What a strange world we live in. The fact that this movie is 11 years old and still stands really high as a very underrated movie that had to try, while the new movie is an obnoxious dumpster fire
Just watched it, I thought it was a great film, had good action, well acted, funny at times yet still had an emotion and heart. Overall a very enjoyable film.
One of my favorite parts of The Avengers was when Loki says "I'm not overly fond of was follows" After Captain america asks him if he's afraid of lightning.
I loved this movie, I saw at a midnight showing and it blew me away. I'm a comic book guy and I always thought that Thor was best when he was part of a team because he's so boring by himself but this movie totally changed my view on him and I liked how they added in all the subtle Avengers plot lines and characters which was done very elegantly. Natalie Portman or N.P. was great, I loved how she was more then eye candy she was smart and the future love triangle with her Sif & Thor will be nice.
Epic movie with great acting by the entire cast, specially Hemsworth and Hiddleston. Also, The Destroyer looked beyond perfect. Straight out of the comicbooks.
The whole HISTORY of Marvel Comics is that their heroes are imperfect. Therefore, to be able to relate to Thor when he's at his low point is no surprise. ALL of the Marvel heroes/heroines are that way. Which is why, to my not-so-humble opinion, Marvel has better writers than DC. And which is why Marvel's movies are kicking the DC movies around the block.
I can hear the Loki Fangirls running to Loki's aid... "He didn't usurp the throne, he was given it by Frigga!" Deleted scenes... that shouldn't have been deleted. Hm, maybe they can be added in a future *Loki* movie one day, since, you know, this was a *Thor* movie and told from Thor's point of view, mostly...? I'm not sure. Don't quote me on anything xD
my least favorite of the pre-avengers movies, second least favorite mcu movie after thor:the dark world. Here's hoping Ragnarok delivers, because Thor has easily the weakest solo outings out of any of them, which is sad given than i think it has the best villain, and hemsworth himself does a really good job. I think it all really comes down to script, and the fact that i think the asgard storylines and all the non-earth releated stuff (dark elves, either, etc) is not as compelling as the "mundane" earth stuff. Anyway, was watching a marathon of all MCU movies recently, and i go through Thor fine, but the dark world i actually had to fastforward.
Meh. That was my movie rating of Thor. Whole premise of him losing powers was OK, characters, humor, passable. Villain-story arc so-so. Where movie fails imo is it's depiction of Asgard, norse pantheon and - props, whole deal looks kinda cheap and like they didn't want to bother too much. Wasn't nearly as epic or badass I've expected /it deserves. They should even make it better or not show it at all.
I re-watched this after seeing The Dark World and really this one and the sequel are two very different movies. The easiest way to summarize it would be that: Thor is more character driven where as Thor 2 is more plot driven. Thor doesn't go through any change in the sequel. What I am saying is, I love the first one and I love the second one. However, if there was a gun to my head I would say Thor (1st one) was the better movie since it was character driven and we saw the journey of Thor transforming from a God to a mortal and finding his inner God again. It was really cool and well adapted from the comics.
My main problem with the second was that it lost some of its Asgardian feel. I didn't get the Shakespearean tone from the first movie, which bothered me. It just bothered me hearing Thor saying modern slang terms.
I liked the second one. It was based more on asgard which is good and more about thors magical world outside of earth which we see too much in other avengars. I understand it had no character development, I agree with u pointing that out, but what it did have was development between characters. You can see that Thor becomes wiser than his dad, you can see the relationship between Natalie Portman and thor becoming further away and she starts dating again, you can see the heartless relationship between Loki and Odin and the interesting relationship between loki and his father. Then, the icing on the cake, the amazing still relatable humanly but godly at the same time kind of chemistry you will never find in DC, the relationship between Loki and Thor and how that went up and down through the film. Over all that was the "character development" for me. And I feel the film had a morepowerful story and was based on a magical realm not just earth so it was a cooler movie, not to mention more funny and the actors did an exeptional job here.
I swear I saw no chemistry, this part seemed bland, there was a moment that I was like: My god, I think I'll fall in love with Thor because she is trying too hard and I just don't see it happening so she must be trying to convince me and I just feel bad for her!
This movie was all clever with “there’s no distinction between science and magic” except for the fact that in newer MCU movies science and magic are clearly two completely separate concepts. Unless we’re saying Scarlett Witch’s magic is actually just some super high tech weapon. Or Dr Strange is not mystical, he’s drawing from future tech power that were too primitive to understand. No. It’s just bloody magic!
