The Crown Season 4 | Becoming Thatcher | Netflix

In the 1980s, Elizabeth clashes with Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher while Prince Charles enters a tumultuous marriage with Lady Diana Spencer. - Развлечения
Ok Gillian had such a strong presence that even after watching twice, this is the first time I saw Olivia roll her eyes. 🤯
I think that’s a cut from a different part of the scene actually. I could be wrong though.
@@Kalebisms yes you’re correct, she rolls her eyes when thatcher pulls out the newspaper because she (QE2) didn’t want to talk about it but thatcher insisted.
haha they're all fantastic actors the intensity made me angry
Me too 😂
Jemima Khan t o ok Gillian Anderson's husband who created the Crown
All this hair and make up etc, still can't hide how beautiful Gillian is. She is stunning.
In a surprising way, like the woman who plays Anne.
She really is gorgeous.
give her her Emmys, GoldenGlobes, Tonys, Oscars, Grammys, NobelPrize... give her everything
Maravilhosa
Exactly. This interpretation is so sublime and spectacular
Oscars no as meryl streep already slain it in that role, as for the rest she deserved it
*Knighthood
Yes, yes, yes ... 🎶 She's got the whole world in her hands ... 🎶😍😍
She's got the body language perfectly - that cringing walk, the stiffness. Towards the end she even looks frail. Its a whole body performance.
yes a very physical and technical performance unlike most
She really hasn’t. Thatcher didn’t walk like a stiff board like that. She was maybe a little stiff but it’s too over the top. Her mannerisms, breathy voice… it’s all too much, it’s like a caricature rather than an impression.
Physical acting was absolutely stellar!
It was just the voice that didn’t do it for me!
Far too breathy. It really lacked the authority and confidence that Thatcher really exuded.
@@propergander8509 i think she nailed her voice,in her older years after she was prime minister, she sounded quite similar.
I found her scenes more interesting than Princess Diana's.. offcourse no one can potray the perfect diana (it was the best portrayal of diana so far ever) but the scenes in which Gillian ,Margaret Thatcher was present were pretty amazing!
I agree with you. I also found the Iron Lady’s scenes more interesting than Lady Diana’s.
Season 4 wasn't about Diana. Corrin didn't have that much screen time. This season was about Thatcher, the royal and the UK. She was a big deal in the 80s. Season 5 will be about Diana. Her beef with the royal family and especially the paparazzis who led to her death. It's a different actress that's gonna play her in her 30s.
I found Diana annoying
yaass I wanted more of Gillian's Thatcher too!
Diana is cringeworthy here. The real one was so much taller, had so much presence and mammary perfection, a longer, more mature face... I literally couldn’t watch. And here in California her death was like the end of a good TV show. (Dodi was so hot. What a waste.) But I‘m an admirer of the real Mad Prince Charles and his lady love, God bless them. THAT is true love.
She's going to win every tv award going for this performance
Let's hope so, best portrayal I've seen of Margaret thatcher ever, I closed my eyes at times to listen to her, if I didnt know better it was like the old iron lady was still alive!!!
Someone give this damn woman an award for this flawless performance!!totally nailed it!!
if she doesnt..im gonna be sooo pissed
Nah. She overdid it. Love the show, but her performance felt pantomime
@@nickm8874 well the academy has a different opinion
I found the scenes of her character inviting her cabinet members to her house to talk policy and her cooking the dinner/fretting over getting their dinner served to be utterly fascinating. Especially the scene where the men are crowded around the kitchen while she cooks and talks. It was a juxtaposition to the Queen who like her had the power and position yet unlike Thatcher has people running around after her and doing the labour in the background while she concentrates on her duties. It was one of those well done insights into the difference in their class background.
Yeah, and Thatcher being down on her daughter and women in general, saying women can't lead! And yet holding her idiot son in such high regard. A unique worldview.
@@hermioneziggeraut7617 I find this kind of attitude pretty common among women of older generations who were able to achieve something. They see themselves as "unique" and "special" and other women as somehow worse. I know a professor who would talk how she was the first woman hired in her department about 30 years ago and how so many good female scientist were turned down befor her. And now if she has a choice between male and female applicant she would go for male, because women are not "fit for the job".
@@CatriChan It's not surprising, perhaps she was just a token for old-fashioned Tory sentiments. Thatcher seemed comfortable with patriarchy.
