Hey Rick, Materials Scientist here. Boron is added to unalloyed and low alloyed steels to enhance the hardness level through enhancement hardenability. Best regards from Germany :)
Steffen Hartmann Which allowed them to make a thinner face (more ball speed) and still keep it a "one piece forged." Great club although I'm not giving up my 850 Forged which look better to me and perform almost identically...
Thanx Rick and Rob for all the advice and entertainment. Traded in my Taylormade Rocketbladez yesterday for jpx 900 forged. Played my first round today with the new clubs and shot my second best round ever! (shot 80 from a 14 handicap). Really can feel the difference with forged clubs
I've owned my JPX 900 Forged clubs for over a year. Out of curiosity (the grass is always greener...) I demo'd the PXG irons recently. That convinced me that I made the right decision when I got my Mizunos.
From my dictionary...Boron is usually prepared as an amorphous brown powder, but when very pure it forms hard, shiny, black crystals with semiconducting properties. The element has some specialized uses, such as in alloy steels and nuclear control rods...
I just bought a set of used JPX 900 forged from Edwin Watts. They have the Project X LZ 70 gram graphite shafts with regular flex. Hit 9 irons in the simulator along with about 7 or 8 other 9 irons including another set of JPX 900 forged with steel shafts and a set of JPX 921 Hotmetal with steel shafts. I also had my current Callaway Razor 9 iron. All of them I hit between 125 & 135 until I got to the ones with the Project X graphites, the ball went 130-140+, so I would say an easy 5 yards longer. I didn't realize it at the time, but I'm also hitting them a mile in the air. Maybe too high for windy days. The feel is buttery soft, so I love that, but we'll have to see on the golf course if they are right for me. I only paid $229 for a set of Forged irons, so I'm going to have fun with them for a while and see what happens. I doubt I can lose money on them.
Hey Rick, great review but the spin is similar to the Benross HTX Type R yet you was very concerned with a 7 spinning at around 5500. Cheers and keep up the great reviews
Great review Rick! Currently playing Taylormades.. been wanting to switch to Mizunos. Trying to decide if I should get the JPX 850 forged or 900 forged. How much of a difference (improvement) is the 900 over 850?
Hey Rick, with the release of JPX-923 Forged and getting some pretty good reviews across the RUclips fraternity, I'd be rapt to see you do a review that compares the development from the now 6yo JPX-900 Forged to the modern JPX-923 Forged. I get fitted this week by a Mizuno rep, it was hard to split the 923-Forged and the 923-Tour. The Tour certainly had better feedback and better landing angles but the tight dispersion and forgiveness of the 923-Forged was impossible to ignore. Whether they have any particular technology that is different to the old 900-Forged and the data from Trackman would be very interesting.
Isn't the key issue with these irons the approach to gapping at the low end... In essence, this set compresses a very similar loft range as the mp 25 set into one fewer iron. This frees up space in the bag for an additional wedge, hybrid, or wood, so long as you can tolerate bigger spacing from gap wedge to 9 iron. Looks an interesting approach...
has anyone got a comparison between the feel of these and the cobra king forged tec? looking to get one of them next and just wanted a few opinions before i have a go with them. I just love the black Kings!!
Jury's still out for me. Still playing MP 57's and want just a bit more forgiveness but don't want to lose the gf forged feel. AP2 seems like the front runner for me. Also don't want crazy strong lofts where I'll need to re-do the top and bottom of my bag.
Boron is a mineral that they add to the steel to make it stronger/harder thats why it doesnt feel quite as soft. I think these could go in ur bag Rick (i know u love the tour 900's) but give yourself a wee margin for error...the tour give 0 help on misshits at least these give u a little.
Anyone have an idea of how these would compare to my current set which are the MP-58s from several years back? My assumption is that these JPX 900 Forged would be a bit more forgiving as they would fall a little further into the game improvement range. I just don't get out often enough anymore to play my MP-58s well enough, unfortunately. Too bad too, because I absolutely love those clubs still.
Big question Rick have been looking at the same set as these in second hand, only been playing golf for 5 months so basically am new golfer. Would I struggle with these due to not having bug cavity back? Would live to know thanks
hey rick, big fan btw love the content, i was wondering if theres any good shot info tracking technology or programs like the trackman that are cheaper...being that i practice in my garage itd be great to know the stats of the shots im playing and not completely judge it by feel...thanks so much keep up the good work!
I just had a quick look at their website: out of the 8 offered iron lines only 3 are right hand only. That's not too bad. However, those three (MP5, MP4 and JPX 900 Tour) being all in the better player bracket is a bit of a bummer when you want to experience the ultra true Mizuno forged feel as a leftie... I feel for you.
will there be a significant difference if I get this than the jpx 850? I'm going to invest on my new irons and they told me that mizunos are more forgiving than titleist and I did try the ap1 and my god when you get a miss hit you will definitely feel it. the jpx 850 where bigger than the ap1s and to me (with the graphite shaft) felt like it was a tad bit heavier on the club head but they look better than the ap1s. so to get to my point should I just get the jpx 850 forged or should I wait and get the jpx 900 forged when it becomes available here in my country?
RLJSings I think you mean ap2? I'm might pick up the 850's now as well I love the look of these but I'm not paying £750 instead of £350 just because they look nicer
I find that GC2 is overestimating the carry distance?? I got the same ballspeed of Rick 4i with my 7i (bs in the 130-133 mph area) but i nowhere carry it at 200+y. on a trackman normalized data, my 6i (apex pro) got 138-140 mph ball speed and only carried 195y. Besides rick carried over 145 y with only 107 mph and my 9i 160y with 118-123 Mph ball speed. CG2 is either overestimating the carry distance or my launch conditions are very bad...
You are comparing apples with oranges: Rick's 4i with your 7i. Although you have the same ball speed there is a different (dynamic) loft presented to the ball. 5:11 If you can launch the ball with 11.9° while maintaining your 133mph ball speed with your 7i you should also achieve a 208y carry. (playing off the back foot, closing the face; not sure the ball will stay on the green though) You see everything is ok with GC2 as your 9i goes further than Rick's, as you have more ball speed.
bro, the boron has been out for like 2 years, it just makes the metal slightly stronger in order to make the face a bit thinner to increase ball speed . but in theory not to negatively impact feel too much. how does no one understand this? haha
Cornwall1888 it doesnt maintain softness...it makes the steel harder to enable it to be made thinner to allow the trampoline effect. So u lose a little bit of the softness but these still feel fantastic 👍 as do all mizuno irons.
I tested both the new JPX900 and MP range at a fitting center. According to the numbers the MP25s gave me the best numbers overall. Distance, spin numbers, ball flight, shot shape, etc. were relatively close between 900 tour and MP25s but I found MP25s were more forgiving on off center strikes (duh) and the extra 3-5 yards distance helped too. I believe the 900 range are amazing clubs but personally I have to trust the numbers. I tried the Forged & Hot Metal, which are beautiful clubs but I wasn't a huge fan after testing them. I prefer traditional lofted clubs. I would never say that there aren't upgrades in iron technology year to year but I personally didn't witness anything exceptionally different with the new JPX900.
Rick, thanks for your well-done videos.Been playing the 900 forged for a year now after trading in my 850 forged. They're (I'm ?) getting better all the time!dennis
I'm using a set of MP-37s - so both I guess. Basically a 4-GW set today is the same as a 3-PW with traditional lofts. Out on the course it doesn't matter which number is stamped on the sole of your clubs anyway. You just need to know your distances. Honestly, all this marketing talk about clubs being longer... I don't see that as a benefit. It would just mess up my gaps to the point where I'd have to replace all my clubs. Then again, that's probably what the OEMs want. They're only in it for the $$$.

