Me either, when I saw him with Ringo I was shocked, "He's also the Singer!!!!" I read a few interviews with him in Guitar Magazines back in the 80's, I don't think they mentioned he sang, I don't know much about Toto but if they all sing (which it looks like from this video) then he would not be introduced as the Singer, and it was Guitar Magazine interviews, the Singing would not be a topic of conversation back in the Amateur 80's. (There are people here who ask better questions and do better interviews than most "corporate" reporters did back then. The 80's is like a bunch of absent-minded and rushed stoners working in the Media). He looks like a young Dylan here. Mostly the Hair I guess.

“Rosanna” “Unchain my Heart” and “Georgy Porgy” (I just realized he sang that one) are just a few of the gems that he was the lead vocal. You’re right, he is an amazing talent. I love his guitar work!
Toto is one of the best recorded bands ever, they are flawless in their delivery, meticulous in their instrumentation and very genuine in their writing, not many bands have their production quality either.
Toto definitely made their mark with big hits like Africa and Rosanna, but I love it and think it's a testimonial to just how great the group was when everyone has a different opinion on their best song. No wrong answer with Toto.

I was 14 years old when this song came out. It has been easily 40 years since I've heard it. It sounds even better than I recall. Hello from South Carolina, U.S.A. ✌️🇺🇲
Jeff had such great feel for the music when playing hence the reason he was a session drummer for so many musicians. He'll always be remembered. RIP him and his brother Mike
They should be inducted in the Rock n Roll Hall Of Fame. This song 99 is one of their first hits. Look how young they were. I was always so in love with Steve Lukather. He is so cute in this video!❤ Wonderful instrumental and vocals. Beautiful music!
My sister used to say that I was lucky with the 80s, and she got the 90s. It actually was the mid 70s to mid 80s. Our underage years had great music, and depending on where lived, had neighborhood youth group friends and families fun. Like watching the moms have Mary Kay cosmetics and Tupperware lunches, and garden club, and of course helped out with it all. Some much more all out preparations than others. My mom always cooked too much in amounts, and too much leftovers, so she'd tell me to bring over some of the neighborhood guy friends to empty the refrigerator. They loved it, especially if was more exotic foods, like from Spain or The Phillipines, German, Italian, whatever she felt like making. In that neighborhood also had great birthday parties, with live bands, of some local teenage guys and their bands. It wasn't expensive, but unique. My mom wasn't much into my wandering around too much, so she made the social life at our house, but depending on who she trusted of her friends too, for me to go to their house for a while. Especially girlfriends who had brothers. The brothers had to be trustworthy too. There never was any problems at all. I think that was lucky for a long time. Problems around here, they weren't of my inner circles to that extent at all. Took too many years to find out the truth if would have been back then. Still was unexpected. What have in common, European farmers, father's side, of countries that ended up under The Iron Curtain for decades. Red flag, victimhood stories about their families. Maybe under The European Iron Curtain would have come out better than in the USA. Sarcasm. This country doesn't need ungrateful snowflakes wickedness, because ruins it for everyone else in the country and worldwide.
I’ve been kind of obsessed with all-things-Toto during this crazy summer of 2020. Comfort food for the ears. I remember being about 10 years old (I just turned 50) and LOVING this song. Toto having done session work with endless groups notably Mike Jackson should earn them a special place in anyones's musical world.

You can say that again... If anyone deserves to be in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame it is definitely Toto, 99 is one of my all time favorite songs by them! If you guys are still listening, you know good music.
My love for TOTO comes from them not try-harding a "look" or "lifestyle" but being these supreme musicians who could do just about anything. They almost look geeky and mainstream next to other contemporary bands but they still deliver high quality sound and musicianship almost five decades later. Almost every one of their songs could have been bangers, their level is so consistent, so you keep listening to the same ten tracks, ten hits and then remember they did so much more and every one is just as good.
One of the greatest 1980s bands ever. ToTo has so many hits it's difficult to pick just one song that's a favorite of mine, but this one is certainly one of them.🎶🎵
I won a ticket to go to their concert when they came to my country, I still can't believe I was there listening to those hits , they played Africa at the end, and it was a dream made true!
Love the piano riff done with just index fingers. Reminds me of Schroeder in the Peanuts Gang when Lucy angers him over his ways of playing Jingle Bells.