I mean the Queen is just a glorified figure head, what duties really lmao
The greatest con is the monarchy convincing the general public that a select few are deserving of living off of the Public’s welfare, in grand castles and estates, with no expense not afforded to them…all on the dime of a commoner…because they were “born” with the right bloodline.
Ridiculous.
In cabinet meetings, she was the alpha male.
Fun fact: Olivia played Thatchers daughter in the Iron Lady.
Ironic
@@itsme-sn5gi The Iron Lady is full of IRONIES. Get? Get it? LOL Knee Slaper.
@@aleisterlavey1001 praying for you
Yess!
And Helena Bonham Carter played the Queen Elizabeth's mother (Elizabeth Bowes Lyon) in The King's Speech.
Gillian brought something unique to Thatcher.
Agreed, I am not even that familiar with Mrs. Thatcher since I’m not from the UK, and I was a child when she was PM, but just that performance and that something unique really fascinated and intrigued me and made me want to learn more
Yes, the uniqueness being turning her to a woman in her 80s, instead of 50s.
@@teologen Nettopp!
100%!
She nailed it! Wow
She is too hot to play Thatcher.
Absolutely 💯
Tchê
neiled? I mean, they made a d¡good character, but she overacted theat voice. Thatcher had a much more energetic tone and vibe overall, even annoying
@@MarioLanzas. no one who ever seen Thatcher in any interview, ever, thinks this is a good performance. To be fair, most decent critics have called Anderson out for this being a laughable interpretation of Thatcher, which it absolutely is, despite what anyone thinks of her, positive or negative. I hate the woman, but this is beyond parody. Has anyone who thinks this is a good performance actually bothered to use the medium they are on to look up Thatcher? It is actually insane how bad and over the top this performance is.
She nailed the voice and body language. Give her an Emmy
Edit. Its great how so many award winning actors have weighed in with their qualified opinion below. They rightfully called out how exaggerated and over the top this terrible performance is! I mean imagine standing so close to people when you talk so that you fit in the frame. Also no one speaks almost entirely in dramatic platitudes without ever umming or stuttering, awful. She didnt even say goodbye when she put down the phone!!! NOT REAAALISTIC tHe rAel MaaRGeT woS nOt lyke thaaaat!
yes humanity
I understand the responses saying her mannerisms were exaggerated, i agree. I think as an acting choice it was the best way to play her as a counterpart to the reserved buttoned up queen. The performance captures her cultural legacy rather than an exact impersonation.
Remember real humans don’t speak in dramatised theatrical dialogue, so you hold your body and tone a little different.
@@seagull8415 It doesn't capture her cultural legacy well. She seems frail and weak in the series, which doesn't capture the "iron lady" very well. Watch her interviews and debates next to the series. It's night and day.
Not at all, you just need to compare to actual footage of Thatcher to see how different they are. She misses the actual accent and just dies a weird husky voice thing. I’m shocked people think it’s good.
I agree wholeheartedly. I disagree with people who thought she was portrayed as too frail. The actress was skinnier than thatcher but she had a strong presence much like thatcher. I challenge them to analyze Claire Foy, Olivia Coleman in the same light. Did she get the mannerisms and such exactly the same? No. That’s certainly not the point and Foy and Coleman brought their own renditions of their royal counterparts to the screen. I thought Anderson’s was absolutely captivating.
I think her Thatcher is even better then Meryl Streep's. She's going to win a golden globe for this for sure.
Netflix UK and Ireland is literally the biggest fan of the crown
Fully agree👍🏾
I agree, I didn’t think the movie as a whole was that great though.
She just won it 👏
I totally agree! Gillian Anderson really studied Thatcher's gestures and mastered them.
I loved the casting of Gillian as Thatcher, she really embodied her personality splendidly, that you'd almost swear that you were watching the real deal! 😻💖
Absolutely incredible job by Anderson! I was shocked by how brilliantly she embodied Thatcher. Many have tried but none have succeeded until now. Hope she wins an award for her performance.
Excuse me? Meryl Streep did an AMAZING job in The Iron Lady
@@91clarie, But Streep is a freak of nature, an unfair comparison.
*meryl streep has entered the chat*
Is there anything Gillian Anderson can't do?
Act
Yes. Playing Margaret Thatcher convincingly. Meryl Streep did a way better job.
@@91clarie Agree. Her performance is hammy.
@@TranslatorTuber It's a caricature. She portrayed Thatcher as some 80 year old lady when Thatcher was only 54 when becoming prime minister. Also she really overdid the accent and pronunciation, none of it sounded natural.
