Absolutely no one had a band as tight as Frank Zappa`s. Virtually all of them were virtuosos and it shows in clips like this one. RIP, Frank Zappa . The world of music is worse off for your departure from this mortal coil .
Early -" Heart" was tight...Tull, and off in another world Lawrence WElk" (yeah don't boo me.. they were great musicians..and all of these bands were led b manical workaholic taskmasters.
Come on, it is VERY easy to play like this! All you need is to surround yourself with brilliant musicians, have your head screwed on tight and be a genius... Frank was a hell of a guitarist by the way.
Sven Jansen I'm sure they rehearsed it many times. But it was a great rendition of an old Allman's song with the usual Zappa-isms. But it was a great performance. You're right.
Only FZ and his band could break into a free-time jam behind the guitar solo in a song like 'Whippin' Post' !!! All of his musicians where the best !!!!!!! Miss ya, Frank ! Peace:-)
Wow! Talk about taking a cover and making it your own! Six countercultural thumbs up for Frank and another pair for the Singer/Keyboardist (and another pair for that bassist!)! Fantastic live performance, gentlemen! I salute you all!
Frank's band at this time was obviously one of his best, of so many. Bobby Martin's vocals here are some of the best I have ever seen in my life, he sings with such incredible intensity. If you don't get that from hearing this, you must be dead. Yes, that's Chad W. on drums and of course, he's not "under-rated" as one member puts it; he happens to be one of the most celebrated Jazz drummers in history. But he was a child prodigy and Frank met him very early on in Chad's career. I heard Frank's band many times over the years, and several times in early 80's but I don't think Bobby Martin was in the band then. I would have remembered him. Terry B. was also really great to hear with Frank, but Chad came in after Terry and could hold his own. Frank's band was so much ahead of his time in 1984, 29 years later, it still sounds fresh and riveting! F&ck I wish I could sing like that!
Fucking awesome, great, incredible cover of The Allman Brothers Band by Frank Zappa ! The singer is just awesome, at the end he sing like a gospel singer, he's just perfect ! FZ !
That ending cadence was so lit, punctuated by Franks wry little grin. ;) They transcended genre, honored the ABB, and kicked ass in their their own unique idiom. That's what artists live for. Great stuff.
Got the DVD for my wife, a Zappa fan, recently and I really loved it. But this guitar solo is just incredible, off the charts. He is without a doubt one of the best that I have heard. Truly emotional.
I saw Banned from utopia in "Blackburn Lancashire..." Robert Martin at the age of sixty one smashed it out again, i was so excited to be two meters away from him that i shouted"Go on Martin!!!" immediately i knew i had fluffed my line as he looked at me sternly and did not film him singing Whipping post,
Isn't it great when you take an already great song, by a great band, and make it even better. Well actually, it's pretty tough to separate the two. I'll say this though, Bobby Martin absolutely kills it on lead vocal. The band is amazingly tight too.
This is one of my favorite videos of all time I'm so in love with the keyboardist. God he killed it I really think it's better than the original. So soulful and punchy and sexy. One of the greatest live performances ever.
Love to see the respect Frank Zappa and his band had for the Allman Brothers band. I've seen them do many parodies at concerts but they went all out on their own version that kicked ass imo
@@peterbartolomeo5542 Zappa's guitar is more clinical, gives more of a "Look at what can be done with the guitar" feel than Hendrix's "Look at the bearing of my soul in the form of sweet sound." I'd give the edge to Zappa for composition, but Hendrix is king when it comes to rock guitar improvisation.
I was 17 when I was at this show, part of the Concerts on the Pier shows on the Hudson River in Manhattan. Although I knew Zappa was a good musician, I had no idea what an amazing guitarist he was. He pretty much blew me away. Very cool to be able to see it all over again. Thanks.

