Being colored, and emo. I appreciate the guy in the interview speaking up for us in an alternative community. Like some people try and tell us we cant be a certain thing because we're not white. Thanks for this interview.
Just laugh at them for not knowing who Bad Brains or Ho99o9 are, though the second ones are relatively new in the scene. This is some high level of ignorance. And don’t let me start with the tribe cultures which imo are pretty goth by nature.
I can't even fully express how glad I am Anthony brought him on. I'm a black goth/revived-emo and as soon as I saw his community post about doing this video I commented "please bring a person of color on, representation is so important" and I'm so happy he came through. I didn't even really need to hear it, as I don't give two shits about people's opinion on the way I dress anymore, but hearing him just give reassurance for potential black goths "...there was a black person in The Cure. One of the most goth bands ever has a fucking black person in there. So just tell the person to fuck off" just made me like jump up and yell "YES!"
Warm Soft Kitty wow that’s crazy, I’ll let all the other alive and thriving punks know and I’ll go ahead and tell all my decent successful local bands to go ahead and hang up their guitars and drumsticks 👍🏼
Warm Soft Kitty if you can’t find them it’s because they don’t want you to 😅 if you think they’re only in seedy night clubs you aren’t looking in the right places. Punk has always been a subculture, wouldn’t really make sense if it was in any mainstream media now would it?
While I do accept that death is a part of life, forgive me for this, but I feel that too much positivity towards the subject is a slippery slope that can lead to-I don’t want my comment to get deleted. Idk, tho. I’m fine with the goth subculture, but I disagree with that line of thought. I’m too optimistic and love life too much to think that way if you know what I mean
I was so scared this was gonna be a bunch of eboys and egirls who listen to lil peep, but you actually found real goths who listen to real goth music. Thank you, sir.
Please do “I spent a day with people with deadly food allergies!” There is such a lack of awareness in all the ways this effects your life. How poor the restaurant standards are. How expensive and inaccessible life saving Epi pens are. Etc!
Ouuu great idea! Several of my friends have deadly food allergies (some just one - as I do, others have multiple) and friends of friends have experienced anaphylaxis from just being in the same room as certain foods (peanuts & shellfish) which really blew my mind! Could rant on and on about this 😅
YES! I have a lot of fatal food allergies to things like nuts, chocolate, coconut etc, and going to any restaurant is helL when the staff treat you like the problem just for having a medical requirement. I think this would be such an informative episode since it's such a common yet under-discussed issue!
YES. my brother recently discovered (like a year ago) deathly allergies to a lot of things that are literally EVERYWHERE, for example onion, after an attack that nearly killed him because he couldn't breathe and people around him didn't know what to do (he was out eating with his friends).
Nice! 🖤🖤🖤 I'm 45 and I consider myself a goth since my 17! I was sooo sad when I saw the goth movement gradually disappear, mostly with the arrival of the Yo fashion mouvements (like rap, hip-hop, techno) but, thankfully, it's still pretty alive in countries like Germany . I think it would have been interesting to mention all the different goth styles (hardcore, victorian/romantic, steampunk, cyberpunk, pagan goth, rainbow goth...) and the different feels that go with each of them, like different facets of a prism. I like all of them and have cloths of all these styles. ;) The music bands and styles they mentioned in the video were right (and I love those bands) but they forgot to mention electo industrial goth music! Here is my definition of what it is being goth. I would like to have your view on that and maybe you can modify or add some elements to my definition: Being goth is having a fascination for the occult and the unknown, a desire to question what we have been taught and seek for the truth, an open mindness (trying to gather more info before judging), a respect for nature and a need to exteriorize one's sensuality and inner darkness freely but in a healthy, pacific way. -Sorry for my english and if I sound weird: my mother tongue is French. Xx
Cameleonfleuri - that’s like me! I mix styles. I do lots of research, know the differences, etc. I am proud to be a goth. I’m just sad I can’t go to my thrift stores and other goth stores right now to add to my collection I’m growing out of and the confusion dropped into it from family.
You don't have to look Goth to be Goth. That is one stereotype many people have. And also, some of us Goth's are in our 30's and 40's now, and life is busy, and we just don't have the time or energy anymore.
When suzy talked about the trend of wanting a Goth gf i felt that Im still what the comunity calls a baby bat, and i dated a guy who wanted a goth gf but he would often tell me to "tone the goth down" He literally just wanted me in fishnets and forget about the music i hear, the things i love or how do i want to present myself" I was just seen as "the hot goth gf of XXX" and it was depressing
literally it's just fetishising and making goth a sexual thing when it's like us it's like our life 😂 its not just a costume they gotta realise if they're gonna have a goth gf they need to accept it all
I literally hate how sexualized fishnets are... all of my exes were initially interested in me because of the fishnets, almost made me feel like they wouldn't like me without them. I love them so much as a fashion piece tho!
jess dude Tyler is one of my friends from Cali, last time I saw him was last year in August, he’s such a cool dude to hang out with, we went out for goth ice cream downtown LA, which is basically vanilla ice cream but colored black and it’s so tasty.
It still depends on whether the people accept or not to do the interviews, i wouldnt think it to be Bad if he didnt managed to interview a more diverse people.
9:24 Btw, that was Andy Anderson. He played drums for a few years in the Cure. Sadly, he passed away in 2019, but the Cure paid tribute to him during their 2019 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Feel like these aesthetically aren’t the most “goth people”, but it goes to show that goths don’t have to conform to stereotypes and wear all black and have black dyed hair,
Hell yeah Stella. I'm an old goth and can't be assed dressing up anymore so her saying it's all about the music warmed my little black heart. I can still sit and listen to The Cure in my comfy jeans and comfy hoodie and be goth at heart.
Golden rules of goth: If you don't listen to the music then you're not goth. And you are never allowed to be one of us again if you constantly shit on people for not being pale enough.
Can you spend a day with surgeons? Because I’m curious whether or not they wanted to go into the medical field or their parents pushed them to? Or if they feel like a minority in the medical world? And stuff like that, thank you if you read or like 💙
Ive heard more bad things about surgeons than any other part of the medical field. Like some of my friends think they're like jocks who think are better than everyone else. Although, I don't completely disagree with them because some that do go into it clearly have some serious control issues (like they like having power over someone life type of thing) BUT from experience I know that some are kind and just want to do the most they can to save lives. Lol some did it because their parents made them. Regardless, it's def. A field where passion needs to be present somehow or another to get through it.
BlackMetal Berry i had this in school too 🤣 girls used to shout “do you cut yourself” down the hall at me all the time. That was like 20 years ago, does this still happen now? 😬

