That's a myth that you get smaller lenses on M43. You need to convert both the aperture and focal length for, say, full frame equivalent comparison. You cannot gather more light by changing the sensor size. You cannot cheat physics. Otherwise, we wouldn't have needed the giant telescopes of the world. We could have just changed their sensor sizes. Two lenses on any system, with equal capabilities (e.g. depth of field, bokeh, noise level, fov, ...) have the same amount of glass and weight.
@@nodavood the aperture of the glass is the same in light gathering, only the depth of field changes. The sensor's light gathering characteristics is treated separately from the lens.
@@CheapCharlieChronicles No it's not just look at the mathematics of the F-stop. It's focal length/Aperture diameter = F Stop. So in order to have similar image quality with M43 you'd need faster glass. That said F1.7 is fantastic for an wide angle lens like this. It's more or less equal to the 12mm f2 rokinon on Fuji or Sony apsc. And with that AF performance and build quality it's easily worth the premium. Comparing prices to equiv. lenses in fullframe is often ridiculous as those bodies tend to be much more expensive and in most cases heavier. "This is what M43 is all about, a great little lens with a 1.7 aperture weighing only 130 grams and a reasonable price." I second that, i would've bought it for my girlfriend if she hadn't moved to Fujifilm like myself. This is indeed an lens that caters to M43 strengths. with a sensor like OM1, the day where we need a Full Frame for low light is no longer far away. with f1.7/1.8 primes like this, M43 would be a killer platform to shoot on for mostly everyone. Let Full Frame handle the bokehheads because right now, I think M43 could serve at least 95% of photographers and videographers who cares more about composition and story than a blurred background.
This is an f/3.5 equivalent lens. Crop factor applies to aperture just as much as focal length. MFT is and will always be useless for low light shooting, because physics can't be cheated. Shrinking the sensor does not give smaller lenses magic powers. Fast glass does not exist for MFT, because fast in proper terms would mean f/0.7, which is f/1.4 full frame equivalent. No, this is not just bokeh, it's low light performance as well. Anyone who says the opposite has no clue what they're talking about.
@@youknowwho9247 This is an f1.7 lens, stop saying nonsense you heard who knows where. If you mount the full frame Nikkor Z 50mm f1.8 lens on an APS-C camera like the Nikon Z50, the lens is still f1.8. You're suggesting that the Nikkor Z 35mm f1.8 on the Z50 would perform better than the Nikkor 35MM F/1.8 G DX, which is smaller and designed for APS-C cameras. AND THAT'S FALSE: the same amount of light would hit the APS-C sensor with both lenses. What changes is just the depth of field, as the crop factor forces you to change the distance from the subject if you want to keep the same field of view. The low light performance is directly related to sensor size and technology (BSI, stacked, etc). The bigger the sensor, the bigger is the pixel (or photosite) and the more light it gathers. It's plain simple.

I hoped the new VLog and the new sensor addressed that. Sort of the main reason I would upgrade. BTW, You guys have been helpful to me for many years. Keep up the good work! Cheers!

When I mounted Lumix DG 25mm F1.4 Summilux on my Oly M5 Mark III, i found quite a lot of purple fringing which was fixed by a UV filter, but from what I have tested, this occurs ONLY if you combine Olympus sensor with Lumix lens. So using Lumix body for a review was a good choice IMO.
Thank you for an interesting and valuable review. I’m considering the Leica DG Summilux 9/1.7 ASPH for shooting night sky / light-painted nightscapes using the OM-1’s starry sky AF and live composite, and wanted a low coma, corner-to-corner sharp and fast lens. My present workhorse for this is Leica’s Summilux 12/1.4 ASPH, but it sometimes isn’t quite wide enough.
I bought the LAOWA 6mm just a few days before the 9mm was leaked first. I am using the 14mm all the time and wanted something wider - so I went with the widest lens available. But now I am stuck with the 6mm It's more expensive, bigger, slower, no AF and no aperture reading. But it's wider.... I guess. You didn't mention distortion in your video - the 14mm is quite heavily corrected and can actually give you a much winder image in post if you uncheck "hide distorted areas" in capture one and the manufacturers lens profile. Does this happen with the 9mm as well? I have got s few photos that got developed into 25MP on my GX9 The 14mm, 20mm and now the 9mm make a nice set. But perhaps that's something for next year.
