  • 08/05/2012: Steve Trovato and band every Sunday night until September 2012 at Lucy's 51 in Toluca Lake, CA.
Steve did a weekly gig at Lucy's 51 and one night Scott Henderson showed up. I guess it was not completely unexpected as Steve brought a spare amp for Scott to play through - the Twin sitting sideways next to Steve's Carp amp. Scott used Steve's red Suhr Tele and some spare OD pedal. As far as I can remember he came completely empty handed and used Steve's gear.

These guys were both teachers/counselors when I attended GIT in the mid 80's. They are both monsters, to be sure. I once saw Travato do a cold sight-read on a crazy Jazz piece. Most players would have eaten shit on it. The guy is so underrated. Although his skills have dulled a bit over the years from what I remember, he is still a force to be reckoned with. Scott is just ridiculous and continues to get better all the time. Definitely two of my biggest inspirations while at MI. I could listen to them play all day and night.

Both great players, unreal!!! I think scott is unique, creative going somewhere else far beyond, I love it. ✌🏻

Great to hear Henderson playing a Tele - He sounds awesome as usual - proof that it's all in the fingers - Scott's phrasing, articulation, feel - it's all there, even if it's not exactly his tone

Inst it amazing how much tone comes from the soul....Scott without his Suhr guitar and amp and yet....he still sounds just like Scott!! Music comes from the soul!
    Peace.

I keep coming back to this great posting blown away each time.
Trovato is a guitar master in his own right playing tasty as hell.
However, nobody blows through changes like Henderson. Yikes!
Trovato can barely contain his laughter of joy......lol
It would be difficult for most mortal guitarist to take the stage with these MONSTERS!

Wow. What a treat to accidentally discover this clip.
Its interesting to note how musicians (almost as a reflex) smile and laugh at hearing musical statements. This is the kinda stuff Carlton, Ford, and Benson listen to while driving their cars. [Smiling and laughing the whole time I'm sure :-)]

ones inability to "hear" the tasteful harmonic implications of jazz modes over a trad blues shuffle does not validate the perception that the song was ruined. adrenalinekeepsake observation about Steve Trovato's reaction is spot on!

That's Steve's guitar. He played it at last night's Lucy's show. BTW he will be at Lucy's monthly going forward. They weren't sure of the October date last night, but well worth catching.

Scott still sounds like no one else but him on a tele! But his amp was turned up too loud.

Can't think I've ever seen Scott play a non-Strat-type guitar, let alone one without a whammy bar... :-o. His playing is pure SH nevertheless. Again you see it's the man that makes the music, not the gear. Great stuff!
And well: Steve Trovato certainly is a great player as well - but Scott's just on a different level. I guess Steve would be the first to acknowledge that.

Steve Trovatto sounds great too. Only 'problem' is he's not loud enough in the mix. Scott brought me here, via the 'Wankapedia' segment of the great podcast he co-hosts w/ fellow great 6 stringers Bruce Forman and Troy McCubbin.

That lick @ 6:41 based on the Symmetric Diminished scale he likely got from John Scofield's circa 1984 when he was in Miles' band. Scott got a lot of his vocab from Sco

SH ruined the song? LOL... He just showed that even such a simple song can be the basis of real inventive and non-standard-licks playing... Steve Trovato obviously enjoyed it a lot.

  • @ckeatin

Ruin the song?? Wow. Maybe if one is expected standard I IV V country/blues vocabulary. Scott's ability to weave jazz lines into standard blues amazes me.
Different strokes I guess for those that don't like it ... Your loss ;)
