Vacuum Stabilization and Resin Casting for Woodturners
This video covers the basics of preparing blanks using vacuum stabilization and casting resin for woodturning applications. In addition to coving materials the video includes a step by step process to create a hybrid blank used to turn a set of nested bowls. This presentation was provided as a virtual demonstration to the Woodturners Guild of North Carolina on August 12, 2021.
Materials include Cactus Juice, Alumilite Clear Slow, Alumilite Deep Pour, Hunter Tools, TurnTex, Liquid Diamonds, Total Boat Penetrating Epoxy

Achieving a Gallery Quality Finish on Woodturnings

The most often asked questions I receive are related to finishing. While there are as many opinions on finishing as there are turners, this video explains the process I use to achieve a quality finish on my pieces. #woodturning #woodworking #Finishing

Very good demo! Did you purchase the “tube” that connected to the motor used in your buffing system? It seemed really slick and convenient.
Thanks for taking the time to do this, very interesting..
Very creative and informative. Combining the router with the lathe created another depth to the work you did. Thank you for sharing the knowledge.
what did you use for a seal surface on the pvc !! That info would be helpful !
thank you sir
Was about to build a jig to support router when this popped up, more ideas to consider tks.
Can’t find contact info to purchase the Dual Axis Router Jig. Can someone help me out? It looks like an awesome addition to my options.
He says uhhm 113 times in this video. Like uhhm so uhhm and uhhm sometimes uhh but lots of uhhm.
Dilettantic work on the PVC plastic tubes!
You have explained the Rotary Vein Pump (Drehschieberpumpe) in a wrong way! The Rotation is clockwise. At the right side is the suction side: vacuum connector! Der Rotor rotiert nach rechts , dort ist auch die Ansaugseite!! Best wishes!
As Spock would say, this is fascinating captain. Unique, and fascinating.
Where can I find the flute master?
Thank you very much - very informative video!
Watched this video today (09/16/23), is the creator monitoring/answering questions (one of the questions suggested otherwise, that this person retired?)
Looks like it. The one part he missed was how to seal the vacuum pipe into the hole in wooden base, whilst allowing it to remain stationary, i.e. not rotating when the chuck revolves. However I found an easy way on another video, which used a small ball race epoxied into the wooden base, with the pipe epoxied into inner bearing 😊
Great video. Have a vac. Pump and liked all the basic and advanced tips. Learned some more details of how to improve my system.
Muito bom... Parabéns

Steve will your homemade vac chucks work with the Hold Fast System?
Very detailed review. Thanks for info on router bit sizes. Great 👍
Looks like you were cutting above center while cutting the grooves? You drew a center line to match the center of the lathe and then move over 1” on both sides of center to cut both grooves? Is this correct? A beautiful bowl and excellent video. Thanks
Great video! Ive been wanting a vacuum chuck for awhile. i decided on the Frugal. i called him today to find out hes retired from the business. back to the drawing board for me.
May I request (respectfully) that you change the title of this video? It is marketed as being about vacuum chucking but this is not discussed until 13-1/2 mins in (35%). It is actually a video on mounting pieces to finish the bottoms. Thanks.
A very interesting demo Steve, thank you for taking the time to show us.
Wow! Where have you been. Just found it. Love this video. Great job. Thanks
Really good information. Your knowledge, experience and recommendations satisfied all of my questions.
What type of oil does the vane pump use?
Thanks for sharing, enjoyed it, actually it's my second watching.
Thanks for sharing, enjoyed it.
Thanks for the video. I pretty much just copied your vacuum setup. Gast pump on wall and all. Works exceptionally well.
This was a woderful pair of videos, so glad to have seen this!
Steve, Can I use a quarter inch inside diameter hose? Does a larger diameter hose work better?
Thanks a lot for this video. It is very informative.
I wonder if a rotary tool with a fine burr bit would leave a better cut quality
Thanks Steve. That's two excellent videos on vacuum chucking. I had been thinking of buying a thread cutting jig as my next step forward but I'm I'm thinking that this will have a lot more regular uses.
Thank you for sharing your finishing tips. I haven't tried Seal-A-Cell but I use homemade danish oil or sometimes Watco. I have better luck wet sanding using thinned danish oil, especially on open grain woods. The slurry helps fill the pores and makes for a smoother finish. It also takes care of raised grain. After about three coats, I use 0000 steel wool and apply a few more thin coats. Just before the final coat, I use the white Scotch Brite pads. Depending on the shine you want, fewer coats make for a more matte finish but you can put on 5-8 thin coats for a more glossy look. I've also found it best to let the finish get close to a full cure before buffing which can take 3-4 weeks for typical danish oil. No doubt many woodworkers and turners can make nice pieces but the end result of the finish separates the best from the rest. It's mostly about patience and attention to detail. If people only knew how much time a great finish takes. Penetrating oils just can't be beaten for bringing out the full beauty of the wood. Thanks again for sharing and letting me give you some details on how I approach it. Happy turning!
Very didactic presentation -- really appreciated!
what type of adapter should I use for my powermatic 3520a
Beautiful work
At 22:45, is there any reason you aren't cutting a groove in the far side of the platter at the same time? That would eliminate half of the indexing.
Can deep pour be turned as easily as clear slow? Good info, thanks.
Very informative. Subscribed 👍🏽😊
Steve, what was the name of the company that you mentioned for the vacuum chuck system
In situations where there is not a centre mark to reference, I use a spindle adapter (sold by Oneway) on my Oneway live centre so I can mount my chucked workpiece on the tailstock and bring it up to the vacuum chuck. Once the vacuum is established I can release the workpiece from the chuck and remove the tailstock.
were helpful thanks for sharing the video stay safe
Time for a 4-axis CNC, maybe.
Excellent video, Steve. I recently purchased one of the Paul Howard jigs, including the hinge base. Not having used that base yet, I am curious what you did to the hinge base to make it better. Thanks!
You all prolly dont give a shit but does anyone know a way to log back into an Instagram account..? I was dumb lost the account password. I would appreciate any tips you can give me
@Bentlee Deacon Instablaster :)
@Layton Rowan Thanks so much for your reply. I found the site on google and Im waiting for the hacking stuff now. Takes a while so I will reply here later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
@Layton Rowan It worked and I finally got access to my account again. I am so happy! Thanks so much, you really help me out!
@Bentlee Deacon glad I could help :D
You need to be careful dropping those carbide cutters on top of another, they are very easy to damage.
Smart dude enjoying his equipment. That’s how he got it. Great information, Thanks will contact Frugal Vacuum
Great info, fantastic video.
Great video, thanks for then great information!
