On a rainy day in Jakarta, Ken and I headed over to a restaurant called Nasi Gandul IBu Endang, somewhere in the western part of Jakarta. The restaurant is a neighborhood restaurant known for serving a famous Indonesian dish, originally from Yogyakarta, called Gudeg, or Nasi Gudeg (because it’s served with rice). Gudeg is a jackfruit stew where the jackfruit is cooked for so long that it turns silky soft. It’s a bit of a sweet dish, but what I enjoyed so much about it was that it was so unique when paired with all the other different ingredients. The cowskin curry in particular was quite delicious.
Another dish they specialize in at Nasi Gandul IBu Endang is Nasi Rawon which is a black beef stew made with keluak nuts. I was a huge fan of the rawon, it has a rich and an amazing flavor and you eat it together with baby bean sprouts, lime juice, and sambal chili sauce. We also enjoyed a few other Indonesian dishes during out. meal at Nasi Gandul IBu Endang.
For our next stop, we headed over to Rumah Durian Harum, a well known spot for durian. They had just about every kind of durian you treat you can imagine, from durian juice to durian ice cream to fresh durian. We had the durian ice and a couple of fresh durian, all of which were pretty good and a nice way to end the evening.
Nasi Gandul IBu Endang
Address: Jalan Pesanggrahan No. 14, Puri Indah, Jakarta
Open hours: 8:30 am - 10 pm daily
Total price: 148,000 IDR ($11.10) for 4 people, and we ate a few different dishes.
Rumah Durian Harum
Total price - 165,000 IDR ($12.38)

just to clear things up, nothing personal. we share our foods not because we are cheap, or whatever. we do it because we are trying so many things in like a very short time . we as true food lovers do not like to waste our foods. Because there are people starving in many places, we cant just order everything and waste them. :) thank you Mark for anothet nice video!
Ahahaha, I figured as much. I'd do the same thing as well 😊 Don't take it personally, Ken. After all, this is RUclips's comment section, where humanity shows its worst. Anggap aja risiko artis 😉
its okay :) im not taking it too much. after all i am not a food master, i just enjoy foods and love to try foods! thanks to you though :)
Besides that Ken, everyone who watches Mark's vlogs knows he likes to eat family style so you can taste more things. Let the negative comments flow by you, there will always be someone stuck in their own ways with a need to correct others. Peace.
Jesmine, there is also something to be said about that. Being too clean and too much worry about hygiene is a problem in many places in the west. It causes our immune systems to become lazy. Just as the over use of antibacterial cleansers make bacterium stronger and then antibiotics are useless. I think Mark has lived this way long enough to handle it but I wouldn't recommend it for a sometimes tourist.
Ken my friends in INdonesia spell there last name Tjandra. is Chandra just easier for westerners to say/pronounce?? I'm studying Bahasa Indonesia and indonesia culture, so I'm only asking to learn. Makasih
Woww.. it's great to see you and Ken on this episode and the meals and durian look awesome
awesome Mark and Ying! its so great that you guys have reached 400k subscribers! well done, keep growing! and i said in a earlier comment, cant wait till 1million subs! :)
LOVE watching you enjoy!
Love your vlogs Mark. It would be great to see you get onto TV!!!!!!!!!! You have a lovely persona. I'd watch you for sure. Good luck for your future food adventures... can't wait to see more. :)
mantap sekali makanannya dari gudeg, garang asem, rawon, durian....mantap...mantap....hehehe...
I am a fan now Mark Wiens! Thanks for all these wonderful videos!
this local blogger is wrong, garang in garang asem doesn't mean scary, it's not bahasa, it's javanese so the garang means : cooked/heated
fallingstar135 setuju. kurang baca nih bloger
Bukan orang jawa. Seharusnya bertanya dahulu.
Emg si ken d bbrp vlog ny juga suka ngasal klo ngejabarin..
Emang ngawur
harap maklum bukan org jawa :-D
Gudeg sauce is similar like curry sauce, but has softer sweeter taste. no strong aroma like curry. but definitely delicious!!! popular cuisine of Jogjakarta, Central Java, Indonesia. love your channel, Mark
I like when you tilt your head Mark that is really telling us you enjoy the food .....yum
Nice video Mark. Love all the durian at the end!
Actually, I just finished cooking the beef rendang and mapo tofu for dinner, when i see the video you're eating on youtube, making my dinner more fun, thankz...
Mark, your editing just keeps getting better and better.
The desert part was lovely!!!
Mark, I LOVE your food reviews! Especially you reactions! I love going to Indonesia and trying so many different food there. I look forward to more video.
wooo looks wonderful!😍
Mark is a lovable guy. Even his fans that are featured on his shows in the places he visits acts like him! that's how loyal they are. they copy his bodily and face expressions and hmmms! what I like best about mark aside for describing the food to the point that you can actually TASTE IT, is his humbleness. I'm taking some life lessons on how to be humble from Mark.
never stop exploring indonesian street food and welcome to Jakarta Indinesia
Nice video dishes looks delicious as usual.
Interesting videos of this two eaters ! 😁😍😄
I love everything jackfruit so I'd probably be really into that Gudeg dish.
"Garang" in garang asem i think its from javanese language. it mean heated (or cooked maybe) over fire, so garang asem literally mean sour dish that heated over fire. but in bahasa indonesia garang means scary intimidating look like ken said, i like the javanesse translation better.
up you go, friend. i approve...
Ah, thank you for clearing that up! I was about to say something about this, but I thought 'garang' is Javanese for 'grill' ('garangan' itu 'pemanggang' toh?) so I was confused as garang asem is obviously not grilled.
Me right behind you. The word "garang" is for Javanese "to cook" and not for Bahasa Indonesia "scary". Hope Mark read our comments.
I like how Ken is waiting for Mark's reaction lols
because he knows the food tastes bad
@Deden rahman its bad. i have eaten indon food and theyre weird except for Rendang maybe.

