    The YF-23 was rejected because of a couple reasons:
    1). The F-22 carried two more missiles then the YF-23
    2). Lockheed was better at marketing their design
    3). The military is notoriously conservative when it comes to designs and the YF23 was too different looking from a conventional jet.
    4). The F-22 appeared to be more maneuverable in test footage however that fact is contested and it might have only appeared that way due to clever marketing and editing of footage.
    5). The military didn’t trust Northrop after the costs on developing the B-2 Spirit spun wildly out of control and the Air Force ended up with a bomber that was only stealthy till it got wet. The military did not want to deal with that sort of debacle again.

    I was a QA inspector on this A/C from almost the beginning. Although I worked on it for about a year, it was an airframe inspector role. I was able to see the first flight which I recorded and put on youtube. I was so excited to watch it. At that time I was on the B-2 as an inspector. This aircraft flew before Lockheed's did and never had any issues like the Lockheed's when on of it's engines caught fire. They eventually gave the contract to Lockheed because Northrop had the B-2 bomber at the same time.

    Choosing F 22 versus 50% better F 23 was a political decision. This can be seen today on the politically correctly designed F 35, whose stealth color is lost due to engine overheating because they played a weak engine. YF-23 fan here. But I could see why they chose the YF-22 over this fighter. The YF-22 fly off display showed much more capabilities of that aircraft compared to the YF-23 fly off display, that combined with behind the scenes drama between the USAF and Northrop Grumman contract overruns with the B2 bomber left it a no brainer for the YF-22 to be chosen. Lockheed saw what they were up against and pulled out all the stops to show they had a prototype fighter that can do things before production. That said the YF-23 was such a impact aircraft, it should have been also selected as a high altitude high speed interceptor and recon aircraft. A Grumman modified YF-23 two seat variant could have been proposed to the USN for a naval air superiority fighter.

    • @Ripa-Moramee
      @Ripa-Moramee Год назад

      The YF-22 was chosen because they wanted a stealth dog fighter, that's why they both had guns. The YF-22 was very stealthy and was only marginally less so than the YF-23, which most likely would have specifically been from the back as thrust vectoring nozzles are less stealthy. The YF-22 also could hold 2 more AMRAAMS', and that is a huge difference. Obviously since they wanted a dog fighter, and the YF-22 was far more maneuverable as well as only being beaten out SLIGHTLY with stealth and super cruise speed (top speeds on both aircraft are on this day highly classified) and could carry 2 more missiles, the YF-22 was selected. Obviously politics played a role, especially the thing you mentioned with the B-2, but ultimately the YF-22 was more closely to what the USAF wanted, as it was to counter the SU-27 and MIG-29 which in the SU-27's case, was a thrust vectoring beast. Obviously the US found out both weren't anywhere near as good as russia claimed (as always) but nonetheless.

    So why don't the countries that want the F-22 buy this instead?

    • @Winddancer1991
      @Winddancer1991 2 года назад

      Mainly because when military planes are sold, the military technology is not. So it’s sold as a raw plane, in which the buying country has to equip it with its own technology, which would be cool with everyone only if the price tag of the raw plane wasn’t enormous. And America has the best technology in the world hands down, the only reason any country would want that plane is if it came with American technology, which America cannot sell or give blueprints for, even if the plane outperforms as a raw plane, in the hands of another country and their technology, it would just be shot down as easily as any other plane. That’s the sad facts
      Edit: oh and btw, one such technology if you needed an example would be a auto pilot in combat mode. I forget the actual name and acronym the military uses for it but the function is that in a combat situation, the plane can autopilot defensive manuevers that will make any pilot in the world pass out from the g forces, however the plane autopilots these manuevers until it detects that it is safe, and that the pilot is again conscious and taking control. No other country has that tech. Research it

    The Decision Politics Aside for a in choosing the F22 Raptor as opposed to the YF23 Black Widow or Grey Ghost as it was also called is widely argued in terms of wish Aircraft was the Best.
    In terms of my thinking the F22 Raptor is now reaching a mile stone in it's operational life and why are the Air Force not electing to purchase more of type but instead we're seeing if anything a Reduction in possible numbers with an Upgrade Program Scheduled but in the meantime we have seen the Air Force order the F15EX Eagle 2 and it has made no secret if the fact this Aircraft is truly based on a Proven Airframe and is as intended to be a platform for both Air Superiority and as a Strike Aircraft with it's ability to carry a massive load of Weapons like that of the lesser talked about F16 Falcon, The pocket rocket and it's ability to carry a large amount of external stores and what if the F36 Kingsnake, All very interesting isn't it but when we look back at the F22 Raptor it has performed admirably in its role and shown versatility but in the end that question comes back.
    Is the F22 Raptor the better of the two when we speak of the YF23 Black Widow and was it the First choice.
    Fighter, I have no conclusive proof when looking at the Released Performance Charts and Figure's to say One or the Other in type, Which is better, I am certain that Politics had a hand in this but to which extent I don't know.
    What I do know is that with some F22 Raptor Aircraft being possibly retired from service with those remaining to as mentioned undergo a major upgrade so I have been told begs the very Question of what about the YF23 Black Widow if all of a sudden we did a back to the future scenario, Right now in today's environment a newly equipped YF23 with the use of Composite Materials for it's Construction And today's Power Plants and new Weapons, Cockpit and Pilot Intergration would make this Aircraft very suitable to today's Air combat Environment, I strongly believe this.
    It's an aircraft that would not look out of place by any means.
    To big for use on Navy Aircraft Carriers due to it's length is probably that thought about at the time with maybe a view to putting the F22 Raptor in a modified for use on Carriers in terms of its Undercarriage etc, and on that point why was the F16 Falcon With it's already sturdy undercarriage not thought over by the United States as a mainly Strike Aircraft in back up to the Brilliant F14 Tomcat and I wonder where we might have ended up if the F14 22 version format was ever put into service such as seen on RUclips and also the Naval version in single seat format F22N with it's swing wing's would have possibly put everything under the microscope but that's something to discuss later because we know the dynamic changes structural wise the F22N Naval version would need .
    For mine Politics Aside for the Air Force the YF23 could still be revived and thus the F23 Black Widow .

    John

    Politics and "spreading the wealth" was the primary reason it didn't get chosen. It was the superior aircraft. The YF-22's design allowed for thrust vectoring which the YF-23 did not. And yet, the turning radius of the YF-22 was only marginally better than the YF-23 even with thrust vectoring. In hindsight, the cost of the 22 has proven it was not the right choice. I wish they hadn't put the 23 into mothballs but continued to fly it as a test platform. It and the B-1 are two of the most beautiful modern aircraft.

    OK, listen up oh ye of the tin foil hats. The resounding reason why the F22 was chosen over the YF23 is so simple and some of you just dont get it. It was chosen because F15 Pilots could Integrate to it faster because the project was mean to replace the F15. PERIOD. The F22 is an F15 upgrade and thats all. You just don't ever have 200 pilots ready to jump into a completely new airframe. F15 pilots can jump in and be familiar with it in a matter of weeks rather than a year.

    Don't agree. I think the Su-57 is an adequate match in many situations, and other planes can match the F22 either in their domain, or with the right upgrades. F22 is still the world's best air superiority plane overall for the time being, but the time is coming when the SU-57 and others surpass it.
