  • The most often asked questions I receive are related to finishing. While there are as many opinions on finishing as there are turners, this video explains the process I use to achieve a quality finish on my pieces.

Very good demo! Did you purchase the “tube” that connected to the motor used in your buffing system? It seemed really slick and convenient.

Thank you for sharing your finishing tips.
I haven't tried Seal-A-Cell but I use homemade danish oil or sometimes Watco. I have better luck wet sanding using thinned danish oil, especially on open grain woods. The slurry helps fill the pores and makes for a smoother finish. It also takes care of raised grain. After about three coats, I use 0000 steel wool and apply a few more thin coats. Just before the final coat, I use the white Scotch Brite pads. Depending on the shine you want, fewer coats make for a more matte finish but you can put on 5-8 thin coats for a more glossy look.
I've also found it best to let the finish get close to a full cure before buffing which can take 3-4 weeks for typical danish oil.
No doubt many woodworkers and turners can make nice pieces but the end result of the finish separates the best from the rest. It's mostly about patience and attention to detail. If people only knew how much time a great finish takes. Penetrating oils just can't be beaten for bringing out the full beauty of the wood.
Thanks again for sharing and letting me give you some details on how I approach it.
    Happy turning!