Wouldn't even attempt it even if I could sing. My lungs would explode and my vocal chords tear themselves to shreds. God only made one Frank Zappa and only one Bobby Martin.
Thanks so much for this AWESOME upload...It's been in my favorites since you uploaded it...I hope your still around and healthy....Chills seeing everyone so young... Chad looks like a kid...:)...And Frank, it's moving to see him like this in his prime... Saw FZ in 78 at the Tower Theater in upper darby...
Zappa was a huge talent, he chose the best musicians for his studio albums and live shows, he was one off the first guitar players to use the tapping tech, it was in 1976 on a tv show, it is on youtube, it was before anyone ever heard or saw eddie van halen, at that time only a few guitar players used that tech and for a short measure, when he played that tech live on tv he didn't say to the tv host that he used a new and rare tech, he was one off the greatest artists of all time but he was a humble person
I've seen Frank so many times I have bought lots of albums and later on in life the CDs I've seen him in Berkeley and Stockton and Sacramento one of these days I'm going to see his son playing his dad's music such great memories
Spellbound when I watched this show on a DVD outdoors in a Film Festival in Rome, this summer. Holy Shit... WHAT a show, even by Zappa standards. A MUST HAVE DVD, folks!
the ability for the bass and other guitar parts to stay in key and make those shifts is just amazing. Sure his solo's are different, that doesn't mean they are bad though. I like that he brings change to the table, instead of hearing the same blue patterns and sweeps that you hear in most guitar solo's in bands anymore.
An incredible Rock performance by Frank and Crew. Thanks for posting! Bobby exceeded Greg and Whitney by a considerable margin here (and, I bet, elsewhere as well).
this band is KICK ASS, all of them giving superior performances and I'm not just talking about the music, but also stage perfomance. One seemingly crazier than the other.
Ive seen this version in Buffalo and 3 days later a reggae version in Cleveland, both great that's for sure!!!! Frank man I miss you!, that's ok Dweezle is keepin the music alive!
You're OK Bob6. Hitting the nail on the head. so to speak. There's a lot of phenominal live Frank "toss-offs" as you put it. Pretty tight band to pull it off. Never thought of any of it as a cover, but rather as tributes. Boot-legged and weird old vinyl is the best stuff I've ever heard, when they just go. Frank freakin' Zappa.

Frank Zappa does my favorite cover of this song since the Allmans I believe I was at this show and I caught the Halloween show at the Palladium a year or 2 before he did the best version of Black Napkins at that one!!
Frank was and will always remain The Man. No one comes near him on every factor of music. The Captain gets close, though. Together they are pure genius. When will the world recognise such talented people.
Coming out of Dancin' Fool, into Whippin' Post,I read that at some concert, someone in the audience was yelling Whipping Post,so Frank wanted to learn it,and Bobby Martin said he knew it and could teach it to the band and sing it! So that's how it came about. And,Frank did an instrumental called"A Song For Dawayne"(Allman"),just an E/A/G/E vamp with Frank Soloing over it,pretty COOL! I'll have to see if it's on youtube.

Yeah except that the lineup changed every now & then. It was like an academy.
Early -" Heart" was tight...Tull, and off in another world Lawrence WElk" (yeah don't boo me.. they were great musicians..and all of these bands were led b manical workaholic taskmasters.
Bobby Martin's performance is the absolute highlight of the entire DHBIM? video.

Frank was a hell of a guitarist by the way.
1 in a trillion.
Dunno whats better, the performance or Frank's smug grin knowing the band is really coming together tonight
They play out of this world, so tight and just.. TOO GOOD!
Sven Jansen I'm sure they rehearsed it many times. But it was a great rendition of an old Allman's song with the usual Zappa-isms. But it was a great performance. You're right.
Mark Kearney They're pretty good musicians..
+Sven Jansen - "But no one gives a fuck if there are good musicians on it" ... :-)
NOISEDEPT You make a muffin betta!
So glad that I was fortunate to see the master 4 times in concert - once with Captain Beefheart!
MrTurboparker
I am jealous of you. By the time I was old enough to go to concerts Frank was long dead. One of the minor tragedies of my life.
Bobby Martin killed it on vocals!!! The look on frank's face at the end of the song says" I have to follow this?"
it really was. so apparent, he was like yes, oh fk yes., he knew it. no in ears max volume, he knew it.
one of the best voices i've ever heard
Bobby Martin is fucking amazing on this song. Frank always had a nack for finding great talent and pushing them to become something even more!
Thanks for the Name. Incredible this song.

