- hey there my name is Eight and I'm a 20 year old artist and costume maker from Australia. I am entirely self taught so my methods may differ from others you've seen! There is no right or wrong way to create things~ unleash your creativity and see what you can come up with.
I needed to make a basic canine tail for an upcoming commission, so I decided to record the whole process! I give tips here and there via text on the video. I apologise if any of the paragraphs are hard to read- still new to video making!

Another tip would be to make sure that the fur is going the right direction before you cut it out!

When will your commissions be open again?
Unfortunately I'm not sure, but hopefully some time next year! Perhaps early March but that isn't set in stone. I will make announcements everywhere when I do open

Hey, I may be a bit late to comment, but I'm currently making a partial, and I found this tutorial very helpful! It was easy to follow, and very well explained.

I'm glad I watched this, as it helped me realize I could start making fur suits if I begin doing this, and branch out to the more difficult stuff (heads, body suits, etc.). Hoping to get some supplies soon!

I am getting my first fursuit head for my birthday 14 march.
I already made a tail and paws but i am to noob to make a head myself.😀
Although I dont wish to be a furry/have a fursuit, I have great respect for the community. This tutorial also helped me with making a tail for myself im petspace^^ Thankyou, and keep up the great work.

Where do you buy your fur from?
Walmart or Furbuy
Fabrics.com or something like that
FursuitSupplies.com but that's just what I would use (I'm planning on making a partial so that's why I said 'would')

Hi! I made a fursuit tail, and this was a fail, the tail wasn't bouncy , andd i made that from t-shirt, thats bad i know. Have some tips, or something?? Beacuse im kinda beginner
Carmel & Cappuccino it’s okay if you don’t have fur and stuff! fur, especially good quality, soft fur, can be VERY expensive, and if this is your first tail or an early tail you don’t need all that fancy stuff! practice makes perfect and actually, when i was new to tailmaking i used old t-shirts and stuff like that haha. for tips, first off - are you filling the tail? and if so; what are you using? too much or too little polyfil stuffing can be the reason it doesn’t bounce as much as you’d like. if you’re using upholstery foam like you would use for heads or digi legs, or you’re using super dense stuffing, that could be the reason it’s not bouncing enough. i used the cheapest brand of stuffing i could find at my local joanns fabric store and it made my tail MUCH too rigid. remember though- as a beginner, (and even as an experienced tailmaker!) your tails definitely don’t have to be perfect! practice is key and while knowing how to work with expensive materials is important first you gotta know the basics! good luck on your next tails! if you have any questions let me know, i’d be happy to help!
Carmel & Cappuccino you might not have stuffed it enough if it wasn’t bouncy. I never made a tail before but I can understand concepts really quickly. I hope this helps, but I don’t really understand the problem well enough. Another possibility I thought of was the shape of your tail. It does need to have a good shape to look bouncy. Or the attachment. There’s a lot of possible problems actually.

I will keep it by Just stuffing 2 socks and suwing them. And then covering them with fur, then i put on detailes. And done.
I am to lazy to do al of that 😀

Silly question but...instead of sewing it, could you hot glue it? Or is that a bad idea? I don't have a sewing machine so...
don't glue your seams together, especially not on a tail. it will rip and fall apart very easily. If you don't have a machine, handsew it instead.
and besides it ripping and falling apart easier, it will most likely not look very good
I have hot glued every single tail I’ve ever made and I’ve made about four for myself a few for others hot glue can work fine if you know you’re doing with it but I hope you don’t shy away from burning yourself because it will happen. It’s not if it’s when. Are usually keep ice cubes nearby for burns and cooling purposes you really have to press the glue together between the fabric so it gets really into the fibers once you glue a piece of fur to another piece of fur it will be permanent there will be no getting it off sometimes if it is close to your body your body heat mail heat up the glue and let it pull apart so that is something to consider.
Also if this is your first tail I would say hot glue is the way to go since you’re still learning. I would say not until your third tail do you actually understand what works best for you. Trial and error.
It is still not a strong and reliable as sewing your seams however. Even if you glue a tail, it's best if you take the time to learn how to handsew at least. I made my first fursuit with minimal knowledge of sewing or making in general. It's not hard to learn how to sew and I'm sure in the long run Sewing is cheaper than buying glue sticks every time. And also, Sewing can be easily fixed by unpicking the seams. If you glue fur wrong, thats it. The glue is stuck on the fur, wether it be the backing or the fur itself.
You do you of course, I'm just giving my own personal advice.
You don't need a machine to sew! Handsewing is very easy to learn!
Sebastian .Mel. Michaelis sorry I’m late but since hot glue may not be that reliable, maybe you would. E able to use Fabric glue? I dunno maybe you could even use a mixture of both

so like: You draw the shapes on the fabric with fabric markers... Cut them out, Sew them,add that little black thingy, turn inside out, brush,fill with those things and sew closed?

How do you wear the tail without it coming off? Is there some type of sticky stuff u wear for it? I’m so confused, please help
Could you have done the the colors all in one go? (You made 3 sections of green when it was just a stripe was there a reason behind it or is it just personal preference?) Could you have just cut of one long piece of fur?

what are those clips called/where did you get them? I hate using pins and I don't really want to use bulldog clips either
They're called wonder clips or quilting clips! You can find them on eBay pretty easily for cheap
So, while I was developing my fursona, I was inspired by the design of this client’s tail that you were working on and just changed the colors. Now, I want to create the tail and my question is how much of each faux fur did you need to use to create the tail. If you reply, thanks for letting me know 👍🏻

What type of fur do you reccomend for tails?
I know this is an old video, but does anyone have any idea how wide the tail should be at the widest point? I can't find anything anywhere!
I am just curious. When you cut out the green and the pink you cut the stripes up into halves. Whats the purpose of this or is it just the way you do it? Can you cut it out like one continuous stripe? Love this
Personally I prefer hand sewing it’s more precise and sturdy in my opinion. But hey, if you like machine sewing more then that’s fine!
I'm planning to make a tail. But the longest fur I can find is literally 1-2cm. I really don't know how its gonna look.

Question what method do you use to attach elastic bands?
I don't tend to use elastic on tails as the elastic wears out over time- making the tail sag from your belt. I use nylon straps instead as shown in the video~