I just rewatched this and I really don’t like it, the Dutch angles makes the cinematography so awkward to me, and I didn’t like any of the characters except Thor and Loki, the sound effects sound really awkward and cgi looks incomplete at times, but I liked the story and how Thor’s actions leads to consequences, but that’s just me.
@chevypillow247 maybe...and I'm taking a stab at this, just maybe....this movie was made for comic book fans who enjoy watching heroes punch things and smash stuff, and not as much the audience who are looking for something clever, witty and down to earth...did you consider that?
Wow, really? Awesometacular? This movie was easily the worst out of the Avengers set ups, and to me it felt like, 'Oh, we need Thor in the Avengers. I guess we have to do a Thor setup and hope that it maybe breaks even."
Yell, yeah, because it was like that. To the big-names behind the production. That does not mean the film or those creating were not excited and passionate for it. In fact, there is a huge amounts of fan-service in the movie that only hardcore Thor fans would catch. It also doesn't mean the movie has to be bad, because, generally speaking, Thor was pretty widely-accepted as a success. As a film, it's very different from the other MCU movies, it isn't as a Superhero-y as one might think, which caught some people off-guard.
how is thor linked to the avengers? did i miss something in the movie cuz im pretty sure that he cant come back to earth at the end of the movie, somebody tell me please?
I didn't like this movie at all. I'm not a very a big Thor fan anyway, but I thought for a second it would change my mind. The main fight of the movie is like a boss battle, and the only joke I remember in the movie is where Natalie Portman's annoying friend makes some joke about him being hot.
"You don't want to deplete the currency. If you see it too much then you're not gonna appreciate it when you do see it." That's a note to Michael Bay right there.
I agree. I found nothing really redeeming about it when I first watched it. But then came the Avengers which let the characters Thor and Loki shine in my opinion and when Thor: The Dark World came out I really started to like the world and lore independent of the other Avengers. Now, the first Thor movie is passable for me, because it was a stepping stone to better things.
I'm a comic book fan so I LOVE this movie. Whe you're a comic geek and you just see those things you wanna see, it's the best feeling ever. I understand why some regular movie goers didn't like it though, but that's cuz you don't know what you're watching.
I think some people dislike the Marvel films, saying that they're CGI romps meant for 6 year olds. Well, I'm a bit sick of everyone thinking superhero films have to be "dark" all the time. TDK was pure genius, but I liked Thor for exactly that reason- it had its intense moments but it wasn't afraid to be fluffy and light and wasn't taking itself too seriously. I thoroughly enjoyed it and didn't expect to. Good review, as always.
actually don't think Loki was very good in this movie and if you just watch this one you woudn't really get why fans love the character so much. I mean, i think he was fine as a villain, but not amazing at all. He really came into his own in Avengers, and was the only thing worth watching in the dark world.
I will say this, I thought the final showdown was just meh. However, that scene where Thor gets his powers back and kills the automaton is one of the best scenes in a movie I have ever seen, that was fucking spectacular! That should have been the final showdown!
Thor one is way better than Green Lantern, Batman forever and Batman&Robin. iron man one is better than Dark knight rises. I think marvel is winner..DC is sloppy second:)
What xD you took the worse of the Nolan trilogy and said it was worse than the best of the Iron Man trilogy. I think that sums up how the other two Batman movies are so good even a marvel fan doesn't want to mention them in a ''who's better'' debate :P.
You forgot to mention one thing Jeremy: it's great for newcomers and people who know the lore. One friend, knew nothing of Norse mythology or the comics and loved it. I haven't read the comics, know Norse mythology, and loved it. Another friend knows Norse mythology, read the comic books, and loved it. It worked for all of us, and we didn't have to explain anything to anyone
Hi Jeremy Good review, I really liked Thor. I never actually knew the whole story behind the character but now I do and as you said it is awesomtacular. Regards Gerann
As both a swedish guy who learned norse mythologie the same way american kids learn about ( you know, several times in school and through tv-specials) and a comic book enthusiast, i frigging loved it. Everything was done right and stayed true to both the myths and the version created by stan lee and Jack Kirby (as true as you can be to both at the same time). Also the stinger after the credits made have a nergasm and geek-out. and that´s really rare in my case.
How is this awesometacular? I definitely would not call this a masterpiece. I know it’s just your opinion... but would you really put this up there with Empire Strikes Back and LOTR?
I think this movie is okay, but not as good as I hope. The main problem I had was probably with Loki. Don't get me wrong he is an awesome God character, it's just that he didn't seem like the God of Mischief to me. He didn't seem mischievous at all! Maybe it's just me and the Loki in Supernatural TVseries leaving a too huge impression on me.