Love the video and all 3 of them are awesome but "Goth is expensive" is just plain wrong. I've made so many outfits from thrifted clothes, old clothes from my wardrobe, sales at gothic stores, scraps of fabric, ripped tights, or simply sewing my own dresses etc. There are a thousand possibilities, you just have to get creative! In my opinion the more individuality you pour into your outfit, the greater it looks :)

so glad suzy brought up the "big tiddy goth gf" issue! in the past year i've had to deal with way more gross comments from guys about wanting a big tiddy goth gf, or then seeing people who just have thick eyeliner and dark lipstick being called goth gfs. shit's wack yo. @ my fellow goth gals i love y'all and take care
@@msunder0115 it.. isn't a fetish? it's a music subculture and lifestyle?? i also highly doubt you'd have a chance with any goth, so keep your gross objectification away from us :)
I'm not goth but hearing "Hell yeah, Dad!" In that context hit in a bittersweet kinda way since I don't speak to mine anymore. Love hearing that someone's got such a good relationship with their dad
From what I know, goths aren't really violent. Metalheads I could see being stereotyped as the latter. Still a very stereotypical and generally inaccurate statement, but I feel like metalheads are the most likely of the spooky kids to throw hands. xD I would imagine Emo to be more like "everything sucks and I'm going to wallow in my feels" while Goth would be more "I find the beauty in the macabre of this wretched world"
@@TheKarret Emos are not especially pessimistic, just really connected to their feelings and true about them. In the good times just as much as in the bad times.
abt the whole "its expensive to be goth" thing, it doesnt have to be! i cut and dye my own hair, i thrift, ive made my own patches, ive owned many of the same clothes for years, and i dont buy lots of new stuff. being goth, again, is mainly about liking the music--which these days is pretty accessible--but even if you want to dress the part DIY is a good route to go and it goes all the way back to the roots. goth is for everyone!
i literally thought the SAME thing most of my stuff is thrifted then customized, and I was so mad about it I went looking up his outfit, his Docs: 150. The bag: 45. Jeans from PACSUN (that is on the expensive side) are 49.95 and there inst tax, but let us round that to 50 even. And those are plain black jeans like his. a normal battle vest is about 45. Those add up to 290.So he is saying his pins and patches cost him over 300?? I work at hottopic, and I can tell you that isn't true. they are 1.99 for pins and 3-6 for patches. AND there is always a sale, so lets again be generous and say he has 5 patches on his vest, that is 30 (not to mention there is LITERALLY always a buy two get on on pin patches and stickers,,,,) and he has 8 visible normal buttons, so lets round to 10 to be safe, that is 19.90, so 20. 3 visible enamel pins, so lets round to 5, (those are 5-7) 35$. Patches and pins alone are only $85. That all together is 375. And that is assuming he didn't use ANY kind of hotcash or points (since we are also assuming he is shopping at hottopic, which I believe he did I recognize those pins) So where is the extra 225 that he spent? I am not in ANY way calling him out or anything, I am just saying if he DID spend that much he was ripped off.
You also don't have to be very good at DIY stuff to do goth, there are a lot of things you can do that don't take much skill and can make your clothes way cooler. You'll pick skills up as you go too.
Yes yes yes. We are children of the anti-capitalist no money DIY clothing punk scene. If you didn’t pick it up in a thrift shop somewhere for pennies it’s not your own style. I only ever spend real money on corsets and shoes. Everything else is EBay, charity shop finds or handed down the community.
I needed this video. I'm a betrayer, a former goth who wanted to know if the culture still exists, and after watching a couple of videos of goths I thought it had become an aesthetic, some sort of hipster lifestyle, defined by goth hauls, buying stuff and that's it. I'm so glad that it's still considered a music based culture and I also loved all the kids here.
oh my god I was thinking the whole time: "gosh that Suzy woman seems so familiar but where the heck do I know her from???" until I read this comment and I finally remembered she's Arin's wife
As for what I enjoy most about being goth, getting to enjoy all of my interests in vampires, death, the music, the clothing, the look, “scary” stuff, the humour, the art and the literature is just SO much fun! I also do love the looks and the aesthetic as well.
Poop Mclovin I’m sure he would be accepting had he lived to the modern era. Both appreciate the darker sides of life and can see the beauty in it. Poe would be considered Gothic if he wrote poetry today.
Having been a goth nearly for 18 years, I must say the babybats I've had the privilege of meeting in the last couple years are one of my favorite parts of the current scene. Right along with all the new bands, ya'll are keeping the culture alive. Granted I've done dozens of interviews on my podcast, but this video confirms goth is alive and well and in good hands.
Hi Daniel I'm a fan of your podcast! I would like to see at least one person older being interviewed here but it was still great. I wouldn't call them babybats though, they seem to have past this stage.
@@DafniKem I think that's an interesting discussion to have actually. Where do we draw the line for what we consider a babybat, because someone coming into the scene today has much faster and far reaching access to information than I did as a teen, so what qualities makeup the conception of a babybat? Does that term even make sense to use anymore is another relevant question; do goths still place value on assigning levels of respect to other members based on time in the scene, dedication, knowledge, participation etc. Is the idea of trading in cultural capital accrued through some subculturally normative means in return for respect and recognition still relevant or do we work under different assumptions now? Anyway, thanks for listening!
