    Thor: The Dark World is often held up as everything that's wrong with the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Pre-Thor: Ragnarok, the Chris Hemsworth franchise was not getting much respect. In this video I dig into the production behind Dark World and what led us to the film we have today...for better or worse.

    • @sofiadragon6520
      @sofiadragon6520 3 года назад +1

      If the movie was Romeo and Juliet with the aether instead of the poison and the Loki scenes mostly unchanged I can really see it coming together as a great film about relationships. Thor and his parents, Thor and his brother, Thor and his girlfriend, Thor and his friends... we had a racism subplot already built into Thor 1 with "Frost Giants" being less than people. There could have been some deep moments, subtle and almost unspoken just from acting and the plot, showing that it is the choices that make a person worthwhile or not instead of their race. Have one Asgardian talk about science with Jane, or have Thor brag of her education.
      By Ragnarok Thor has gotten over the racism and become a better person than he was at the start thanks to his time on Earth, but Dark World is not a great step on his journey of character growth in a lot of ways.
      And if I could change anything about Loki I'd have the MCU team embrace the idea from deleted scenes that Loki was tortured by the Chitauri before the Dark World was filmed. It was cut from Avengers, but fans were clearly eating up Tom Hiddleston's nuanced take on the villain and had jumped on the humanizing deleted scenes from Thor 1. It could have made the whole theme of complicated relationships better and removed the ugly "help me and I give you nothing" bargain Thor makes with him.

    Malekith didn't get the focus that future MCU villains would, too much time was spent on inconsequential stuff in the movie (pointless excursions with the side characters, for example). A lot of scenes of Malekith was actually cut (Christopher Eccleston said in an Interview that scenes showcasing the Dark Elves' history with Odin's father were filmed but never used).
    It's a shame, because Eccleston is a fantastic actor, but people don't even realise he was in the MCU.

      That was another thing changed in post-production. Loki was supposed to have died for real, redemption arc complete, but when Marvel realized how popular Loki was with fans, they hurriedly shot some footage where he took Odin's place. This was dumb, because it locked in the story in a stupid direction. They should have let Loki stay dead, and figured out bringing him back afterwards. Everyone knows there's Really Dead and then there's Marvel Dead.

      @@astrinymris9953 Which sticks out sore like a thumb considering to this day nobody knows how Loki managed to fake his death at Thor 2. • @aramis5301
      @aramis5301 3 года назад +5

      @@radrno7 The answer could be that he did NOT, in fact, "fake his death". He really got stabbed through the chest by the Kurse, but, he did not die. Thor just left his body there (which was really weird to be honest, I would have taken my brother's corpse to Asgard if I'd been him!). You can just imagine that Loki then woke up, having survived because, being a God, he's tough... And he simply let Thor and everyone else believe that he was truly dead, and took advantage of it. This is very much what Loki usually does: he improvises and tries to turn things to his advantage (even though very often, he ironically ends up making things worse for himself, as in Thor 1 where he had not planned for all this to happen at all, but was caught in a series of events he could not longer control).

    I liked quite a few things about the movie, even if it ultimately didn’t quite land. The gravity defying truck and the portal stairwell were cool and those scenes were really atmospheric. The end battle was really fun and interesting despite the villain being bland just because of the concept of reality falling apart. Also Thor being awkward in London was just amusing to me. The coat hanger bit and Thor getting stuck on the Tube were great. Also almost everything with Loki was great and it was a relief to see him written well again after the bland take on him in The Avengers. (I'm actually surprised to hear both were written by Whedon, they feel so different to me.)
    I do wish they'd have done more with Jane going to Asgard, that was such a waste. And turning her into a plot device for most of the movie... meh.