You know how to pronounce the letter 'Z', sometimes get Nikon correct, produce lively, info-packed videos with a good balance between humour and professionalism and, Chris and Jordan, you make a good team. Your channel is one of my go-to channels to learn about things photographic and you provide background views which are just a bit different to those of a neighbouring country. Keep up the good work!
I'm so glad the price is more affordable than the 8-18 zoom which is just out of my budget. I got an SLR Magic 8mm F4 which is also a great vlogging lens but things that look okay in focus on the screen end up much softer in the foreground in actuality, unless you set it to infinity and hold it far back. AF at similar wide angle would be amazing.
Hey guys. Thank you for all the great content! I'm wondering if you'll do a final review of the OM1? You've made a few videos about it already but I just noticed that you haven't named them the same as the videos of the Z9 and GH6. Of course, if you've already said all there is to say there's no need. Have a great weekend! Sweden
Great reviev - thank you - but one more question: Is it able to cover a total 90 degree horizontal angle of view ? Example: The camera is positioned in an 45 half angle in a corner of a room , hall or cross gangway. Do you see the left and the right wall ? I call it the 90 degree challenge
C&J, we like you 3000x of a Noct. Also this lens seems to be a good replacement for my 9-18 Oly, since I use that little guy in ultra-wide anyway, most of the time :)
Very good footage, great review...thank you for covering MFT; I am blown away by the lack of coverage since the "MFT is dead" videos came out...I mean, I can take shots on my MFT system and hold it side by side with my full frame, and it is hard to see any difference, so why not consider MFT a valuable product? You guys do though, so thanks!
youtubers have been killing micro 4/3 since forever. Most do not use a camera for more than a month, they do not even know what can be achieved with micro 4/3 ,many times because the brands that sponsor them prioritize the 35mm (badly called fullframe)
If you don't get better results than MFT grade images from your full frame system, you're using it wrong. I've shot both systems and MFT image quality is complete garbage by comparison. Closer to a smartphone than a full frame camera.
@@youknowwho9247 someone felt offended, read what I wrote again, your premise goes against you, if you don't get better images than with a phone, maybe you are the problem Both systems are different, saying that one is better than the other in everything does not make sense, if the 35mm or fullframe format works for you, as you call it, the micro 4/3 works better for me because of the type of photos / video what do I do. If the 35mm format works for you that's ok, good for you. by the way, my wife has several sony FF's and I still prefer the micro 4/3
A comparison between the Panasonic 9mm f1.7 and the Olympus 8mm f1.8 would be nice. I suppose that the "linear distortion" that they say the new Panasonic has, can come in handy on occasions when people appear, I sometimes use wide angles for portraits with architecture in the background, but on other occasions, I suppose that if you buy a super wide angle, a bit of extreme distortion is what you want, so.... I don't know which one to choose 😅

Thanks for a really nice review. Strongly considering one of these for myself. Anyone knows if it can take ordinary UV filters (i.e not ultra-slim) without vignetting?
I'm using Panasonic LUMIX G7 as a webcam and was looking for a better suited lense. My 14mm lense is still a bit too close up/zoomed in on me for my liking, based on the distance/position the camera has to be placed, within the boundaries of my set up and desk space. I take it this 9mm lense would be ideal and 'push me back' further?
hello, I have a pen-f with 30mm sigma and 42.5 nocticron and I need a compact lens that is hard to detach from my camera like the leica 9mm 1.7 or the leica 15mm 1.7 or the 20mm? I hope but not I think the 9mm has the same softness and leica look ... anyway I am interested in the color rendering ... advice?
Hey Chris, i’m a little stuck…have to chose between the 12mm f1.4 or a combination 9mm and 15mm f1.7. Do you ever had the chance to compare them…optical wise (i really understand, the focal lengths are different 😉)? Better two lenses or the faster one for the same budget…
Thanks, guys, interesting lens . . . wish you had compared it to other Oly and Pano wide primes or wide zooms in picture quality and uses, (e.g. Oly 12mm F2 etc.)
My name is Josh and I “Like” this video. DPReview TV has my full endorsement. Thank you for your consideration, stay tuned for more useless but pleasant comments.
would be cool to see a 9 or 12mm Leica with Power O.I.S. Coupled with internal IBIS from a gh5/gh6 and the wide lens + IS, it might make a gimbal obsolete for the given setup. Not sure why they don't do this. I understand wide lenses are inherently more stable, but there is still jitter and shake present.
