Nasi Uduk (Coconut Rice) and Fried Chicken in Jakarta

  • Check out my Jakarta travel guide for food lovers: migrationology....
Rice is the main staple in most of Indonesia, but there are many different versions and preparations of rice. One of the versions I love the most is called nasi uduk, rice, that’s cooked with a variety of fragrant herbs and spices, and the main ingredient: coconut milk. This gives the rice a more rich taste and texture. You’ll find nasi uduk all over Jakarta, but I went to a restaurant called Nasi Uduk Ayam Goreng Zainal Fanani.
Restoran Zainal Fanani - Nasi Uduk, Ayam Goreng
This was one of my first meals in Jakarta, and I wasn’t sure exactly how to order as soon as I arrived to the restaurant, but luckily I soon figured it out. At the front of the restaurant they had a cabinet full of fried chicken parts and other assorted deep fried things. First, you go up to the front and choose the different pieces of chicken and things you want to eat. Once you pick out your choice, they will all be deep fried fresh and served to you on your table hot and fresh.
At Zainal Fanani restaurant, the nasi uduk was all sitting on the table already, in communal trays, and the rice was packed into little banana leaf portions, and topped with crispy fried shallots. You could grab as many as packets of the coconut rice as you liked during your meal. I started off by just tasting the rice - the rice was wonderful, and not only could I just taste the coconut milk, but I could also taste some fragrant spices like cardamom and bay leaves. The rice was fantastic.
Along with the nasi uduk, I also got a couple different deep fried items including ayam goreng, which is deep fried chicken, and a piece of fried tofu and tempe. All the fried items were salty and a little oily, and very tasty. Finally, to complete my nasi uduk and ayam goreng meal there were a number of different sambal chili sauces on the table, which were all very flavorful and went with the fried chicken and rice very well.
    Total price - 75,000 IDR ($5.74) for 2

I want to say a huge thank you for your overwhelming welcome and support in Indonesia. I am extremely grateful.
Ying and I were in Jakarta back in February (a few months ago), so we are not there anymore - sorry about the confusion. It takes me some time to process all the videos, so that’s why they are being published now.
Thank you very much for all your invitations and recommendations (which I will take note of and use in the future), and I hope to visit Indonesia again, and I’d love to meet each of you.
We had an incredible trip, and Indonesian food remains one of my favorite cuisines in the world.
That being said, stay tuned for many more Indonesian food videos every Sunday, Wednesday, and Friday!

As an Indonesian living abroad, it makes me feel warm, fuzzy, nostalgic, and perhaps slightly tortured watching them. #sigh I really hope you enjoyed your time there and I'm sure Indonesia will always welcome you whenever you decide to go back there.

Indonesia is a big country, very diversed, go to some of very famous provinces, taste their traditional cuisine and visit a lot of amazing destination here.. This is not really typically Indonesian foods, and situation, you SHOULD try EVERYTHING here, and that should be the best of all! Anyway as always, amazing video and awesome work!! +Mark Wiens You should definitely try these food while in Jakarta:
    1. Laksa Betawi at Jalan Asirot in West Jakarta, probably a bit far from your apartment. But it will show a different style from the Malaysian and Thailand Laksa.
    2. Sop Buntut (Oxtail Soup) at Dapur Buntut at Jalan KH Abdullah Safei near the Casablanca Road area. I recommend the Caramel Black Pepper Oxtail Soup.. Super yummy..
    3. Soto Betawi Sambung Nikmat Haji Ridwan at Jalan Ciputat Raya No 2, RT. 01/ 07, Pondok Pinang.
I think these three restaurants are best representatives of Indonesian authentic food. You can google them too.. Enjoy your stay in Jakarta!

Great Job Mark for promoting Indonesian Food!!! It's really a lot of nice food here in Indonesia, but lack of effort from the industry in terms of promoting it to the world e.g. for most Indonesian, Nasi Uduk is as good as Malaysian Nasi Lemak if not better, but I have to admit that Nasi Lemak is more famous. And the fact that more Indonesian food are also very hot and spicy, not very much to the liking of other nations' tastebuds, this is also a major deterrent sometimes ....But your video really an honest testimonial that anybody who savour the good food, should try Indonesian Food. Awesome Mark!

If what you really mean by 'free range muscular' you mean tough... that just means it was freshly butchered a few hours earlier. Soft meat happens by allowing it to rest in a cold place for 2-3 days until the rigor leaves the muscle. After 2-3 days you can tell the meat has softened because the joints bend easily and the limb will easily flop around. Before that they are stiff and dont bend without pressure.

hi mark, i'm from jakarta indonesia, our food traders sell chicken using a free range chicken ( chiken village) , because it's healthier so the chiken so small, but the tasty very good. different from the chicken that is usually sold in the market for steaks and other fried chicken, it uses laying hens or cut chicken as they are called, it is not healthy because it is big and fat because of forced injection and fattening

Greetings from Texas 🇺🇸! Hey mark, you should have a t-shirt made up that says either "it's ok to play with your food, to get the perfect bite", or "I don't mind using my fingers to eat with" 😆

I've spent quite a bit of time living locally in Indonesia. I like Indonesian cooking very much, but if I never had another piece of tempeh or deepfried tofu - let's just say my world would not exactly fall apart ...

indonesia have many amazing food to try, some are amazing but not popular enough. Maybe if you take a visit to indonesia again , you should try to go to another city or island like sumatera, bali, borneo, etc.

On fried chicken, there is a unique Indonesian dish from Yogyakarta (Central Java) called "Ayam Goreng Mbok Berek" which is topped with crispy tapioca flour-spice mix. I think you'll love it.

tempeh is delicious. the soybeans are inoculated and bound together with a fluffy white fungus
culture that sort of reminds me of the rind on brie cheese. it makes for a GREAT burger. there are different types -- straight soybean, soybean with various grains -- and it can taste a bit more sour the longer it's aged. I adore it. your videos make me so hungry.

There's an option to pour the peanut sauce into the rice to make it more flavourful, that's why they served in on the table 😉😉