I really like Loki. And I like Jim Carrey too, but compared to Loki, I don't like him that much. But that is no reason to call Jim Carrey non talented. Or a fool.
I liked the chemistry between Hemsworth and Portman, but the romance does happen rather fast. But,it was said that when they tackle the romance again in the sequel, they will recognize that it was just kind of a,you know,a crush. Or either they are trying to correct the script deficiencies from the first movie or it was always intended to be like that. Much more likely to be the former, but it's still some smart writing right there.
I like Shakeseparian stuff in movies (Gladiator, The lion king...) that's why I loved this movie. And Loki is one of my favourites villains of all times. Such a tragic character like Commodus from Gladiator but less evil and more powerful.
Iron Man 2, Thor, and Captain America all felt like trailers and prequels to the Avengers movie IMO. The first Iron Man was fantastic, and although the Incredible Hulk wasn't "incredible," it really felt like its own film. I also really liked how it gave a nod to the television series with Bill Bixby and Lou Ferrigno.
I can't even begin to process how bland, boring, mediocre and extremely tedious this movie is. I swear Man Of Steel is a way way way way way better superior superhero movie over this travesty
I like the actor who played Thor, but I felt like it was a little kids movie. People who understand what I mean would not put this movie Thor and the Dark Knight or even Batman Begins on the same level of awesometacular.
Seems wrong, but I understand. Superman had some pristine source material and it was mostly used well, but there could have been more character development instead of OTT action scenes. There was a point in the action when I almost - ALMOST - switched off. I didn't watch Thor expecting it to be as good as it was, but I watched Man of Steel thinking it would be better than it turned out to be. Not say MoS was a bad movie at all; I had a good time...But not an 'awesometacular' time.
@jaybee863 Loki actually was doing his best to impress his father, while through questionable decisions. He was pissed not because he was a Frost, but because he felt more worthy of Thor's reign over Asgard, which HE WAS.
I didn't have high expectations for Thor because I never read the comic and I wasn't terribly interested in the mythology. But, the movie wasn't even half way through when I realized I was watching the comic book movie I had been waiting ages to see. It was a comic book movie with roots in mythology and romanticism that even while being very serious in tone, took the time to welcome in the humor that was bound to come with the premise.
Those were the 2 main reasons. All of my other complaints are nit-picky. Perhaps my dislike for this movie is that it was the first Avengers movie I saw. I asked my friends which of the movies I should watch first before I saw The Avengers and they all said Thor because “ITS LIEK THE BEST AVENGERS MOVIE EVAZZZZ!!” Naturally, I had very high hopes for this movie and it really disappointed :( I hope the second one is much better. Thank you for asking instead of trolling :) I really appreciated it.
Loved each Avengers prelude film, but this one was definitely my favorite. I've always loved Thor and I'm glad to say it was my favorite 2011 movie next to Warrior
i agree with most things you said about the movie however i think the romance between thor and what's her face (forgot her name) could have been streched just the tinyest bit more
I never saw Thor just because it was another one of the "Avengers prequels" that I felt were just being churned out in a hurry to build Avengers hype. I saw Captain America because I'm a huge WW2 nerd, but in Thor there was just nothing for me. However, people say that Thor is the best of the prequels (I count the Hulk and Iron Man 2 as prequels, but not Iron Man 1 because it has no Avengers tie-ins other than a SHIELD reference I assume was accidental), so I'll probs catch it on DVD.
For the most part I liked the movie. I'd give it an 8 out of 10. The reason is because the lighting was a bit hard to see at some points, and because I was a little confused with as to exactly why Loki did what he did. But other than that it was good!
Review was spot on - when Thor regained his powers - awesome. And the way he dispatched the android.. nice. I wonder if THAT is why there is such animosity between Iron Man and Thor? Thor views stark as the destroyer, iron man views Thor as the equivalent of a blood thirsty war lord he fought in IM 1.
The ONLY problem I had with this movie was the romance. In my opinion: Natalie: "Hi, I like you." Thor : "That's great, just drive." I never felt like he cared about her until the very end.