Holy shit that dude can sing!
Bobby Martin, for. tha. win.
Great performance
Fucking awesome, great, incredible cover of The Allman Brothers Band by Frank Zappa !
The singer is just awesome, at the end he sing like a gospel singer, he's just perfect !
FZ !
in spite of some of my southern ROCK friends, Frank did this in tribute, not as a parody.
It's such a drag that both Gregg Allman and Frank Zappa are no longer with us. How great would it have been to see them play together "LIVE"?!
MISS YOU EVERY DAY FRANK , STILL NO ONE DOES IT BETTER
That ending cadence was so lit, punctuated by Franks wry little grin. ;) They transcended genre, honored the ABB, and kicked ass in their their own unique idiom. That's what artists live for. Great stuff.
I'd never heard this version before.
Glad I finally got to hear it.
Makes me wonder what else he covered I'm missing...
god dammit is that singer ever great!
Yeah, no talent in Frank's band (roll eyes)
Well, he had some big shoes to fill. Gregg allman, one of the best white blues singers ever.
@@michaelt.2009 he really could sing. I didn't get to see the Allmans til 89 and unlike a few singers from the 60s/70s he hadn't lost a step.
Bobby Martin
Heck there's so much energy intensity in the intro part where it gets heavy and Bobby starts singing.
When Frank Zappa died, music creativity has never been the same ! 😎✌
Amazing solo, amazing band and amazing Bobby Martin on vocal. Simply the best band you've never heard in your live.
Got the DVD for my wife, a Zappa fan, recently and I really loved it. But this guitar solo is just incredible, off the charts. He is without a doubt one of the best that I have heard. Truly emotional.
I'm amazed at Frank Zappa never get to mention for his guitar work he is one of the great gone way too soon
He does. They just don't mention Frank playing the drums. Most underrated drummer that there is.
EVH 🎸 knew it 😉
One of the 20 best songs/performance EVER
Je me souviens de ce concert. J'y étais par hasard. La claque !

there was and will only be one frank zappa rip my man
yes....humour does belong in music!! RIP Frankie.....Chad, Scott, Bobby you're all frickin awesome!!
I was at this one. Bobby Martin crushed the vocal.
The same guy who ten minutes earlier did the lilting falsetto in "He's So Gay". Get you a man who can do both.
Isn't it great when you take an already great song, by a great band, and make it even better. Well actually, it's pretty tough to separate the two. I'll say this though, Bobby Martin absolutely kills it on lead vocal. The band is amazingly tight too.

Frank Zappa, The Mothers of Invention, and the Allman Brothers band were all "so different", but so FUCKING GREAT!!!
Beatles for the songs, Hendrix for the guitar, but Zappa for PURE CRAFTSMANSHIP!
Heres a jewel::::: ZAPPA WAS BETTER ON GUITAR THAN HENDRIX.

I been run down
Lord, I been lied to
And I don't know why
I let that mean woman make out a fool
She took all my money
Wrecked my new car
Now she's with one of my good-time buddies,
Drinkin' in some cross-town bar
Sometimes I feel

Like I been
Tied to the whippin' post
Tied to the whippin' post
Good Lord, I feel like I'm dyin'
My friends tell me
That I been such a fool
But I got to stand there an' take it
All for loving you
Drown myself in sorrow
As I look at what you done
Nothin' seems to change;
That bad times stay the same,
And I can't run
Sometimes I feel
Sometimes I feel
Like I been
Tied to the whippin' post

The greatest live performance ever, in my opinion.
I mean, Allman Brothers band have Live at Fillmore East, one of the best live album and perfomances of all time.
He was my cousin. Seriously, he has relatives in Brazil that we are related to.Viva Frank Zappa!
OMG, Frank. Your fingers are so fast and make such a pretty sound. Missing you.
He was greater than Jimi Hendrix on guitar. Most people fail to realise how incredible Frank played. Ask Stevie Via
What an incredible vocal performance!
I dare you to try sing this like Bobby Martin. Double dare you.
I can
+tehf00n lol. it's truly a magical performance
Wouldn't even attempt it even if I could sing. My lungs would explode and my vocal chords tear themselves to shreds. God only made one Frank Zappa and only one Bobby Martin.
LOL
I doubt that very very much VARSHa
He's a great musician and body builder and nice guy.
Why is he so fucking good at guitar

The man was a genius, both in music and in life. Well ahead of his time.
Wow. Frank single handedly made this song even more amazing....
RIP Gregg. (misspelt in the credits, BTW)
on his best days, Frank is the greatest dirty filthy rock guitarist to have ever done it.
All the musicians who played with Frank, are great and have each their own style, perior.
This has to be one of my favorite songs.
Love the way he leaves, like he was saying "it's over and i don't have emotions"
Pavol Sočuvka Supercool!
I love this interpretation of this Allman Brothers classic.