@@CemeteryConfessions As a late millennial (soon 26) I started having an interest in the subculture around 2006-07, and social media and the internet was much more limited then. I was a mall-goth and I had a brief "emo phase" before I discovered actual goth music, which I loved immediately. I stopped considering myself a "babybat" (never used that word then, though) when I realized I knew more about goth than people I used to think that were goths. I believe that time, experience, dedication and consistency are very important and are (and should be) very much valued and appreciated amongst us. One of the reasons we use the term babybat for the newcomers is not only because of their lack of knowledge about the scene, but also to describe the period of time they have been (and stuck) in the scene. And this is because we know for some people, especially in their angsty teens, it really is just a phase, so we are sceptical towards them, because they haven't "proven" their dedication yet. That's my opinion from my personal experiences in my local scene. I would like to see a discussion about this on the podcast, I'm curious what others think on that!
I’m goth and something that I HATE is everyone expecting us to be depressed, like yeah some of us are but not everyone. Like if I was to openly say that I’m goth to my friends at school rumours would fly around about me being depressed and evil and so on, it annoys me.
Please do "I spent a day with ATHEISTS ". I'm going through a rough patch where I'm figuring out if I'm an atheist or agnostic and it would be really nice if I could hear about other's experiences and how they got through it. I would be very touched if you covered this topic not just for me, but for others too.
@ Yeah I think it would be really interesting to explore the reasons why they don't label themselves as atheists and the scepticism they have about both theism and atheism.
Not sure if this will help, but I'll give you my reason for identifying as agnostic instead of atheist. For me, I don't have any faith and faith has no place in my life. I cannot say that a creator exists or doesn't exist because I have never seen it myself. To me, atheism does require faith because it determines that there cannot be a creator. I respect people of all religions but religion is not for me, even if it's just a faith in there being no creator
Yeep I'm an atheist, when I was little my family forced me to go to church and pray everyday, then I started seeing how stupid it all was, when I saw on the history books, scientists being silenced by religion, the intolerance and discrimination, also it blinds it's followers, I thought I was going to hell for sure cuz I sinned multiple times, but its entirely based on beliefs(lies, imo), so yeah there's no god fuck god
This is super refreshing to hear the way they speak about death. Most people assume everyone is scared of death but I have never been scared of it. I remember being fascinated with horror storied an as a teen I've been interested in what happens after death. I want to know everything so I am attracted to the mystery of death (not that I would kill myself or kill someone)
I miss this old type of content. Its gotten so bizarre. Basically just symptom based diagnostic terms that anyone can act like they suffer from. Literally where half of the comments are like “I have this too! Even though it’s incredibly rate!” Such a strange world we are living in.
This interview was on point and a great choice of people interviewed that are actively authentic goths. I definitely want to be friends with Tyler and also the other people interviewed. Also @Anthony Padilla your default outfit in this episode was definitely a good goth style outfit.
really glad to see the emphasis being placed on the music, I was pretty worried that part would get left out like it does in a lot of videos by non goth people.
@Kayla Maria Some recs- Nosferatu, Corpus Delecti, Skeletal Family, The Danse Society, London After Midnight, Virgin Prunes and more. There are so many good ones 😆
Please do an “I spent a day with Cybergoths” to follow up this one. I had recently watched another video about how they have been rejected from both the goth AND raver communities. You don’t really see a lot of people who identify with this nowadays. And I feel like there’s still some mystery to that one viral video.
Well as the goths in the video said, being goth means that you listen to goth music. There's no such thing, however, as cybergoth music so technically, cybergoth isn't goth at all. The correct term to describe alternative, dark, mysterious things is "gothic," which is separate from the music subgenre. That's probably why they are rejected; they're not cybergoths, they're cybergothic.
Reminder that goth fashion does not have to be expensive!! At the beginning of the subculture, most clothing and accessory items were thrifted or diy-ed, even to this day :))
I'm so happy that Anthony actually found goth people who listen to the music and the first thing they've all said is the music genre. I feel like most people treat it like a fashion style and not a music based culture. I'm not trying to gatekeep, I'm the first person in line that listens to tons of other kinds of music other than goth, but if a culture is based off the music, it's pretty much essential.
3:45 oh in my culture, māori culture, we usually have open caskets and they're placed in sometimes a marae or most times now their house and it's usually for 3/4 days. The person/body isn't aloud to be alone during that time. You usually pray, sing songs, tell memories about them, etc during that time. Then most times after you're buried and go back to the land, to papatūānuku, sometimes you can be cremated, but that is quite tapu (spiritually restricted, bad). But whether someone is buried or cremated is usually decided by the person who's passed, or the family. That's a tangihanga in a nutshell.
Sounds good enough. In our culture being cremated is considered good because that cuts off your only tie to the physical world (the medium of communication) i.e.. Your body

