    Hi Nina, when it comes to over fertilizing nobody has anything on me. When I started growing orchids twice a month I would through everything I had at them , full dose fertilizer, cal/mag, seaweed, and epson salt all in one feeding. Never measured ppm, you taught me to awlays measure ppm. I will never foget this after I got a ppm meter I mixed a gal of my kitchen sink mix to see just how much I was feeding. It read 1,280 ppm, I could never figure out why I was burning roots, yep 1,280 ppm, never said I was the sharpest pencil in the drawer. Now I feed 180 to 225 ppm and epson salt and seaweed are donw separately.
    I flush once a month and check whats coming out of the pot ph and ppm. I have found I get more salt out of the pot if I flush, let the pot sit for at least 1/2 to 1 hour then flush again. I get more out of the pot the second flush. The first flush just loosens the salt. Have a great day Orchid Master.

      🌸🥷🏼 Bob San 😍🙌🏼🤸 🥰💐 I can see where you are coming from though! You thought you were doing right by your orchids and no one should judge you for that. You used all the right ingredients and meant well. I don't judge you! I commend you for wanting to give your orchids everything they need right from the get go. I am so glad that you have that situation dialled in now though. It feels as though we are not giving them enough when we look at our orchids because, growing houseplants has total different values. Its all about the metabolism though. That is what we have to keep in mind when we apply our nutrients. That is also why slipper orchids need even less than what we would give other orchids. Their metabolism being almost 80% slower, has to be take into consideration. Mine hardly get anything, just to be on the safe side and they still bloom, if they are blooming size. Thank you for your feedback and for trusting the information to implement it. It means a lot! Thank you, also, for your amazing support, watching the videos and supporting the orchids by being an 🌸🥷🏼🫶🏼 it goes a long way 🙏🏼 hope your Sunday is beautiful ❤️🌸

      HI Elen 😍💐 yay!! 🙌🏼🤸🏼‍♀️ I am so glad to read your comment, thank you! I say aggressive fertilizer a lot, because it makes me rethink my quantities and frequency of fertilizing at those quantities... stops me in my breaks, a lot more than thinking... over fertilizing, which can sound a little tame to my head 😬 thank you so much for watching, Elen! I hope you had a beautiful day 🌸

    "don't forget to flush your pots"
    OK, your wish is my command 😉, I did a flush today, the plants that get watered tomorrow will get flushed too. Well, there is a tiny amount (30 ppm) of "stuff" and some seaweed, but it is really a flush in my book. I don't really recall the last one I did, maybe a month, maybe more. I know, that is not being a great orchid parent, but I pour through so much water when I water, I feel as though it is doing some flushing every time anyway.
    So, Sunset Valley came out with their new Cattleya list. They had Laelia Pacavia so I had to get one. And some other stuff.

'if you have the water supply!' and I hope that this summer will be different 🤯😉 good evening, Michael! .... am still up! 😩 oh well... hakuna matata! One day the sleep rhythm will be back. It is just so nice how things fall into place so easily this time of the night. Laelia Pacavia in da Michael House!! soon! Awesome 👍🏼 and some other stuff... mmmhhhkkkaaaayyy! 🤣 looking forward to seeing what other 'stuff' you are getting! Thank you so much for watching... have yourself a relaxing evening. Let's see if I can't evacuate some sheep that are gathering in my boudoir. King is snoring loudly at my feet. AND... its 45ºF 😡😡 wth?? 🥶

    Hi Nina, yes I'm behind again, let's just say the Olympics and naps are to blame. 😁 Great subject!! And yes it's been posted to the Twitt board. 😅 With my mini's, I always use 1/4 of what the feed recommends all the time. Seems to work great for me, but I use Grow More brand fertilizers of different mixes depending on plant, season etc....
    Have a good one... 👋

I am waiting to post the bud picture and the full bloom pic in one post. I don't want you to think that I have forgotten 😬 gosh, you have different mixes for different seasons... now that is what I call tailored! 👍🏼 I have been told that my fertilizing according to root size was far to complicated... oh well! Not for me it isn't 🙃 really appreciate you watching! Sending you virtual hugs 🤗 have a lovely evening, Robert 🥰🌸

