Early Greger had so much ASMR quality.
You're getting very sleepy; your eyelids are getting heavy. 😴 😀
True but I do like he's enthusiasm these days
i can totally picture him hiding somewhere at home to do these recordings quietly. maybe before the family wakes up.
2 tablespoons in my cereal everyday. Whole wheat....some oatmeal...could go either way, hot or cold...but always banana, blueberries flax seed and walnuts. Fills me up great and I don't even think about food until lunchtime....like it's supposed to be.
hope you grind your 2 tbsp.
Dr.Greger is nearly whispering, he must be at his home studio trying not to wake his family. Lol
my thought exactly!
I love it when dr greger states the side effects of plant foods!
but I hate the taste of flax gotta get those benefits
Flackers got it. I usually add the flax to one meal like oatmeal, pasta, rice, it almost eliminates the flax taste
I'm all about the flax
I use the organic flax meal. Its super easy& delicious!
@nassib, you can totally hat it & cook/bake with it! I put it in my corn bread also. I make muffins with it. It's great
You convinced me! I'll buy 'em tomorrow!
Awesome flax! I buy it whole and grind it as needed...2 Tablespoons every day with Greek yogurt and organic blueberries....or mixed in with oats...or on a salad. Even mixed in with nut butter on whole grain toast. Thanks for great videos!
Yay I eat flax seeds with my porridge every morning. :)
50Shadesof Kale me too!
Do you grind them though?
I think that's the perfect way to add them to your diet.
That's what I do!
Chris10B yes
@3x3 I eat my ground flax with oats and soymilk too 🌱
Hello,
I just read the scientific paper Dr. Greger showed in this video but
there is no utterance regarding an extended menstrual cycle due to a
higher lignan intake.
I now wonder where does this information come from?
The paper only shows a decreased risk of a certain type of cancer for women who still have not had their menopause yet.
I like to eat flax seeds hemp seeds and granola berries on my yogurt. I also eat oat meal and dried mixed nuts and fruit
Changed my diet to include Flax Seeds, Chia Seeds, Pumpkin Seeds, Sunflower Seeds… everyday, mixed with some homemade Apple sauce… I stopped eating bread at breakfast and eat these seeds instead. Wonderful. Oh, just be sure to increase your water intake as well. Your gut will thank you.
Applesauce recipe: Peel and dice about ten apples, put them into a crockpot with the juice of two limes (or lemon juice) add about one tsp of ground cinnamon and cook for about five hours. Near the end of cooking you can mash them a bit if they haven’t become smooth enough for you. I like to add a handful of raisins at the end. They’ll plump up and add even more sweetness to the applesauce. Better yet add a handful of a dried berry mix. Enjoy.
Nooooo sugar.
I buy flax pre ground and keep it in the freezer and make a drink with it every morning. But I wonder if I'm getting much flax benefit from already ground flax.
Can you freeze the seeds or does this destroy the good nutrients?
Very interesting! Thank you!
Thank you so much dr this really helps!
IF I soak my flax seeds in vinegar, will that make them digestible without having to grind them?
A real smart guy...thanks yoy..Ronald
what about motherless milks? i love this guy! both for his nutrition advice and his humor.
I make a jar berries, banana and crushed flax and leave in the fridge. A scoop in the morning is a fast tasty breakfast or healthy evening snack. Stays fresh for weeks.
Mister greger... me preocupa terriblemente los estrógenos en la semilla de Lino por favor me dé una respuesta
Flackers! Love them and they come in flavors like roasted tomato, and my favorite-currants. I munch on a few of these each night, chewing well and voila, I have my couple of TB of flax. Never been a fan of flax but these are pretty tasty. Check em out
Great video. Thank you very much for your hard work!
My gran used flax seed oil and lemon juice as a cold remedy.
What happens to flax seeds that have been kept in a jar for more than a year that's only opened to scoop out another tablespoon of flax seeds? Are they worthless or worse? Thanks
Old but gold ~
Should I also keep chia seeds in the fridge?
