- Check out my blog post about Warung Mak Dower► migrationology.com/betawi-foo...
When I was in Jakarta, along with eating all sorts of regional Indonesian food from around the country, I really wanted to eat a full spread of Betawi dishes, which are the people originally from the Jakarta area.
After doing some research I came across Warung Mak Dower, and decided to take the trip from across Jakarta to eat there. It was well worth visiting, and the food was incredible.
Here are the dishes I ordered:
Sayur asem (vegetable tamarind soup)
Ikan cue goreng bawang (fried fish with shallots)
Cumi asin lenong (salted squid dish)
Jengkol nampol (dogfruit chili)
Pete goreng (fried stink beans)
Pete bawang (stink beans and fried shallots)
Everything was pretty good, but nothing compared to the dishes that included stink beans and crispy shallots, and the jengkol nampol, a dish of cooked dogfruit in lots of chili and garlic. It was simply an overload of flavor.
Warung Mak Dower is a great friendly family run Betawi restaurant that’s well worth checking out when you’re in Jakarta.
Warung Mak Dower
Address: Jl. Pemuda No. 72, Rawamangun, Jakarta

Total price: 140,800 IDR ($10.33)

Karena makanan yg dia makan selalu dipilih yg paling enak di daerah itu begitu jg dgn rumah makannya spy bs jd referensi orang lain yg singgah di tempat itu dan kebanyakan daerah wisata

The way Mark takes to the special places and foods he eats is simply the best. Relaxing, informative and complete shared passion. One of a kind mate, keep it up! My invitation to Melbourne still stands haha.
I really enjoy watching your videos, especially this one since you review more vegetable dishes compared to other videos. I'd love to see more vegetable, plant based dishes in the future!
Your expression of DOWER is priceless hahaha Love it!
The best thing about your videos is that you can make cheap street food goes to a higher level.
Thank you for visiting Jakarta, Mark!
Mark Weins I love your videos.Eating different foods can be such a joy.Sadly many people stick to their own and never try anything different.Youre doing great work in making ordinary food in different countries, extraordinary.Keep smiling.
so grateful for your videos keep up the good work mark
Thank you!
I would put 3 different photos of Mark's expressions into those empty picture frames behind him.
I love watching your videos mark, they are inspiring me to begin planning trips just for the food!
Wow, this one takes the no. 1 spot of all Indonesian series videos. Great job Mark !
1:51-1:53 you got confused whether it was melon or potato, and then you thought it was melon, but it is neither melon nor potato. It is chayote, or Indonesian people usually call it 'labu siam'. It is also used in some Indonesian food, particularly soup, such as sayur lodeh (soup cooked with coconut milk), sayur bening (without coconut milk), and sayur asem that you ate. You have to taste sayur lodeh, it is very delicious! Indonesian people eat it when Lebaran (Ied Mubarak). When Lebaran, we usually eat it with ketupat (rice cooked and shaped like diamond) or lontong (rice cooked and shaped like tube).
you guys call it labu siam as well? cool... XD
Muhammad Faisal or green papaya..
scott fluto no... chayote or squash is different from green papaya, they have similar texture when shredded but actually different
It is called jicama (labu siam) in the US. Jicama maybe imported from Mexico or grown in southern part of US
whisnu triwibowo jicama different from chayote ....jicama is bangkoang and its fruit
I noticed indonesia has similar names to the filipino culture.. Example:
Asem: "tamarind sour soup".. In tagalog, asim means "sour", but that soup is similar to our "sinigang".
Pete Bawang: "stink beans and shallots", in tagalog, garlic is "bawang".
Anyway.. Lol i just thought it was really interesting. Not familiar with its history, just saw coincidence?
Hope Ur having a great time Mark! Love ur vids!
Filipino and Malay (Indonesian and Malaysian language) came from the same Austronesian language root. that's why many words are similar. like for example our word for expensive is mahal, door is pintu, and umbrella is payung.
+Michael Panggabean thanks for the info! Thats really good to know hehe! Explains my curiosity..
yes dear our language is almost the same....and our food also the almost the same taste.sinigang same with us sayur asem but for us little bit taste sweet sour spicy.but sinigang like mostly sour taste.I love also ur Filipino food all.kare kare beef. pancit bihon..I try all the filipine food.it's make me feel so missed my Indonesian food.
Isang bansa isang diwa
Bawang is garlic too in indonesia😐🤔🤔
can't believe that it is your last video of foods in Jakarta. still craving for more food videos in Jakarta. well done Mark. I extremely enjoyed all of it.
Another excellent food video Mark! Enjoyed watching all your Indonesian food series :) Keep it up !
Man, you love spices and tangy spicy sauces. That's why I'm really looking for your videos in India.
In Malaysia, Jengkol is called Jering..Sambal jering is one of the best dishes.. The young/unripe Jering is much crispier!
As for Petai, we love to cook it with shrimp in Sambal..
The Betawi food-they do look tempting!
yeah. in javanese, it call Jering too.
in Sumatra its also called Jering or Jariang or Joriang depend on accent
Honey NHS sometimes we called it kancing levi's (levi's button)
jering lebih sedap dari petai. sebab rasa die lagi lemak. errhhhh!!!! rindu nak makan jering
Honey NHS in antartika its called kontole
Your video brighten up my day! Thanks mate
your food journey in indonesia is awesome. and when you say whenever you eat petai and jengkol you would be happy. You are sure one of a kind
Bahahaha i love the way you explain the meaning of "dower" :DD
Love the warning. Nice tease. 👍
Hehe, thanks Tosh!

