Not the true flying fish you find in Barbados or Trinidad; those are blue/green on top, with a white/silver bottom. What you caught is called a Sea Robin. Never thought about eating those, we used to always throw them back when caught.

It's called Sea Robin not no flying fish
Next time you go fishing try Riptide III.. 701 Minnieford Ave, Bronx, NY 10464. That fish is a Sea Robin a bottom feeder just like Porgies.. they walk on the sea floor. so they often outnumber and swarm the porgies and other target fish. They kind of taste like lobster. They make good fluke bait. But this time of the year you don't need to go on a boat to catch Porgies, anywhere along the seashore or pier with structure you will find them..