What about sprouting flax?
Why is Dr. Greger trying to seduce me with his voice?
He sounds like he's trying to be quiet, should be sleeping, or a little stoned?
I was thinking the same thing!
It is working.
He's aiming for a lucrative GPS voice contract.
The sly dog!
Dr. Greger, good day. May we ask for enlightenment about flaxseed being tied to increase estrogen in Men? Is this true?
Best ASMR ever! lol
I know that this is an old video but what about the cyanogenic glycoside in the flax seeds?
Eat flaxseed with beans. The lectins will neutralize them.
but is the oil bad for you or is it ok to use?
I love this channel!
would mixing a tbsp of ground flax with a tbsp of peanut butter make it more palatable? Hmmm
I typically add it to oatmeal
I am not in a smoothie mood (Ik healthy right lol) but I do put them in my cereal and chew them whole.
It sure doesn't taste all that good ground but like many other items that are good for your gut and body you find ways to improve taste and texture. Greek yogurt with various blended whole fruits, berries and occasionally hot peppers is my way of getting the job done.
Hi. I've bought the 'How not to die Cookbook' and there it says (and in this video) the recommendation to eat 1 tabelspoon of crusched flaxseeds per day. My problem is that my country's state health organisation has explicity said that one should eat flaxseeds crusched due to the risk of c.posioning. We can't buy them crusched anywhere since this was announced. My problem is not that I can't crush them myself... I kinda feel slightly afraid when I eat my daily (not crushed) tabelspoon of flaxseeds. Don't know what to Think?!
Get a blender ....😁
yass, gotta get that omega 3 yo, i started adding them to my oatmeal+ chia seeds, yum yum~
Grind your chia to get all the omega 3 benefits!
@@jamesf5303 i somtimes just soak em, gets the gell out, it does the same thing without cleaning a blender doesnt it?
@@TheWipal Im not sure, what i do know is that chia works the same way as flax, if they're not ground they pass right through without providing all their benefits
what about the bloating caused by flax?
I have a mini grinder to mill my flax seeds for porridge etc. I use nut milk made with a handful of nuts and half litre of water, put in Vitamix for maybe 30 seconds at top speed! Watch the milk form before your eyes then add appropriate amount to cook porridge in the microwave. Making your own milk is so much cheaper and no packaging. OK shop bought stuff has added vitamins but on a decent vegan diet, who needs these. Only problem..Vitamix are very expensive in the UK, what with the taxes.
what about flax and men?
"may be easier if you just eat plants" DR Greger in one of his interesting science based vids
I've heard that oxidation on flaxseed meal, which is constantly exposed to oxygen once ground, weakens some of the effectiveness of the omega-3.
Is it best to buy whole flaxseeds and then grind them on our own, or is buying flaxseed meal just as beneficial?
Get whole seeds and grind what just you’ll need for that meal. Use a coffee grinder. It literally takes five seconds.
After they've been ground they need to be kept in the fridge.
Should I soak them before eating?
DaN Oliveira: The seeds themselves don’t break down in your gut - soaked or not soaked. You must grind them down for digestion.
Never mind the subject,, you have a very good talent for telling a stories, you must make money of it, you have the power to make any poor subject sounds interesting.
How could you recommend to use to take flax, but also no saturated fat?
Herb Sewell There are good fats like the ESSENTIAL fatty acids like omega-3, which you get from flax seeds, and bad fats like saturated fat and trans fat. They are not the same just because they are both fats.
There is saturated fat in flax seed.
In very small quantities...
Any advice for people who get a sharp stomach ache from flax ? Its weird I used to eat crackers and bread with flax on them no issues there. But when I add them myself grounded or not I get these sharp stomach pains. And I can't find really good information on it. I want to be part of the flax team 😅....
it means you need to poop
Make sure you grind them properly, and eat just small amounts with lots of water. If your stomach still hurts, then Im out of ideas lol
If a man is on ADT for prostate cancer, he can have hot flashes, so if flax seeds can reduce them great.
