I remember this shining moment as if it happened yesterday. It’s glorious, as pure a glimpse of humanity as any. Mrs. Frazier represented us beautifully.
I too remember seeing that report on the news when it happened. The joy on Alice's face was priceless and Queen Elizabeth was so gracious about it. Such a special moment in history!!!!
If there is an afterlife I’d like to think that Ms. Frazier (who passed away 17 years before the Queen) once again welcomed Elizabeth warmly and that (now that she’s free of her responsibilities and duties as monarch) they finally got a chance to sit down, enjoy a meal together, and become good friends.
I remember how this incident was described in The New York Times: "A thrill of horror ran through the queen's entourage..." In reality, the Queen took the surprise hug quite naturally. It was clear that protocol was far more important to some others than it was to the Queen. She takes her duties very seriously, but not herself.
I agree. I remember this as well. At the time, the press really tried to make it into some huge faux pas, and now that I’m seeing it again, Queen Elizabeth leaned into the hug and seemed delighted.
As I have said in other posts, you can't hug the Queen, unless you are also a Queen. And Ms. Alice Frazier was certainly a Queen. And too bad that protocol made them miss that meal that Ms. Alice cooked because I'll bet it was something good!