@Mia Ramos the goth guy that was interviewed

I love the girl talking so kindly of death. I really appreciate seeing people who accept death as a normal part of life
Well I don't understand why anyone wouldn't, it is a normal part of life
While I do accept that death is a part of life, forgive me for this, but I feel that too much positivity towards the subject is a slippery slope that can lead to-I don’t want my comment to get deleted.
Idk, tho. I’m fine with the goth subculture, but I disagree with that line of thought. I’m too optimistic and love life too much to think that way if you know what I mean

Please do “I spent a day with people with deadly food allergies!”
There is such a lack of awareness in all the ways this effects your life. How poor the restaurant standards are. How expensive and inaccessible life saving Epi pens are. Etc!
Fee Fromkin yes
omg YES. People actually believe we make up our allergies bc we're picky. like really??
I’m a proud elder Goth (42 this May) and I’ve been a Goth since I was 14. I’ve been this way and will never change.
I like all of them and have cloths of all these styles. ;)
The music bands and styles they mentioned in the video were right (and I love those bands) but they forgot to mention electo industrial goth music!
Here is my definition of what it is being goth. I would like to have your view on that and maybe you can modify or add some elements to my definition:
Being goth is having a fascination for the occult and the unknown, a desire to question what we have been taught and seek for the truth, an open mindness (trying to gather more info before judging), a respect for nature and a need to exteriorize one's sensuality and inner darkness freely but in a healthy, pacific way.