Looks a great lens which could replace my 8-18. More to the point, what's that bag you were carrying? And will it take a G9 with a couple of primes, including that 9mm?
The lumix S 18mm 1.8 was announced by Lumix, but they release the m43 equivalent first. Anyway great job Pana, that's the MFT spirit... The heavy 1.7 zooms are prety stupid imo, since they weight the same as their ff equivalent.
Wonderful review on this lens! I just picked one up, and notice that I hear the autofocus pretty audibly when I half press on the shutter. Do you notice this on yours? Or should I be concerned that this is a defect on mine?
dang... now I need it for my GH6 :'( btw, question, would it be overkill to have this new 9mm f1.7 owning the 8-18mm f2.8-4? I know obviously the aperture is not the same but I'm referring to the focal length, I'm not sure if to get it, it is very attractive indeed.
The 8-18 is a great daytime lens, the 9mm would be excellent if you need to do some more lowlight work at night. The lens is so small you could easily carry both if cost is not a big issue.
I'm struggling with this same question! Depends on what you're trying to do. If you're going to vlog often, especially putting a camera on a selfie stick, the lighter weight + more bokeh potential are very interesting. This + E-M5 III = best lightest weight vlog setup. The only reason I'm hesiting is adding another lens will mess up my organization of my lenses & cameras on my shelves 🤦♂️

This will be the first lens I buy in years. Size, weight & price almost seem too good to be true!
Great review and wished you'd used the G9 but, appreciate your review nonetheless! Love the lens used on the GH6~
Great work, guys! What a cool little lens. :)
Now I need a compact MFT camera to use this lens. OM1 and GH6 are great but where is new G9 and G7?
I bought the LAOWA 6mm just a few days before the 9mm was leaked first.
I am using the 14mm all the time and wanted something wider - so I went with the widest lens available.
But now I am stuck with the 6mm
It's more expensive, bigger, slower, no AF and no aperture reading. But it's wider.... I guess.
You didn't mention distortion in your video - the 14mm is quite heavily corrected and can actually give you a much winder image in post if you uncheck "hide distorted areas" in capture one and the manufacturers lens profile. Does this happen with the 9mm as well? I have got s few photos that got developed into 25MP on my GX9
The 14mm, 20mm and now the 9mm make a nice set. But perhaps that's something for next year.
6mm is dramatically wider than 9mm, so it depends on your use case
You know how to pronounce the letter 'Z', sometimes get Nikon correct, produce lively, info-packed videos with a good balance between humour and professionalism and, Chris and Jordan, you make a good team. Your channel is one of my go-to channels to learn about things photographic and you provide background views which are just a bit different to those of a neighbouring country. Keep up the good work!
This is the way I like a review, short and simple
You guys are great, my best buddies.
As always a superb video / Ulf
Now that is a pretty little thing. I would be lining up to pick one up if i still had an M43 camera.
Wish the future owners good light.
The new 18mm f1.8 for the Lumix S is almost here! ❤️
This is what I need!!! But when? Can't find any info newer than last November
Nice review guys! I only wish the autofocus test could have been 2-3 minutes longer…
i love that lens! I love Jordan. Chris has an issue with sharing.
I have an issue with sharing!!!???
Exciting New Lens. If you don't need a Ultra Wide Zoom, this is the one lens. Inexpensive too.
Bit sad to not see some astro examples with this lens, but I get that migh tbe difficult for you to set up.
Very nice. I might add a m/f system to my Nikon arsenal. Thanks for the video!
I would love to see a Panasonic 9mm vs Laowa 7.5 comparison...
At 5:14, are the f/1.7 and f/4 images reversed? f/1.7 looks sharper on my screen comparatively. Very impressive in either case.
Same. Especially comparing the signature on the cash bill.
Ohh, very nice combination of features. Great job on the video as usual!
I'll absolutely buy this for my GM1
Good review, thanks. Would be great to see a head to head between this and the new Laowa 6mm zero D
I like youuuuuuu.. I saw you ages ago for the first time on Creative Live, you were one of the "students" back then. It was you, right????
Good review. I just ordered one.
Awesome video. Keep up the good. Can't wait for more
Hey guys. Thank you for all the great content! I'm wondering if you'll do a final review of the OM1? You've made a few videos about it already but I just noticed that you haven't named them the same as the videos of the Z9 and GH6. Of course, if you've already said all there is to say there's no need.
