ibis and AF speed/accuracy on AF-S helps the camera go through an entire day and night of fun with much interruption or physical effort to passionately commit to a shot like classic dSLR photography. It's definitely a far cry this style of photography.
      I'd never look at this as a serious all-round worktool but it could sneak in some specialties (4k video or hyper-weather-proof, silent shutter etc...) there and there.

    00:12 Figuratively is also an adjective, but its meaning is quite different from literally. Figuratively is defined as based on or making use of figures of speech; metaphorical. So while literally means free from any metaphor or allegory, figurative deals specifically with these kinds of figures of speech.
