This is the absolute best time in history to be a backlog gamer. Physical and digital sales make it so easy to catch up on anything you missed. New releases are expensive and ship unfinished. Enjoy your library and save so much money instead.

I feel bad for young gamers today. Being a child/teen in the 80s/90s, it was non-stop and amazing. Every 4 years was a new system, new games and new advances. And each console generation was a MASSIVE leap. There were always 'can't miss' launch titles only available on the new hardware. Always new and novel types of gameplay. If you were one of the lucky ones to get your hands on the newest, you were the envy of every kid in the neighborhood or class. Nowadays kids play the same game for years, like my nieces and Roblox or nephew and Spiderman. Most games are the same: 3rd-person action w/ RPG elements. Gaming is really in a rut the past 10 years.

This 💯. I don't buy many games normally, but I haven't even felt the urge to buy a game in years. After seeing everything turn into a "live service" and then get abandoned the moment they aren't making money on it I stopped supporting many publishers. On top of that, games that get dragged out for no reason, like FF7 Remake, hurt people too. I waited years for that game.....only for it to not even finish the story of the first disc of a than 25+ year old game. And they want me to pay 60 plus own the new system to play roughly to the end of the old disc 1? Nah. I will just play the original

    • @kendrickaugillardjr9081

I believe the shortage of games is the reason for this live service crap, companies spent too much to make these consoles and since everything is going to crap their looking for a way to make that money back. Had they delayed the launch and waited until they had the man power to create the games, the consoles themselves would've had a good foundation to start on.

So even with the weak power of the Switch, their games still look great while they are super cheap and take very little time to be made. To be frank, a new console is supposed to play games that can't be played on last gen due to technical limitations. And in past, graphical fidelity of games grew so fat that every srveral years you needed a new console to keep playing newest games.
But we are reaching a ceiling of graphical quality. Once, two games released 3 years apart looked vastly different, but today a 10 years old game doesn't look much worse than tbe newest game.

I think it’s what your standards are and if you think it justifies the cost. Because while i agree the boost in performance makes a big difference, it’s fair to say we should have higher standards to motivate companies to do more. When paying $500 to upgrade to a new system, the boost in performance for some people should be a given and expected. That’s the case for most previous gen upgrades where we got a boost in performance and visuals IN ADDITION to many new quality games. This time around there’s the boost in performance but the visuals are improved but honestly it’s less of a leap than previous upgrades, which does make sense because as technology gets more advanced it becomes more difficult to see the difference graphically. I guess my point is, if someone told me to buy a brand new system for $500 just to play old games that will perform much better, I’d say that is awesome but not fully worth $500. If it was around $300, then maybe. Now I know it’s not that black and white so I’m not implying the PS5 should be $300 because there has been some good titles that’s been released, but this is just my overall opinion.

That's it. I'm not expecting much truly 'new' and a lot of people will likely be quite disappointed, despite Rockstar sticking to proven formulae and knowing what works.
A lot of today's AAA games are just graphical tech demos from the same franchises, released on a regular cadence and with very little true innovation. We're told that having an enormous map filled with pointless side quests is "immersive" - if I want to wash my car, or walk my dog, or go fishing, or run someone else's errands, I can do that in real life. Gaming is supposed to be fun, an escape, something different.

The problem aren't PS4 and Xbox One. The problem is that 9th gen was POINTLESS.
If you want a gaming PC get a PC to play 120fps 4K etc. PS4 to this date has enough processing power for any developer that doesn't need to make you see the porus and nose hair of your first person character model. Most indies and smaller titles have enough power. The magical SSD was a lie and a PS4 could run Rift Apart at mid graphics 1080p
Why they keep the 8th gen alive? Because it's still usable and unless you're a graphics SNOB. Gaming REALISM peaked in 8th gen. RED DEAD REDEMPTION 2 is a PS4 and XB One game. 9th gen just exists to COMPETE against PCs.

Yet, Godzilla Minus 1 looked amazing and cost like $5 bucks to make. If I owned a studio I would definitely review how we are spending our money. Nintendo seems to have the right formula. Make a ton of AA games to fill in gaps between the AAA releases. Optimize the hell out of your games and stay within a reasonable budget. Going back to Marvel, some of the original movies looked better than the ones now. Makes no sense.

The next generation will be no different. Anyone who buys a PlayStation or Xbox next generation is a fool and deserves to be disappointed.

This is why I don't get excited for games anymore. Do you know how many games I was hyped for that turned out to be awful at launch? It's so disappointing. Another thing, and this is more of an indie game problem, I have contributed to kickstarters that ended up not being what they promised or just straight up got cancelled. I am over it.

This generation was essentially just PS4 and Xbox One games but in 4k 60. Hoping next generation brings some actual advancements. The difference between my PS4 Pro and PS5 is definitely one of the smallest console leaps ever. Plus it doesn't help either that practically all games are still coming out on this gen and previous gen. I am slightly worried we've hit a plateau as a whole with video games. Plus developers are trying way to hard to make each game last for years and years but in reality its just making them bland and boring. So many games are built with so much aimless filler now.

The other thing you did not list is the fact all the major developers want to make cash cow multiple player co op games that become a constant renewable revenue stream. The single player campaign is mostly dead in tripe A gaming. Most single player campaign games are double A Independent studios releasing to all platforms for maximum market saturation.

Facts! I said this 2yrs ago. I got the ps5 on release date , and honestly I use it more to charge my phone than to play games. I just miss the gaming days of the 2000s with exclusives and games were actually FUN

That’s one expensive phone charger, but the real reason I’m here is to tell you how glad I am that you know the difference between “then” and “than”. So many people use “then” when they should use “than”, and vice versa.

The lack of dedicated support for these consoles is because mainstream gamers have rejected moving to 9th generation consoles. A mid-gen hardware refresh might convince them to upgrade. But with the layoffs around the industry, this may just be the beginning of a small crash in videogaming. Better luck in 10th gen.
I've been a PC gamer, but ironically PS5 is the first console I've purchased since the 6th gen.
And again, the narrative that 2023 was gaming's best year for new releases. All you have to do to dispel this nonsense is to look at releases from 15 or 20 years ago, and see how few of 2023's games will ever be remembered as fondly.

You're a bit wrong though, is not the console generation tech that's bad, but the game quality released by big publishers we knew and loved.
Now we just get remastered games and some really incomplete and bad games, the tech is there but publishers just want cash grabs and online games with a bunch of ridiculous in game purchases, gaming is there publishers aren't.
Publishers have become a GTA radio joke.