Have a great weekend!
Sweden
I like you guys!
But I LOVE the looks of this lens. Gonna get it for the weather sealing which the Laowa 10/2 doesn't have.
I already have the Oly 7-14/2.8, would the 9/1.7 still be worth getting?
Great reviev - thank you - but one more question:
Is it able to cover a total 90 degree horizontal angle of view ?
Closer to a smartphone than a full frame camera.
youtube coverage is mostly set by marketing decisions...
@@youknowwho9247 someone felt offended, read what I wrote again, your premise goes against you, if you don't get better images than with a phone, maybe you are the problem
Both systems are different, saying that one is better than the other in everything does not make sense, if the 35mm or fullframe format works for you, as you call it, the micro 4/3 works better for me because of the type of photos / video what do I do.
Where is the Leica aperture dial at the front of the lens like the 15mm….?????
Chris and Jordan, wanna know how much you're liked?
My wireless mouse ran out of batteries and I wanted to watch this video on my lunch break, so I opened chrome and browsed through youtube using keyboard shortcuts to get to this video AND to type this comment. Do you know how many times I had to hit TAB for this?
Cheers!
Thanks for a really nice review. Strongly considering one of these for myself. Anyone knows if it can take ordinary UV filters (i.e not ultra-slim) without vignetting?
I like both of a lot!
I like you guys enough... j/k I think you both are great and even more so since you did a scene from a movie my company made a while back.
Which movie?
@@dpreview The Nice Guys
I'm using Panasonic LUMIX G7 as a webcam and was looking for a better suited lense. My 14mm lense is still a bit too close up/zoomed in on me for my liking, based on the distance/position the camera has to be placed, within the boundaries of my set up and desk space. I take it this 9mm lense would be ideal and 'push me back' further?
Super like you guys. And this lens. Wow. Definitely on the list.
Great video, but Jordan... Why so flat and low contrast this time?
...and tell us how much you Leicas. I do love you guys. Love from Germany.
perfect lens/ perfect video.
hello, I have a pen-f with 30mm sigma and 42.5 nocticron and I need a compact lens that is hard to detach from my camera like the leica 9mm 1.7 or the leica 15mm 1.7 or the 20mm? I hope but not I think the 9mm has the same softness and leica look ... anyway I am interested in the color rendering ... advice?
Any sign of the 18mm L Mount?
Nice review. Great lens
The whisper while saying you stole Jordan's GH6 tho🤣🤣🤣 Then Jordan catch you using it💀💀💀
hey chris can you review the canon rebel t7
Thank you for your consideration, stay tuned for more useless but pleasant comments.
this lens is now on my list. Thanks !
would be cool to see a 9 or 12mm Leica with Power O.I.S. Coupled with internal IBIS from a gh5/gh6 and the wide lens + IS, it might make a gimbal obsolete for the given setup. Not sure why they don't do this. I understand wide lenses are inherently more stable, but there is still jitter and shake present.
good review, but i'm undecided whether to pay for this leica 9mm or the laowa 7.5, for my lumix G9.
I have always liked you guys! 😂👍🏾🙏🏾
Looks a great lens which could replace my 8-18. More to the point, what's that bag you were carrying? And will it take a G9 with a couple of primes, including that 9mm?
What’sthat high pitched sound at 5:38 ?
The lumix S 18mm 1.8 was announced by Lumix, but they release the m43 equivalent first. Anyway great job Pana, that's the MFT spirit... The heavy 1.7 zooms are prety stupid imo, since they weight the same as their ff equivalent.
Wonderful review on this lens! I just picked one up, and notice that I hear the autofocus pretty audibly when I half press on the shutter. Do you notice this on yours? Or should I be concerned that this is a defect on mine?
Oh oh. Please tell us it is just a bad copy.
Does anyone know if this lens is compatible with the Lumix S5? If not, which adapter would I need for this to work?
Definitely getting this lens
Don't give a crap about this lens or Panasonic, but I like you, Chris. I like you.
Yes!
dang... now I need it for my GH6 :'( btw, question, would it be overkill to have this new 9mm f1.7 owning the 8-18mm f2.8-4?
Great video
good luck with the Stanley Cup playoffs
Just talked to my dealer. Their system now show delivery of the 9 mm in OCTOBER.