      Hi!! 😍💐 its food to see you again! Hope you had yourself a Hoppy Easter 🫶🏼🐰🫶🏼 thank you so much for your feedback on this video, I appreciate it very much 🙏🏼 and thank you for watching. I hope that you will find the meters you are looking for. I use the brand Adwa for both TDS and pH, they are waterproof, have a temperature meter on the display... just in case you would like to add that on your list as you investigate 😬 I like the fact that they do not feel tacky in my hands. And, if I remember correctly, if the probe ever failed, then that piece screws off and can be bought separately without having to buy a whole new meter. I like those options if needed. 👍🏼

    🦒🙌🙏🙋‍♀️ Another very useful topic 👌. These days I fertilize a lot less. That is not only the result of reducing the amounts of fertilizer but also because I flush a lot more frequently and whenever I mist the superficial roots I do it with rain water. I am very attentive to pH as well. Still I don't understand why some beautiful Cattleya root tips get dark and stop growing while others continue happy and green, all going on in the same pot 🤔 Happy and productive day day to you amiga mia 💖😍🤗

    • @NinjaOrchids
      @NinjaOrchids  2 года назад +4

      FFF 🙌🏼🤸🏼‍♀️❤️😍💐 thank you for your feedback, meine liebe Freundin! 🙏🏼 when root tips die in the same pot as others are still growing, I think of what happens there when I am not looking... maybe an insect walked across it,... somethings happen while we are not around, and it can have that effect. All it takes, in my case, is for some ants to spray their little acid messages on a root as they gain access to the happy sap, and bingo... little black dots appear on the velamen, or even the root tip. It is all part and parcel of the activity in the pot that happens and not obvious to the naked eye. Roots out in nature look far far worse and very scary 😅 thank you, once again, for your kind comment, for watching and for supporting me on the daily, amiga!! Big hug to you! I hope your day was beautiful and I wish you a refreshed start to your Thursday 🌸❤️

    Do you get this problem when using organic fertilisers like powerfeed?

    • @NinjaOrchids
      @NinjaOrchids  2 года назад +5

      HI David 🤩💐 oh dear... I have never used organic fertilizers. The only thing I use that is organic, is seaweed. And, the faster wicking or evaporation compared to the absorption rate if the velamen is exposed to the ambient air, will result in the discolorations, yes. Not sure if this was helpful 🙂 high humidity makes this evaporation / absorption ratio much much more favorable. Sadly, I do not have that. Thank you so much for watching, David! I wish you a beautiful day 🌸

  • @carolesykes7955
    @carolesykes7955 2 года назад +5

    I think you've just hit the nail on the head for me Nina. Roots tend to turn brown in the pot and die sometimes and I was thinking it was too cold to keep watering/fertilising through the winter, so I've just bought heat mats for my Cattleya and Den Phals. My Oncidium and Miltoniopsis are fine and the Phals are just suffering above the media. In the summer I was using about 270ppm but have dropped it the last couple of months to about 120.
    I do always stick to 3 weeks fertilising then 1 week flush but in the summer perhaps Cattleya need more plain water.
    Do you check the pH of your water before flushing? My ppm is usually 5-10 but the pH can be nearly 8 sometimes. Should I adjust to between 5.5 to 6.5?.
    I always learn something valuable from you, many thanks 😊

    • @NinjaOrchids
      @NinjaOrchids  2 года назад +4

      Hi Carole 🥰💐 I am glad to read that this video had something in it that helped assess your collection 👍🏼 thank you for letting me know! Yes, I always check my ppm prior to adding any fertilizer or supplement. Mine comes out at the 11 mark and is now around 7pH but has been up to 8 as well in the past. For flushing, there is no need to adjust pH, seeing as water is just being poured through. Having said that, if your water is around at a pH of 8 when you flush, then bring it down to 7 at a minimum. For flushing there is no need to pH as we would when we fertilize or supplement. I hope that makes sense? Let me know if this brings up another thought you would like to run by me 😃 thank YOU so much for your positive feedback, Carole, I really appreciate it! And thank you for watching 🙏🏼 i hope you have a beautiful evening 😍🌸

    I noticed most of your orchids have moss growing on the surface. Does this give more humidity? Or is it just by accident?

    • @NinjaOrchids
      @NinjaOrchids  2 года назад +5

      Hi Brenda 😍💐 the moss has populated itself in and amongst my collection... it is a win win kind of accident 😅 and.. yes, I am leaving it on to a certain degree, because it really helps with the humidity. Sometimes in winter, i am picking off some of it that wants to encroach too close to a rhizome, but, for the most part, i am letting it grow. Especially around the orchitops... incredible how it manages to live even throughout the summers 😅 thank you so much for watching, Brenda ❤️🌸