Rudi Nel Nel im playing rocketbladez still and considering buying a set of these. How much distance do you lose with them?
rick, just added these to the bag and they are fantastic
It's nice to see the reviews on these old clubs, They are a decent price on the used market :)
I've owned my JPX 900 Forged clubs for over a year. Out of curiosity (the grass is always greener...) I demo'd the PXG irons recently. That convinced me that I made the right decision when I got my Mizunos.
Just Purchased these Irons...You're Spot On with your details with performance with the 900 Forged.
The Persuader just got custom fit today for 5 - GW can't wait till they come in. Love the feel and the forgiveness.
Love the matte finish on these irons. I got to hit these a few weeks back and really enjoyed them. Mizuno continues to put out a great product.
how many hole in ones have u done on the simulater?
andersvik how many 4 putts?
a few videos ago he said they have never got a hole in one on the simulator. unless that has changed

how would you compare to the 850 forged from last year?
I play off 17. Are these ok for me or would I be better off with the hot metal. I'm not a particularly good ball striker.
I would think hot metal but whatever you like best in testing. I'm a scratch playing game improvement irons right now.
Great review Rick! Currently playing Taylormades.. been wanting to switch to Mizunos. Trying to decide if I should get the JPX 850 forged or 900 forged.
How much of a difference (improvement) is the 900 over 850?
will you ever do a review on new Srixon irons?
Love your Videos Rick i learn some new stuff from you I'm 15 Year's old from America!!
They feel fantastic and look the part. Nothing negative to day at all. These may be replacing my MP25s.
Robert Nava what's wrong with your 25's, or do you just want a shiny new toy?
Cornwall1888 Partly the shiny new toy, also I feel like the JPX 900 forged is a touch more forgiving.