Makes me think of Get Smart the Tele show I watched as a kid. Maxwell Smart and 99. Great show. Great song. Toto's music always gives me the best feeling. 🥰
Remember this in 1980 when I started high school. Brings back many memories. Lovely song. Steve Lukather's voice was suited well to the mellower songs and ballads. Really good band .
When I was in middle school with parents who constantly abused me emotionally to the point I could not fall asleep at night, I would play this song on my shitty little cassette player in bed OVER AND OVER until I was able to finally drift off to sleep. To this day whenever I hear this song it still calms my nerves and relaxes me. Thank you Toto for getting me through some very tough times!
SkiCourchevel, I'm sorry you had to endure that. I hope you've found some peace..I had the opposite childhood, but still feel like a psychotic kite with holes, just flopping in the wind..anywho, sending good juju and vibes...and this song is a masterpiece!
@@SlumberSource Father passed a dozen years ago and have not spoken to my mom in 6-7 years. I am trying to be the exact opposite with our daughter now (she is three). It's kinda sad and weird at the same time. I am sure I could give a therapist all they could handle. Hope you are doing well!
Wow John! I agree. You nailed it. In my opinion, Steve was even the first SHREDDER. I mean like, White Sister and All us boys. Also, I've never read such awesome comments as on this song. Keep rocking brother!☑️.

Steve voice nowadays is a far cry of what it was, he must step down the lead vocals and allow a new singer to sing all these classics. Otherwise he is an egotistical guitar player.🤣
I LOVE this group! They always pull off a great song. And, they all worked together as a group, individually. These men are musical geniuses, strong and talented musicians.
Another song I could listen to on a loop. Love the melody, and the musicianship is great. Jeff Porcaro was amazing. I didn’t even hear the cowbell note he threw in till I watched the video. Simply amazing. Lukather has a great voice, the synths are great, and I love the story. Written with the movie THX-1138 in mind, it concerns a place where humanity has been extinguished and all humans are now numbers. Hence his love for ‘99’ Simply awesome!
I always wondered what this song was about. The chords to this song are super hard and Steve Lukather plays them with wondrous ease. Loved this group from the beginning.
It's June 2021: easily one of their BEST songs written & performed. I have always love & respected this bands music, works & skills...top notch always👍🏿💯💜
Piano movement and introduction. A steady groove and back beat. Taste full bridge and transition to a peacefull resolution. Haunting melody. What is there not to like about this song.
My younger brother called them a one hit wonder. I thought my ears would blow off. I wrote down there many hits and e-mailed it to him. Kids. Happiest times in my life. Love them, always have.
Not sure who you are, but you clearly like toto one of if not my favourite band and Im pretty sure your picture is from avatar my favourite movie... youre awesome!
Lol! Okay thanks for this comment because for some stupid reason this beautiful song just popped into my head (I'm 53 so I remember it well on my teens) - and I never really gave it much thought as to what the 99 actually meant, but super oddly enough I lived in Edmonton when the song came out as a kid and I never really connected the two. And I would put lots and lots of money on it that the song wasn't written for Gretzky! 😆. So can somebody please tell me what 99 is supposed to mean in this song? Was it like Prince?! (1999)??
at least that was the word when I was a kid and this song first came out. But I just read that David Paich has stated it was based on George Lucas' sci-fi film "THX 1138", and you can see from the music video that they indeed took influences visually from that film. However, "99" is not really mentioned in the film, and the characters' numeric names are all much higher than 99.... so there's still some speculation that there was still some small influence as well from the Agent 99 character played by Barbara Feldon in the TV series.
So many great bands were formed in the 70s Like Toto . Boston , Van Halen, Kiss ,The Eagles The Cars Blondie Acdc Queen, The Police .The Clash. White Snake , Bto Elo, Aerosmith Kiss , Ambrosia were just a few
DAMN........Toto's first album is still one of my most cherished pieces of music to listen to.....and remember how great rock n roll used to be....!!!!!!
Man, Steve Lukather sings like a Beatle. And what a guitarist he is at the same time. What a great band Toto is. Never listening to the shit the bands put out today while i got this!
I love this song. I'm a golfer, I had a set of Kenneth Smith golf clubs and the sand wedge had the number 99 on it. When I was away from the cart and my friend ask me what club I needed, I'd say 99, and we'd sing this song on the golf course, luv it.