Ive heard more bad things about surgeons than any other part of the medical field. Like some of my friends think they're like jocks who think are better than everyone else. I feel like Emos are more "dark and pouty" whereas Goths are "I'm not afraid to punch you while I'm crying"
I feel like you got it switched
Yeah but it's more about the music
From what I know, goths aren't really violent. Metalheads I could see being stereotyped as the latter. Still a very stereotypical and generally inaccurate statement, but I feel like metalheads are the most likely of the spooky kids to throw hands. xD
I would imagine Emo to be more like "everything sucks and I'm going to wallow in my feels"
while Goth would be more "I find the beauty in the macabre of this wretched world"
@@TheKarret Emos are not especially pessimistic, just really connected to their feelings and true about them.
In the good times just as much as in the bad times.
@@YouTearMyHeart Ah. Well, the "wallow in my feels" part is still accurate.
abt the whole "its expensive to be goth" thing, it doesnt have to be! i cut and dye my own hair, i thrift, ive made my own patches, ive owned many of the same clothes for years, and i dont buy lots of new stuff. being goth, again, is mainly about liking the music--which these days is pretty accessible--but even if you want to dress the part DIY is a good route to go and it goes all the way back to the roots. goth is for everyone!
kade b exactly what i was thinking!
i literally thought the SAME thing most of my stuff is thrifted then customized, and I was so mad about it I went looking up his outfit, his Docs: 150.
I prefer to walk through tar to really get the darkest aesthetic I can. It’s quick and easy. Cheap? Depends on where you are.

Right? It's mostly American culture, where everyone's scared of death. Though they used to picnic in cemeteries about a century and some change ago.

@@tylerpretorius1339 awww thank you so much! That's so kind of you!
I love Suzy’s makeup. That’s my favorite way to apply eyeliner in the cat eye/Arabian style 😍🖤

As an agnostic, I'd love to see an episode on this! Great suggestion!
yessss please either atheists or agnostics would be awesome
Every time that guy comes on the screen all I can look at is that doll on his sweet jacket
This is super refreshing to hear the way they speak about death. Most people assume everyone is scared of death but I have never been scared of it. This video has made me realize I’m goth, because I love the cure and joy division. My heart is warm 🖤
Did you dig deeper for more bands? I ask because I like giving people recommendations.
@Kayla Maria Some recs- Nosferatu, Corpus Delecti, Skeletal Family, The Danse Society, London After Midnight, Virgin Prunes and more. There are so many good ones 😆
pls pls the next "I spent a day with" would be with PUNKS!!!
ED THE ONLY yess
YES
Please do an “I spent a day with Cybergoths” to follow up this one. I had recently watched another video about how they have been rejected from both the goth AND raver communities. You don’t really see a lot of people who identify with this nowadays. And I feel like there’s still some mystery to that one viral video.
Mia Boatright this is a good idea but I feel like other subgenres might want their own video lol
I'm a graver :| sup
@@novemberr.8600 what's that?
@@darkentriesx a goth in the rave community. I'm not sure I'm cyber gothic but black and neon pink is definitely my thing.
I didn’t know Suzy was in this video! I literally screamed when she came up
NessTheAlien same my dude
Literally same. I saw her tweet saying like “oh I should do this” but I didn’t know she went through with it. Love her.
Yeah!!
KittyKatGaming!!
Same omg i love her!!! And i love game grumps😆❤
Literally same
I watch game grumps SO OFTEN! I never new that suzy was goth! I feel like, since arin and dan tell SO MANY STORIES arin had to have talked about this.
I'm not a goth myself but i honestly love goths and goth-like aesthetics/series etc. i can't explain it.
This goth approves! I especially like that Stella talked about how important the music is and that a goth of color was represented!
CarolineCarnivorous thank you!!
Big tiddy goth gf plz
I'm so happy the music was touched on here. I'm sad I wasn't able to be apart, but I'm glad this didn't flop.
Reminder that goth fashion does not have to be expensive!! At the beginning of the subculture, most clothing and accessory items were thrifted or diy-ed, even to this day :))
When I saw Suzy's face, when I tell you when I screamed.
Why?
Same.
@@tdfhj8gfyhtxmut769 I love Suzy. She's just an amazing person and I was so excited to see that she was on here.
Literally me. I would of sued Anthony if he didn't bring Suzy. And I screamed when I heard Arin in the background.
Anthony: DISNEY PRETTY GOTH THOUGH
Me: Visibly triggered for Studio Laika
Glad I wasn't the only one who noticed that!
Your body
Which in turn allows easier passage of the soul to the spiritual world