I just purchased a set of these irons this afternoon. I hit the Miura CB501's but these were a little more forgiving and these were $1,000.00 less.
As an athletic higher handicap, are these a feasible option or would I be much better off with the Hot Metal?
I have seen these in the store now, and love the sandblasted finish. I think it will age well too. Kind of reminds me of newer Ping finish.
Isn't the key issue with these irons the approach to gapping at the low end... In essence, this set compresses a very similar loft range as the mp 25 set into one fewer iron. Great video as always Rick 👍🏾 any chance of you doing a video on tips for playing from the rough or difficult lies at some point ?
Jury's still out for me. Still playing MP 57's and want just a bit more forgiveness but don't want to lose the gf forged feel. AP2 seems like the front runner for me. Also don't want crazy strong lofts where I'll need to re-do the top and bottom of my bag.
Those are gorgeous clubs. Definitely the prettiest Mizuno has made in that mid-low handicapper range.
How does the feel of the 900 Forged compare to the feel of the Ping i200 ?
Steel or graphite shaft iron comparison please !
Do you always test with their stock staff option?
Boron is a mineral that they add to the steel to make it stronger/harder thats why it doesnt feel quite as soft.
I think these could go in ur bag Rick (i know u love the tour 900's) but give yourself a wee margin for error...the tour give 0 help on misshits at least these give u a little.
Rick, if I got fitted for the 900 forged would it be okay to buy 850 forged and apply those specs? Love the channel
Hey Rick, how come you test the clubs with Pro v1's, instead of Chromesofts since that is what you play with?
Anyone have an idea of how these would compare to my current set which are the MP-58s from several years back? Big cavity* 🙈
Hit the hot metal a few weeks ago, great set of clubs
Great review rick!
your swing is on point mate!
Out of all the clubs you have tested. What set of irons had the highest rate of spin?????
hey rick, big fan btw love the content, i was wondering if theres any good shot info tracking technology or programs like the trackman that are cheaper...being that i practice in my garage itd be great to know the stats of the shots im playing and not completely judge it by feel...thanks so much keep up the good work!
great video rick. Why don't Mizuno sell the majority of their clubs in left handed? I've been wanting to try the MP5 and now the 900 tour but can't.
They won't sell enough left-handed clubs to justify the costs of tooling.
Rick , keep,up the good work man looking forward to booking a lesson with you sometime love ur vids
I would love the Tour version of these clubs.
JPX 900 driver review please!! Like the looks of those though.
Getting fit for these in a few days! Time to trade the 850’s in
love the vids! ur the best!

great review very nice clubs but love my mp54's
He's not leaning forward as much in his follow through as he was in other videos, it looks like hes keeping his weight back. Any reason for this?
he recently changed his swing with a new lesson i believe
Love the look of these best looking club on the market wish I could afford them lol
I find that GC2 is overestimating the carry distance?? CMBelite-FR depends on your spin rate.. GC2 loves a low spinning shot and will give generous distance..
N LS
with a 6i, it was around 6000 rpm, so i think my 9i is around 9000
You are comparing apples with oranges: Rick's 4i with your 7i. my mp4 and new set of mp5 are the prettiest mizuno have made by far .

Rick... Boron = ability to make thinner face ... simple as that ... more trampoline effect
Paul Gerencher whilst maintaining softness
Cornwall1888 it doesnt maintain softness...it makes the steel harder to enable it to be made thinner to allow the trampoline effect. So u lose a little bit of the softness but these still feel fantastic 👍 as do all mizuno irons.
Adam Flynn that's what I mean they can strengthen the metal whilst maintaining the nice feel
This is what you do better than the rest review clubs RC

Test Ping iBlade vs Ping i !
you still working on your swing Rick?
Look great, but after your review not going to sell these on performance😔
looks a lot like the mx23 from 12? years ago or is that just me
Rick, thanks for your well-done videos.Been playing the 900 forged for a year now after trading in my 850 forged. They're (I'm ?) getting better all the time!dennis
Prettiest Mizuno clubs ever made? I should think not!
Nice job I wa t to be in one of your videos
Anyone play these? Feedback? Currently playing MP-30s.
Can the lie be bent on these?
Snapchat squad 💪🏻
I'd definitely call 31 degrees a strong 7 iron. It's the same loft as my 6 iron.
you must have either a player like iron or old set most 7 irons are around 31 32 today
I'm using a set of MP-37s - so both I guess. Basically a 4-GW set today is the same as a 3-PW with traditional lofts. Out on the course it doesn't matter which number is stamped on the sole of your clubs anyway. You just need to know your distances.

I have the 850's and a set of players irons. The 850's are barely a degree different from 6-7 with the players.
They really are great clubs.