Well i love Thor. Great Sci-Fi action movie great explaining about his origins. Great story. They had Hawkeye in it (Jeremy Renner). Agent Coulson was in it played by Clark Gregg he was in Iron Man and Iron Man 2 . Whole movie except at the end he had the main lead without Nick fury or Natasha Romanoff. Thor never hated his brother after what he did and I could go on and on. It is one of my favorite movie's and i will definitely own it on Blu-ray . Wonderful comic book origins story
I liked Thor a lot but now I'm realizing that you gave this Awesometacular but The Amazing Spider-Man got Buy it on Blu-Ray. I don't know, I though with the exception of Loki and Odin the acting in Spider-Man was much better and it was paced better I think. I don't know I just REALLY liked The Amazing Spider-Man and just liked Thor. Though I understand your points.
What I really like about these Avengers movies is that while they are all connected, they don't really feel like sequels. Iron Man 2 being the obvious acception. Thor and Hulk didn't feel like they were sequels of each other, you don't need to see these to understand Iron Man, or vise versa. But they still do have cameos and references to the other characters and movies.
@juneradar first of all Thor learned to be more patient, understanding and not so quick to do things and gained better morals. for example at the beginning Thor found out about the frost giants entry (caused by Loki letting them in) he went straight for them. At the end he saves them and learns to listen to his father. Loki had no good intentions he was pissed because he wasn't the same race as his father and almost killed an entire race of the frost giants. did you even watch the movie?
I liked this movie, minus the mini-romance subplot between Thor and Jane. I did not buy their romance one bit, and I felt there was no chemistry between Hemsworth and Portman. Not to mention that it was rather unbelievable: they've known each other for like 48 hours, and all of the sudden she's like smitten, head over heels, in love with the guy who she doesn't even know. Other than that, great film.

I love the fact he added the Mask because in that movie that's Lokis mask!
Respect Jeremy 10 yrs since I've been watching you
I agree. Probably the most underrated MCU film. I love Thor 1
Agreed.
I think it's a pretty fun movie. It has some nice themes in it. The only thing I don't like is Hawkeye's cameo and the tilted angles
What a strange world we live in. The fact that this movie is 11 years old and still stands really high as a very underrated movie that had to try, while the new movie is an obnoxious dumpster fire
This is the first jeremy jahns review i watched
Don't quote me on anything xD
while we would love a loki movie, seeing as he´s a villain the chances are roughly 0,001% of that happening. marvel caters firstly to the heroes.
Disney plus
my least favorite of the pre-avengers movies, second least favorite mcu movie after thor:the dark world. Anyway, was watching a marathon of all MCU movies recently, and i go through Thor fine, but the dark world i actually had to fastforward.
... Okie...
Totally agree.
Captain America was a much better movie then Thor!!!
Finally! Someone who agrees with me.
The first avenger sucked as
Jacob Sabastian true dat
whoa! totally opposite opinion than me
Thor was better
Scratch that thought about it. Thor 1 wasn't that bad it was just meh. But not bad
I thought the movie was ok but Jeremy gave it Awesomtacular like really dude?
Eh, would have given this a "buy on blue ray" It was just ok. Not really great
I re-watched this after seeing The Dark World and really this one and the sequel are two very different movies.
No. It’s just bloody magic!
when i saw Asgard I almost came
I just rewatched this and I really don’t like it, the Dutch angles makes the cinematography so awkward to me, and I didn’t like any of the characters except Thor and Loki, the sound effects sound really awkward and cgi looks incomplete at times, but I liked the story and how Thor’s actions leads to consequences, but that’s just me.
If only you knew Kratos was going to fight Thor
Can't wait for that!
The main fight of the movie is like a boss battle, and the only joke I remember in the movie is where Natalie Portman's annoying friend makes some joke about him being hot.
another joke was when thor called agent coulson "son of coul"
"You don't want to deplete the currency. If you see it too much then you're not gonna appreciate it when you do see it."
That's a note to Michael Bay right there.
I did not like this Thor. If it weren't for the second one I'd have hated Thor.
Lisa Joanna Thor was totally awesome...I especially liked the personality of Thor and the way he carried his lines.
I'm a comic book fan so I LOVE this movie. Whe you're a comic geek and you just see those things you wanna see, it's the best feeling ever. I understand why some regular movie goers didn't like it though, but that's cuz you don't know what you're watching.
I almost agree with everything...only the Loki part..well I love Tom Hiddleston's version of Loki and do prefere him over Thor.
Wasn't there only one, memorable, fight scene in the movie?
Jeremy: Thor is..... AWESOMETACULAR!!!!
Me: uhhhhh, No
Great review! So many reviewers have disliked Thor and I don't understand why. I think it's awesome!