*Open question* I just bought Bob's Red Mill organic ground flax. Did I make a mistake? I know fresh ground is best, but I read buying pre ground may actually be harmful, as the omega 3 oils go rancid. There is a "use by" date on the package, which is about a year from now. Any & all info greatly appreciated, thanks in advance.
Vegan Stoner Yes, thanks for the reply. I was looking for a pass on the pre-ground.
+Joseph1NJ From what I read the oil in the preground flax goes bad if left too long like that, and stores do keep them like that for a long time. It's probably better to just put whole ones in a blender yourself when you want to use them. Minimal effort.
+Joseph1NJ I buy the same. Just keep the bag in your fridge after you open it and you should be fine. If the oils go rancid you will notice. The bag says it will keep in the fridge for several months.
f Thanks for the reply. As to rancid, this brand always smells & tastes fresh, and the bag is darkened to not allow light. Everyone says grind your own, not a big deal to do, but I think this is fine as well.
+Joseph1NJ use a coffee grinder
Make flax microgreens that can ge harvested in 7 days!
Thank you I will try that.
I buy cold milled flax seeds.
+Joe R Me too, stays fresh for a long time in de fridge.

Q. Is flaxseed high in estrogen, and therefore bad for men?
Lion-Heart IV it's probably the same situation as soy where the plant estrogens actually have no negative effect on testosterone levels.
Omega Zero I'm not trying to demean you I'm seriously just trying to learn : should I listen to you or did you just quickly look this up? Srsly it was just a question.
Lion-Heart IV no, they’re phytoestrogens, therefore have no effect on actual oestrogen levels.
@Aimée Flaherty tell that to hops
I was curious about that too, as Im a guy, so I looked it up and found a study, that looked whether flaxseed can help with prostate cancer in men, but they also determined the testosterone levels of the men before and after the experiment. The researchers looked if "A low-fat diet supplemented with flaxseed may help reduce the risk of prostate cancer". I copied the part that I think is the most important for us:
- "The pilot study involved 25 patients with prostate cancer who were awaiting prostatectomy (surgical removal of the prostate). Baseline levels of prostate-specific antigen (PSA), testosterone, free androgen index and total serum
cholesterol were determined at the beginning of the study. The tumors of those on the diet were then matched with 25 historic cases, equal in age, race, PSA level at diagnosis and biopsy Gleason sum (a scoring system used to grade prostate tumors) to compare tumor progression and biomarkers after the dietary intervention. The men were on the low-fat, flaxseed-supplemented diet for an average of 34 days. Finely ground flaxseed was used in the study because, in its natu-
ral form, flaxseed is a pointy, tough seed that can puncture the intestines when consumed in the amounts used in this study (three rounded tablespoons a day). The ground flaxseed in the study was vacuum-packed (ground flaxseed can quickly go rancid) and had added emulsifiers for ease of mixing. The men were instructed to sprinkle the flaxseed on their cereal or mix it into juices, yogurt or applesauce. Researchers reported good compliance with the diet and said it was tolerated well. At the end of the study, the researchers observed that the men on the diet had significant decreases in cholesterol, and both total and free testosterone. While there was a decrease in testosterone levels, they noted that none of the participants in the study suffered decreased libido or sexual dysfunction. There was a trend toward a decrease in PSA levels in men with early-stage prostate cancer (Gleason sums of six or less), but in men with
advanced prostate cancer (Gleason sums of more than six) PSA levels continued to rise.
