🌕 I was a Newport Huntington surf grimie till I moved to the islands at 17 in 1969 so it was about 1966 when we spent the night in my friends grandpas surf shack in Balboa and we wondered over to the Rendeviou and Dick Dale was shaking the place down, we were to young to get in but we stood outside the entire show. The reverb inside had to be insane because it sounded so good as it was reverb w an echo as loud as it was I just felt I couldn’t get as close as I wanted as it was behind locked doors.there was no sign but there is no doubt it was him as his music set my sole on fire and I play his music on Strat almost everyday and play his dvd loud when I drive around so people can hear real stuff blasting in the wind.

Golden Bear, in HB for me as a young Grimy. Then many time throughout his career. Then finally at the Hermosa Saloon in Hermosa Beach, CA at 81, the year before he passed.

Wow I never got to see him. But I did see Bob Dylan in Huntington Beach about 1966. He was across the Hwy from Golden Bear directly down on the walkway to the beach. He had a drum on his chest and a harmonica on steel chin support. He looked young like 16 I was 14. I was not sure as me and buddies walked by him. He knew I recognized but not the song. I said I This is bob dylan at about 10 feet away my buds nah that’s not him. But later that day I saw he was schedule to play posted on Golden Bear it was about 1966. A couple years ago I looked it up and he played there a few times and I found in 1966/67 so no doubt I’m not crazy, I know it was him. I have always been a fan

This guy is my hero. Apparently he was in a lot of pain during these last performances of his life. He kept plugging away, supposedly because he had medical bills to pay, but you can see that he’s not just trying to survive. Doing what he loved was clearly as important, if not more. What a badass.

Dick Dale is an example of a life well lived! Just like the way he played! He got every ounce of power and sound out his guitar 🎸 just like he squeezed every ounce of living out of life! He moved to California back in the early Fifties and immediately fell in love with surfing and the guitar 🎸. Since then he’s been a staple of the California scene and sound. An American Icon and Original for over 50 years! A legendary guitar player who helped Leo Fender design bigger and louder amps and guitar designs! He was unique and will be missed but will never be forgotten!
RIP Dick Dale -King of the Surf Guitar 🎸 And Stratocaster!

So glad me, my wife and youngest son, had the chance to see Mr. Dale live at a local place in 2017. I was just offstage behind his lovely wife Lana, who ended up talking with me and was so sweet enough to get me a few of Mr. Dale's cards autographed to me!
I'm 60 now and have been enjoying "The king of the Surf Guitar" music since I was three years old - and will continue, along now also with my youngest son for many years to come!
R.I.P Dick Dale - a True American Original!!!

So glad i got to see Dick dale just once before he died.
Saw him in Hermosa Beach California.
He loved to talk a lot and tell stories during his show which was really cool.
Anyways i managed to get my Fender Strat into the venue.
His jerk stage manager tells me that maybe i can get my guitar signed after the show.
After the show the guy is being a jerk and asking me to just keep waiting so...
I just waited around until no one was around to stop me from walking straight into the green room.
Then i just walk in there, guitar over my shoulder as Dick Dale is telling some guy...
" I would prefer to get paid in CASH! "
While the guy is walking out right passed me he says,
" I'll try Mr. Dale, but it will probably be a check"
So the guy walks out while i'm passing him then i notice that he's the only person in there with
Mr. and Mrs. Dale, so they are just there sitting on a sofa, looking at me like
" who the heck are you? "
So i just sat down on the other sofa and said,
" Mr. dale, I would honored if you would sign my Fender Strat "
He just looks at his wife , doesn't say a word, stands up and walks out of the room.
His wife Lana was so cool with me,
She said it was OK and then Dick Dale came back and signed my Fender Strat for me!
True story, hope you enjoyed it.

Watching this now once again in sadness. As I wrote below in a piece last year, went to see Dick in Dublin in the late 90's and it was like none other. He touched my ears but much more than that, he touched my heart. I sincerely hope, Lana, that you get some comfort out of the love we all have around the world for this man. From the bottom of my heart I send you my sympathy. A hugely talented man with a generous heart has passed and the world is a lesser place now. Rest In Peace.

Little know fact: After Dick Dale was laid to rest, his guitar strings were used to replace the cables on the Golden Gate Bridge.

I worked at the Rendezvous in '61 thru '62 and met Dick Dale and the Deltones, the Righteous Brothers and many other performers who would go on to become 'famous' and I always thought that Dale's riffs and structure had an "Arabic" flavor. Turns out that Dick Dale is of Lebanese descent. Thank the lord! Leo Fender idolized the Man and his style, created amps that made the Dick Dale band the loudest ever heard in those days. The Redezvous has a 'floating' wooden dancefloor, which produces a booming sound, with the surfer stomp being an invented surfing dance style. Between the floor and the amps and the reverb, the rafters literally shook in that Ballroom! The Rendezvous was the first venue to welcome the new massive sound, thanks to Dick Dale and his Father, who rented the Ballroom for his son's debut, in his progress towards World Fame! The Rendezvous burned down in '65 and was replaced with condominiums.

What can you say when a hero dies? I was lucky enough to grow up in Los Angeles in the sixties, and will always remember when Lloyd Thaxton introduced Dick Dale playing his new song Surf Beat. I got a musical shock when he hammered the first notes and it's been with me ever since . Sweet sorrow. Dick Dale packed at least 2 or more lives in his 81 years. I'm too sad too write anymore. I went to the Pike in Long Beach, Ca. when You played in the auditorium they had at that time. I am Very Glad I was able to see You that one time in all these years. I am twelve years younger and I play harmonicas in church. I was getting to where I could blow through a trumpet. Then I needed to have a Benign Tumor removed. So with the face modification, I have a couple things different to get the air, but if I really get at it, as You spoke of, then perhaps GOD can make it sound like Music. You and Your Angel do so much to Bless each other. I also have my first "Dick Dale" record album; SURFER'S CHOICE" . However, RUclips is easier too get into for that and songs I don't have albums of. Nor 45's. I Love All Ya'All. I been in Kansas now for the last twenty years. Please keep going as long as GOD lets You !!!

I had no idea he played multiple instruments, and it would have been interesting to see him hook up with Ringo Starr and Edgar Winter. Great performance by a guy who was in seriously bad shape at the time -- I think some missed that his wife was on the stage in case he needed help, such as getting up there -- and the Satchmo impression was a nice touch. This is the kind of thing you show off to friends or family who complain that they're old.

Dick Dale is considered the father of heavy metal because of his wild, loud playing technique. Says Wikipedia and thats true! Awesome show by this old geezer!