      Hey man same the first thor is a severely underrated movie. I love it to death, it's such a great story and the character development in that movie, my god, it's so great. From thor turning from an arrogant warrior to a humble, caring hero and loki turning from just a trickster who stuck to the shadows to the sympathetic villain we know today. The relationship between odin, thor, and loki are great and the the warriors three and lady sif were all great. Thor vs the destroyer is still awesome as hell to watch. I can go on and on lmao. Everything was set up very nicely after thor 1 and the avengers for thor to have a kick ass trilogy but then dark world came along and ruined it and I feel that one of the many reasons why is because they kinda left thor in a slump tbh he has no real arc in this movie. Loki is probably the only one with an arc from becoming a villain ti this anti hero but that's just it. Not to mention the story and action and villain were lackluster. I don't know if everyone in the movie was bored while making it. I don't think Tom Hiddleston was. He seemed to be having fun, which is why he's so enjoyable to watch. He never disses any project he's been in, which I appreciate. I mean, I usually like it when people are honest, but still, I find it a little disappointing when actors take a big paycheck for a movie, and then start talking shit about it. If they thought their role sucked, couldn't they turn it down, or else, try to work with the directors/writers to make it better? I'm pretty sure one of the reasons why Loki is such a great character, is that Hiddleston, in spite of his classical training, is not a snob, and he truly takes the role seriously and gives it everything he has. I am certain that much of Loki's complexity came from him, not just the directors and writers. So when the others whine about how horrible and boring their characters were... I don't know, I kind of feel like they could have done the same as he did.

      That's because it's much more focused on Loki. Ppl only remember the first one because of Thor hanging out on Earth and making memes, even though I'd say the first one's story is definitely better because at least there's something, Thor becoming humble and Loki wanting to prove he's worthy as well. What does the second one have? Loki's revenge? Malekith's juice? Jane's intern's intern? Did they forget whose name is in the title?

    I’d have watched the third one just for the director. Eagle VS Shark is a lovely little film I’ve watched many times since renting it at Blockbuster, so it’s been a long time getting the guy a big film or two. Proud of him. Proud of all of us, if I’m honest. That’s my fave Thor next to Wilson Fisk in Adventures in Babysitting. Proud of him as well.

    Even if Thor 1 is a by-the-numbers movie, it is such a fun watch. It's a quick watch, fast paced, and the fish out of water story really let Hemsworth spread his comedy wings and was fantastic in it. Definitely my top Thor movie. And lets talk about the score- it is some next level shit. So good.

      It was a pretty unique theater experience for me, as I went with a friend I'd never really hung out with that like before. And then he pulls entire pizza slices in ziploc bags out of his jacket pockets. I didn't even know you could smuggle that well.

    I actually enjoyed Dark World. Sure, it's not the best MCU film but it has some good moments, like Dr Selvig running naked at Stonehenge, Thor hanging his hammer in the coat hook, and the impressive portal battle in London.

    TDW, for me personally, wasn't far off from being really good. I also think it's not as bad as people say, although it's not the best. As for Patty, after seeing WW84, I'm glad she was taken off this project because I don't trust her at all. Her, JJ, Rian Johnson, Espinosa, should never be allowed near a movie production again.

    Thor and The Dark World are the two marvel films closer to the comics, where Thor is operatic, over the top, cosmic. Seems that they came to the conclusion that audiences don't like that kind of story nowadays.

    I think The Dark World was meant to be what Ragnarok did to the franchise: a space adventure across the Nine Realms. However, the first Thor set the tone for the rest of the franchise to go. Instead of improving the flaws of the first Thor film, The Dark World doubles it down, and it's still surprisingly good and enjoyable. The only thing that's missing aside from the continuation from the first film is the chilling villains left behind by Colm Foere and Tom Hiddleston.
    The film DID at least introduced two aspects that will be felt for the rest of the franchise: introducing competent and strong henchmen, and turning villains into heroes. Algrim / Kurse, despite minimal screentime, overshadowed Malekith for most of time, and did exactly what the plot needed him to do. Loki, whose redemption arc will be complete by the time Ragnarok is released, is turned into a good guy in the film's second act (until the film's final scene), setting the stage for other films to follow suit.

    I went to see this movie at my local theater and during the prison break scene where they get Loki out, the power went out in the theater right when Thor was about to strike something with his hammer. After a few hours of being stuck in the AMC theater bathroom me and my friends left the theater and apparently the power went out due to a tornado that basically leveled every surrounding building and just missed the theater and put a telephone pole though my friend's parent's car. Overall 5/10 movie

    The two things I really liked about this movie was the injection of a shit load of history into the MCU and I love the color palette and overall cinematography by Kramer Morgenthau especially on Svartalfheim. They make that planet and all those scenes on it just so cool. 😎
