Indonesia Food - STUNNING Fish Head Curry at Rumah Makan Medan Baru in Jakarta, Indonesia!

- Fish head curry is one of my favorite things to eat in the entire world. So when I was in Jakarta, I went to a restaurant called Rumah Makan Medan Baru specifically to eat their famous fish head curry. Read my full Jakarta travel guide for food lovers here: migrationology....
Rumah Makan Medan Baru
Located just north of the Jakarta National Monument, Rumah Makan Medan Baru is a popular Indonesian Medanese restaurant that is known for serving gulai kepala ikan (fish head curry). From the outside of the restaurant it looks very small and just like a shop house. So I was surprised when I walked in to find multiple dining rooms, lots of tables, and lots of happy customers eating curry. Most of the curries and dishes are all prepared and sitting at the front of the restaurant, and when you sit down, you’ll be delivered a selection of different dishes all to your table.
The gulai kepala ikan (fish head curry) was absolutely incredible - one of the best versions of any fish head I’ve ever head. The fish head was covered in an almost ridiculously rich and creamy coconut milk curry that was very fragrant and flavorful. The fish was also very meaty and juicy. Along with rice, it was sensational.
Another dish that Medan Baru is famous for is burung punai goreng (fried pigeon). We got two of them, and they were seasoned with some spices and then fully deep fried to a crisp. Again, the little pigeons, even though there’s not a lot of meat to eat on them, the meat that was there was so succulent. I loved it. For some bites of the fried pigeon, I dipped it into the different sambal chili sauces that were on our table as well. Both dishes were extraordinary.
Additionally I also got a bowl of daun pepaya (papaya leaves), that were a little bitter, but went really well with the sambal as well. Finally, I ordered a plate of gulai daun singkong (curry cassava leaves), which were also fantastic.
Total price for everything - 406,000 IDR ($30.69) - Rumah Makan Medan Baru is not a cheap restaurant in Jakarta, but it definitely serves one of the best fish head curries in Jakarta, maybe in the world.

Mark Wiens, thank you for making these videos about Indonesian food. I'm an Indonesian myself, and I'm currently studying abroad. I missed those food a lot, so thank you for reviewing and commenting on the food from your perspective. It adds a lot to my appreciation and understanding of my own culture's cuisine. Fish head is one of the food that when I grow up back there, had been taken for granted by a few people of my generation including me, just because we think that it's something that only the grown ups or old men would eat. But now it's gonna' be one of the things that I'd look for when I come home, and share with my Dad.
By the way, do you know/have you tried Bakmi Ayam Alok? Noodle/bakmi is my all time favorite food, and this one and Bakmi Ayam Asui are my top 2 bakmi restaurant. I saw you tried several bakmi places in Thailand so you should definitely try these as well, although it might be quite far from your place. These are the addresses, Bakmi Ayam Asui(Jl. That curry with coconut must have been truly amazing. I never imagine people eat pigeon. When I was younger, from time to time, I would catch pigeons because they were so easy or gullible to walk into a trap or to fly into my bedroom But in the end I always released them. I sure missed out on a lot of curry pigeons.

Just found this video and bring back my childhood memory of the neighborhood in this area. Cause few house down the road from the restaurant is where I was born & live and across the street from the restaurant is where my uncle live till now. I also have a very fond memory of buying take away & eating padang food from this restaurant. And my favorite dish is their chicken curry

The fish is Baramundi as we call it in Australia. it was called white snapper in Indonesia, but not a common name elsewhere because snapper is mainly associated with red snapper.

Indonesian GULAI is not the same as curry. GULAI using fresh turmeric while curry using turmeric powder. Taste is very different.
Gulai is more familiar and everyone likes than curry india
Gulai is more like East European's Goulash.
Sir, i don't know what are you talking about, but curry is a dish that is prepared with a thick gravy like sauce that use herbs, spices and chillies. A dish can be called a curry even without any turmeric.
Gulai is type of curry, sir. So does rendang, opor, etc. It's consider as type of curry

Can't believe it.... finally someone brought up this restaurant "Medan Baru" on you tube. This is one of the most most most favored Padang Restaurant in Jakarta especially for the "head kakap gule".... 25s years ago I used to eat there during lunch hours, one of the waiter/owner always bragged that they have a sort of salsa (sambal) specially made with marijuana in it..., however after a while they quit of bragging about that ingredient. I am glad, you as a foreigner had the chance to eat there and even more enjoy it.... Thank you for the posting on behalf of Indonesian.

Mark, I live in Jakarta and we know this famous Gulai Head Fish in Medan Baru Restaurant.
This is well known that this menu is made from cannabis leaves/seeds, because it is normal in North Sumatera and Aceh to use cannabis for the food herbs.
We know this is true in North Sumatera, but we don't know in Medan baru (now), maybe many years ago they had it, but I am not sure for now.
Their fish head gulai are good, very fresh and taste very very light curry taste.
There it is....there it is!......THE WIENS LEAN!......Meal is quality approved.....
I like the way you enjoy every food that you eat even you just taste the food for the first time..
Give mark food with a lot of spices, not sweet no no no n not too salty, very savory, n if u have fresh seafood like shrimps oh he'll love it, SPICY YES SPICY is a must n have a lot of interesting bursting flavorful taste and he is good to go. Oh yah he likes his green veges too so give him that a lot too. Now he can do that satisfying good food expression :D

Mark indonesian food not just from Java, Kalimanatan nor Sumatra. there is many other island in Indonesia with good food. like Sulawesi island. representative foods. Soup konro , nasi kuning ambon dan manado . Tinutuan , mie cakalang , ragey , coto makasar and etc. Try Gado gado too its healthy and delicious!

Tess Cooks 4u I don't know what kind curry it is but fish head Curry in Indonesia is made with turmeric, coconut milk, lemongrass, bay leaves, cloves, nutmeg, red and green chillies, lime leaves, garlic, onion, and some other ingredients.
I think it's not very different to Indian curry, the main difference is only the coconut milk.
Its called gulai here

I am not sure what kind of pigeon they serve in that restaurant, but 'punai' actually refers to 'green pigeons' which are not really the same birds you see in the cities.

Hai Mark, that sour sambal is the most famous sambal from Medan Baru. Lucky that you got it during your visit coz it's like seasonal sambal. It's called "sambal Ganja" (im not sure if there's a real ganja leaf in it, or just a name) that you should it with the fish head curry..

you came to the right place Mark. This is my favourite restaurant in Jakarta. nothing beat this restaurant.
I really strongly recommend you to go to Nasi Goreng Kebon Sirih (the best Nasi Goreng ever). it opens only after 7. it is not really a restaurant but a street food and it attracts people from the very rich (you will see many Mercedes Benz and BMW park just in front of the vendor) to common people go here