I Love Gudeg ❤️
@Mark Wiens , if you want to eat the real gudeg Jogja, you must come to Yogyakarta, because gudeg is tradisional food of Jogya.
Beside gudeg, we have a Oseng oseng mercon (Super Spicy beef) dan other extreme culinary.
You must try sate klathak, that is a lamb grill like a sukiyaki

Belah duren emg bikin ngiler gan 😋😋😋
Almost 400k yay!
Wouuu make me hungry
Mark, the cow skin is called "Krecek" in java. You should come to central java next time you go in to Indonesia. Another thing you should ty is Nasi Tumpang Koyor :) love your post and videos!
I'm glad that Mark tried my favoried foods; gudeg, garang asem, rawon. The first dish is looked like nasi gandul (as the name of the place). Rawon usually accompanied with salted egg. But both nasi gandul and nasi rawon is pretty similar.
rawon has kluwak inside the soup, mark..
the same fruit (?) when you had the perananakan dish in singapore..
Almost all of my western friends didn't seem love Indinesian foods even Rendang, and they hate durian. The only local food they really enjoyed was sate ayam without its main sauce (peanut sauce). you are amazing.
My favorite food nasi rawon hahaha..
mantap khas Jogja
Interesting video
I have to say the third meal with cow skin good and every time you and the guy eat ,both you guy look at each other and agreed the food taste good
Kapan ke Indonesia... coba dong main ke Surabaya banyak kulinernya enak2 ..
Mark is an Amazing person his body language tell his personality and love to watch his viedo I am a big fan of Mark
one of stereotypes of javanese people is that javanese people really like sweet , thats the reason why almost all javanese dishes is have sweet dominant flavor, but as javaneseman, i dont really into sweet meal :V
Balya Alim. Some taste nice with sugar, like satay and gado gado sauce that to me tastes good when it is sweet, nutty and spicy.
*I LOVE DURIAN!! yummyyyyyyyXDDDD*
mark so good and thanx
Good idea: watching Mark reviewing all these delicious food.
Bad idea: watching him during fasting in Ramadan!!!

great video. Just a suggestion. Maybe good to feature in your video a guest or guide that could provide a little bit of description on the food you were tasting. I saw some of your video and there are some error, not big significant error, in the information you or your companion mention in your video. I may be just a bit too enthusiast, but overall, good job :)
Excellent video as usual. Ken seems like a great guy. Congrats on 400K Wiens.
enjoy jakarta 😀😀😀😀

Thanks Melisa
rawon... that's the remarkable soup in Indonesia. i think that second champion food after beef rendang
cool video👏
mark kesukaannya makanan yg pedas2..
Mark your friend Ken, maybe is a food blogger but I think he only expert in eating, since his explanation is wrong exeptionally wrong, for instance gudeg is not a stew, its a combination of several foods that can be eaten separately or together, he did mention chicken, egg, jackfruit, cow skin (krecek) which can be very spicy, gudeg is made using coconut milk His explanation of rawon is very rudimentary. Its a dish from East Java, using the kluwek fruit. Garang is literal translation to Bahasa Indonesia. And his choice of restaurants is concentrated in WestJakarta, there are lot of places in other parts of Jakarta. His mistakes are not only in this video but in other videos.I like it better when you present alone, like the soto betawi, konro etc,
jogja food is ussually sweet
love gudeg 😍
hello mark
june 2021 watching here in Philippines
thank you for blog I got some ideas,
Waw ken and great
actually, gudeg is made from young jackfruit which is initially sour. the chefs have add sweeteners to the stewed young jackfruit. there is also a young jackfruit dish in malaysia called gulai nangka. gulai is almost like a curry but the only difference is there is more amount of rich coconut milk being added to it. i had watched luke nguyen's mekong cooking show, demonstrating his steps to make a northern thai young jackfruit salad as his offering for monks in chiang mai few years ago. of course, we have to cut and boil the unripe jackfruit in order to remove its sourness as well as its sticky sap.
as i said in the early video, you may want to go to yogyakarta in central java not only to try out the gudeg but also other famous local dishes there as well as to visit the famous borobudur budhhist temple, hindu prambanan temple and the active merapi volcano.
Thanks a lot Yong!
Mark Wiens. As a finale to your Indonesian culinary journey, check out the noodle shops that allow you to partake in the hottest/spiciest noodles that they serve. No sugar added at all. I'm sure it will take you to another level of culinary adventure that's hard to forget. Only in Indonesia.