Very nice meal Mark & Ying! Everything looked delicious.
'just pure happy vitamins'
-Mark Wiens, 2016

Loving this show. Keep it up mark.
I am going to have jengkol and pete for my meal this evening.
Yes I will.
Definitely I will.
Can't stop drooling.
You're the best, Mark!!
just a pointer that all Indonesian cuisine have the tendency to be a bit saltier because the dish are suppose to be eaten with rice...if you eat it individually it will become to salty to eat.
aaaannnnnnnddddd all dish you must.
.I say MUST eat with sambal
when you eat that that raw Pete without rice..I am Indonesian and I can't do that...so standing ovation for you mark.
even though I'm fasting i love watching you eat indonesian food
I love your videos. they are great. I showed them to my wife and she liked them as well. thanks for sharing these nice videos.
anyway your videos inspired me to become food blogger :p
Mark, this is a great video and seems to be one of the better meals you've had on your trip?
PS love your hair!
The stink beans is called 'Petai' in Malaysia. It used to growth naturally. However, these days, people would grow Petai on the farms. Me personally, really love Petai. The smelly the Petai is, the better. Petai that grows naturally at forest always smelly-er than the one people grows at farms.
How long was your trip to Indonesia?
dude. i so love your facial expression when u eat. you make me so hungry. love your videos
Wow, everything looks so delicious! Love your videos Mark ☺
Thank you Ami.
Warung Mak Dower I need to remember that term next time I'm in Indonesia eating their tasty foods.
When I first started watching your videos, I used to think, oh I'd never try that or the odd time some ingredients just yuck. Now today for example I'd try everything even the really spicy foods. Yes even the stuff I used to think of as "yucky."
That is awesome to hear Janice!
Thanks for showing us in all these different places and allowing us to explore delicious cuisines with you! You are my new favorite youtuber, glad I found this channel (:
JANICE BALL
Jengkol and Pete is the magical things in this world ... I can stop eating when I ate with sayur asem, jengkol or Pete , salty fish / tongkol, sambal and warmth rice ... Heaven
I always smile & felt hungry when watching your video, mark!
In sayur asem or vegetable soup, when mark wiens said "it is a melon" it should be pumpkin. Thank for visit our country
farhan khairan that is chayote actually
farhan khairan pumpkin is different kind of vege
That is papaya
If Mark said "quite spicy" it means that is really freaking spicy
idk which one i love most: mark's reactions--his body goes sideways after every single bite, or the food itself lol
think i love both :) thx for your adventure , Mark. Makes me miss Jakarta :) cheers from Canada
Awesome video mark
hi mark,, maybe you can make vlog collaboration with sacha stevenson.. will be very memorable, you can see her video. GBU :)
I need the shirt. "If it's not spicy, I'm not eating"
This video is what I'm looking for.. I am Betawi girl and living in Europe. Happy to see you enjoying eating these food and I'm really enjoy to see your video. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

The Stink beans are called petai in Malaysia & Singapore and cooked with sambal prawn is just insane
The right way to write in Indonesian is also "petai". "Pete" is the way Betawi Malays people say it.
Hi, Mark! I love your videos!
love your beautiful family, its nice that you get to go on a epic journey on tasting all the yummy and spicy foods around the world.
the way you pronounce "Mak Dower" sounds like "McDower" :D
Thought so :'D
Or "MacDower", and it like scottish clan/family name right?
"My name is Mamat from McDower clan of the Highlands!"
Disingkat McD
McDonald's nya Betawi wkwkw
indonesian food best ever ......
I'm really happy that you like stink beans because that also my favorite food. I really like it because the flavor is really unique and you can eat it with anything, even instant noodles.
Mark, in case you're still wondering, the salty flavor in the Squid dish is the flavor that the dish wanted to enhance. "Asin" means Salty, hence the name "Cumi Asin"
i really love the way you described all the foods, it's just make me wanna try so badly.. but not the jengkol...
Thank you Ernest.
are you still at jakarta? maybe we could have lunch together
Matkiding X Mark Wiens

Makes me so happy when whatching you eating Mark :D
I love looking at your expressions to show delicacy.
Jengkol - jering in bahasa malaysia
Stink beans - petai
kayramya abdulrahman jengkol dalam bahasa sunda is jering
So the restaurant name would translate to "Mother Pucker"??? LOL
Dower means thick lips..so MAK DOWER thick lips mother..(naahh more n less)😁😁😁
Great video, loved the food.
im very happy right now too Mark knowing that you like pete and jengkol as much as i do
Makan pete sama jengkol aja sampek bilang "oh yeeaah" 😂 . You just over react 😕
But i love to watch your channel, it makes me hungry all the time 😂.
Its so annoying when he tries something, goes ahhhh and tilts his head every time...
Not really, I don't remember him tilt his head when he eating sweet foods (And also the one on the Ultimate Indonesian Food Day Trip video)
its Funny bro and that is characteristic of Mark and every movement has a meaning, when his head is further on the right side, its mean the food is stunning.. :D :D :D :D
Yes, and there are subtle changes throughout that all mean something. There are times he likes something when he first puts it in his mouth and then you can see on his face as the taste develops he doesn't care for it. I love the times when it takes a few seconds for the full awesomeness of a dish to hit him. Then his eyes close, the head tilt, and a smile, that's how we know he's feeling some food nirvana. Some people don't naturally notice the nuances, as our brains all work differently, so it looks the same to them. Celebrate our individuality! :^)
Your comment is annoying... 🖕🏻
wallahi , shut up before i tell your allah
I learn Some traditional food from this chanel,Thanks Mark.
I'm Indonesian but still need to think twice before I go to eat Jenkol and Petai, lots of Sambal also make me sweat a lot. Two thumbs up for your bravery Mark.