Hi🎉
On replay, over and over. I wasn’t even a teen when this came out. That’s how much I love it - from my best childhood days!
Makes me think of Get Smart the Tele show I watched as a kid. Maxwell Smart and 99. Great show. Great song. Toto's music always gives me the best feeling. 🥰
Yes! I always think of stylish Barbara Feldon when I hear this song!
My absolute favorite Toto song, followed by I’ll Be Over You.
I’ll Be Over You...hands down my #1. I hear that and I’m transported back to the 80s.
I’ll be over you is my fav! Then Without Your Love.
I agree, my two favorite's also.
Yes my two favorite songs by Toto!! Reminds me of my childhood/teenage years
Hold the line... Maybe the best song ever..!! 😉👍
Remember this in 1980 when I started high school. Brings back many memories. Lovely song. Steve Lukather's voice was suited well to the mellower songs and ballads. Really good band .
This came out when I was a kid in high school. An old dude now, still sounds great to my ears. Brings back good memories.
The smoothest TOTO song ever. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
How young they were..! And so gorgeous.. 🧡
Sin duda una de las mejores bandas de todos los tiempos. Este tema una bella obra de arte.
TOTO FOREVER
What happened to your parents?
Sorry to hear about the abuse and glad toto was a comfort
@@SlumberSource Father passed a dozen years ago and have not spoken to my mom in 6-7 years. I am trying to be the exact opposite with our daughter now (she is three). She laughs and smiles all the time, which made me reflect back with my wife the other day. I told her until I was 16 or so, I have zero memories of laughter from my childhood. It's kinda sad and weird at the same time. I am sure I could give a therapist all they could handle. Hope you are doing well!
@@SkiCourchevel CONGRATS! The horror ends with you. You have completely altered the future for your family
Never get tired of this song ,what a talent of these musicians their work will forever live on.
Hola
Everything TOTO did was underrated imo. They never did a bad song.
Wow John! I agree. You nailed it. In my opinion, Steve was even the first SHREDDER. I mean like, White Sister and All us boys. Also, I've never read such awesome comments as on this song. Keep rocking brother!☑️.
Underrated, underrated.
I am SO TIRED of that word.
Besides, just WHO underrated them?
But I didn’t understand why Steve disliked this song
there score for Dune was horrible
@@samsonwilkinson8090 Basically the entire music press at the time wrote them off, even though were some of most skilled musicians in the world.
Dave, I’m sooo envious of you bagging Wanda….bless both of you in this life and beyond….beautiful human beings…LLHS class of 1985…Lake County, California
I've loved this band almost 4 decades. From the first hit, till today.
chronic Stitcher Me, too! Such talent!
Just saw them live in the OC!
Sounds like an Addiction!
Yes! THE BEST SINCE 1976!
sorry but I do not laugh at you. Just said they're the best, ok? THANKS.
His voice is beautiful. This song has so much emotion in it.
how drunk do you have to be?
@@aedgardaethelredd5578 I can't wrap my head around folks that will take time out of their day to show their entire ass to a group of strangers. What's the point ? I bet life would be more enjoyable for you if you didn't.
Steve voice nowadays is a far cry of what it was, he must step down the lead vocals and allow a new singer to sing all these classics. Otherwise he is an egotistical guitar player.🤣
@@TheMoonchild1969 and what are you mate? Moonchild wanker from nowhere?
@TheMoonchild1969 I disagree. I like that he still sings.
Uma banda que merece todo respeito. Sem dúvida, uma das melhores. Curto até hoje.
Toto is an incredibly talented and versatile band...can play virtually most genres of music and great at that..
Cowbell at 3:23
I always wondered what this song was about. The chords to this song are super hard and Steve Lukather plays them with wondrous ease. Loved this group from the beginning.
toto had talent within every member. most especially, they were so damn smooth