It was straight up boring
I think some people dislike the Marvel films, saying that they're CGI romps meant for 6 year olds. Well, I'm a bit sick of everyone thinking superhero films have to be "dark" all the time. TDK was pure genius, but I liked Thor for exactly that reason- it had its intense moments but it wasn't afraid to be fluffy and light and wasn't taking itself too seriously. I thoroughly enjoyed it and didn't expect to. Good review, as always.
Thor is awesometackler
actually don't think Loki was very good in this movie and if you just watch this one you woudn't really get why fans love the character so much.
I have always loved Kennith Brannaugh but after watching Thor, my respect for him went to unprecedented levels.
Thor one is way better than Green Lantern, Batman forever and Batman&Robin. iron man one is better than Dark knight rises. I think marvel is winner..DC is sloppy second:)
Wow you don't sound bias at all. You are definitely not a deepthroating marvel fanboy
I would give it won't remember in t minus 2 days disappointing movie imo the earth scenes are just so unnecessary and boring
actually disagree here. Thought the earth scenes were better than all the asgard stuff.
7-7 ,can't people stop pretending that their oppinion is sacred? Everybody has their tastes.
Hi Jeremy
Good review, I really liked Thor. I never actually knew the whole story behind the character but now I do and as you said it is awesomtacular.
Regards
Gerann
I agree. The action scenes were great but they were few and far between in this film. The film is just okay.
Awesometacular? And Man of Steel got 'worth buying on bluray'? Wow...
How is this awesometacular? I definitely would not call this a masterpiece. I know it’s just your opinion... but would you really put this up there with Empire Strikes Back and LOTR?
This guy was different
Wow awesometacular? Didn't see that coming...
How dare you compare loki to that jim carrey no talented fool. I really REALLY dont like jim carrey. And actually, loki is pretty cool.
How dare you call Jim Carrey a no talented fool.
Jim Carrey has 100x more talent than "loki", you scrub!
Loki is the best thing known to man kind
I take it you're like 12 and therefore anything you say is invalid.
I really like Loki. And I like Jim Carrey too, but compared to Loki, I don't like him that much. But that is no reason to call Jim Carrey non talented. Or a fool.
what order do the marvel films go in to the build up to the avengers?
thor is awesometacular?.....u fancy criss' body or smthing?jezus, why the fk am i watching this guy...
Your grammar is just so bad......
Kako mohammed Thx for the info!Did u,at least, understand what i wanted to say?
I liked the chemistry between Hemsworth and Portman, but the romance does happen rather fast. But,it was said that when they tackle the romance again in the sequel, they will recognize that it was just kind of a,you know,a crush. Or either they are trying to correct the script deficiencies from the first movie or it was always intended to be like that. Much more likely to be the former, but it's still some smart writing right there.
You have really have good reviews but I hate Thor
I like Shakeseparian stuff in movies (Gladiator, The lion king...) that's why I loved this movie. And Loki is one of my favourites villains of all times. Such a tragic character like Commodus from Gladiator but less evil and more powerful.
I didn't really like this movie
i think thor was one of the best marvel movies
You really liked that movie?
It's one of the stupidest movies i ever watched...
U need to get ur head checked out lol
ynotbelieve7 No, I partially agree with him.
it was horrible
uibiguibgui kbufuyifyyf battlefield earth is horrible...get some perspective. Thor was awesome.
John dignerds eh
Iron Man 2, Thor, and Captain America all felt like trailers and prequels to the Avengers movie IMO. The first Iron Man was fantastic, and although the Incredible Hulk wasn't "incredible," it really felt like its own film. I also really liked how it gave a nod to the television series with Bill Bixby and Lou Ferrigno.
I can't even begin to process how bland, boring, mediocre and extremely tedious this movie is.
I swear Man Of Steel is a way way way way way better superior superhero movie over this travesty
amen
+Jeahav Valentin what's wrong with Hispanics
WWE2015ok year Sheeple minded assholes who jump on the bandwagon and can't utilize their own brains by thinking for themselves
Or were better people than Americans
+WWE2015ok year pst, I think he might be trolling
I've always loved Thor and I'm glad to say it was my favorite 2011 movie next to Warrior
i agree with most things you said about the movie however i think the romance between thor and what's her face (forgot her name) could have been streched just the tinyest bit more
I was a bit disappointed with Thor but that doesn't mean it was bad. I would give it a good time no alcohol required on Jeremy's scale
One thing I will say is the plot of Thor was pretty easy to break down, but it was so awesome that didn't matter.
"We only sell cats and dogs"
"fine, then give me one of those large enough to ride"
In my opinion:
Natalie: "Hi, I like you."
Thor : "That's great, just drive."
I never felt like he cared about her until the very end.