@@91clarie I think hers was a lot better than Meryl’s
Gillian was absolutely glorious. There was a moment in the series where it almost began to feel real. As if this really was Margaret Thatcher and I was watching her years play out in real time. I think if an actor can be so good as to blur the lines between reality and fiction for the viewer, that's how you know the job has been done right.
Well said. Totally agree.
Gillian Anderson is the last person I would have imagined as Maggie... yet she has embodied that character so very well.
She was an absolute triumph in this role.
I didn't recognize Gillian Anderson in the trailer, until I saw her name on the cast. For most actors, you can see the person playing a part. But Gillian Anderson BECAME Thatcher, her acting is so amazing that she stops being herself and becomes someone else - what true acting really is.
Being an X-Files fan and watching her portrayal of Agent Scully, then too see her in The last king of Scotland and now too see her play Maggie, she sure is a skilled actor, she nailed MTs voice, poise, the lot, well played Gillian
What didn’t know that was agent scully
I think she was just incredible. Having watched actual clips of Thatcher from the 70s and 80s, Gillian really got everything perfect!
I will be shocked if she’s doesn’t win an Emmy for this role!
Anderson was bloody brilliant.
Meryl Streep: Oh yeah I did that woman proud
Gillian Anderson: Hold my beer
So true, so true. 👍
Meryl Streep was better though.
Meryl overacted the role, which wasn’t necessarily a good thing
@@shineshine5228 How so? She did a remarkable job, for a moment I believed she was actually Margaret Thatcher. Not to mention the make up and hair was on point, even the teeth.

Gillian Anderson: What a performance!
The part she said she's the older of the two, killed the queen. Lol
She needs an Emmy. No one deserves it more than her!!

You don't have to love Thatcher, but as Gillian brings out, she had strong convictions and backbone. At the same time, the actress also shows her vulnerability and insecurities. It's Oscar-worthy.
But many did and do appreciate Thatcher. The courage and effective are always accused of bring divisive. Same with Churchill.
fuck thatcher
Fuck Reagan. Ans she encouraged him!
Honk if thatchers dead
@@MTknitter22 That’s an incredibly incurious way of looking at things. Dismissing criticism of a politician because people hate “the courage and effective” is very disingenuous. Have you ever in good faith looked into *why* people criticise/dislike Thatcher or Churchill?
Hers was the most impactful role in the whole season. What an amazing performance it was!
I have to say in all my years watching TV, that exchange between the Queen and Margaret Thatcher about making enemies and going on to recite a poem is one of the most thrilling performances I have ever seen. The phenomenal acting performances on both sides, the dialogues and the attacks and disagreements subtly disguised, that is truly an art. People just usually swear at each other 😂
Guess this is Gillian Anderson’s golden time ?
ohhhhhh you should’ve watched the x files, it came out in the 90s and was a big hit, she was so famous back then, those were her golden times

Gillian Anderson really embodied Margaret Thatcher. Give her the Emmy.
Back in the 90s watching the X Files I never thought I would see Agent Scully playing our Iron Lady
A testament to the acting prowess of Gillian Anderson
Yet these days, she is really an honorary Briton
Omg Sculy! When I seen that she was playing her, I doubted her versatility. Needless to say, she NAILED IT!! Incredibly talented woman!
I keep going back to this season just to watch EVERY SCENE thatcher is in! Love her portrayal, and sad it was just for season 4!
She absolutely transforms into thatcher. You forget it's Gillian Anderson.
She also sounds almost british in this interview. As an Australian who lived in the UK for a year in the year Princess Diana died (on my birthday btw)
I sounded English even for about a year after I returned home. I wonder if Gillians voice was strained while in character as thatcher had such a low voice
She is British, she grew up in England and moved to the US but then returned as an adult, she's bidialectal
She was so so good. An amazing actress who deserves an award for her performance. If anyone deserves an award in crown it’s her
Gillian is so freaking good. The acting on this show makes me want to swoon.
Never thought I'd say this - she out performed Meryl Streep. It's a shame this couldn't get an Oscar because if it could, it certainly would.
No one ever says it, but there are plenty of actresses in league with Meryl.
She really did beat her. An unimaginable feat... but it happened nonetheless.
Yeah, she nailed it) She most definitely deserves an Emmy for that. I was impressed by her, never thought of her as of a great actress, but she changed it by playing Tatcher.
She deserves the emmy. I hope she gets it
I will always be shocked at the fact the miners strikes weren’t even mentioned.