“It’s not surprising that a diet therapy that was only taken for an average of 34 days had little effect on men with aggressive disease,” Demark-Wahnefried said. “But what we did see was that for the men on the diet, their tumor
cells did not divide as quickly and there was a greater rate of apoptosis (tumor cell death) in this group.” " -
So yea, even though the testosterone levels of the men decreased, they didnt suffer from decreased libido or sexual dysfunction. Which personally was my main concern with flaxseeds :)
I enoucourage everyone to read the full study though, its not much longer than what I've already posted. I eat 10-15gr of freshly ground flaxseed every morning now (grinding them freshly each day with a coffee grinder).
Here is the link to the study:

I have dessertspoon in the morning with my oats and another dessertspoon later in the day in a smoothie.
I am trying to find a way to eat them more, but I dont really like smoothies. I tried a banana smoothie and I hate the texture and taste even if I love to eat banana's whole.
+Sayuas I personally eat them (soaked) with buckwheat, honey and cinnamon almost everyday
I usually sprinkle it over oatmeal and in baking, esp breads.
Sayuas tbh i just take a teaspoon a day and chew them until it becomes a gel paste. Make them into flax egg replacer ou sprinkle over yogurt, salads, meals...
Super Saiyan Fitness I do this as well and it works great!
You can add ground flax seeds to soups, casseroles, stews etc and you won’t even notice them except they will thicken the consistency of these dishes a bit which is probably a good thing if you have added too much water.
Apparently ground flaxseed is toxic (according to Sweden's NFA). I've only just discovered this and want to know if it's true...?
No, flaxseed when taken raw has extremely small amounts of different compounds that *can form cyonide, but those compounds are not only separate in the seeds and have never been demonstrated to actually raise cyonide levels in the blood. There is more Arsenic in 5 grams of chicken then there is cyonide forming compounds in a 1000 grams of raw flax seed. And if you are really worried throw your meal or seeds in the food processor, the heat from separation is enough to break those compounds down.
The NFA & Swedish nutritional research has been shown to be compromised over and over, I don't trust nutritional research out of Sweden.
There are trace amounts of heavy metals and poisons in almost all foods & your body can handle it, what you should look at is the parts per billion and how that chemical chain is formed. Technically Apples are high in Arsenic as well... If you eat the seeds in large amounts, you can distill cyonide from plum cores too.
You’d prob half to eat 3 wheelbarrows a day for 20 years for toxicity. Then it would maybe be possible.
what about the studies showing lower testosterone levels, both DHT and regular Testosterone.

DR Greger said "... so if fish eater lady came to my office I'll just hold up my hand and say just a flax ma'me " I like DR Mike for his special interesting way of presenting topics based on experiments
I got 25 pounds of flax seeds and just found out the have a shelf-life of only four to six months. My guess is I'll be throwing a lot of them away. 'Wish I'da know that before I bought all that load. Just did the same thing after buying 25 pounds of brown rice. Same thing, only four to six months. What a waste.
Motherless milk, I love that!
What about the cyanide in flax seeds? The Swedish national food authority says ground flaxseeds should not be consumed. It can lead to poisoning.
Narrater; Is that Jeff Goldblum?
You forgot; antioxidants!
4:30 10$ for a daily flax?
$10 per year for a daily dose, he meant.
5 tons of flax
Flax seed for diverticulitis? Flax seed to decrease testosterone and increase estrogen?
”motherless milk” 🤔
Plant-based milk
@@Vegan_4The_Animals ahhh!
No more weed smoking while making videos.
Hulagu Kahn lmao
Ok good health time. 1 or 2 tablespoons per day. Keep the lead in your pencil.
Still disturbing that the fact of ground flax having unknown amounts cyanogenic glycosides never is being addressed by Dr. Greger.
SisterPotato yeah i thought so too...
" just a flax ma'me" to avoid medicine side effects
This is how Dr. Greger sounds on heroin.
I have found his videos false mixed with truth,,,,,
Pretty irresponsible to not even mention that Flax seeds are the single highest source of phytoestrogens - almost 4x soy.
ssaxe01s they're called lignans. He does talk about them. Namely, the great health benefits they have.