It's June 2021: easily one of their BEST songs written & performed. I have always love & respected this bands music, works & skills...top notch always👍🏿💯💜
👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
One of the best bands of all time.
Toto ze swoim przebojem 99 , jednym z pierwszych hitów wszechczasów . Klasyka muzyki rockowej w wykonaniu grupy Toto.
Piano movement and introduction. A steady groove and back beat. Taste full bridge and transition to a peacefull resolution. Haunting melody. What is there not to like about this song.
Simply a beautiful song...I used to listen to this song over and over when I was a kid.....”99” I Love You...😘
Otra inolvidable y hermosa obra musical, qué gran recuerdo para la historia, gracias TOTO por tanto talento...!!!
I LIKE 99 way better than BORING Africa
My younger brother called them a one hit wonder. I thought my ears would blow off. I wrote down there many hits and e-mailed it to him. Kids. Happiest times in my life. Love them, always have.
Jeff Porcaro..Einer der besten Schlagzeuger auf der Welt .
I love Lukather's genuine smile as he starts to sing. Then it's like he pulls it together and they remind him he's supposed to sing sexy, ha ha.
Thank you for notice that... It's actually very pretty to see...he was soooo young and beautiful 😍😍😍😍
Not sure how genuine it was. He hates this song...
@@phillybri Actually, sure he said that he hates it, but later confirmed that he was kidding and played it at a Toto show.
Karisa Mullen 7س
I saw them earlier this month, but I wish I had been around to see the original lineup.
TOTO is one my favorite bands ever...♥️
me too
They all could sing and had tons of musicianship, and how damn cute Steve Lukather looked in this video lol, what an amazing band.
Yeah he's cute back then
Yeahhh I fell in love 😍😍😍
Not sure who you are, but you clearly like toto one of if not my favourite band and Im pretty sure your picture is from avatar my favourite movie... youre awesome!
Steve Lukather is one of the most recorded guitarists in history and certainly one of the most prolific sidemen of his day.
Luke was adorable back then still cute. Love Toto.
70's and 80' we're great times !!!
Even the 90's were a blast!🔥🎸🥃👍
It's a song I used to listen to when I was a high school student.
This is my favorite song.
Thank you very much.
That bass line just adds some serious funk flavor, great ballad!
Donald Edmunds
Best hockey song ever written!
So many memories driving through Edmonton and blasting this song as Gretzky was reeling in Stanley Cups!
@@lancemannion4113 "99" was the female Agent 99 on the "Get Smart" comedy spy series that played on TV in the late 60's/early 70's.
at least that was the word when I was a kid and this song first came out.
Wow !! This was always a favorite, but I forgot how beautiful it was; a haunting masterpiece. It evokes a lot of memories. 😃😃😄😄😀😀
Agree
This was a favorite back in 1979 and it’s still fantastic in 2021 ❤️
❤❤
I love this song ❤️
I stumbled across this song a couple days ago and I can't stop listening
You are 99 times pretty face!!
My dad took me to see toto in 2014, I’m 22 myself and they’ve always been one of my favourites, timeless.
Yet another super group from the 70s, whose sound never grows old! Phenomenal!
So, wonderfully emotional. Toto had to been thinking about a woman to write this song. Gracious! It's a beautiful song and tune.
Toto is one of my favourite bands ever!
This is music, creativity, talent and no profanity. What trash is being thrown together these days will never compare. What a waste of a music generation.
Don't be jaded! There are plenty of fantastic musicians now a days. The style has changed definitely but it doesn't make it any less talented.
that's probably what your grandparents thought about this music lol, the cycle continues onward!!!!
Agree @@Thailerr
Toto had an unmistakable sound--you knew it was Toto as soon as it played
Favorite Toto song! The piano intro is mesmerizing...

Sounds like overjoyed by Stevie Wonder. They hated the song though.

This group has some of the best GEMS in a body of work. "99" is one of them. These guys are very underrated.