Quite the omission. Plus the Brighton bomb. The Crown really has completely glossed over the Troubles, apart from Mountbatten. I guess it's a difficult topic to tackle even now.
@@hermioneziggeraut7617 that is actually very true. I didn’t even remember the Brighton Bombing.
I know everything in the show is meant to filter back to the Queen (which explains why they didn’t really go into the plot to kidnap Anne in the third season) but there’s some big things that just shouldn’t have been ignored.
The season was still FANTASTIC! But the 80s was an incredibly defining time for the UK and to kinda overlook the IRA and the Miners strikes was certainly an odd choice. They definitely could’ve found some way back to the monarchy with those two issues.
I was also hoping Thatcher’s homophobic Clause 28 law would come up as well.
Have a search on line for the 1984 battle of Orgreave (striking miners v South Yorkshire police) and the part the BBC played in editing the film footage to give the impression that the miners had attacked the police.
The camera crew couldn’t have imagined the manipulative editing by the BBC in London to satisfy a Tory government agenda.
They did briefly for a moment. It should have been explored more as that was the defining moment of her first term as PM.
Gillian was indeed marvelous in this role! I was struck literally by her transformation and play.
Gillian has such strong presence in every scene she is in
💯
I watched the entire season in a couple of days and I have to say that Gillian Anderson was absolutely captivating as Thatcher. She had everything down pat. I mean everything. Even the walk was mesmerizing. Dare I say that she was better than Streep and not get scorched. I loved Meryl Streep in "The Iron Lady," but Gillian Anderson's performance was a tour de force. If she doesn't clean up at the Globes and Emmys, it would be a travesty.
I adore Meryl Streep! I've loved every role she has ever played. But even I think that Gillian wins the Margaret Thatcher contest. Meryl's performance as Thatcher has just a touch too much Julia Child in it to feel authentic. Gillian for the win!
I can't wrap my head around the fact that Thatcher and Jean are so different yet so perfect
Amazing. I finished the series only looking forward for thatcher’s scenes. The best portrayal i’ve seen so far.
Definitely, Gillian gave a wonderful performance. Personally, at the time I didn't see Mrs Thatcher so physically frail as the series portrays her. What I can't forget about her in the 80's is her strong and imposing presence, either when she stood at the front door of 10 Downing Street or in Parliament.
I'd love to see a spin off series which focuses on Parliament, and the different Prime Ministers we've had, including Thatcher.
I thought GIllian Anderson did such a marvelous rendition of the late prime minister. The two particular scenes that were extremely convincing were: 1.) her weeping in private and 2.) the humiliation of arriving early to dinner with the queen. These ingratiating experiences translated effectively and were quite relatable.
What an actor - Gillian Anderson is superb and makes everything she touches better.
Absolutely beautiful performance without making it a caricature. Marvellous! Congratulations to the entire production team and Thank You!
She did the best job and I don’t think of another name in this industry who could do it better. Unbelievable role, oscar needed !
I love her so much. Cate Blanchett could do it better, Nicole Kidman or Julianne Moore as well - three of the most remarkable actors we have.
She could even get an Oscar for this but it's not a movie. Unfortunately, Oscars are for movies 😢
Anderson did an absolutely fantastic job with this. Utterly correct.
Her role so well played! Amazingly true talent caught in its entirety! Well done Gillian I truly enjoyed watching you act 😍
I thought Gillian Anderson was extremely good, it was like she was unrecognisable.
I’ve loved her for years she is an underrated brilliant actor glad she was finally given an opportunity such as this to show off her amazing acting and she will be cast in more movies or series.

Loved this season but wish there was more of the Thatchers in it. Although obviously, it is called The Crown so... it is about The Crown!
Hope NF at least think about a spinoff for this version of Thatcher.
For good or bad she was a titan of world history and I would love to watch a series focused on her time in office.
Wouldn't that be grand? Thatcher's life and career are as consequential as Pope John Paul II -- and far more important than anything Reagan ever did.
Gillian Anderson did a sublime job, I thought she was good before but this season made me appreciate how great she truly is. The first time I absolutely disliked her, and that immersion was full credit to that high quality acting combined with her own attention to detail

I enjoyed her performance so much that I wanted more of the Thatcher Era though The Crown, of course, is central theme! It felt historically too compacted!
You'll need at least 3 seasons to cover Thatcher's era. That was not even a glympse of that. They tried their bests to to cram in the royals into the story line.
A majestic and spectacular interpretation, Gillian Anderson 👏🏻👏🏻
