finally a man who gets it, sometimes you just need a lull to breathe, and the lead up to titan gives you that. the fetch quest style of storytelling at that point isnt the most exciting but thats the point, and it does have its moments.
I know I have much "better" storytelling to encounter as my journey continues into expansions, but taking my time and appreciating ARR the way I have has shown me that the ARR content was and STILL is ahead of the curve VS peers in the genre. Its mind-blowing!
There are many times that are as bad as the Titan lead up quest lines where shit just takes WAY too long. I remember thinking, "if I didn't want a raw personal take on this to judge the hype, you would've had to have paid me a very good rate to keep going" many times in the MSQ. There are fantastic points in the MSQ as well, but goddamn, Squeenix needs to chop out at least 25% of it to make it less of a time-wasting, boring slough.
your going to love what comes next. i just started back at the end of may this year and now I am at patch 5.1 without skipping any MSQ dialog. haven't been able to pout the game down since starting it.

This is so crazy honestly! I love your journey. I can't stop thinking about how HYPED you will be when you reach the later trials (or even the last few trials from Heavensward) considering the ARR trials are already exciting to you. They get more and more cinematic and hype with each expansion, you'll LOVE it!
"Your actions have weight. Your character has meaning. The story is the game." This is exactly it. You often see people talk about how great Shadowbringers and Endwalker are, but the main reason they are as good as they are is because they stand on the shoulders of everything that has gone before. Their events wouldn't have nearly as much power if you hadn't already spent so much time in this world, with these people. I've played WoW before. I played it quite a lot at one time. But for the life of me I couldn't tell you what it is I did there. I was never able to stick with it long term, the way I have been playing FFXIV for almost 10 years now. And this is why. The story, by and large, didn't matter. My character ultimately had no meaning. I had no real reason to do all the things I was asked to do. I'm glad you've found the way to enjoying it this time around. You've hit upon the right mindset. The journey through this game is less about the destination, and more about all the things you experience along the way.
I can relate, even being a massive WoW lore nerd it just hasn't been able to make the same connection with the player to world/characters and feel as genuine as FFXIV has managed to do so far. Thank you for the awesome comment and watching the video, hope you enjoyed it!
They double, triple, and quadruple down on making the boss fights into epic showpieces that demonstrate how much grandeur and pomp can be put into a single boss arena. From supporting plot-relevant mini-battles to enemies who can outright cut the arena in half, It Gets Wild. You've got some real treasures to look forward to as you venture forth.
Yes welcome indeed. I switched to ff14 from wow about a year ago. Altho the the MSQ is extremely long its worth every moment of your time. The entire game is phenomenal from leveling, crafting all the way through ultimate raiding. I recommend approaching FF14s MSQ as if it were a graphical novel or a tv show you bing watch. Just expect it ti take time. If you choose to skip the cutscenes and stuff you are only robbing yourself of an amazing experience. Ive laughed, cried and felt on the edge of my seat during the MSQ so it is well worth it.

It's always the unexpected moments of laughter for me. This game has it all. Laughter, joy, despair, anger, relief... and it's all delivered by Characters you actually understand, even those who are supposed to be villains don't do stuff just like that, they actually have solid reasoning behind their plans. You just need time (and follow and read the story) to understand them. I'm playing ff14 since 11 years now, now and then I found myself in a dilemma of actually not wanting to fight a villain because I got their point of view and shared their opinion.
Whooo welcome to the FFXIV community! A lot of WoW veterans are scared to ask questions, but please don't be! People usually prefer if you ask questions, rather than staying silent and not knowing how anything works lol. If you're already enjoying ARR, then you've got a lot of great surprises ahead. There is so much love put into the story writing in FFXIV, both in the main scenario quests and in a ton of the sidequests. Highly recommend doing blue quests that you come across in your travels. These always unlock new content or classes or features, and they often contain emotionally evocative stories, and characters that tie into the MSQ and other quests throughout the world sometimes.

Glad you gaveit another try and chose to approach the game differently. FF14 lives through its story - and *especially* through characters that polarize people. Great video! I'd also add that WoW's new player experience is very different now, starting off on the tutorial island (which is actually a great tutorial), but then sending you right into Dragonflight where tons of major lore characters already know who you are and are acting like you're a legendary hero who's saved Azeroth many times over. They definitely need to work on that.
Always love seeing the reactions from WoW players that really get into the story and take their time soaking in everything, especially since I played for a long time myself! Like others have said there's so much good stuff ahead, everyone has their preferences (I've head positive and negative opinions for every single expansion), but honestly even the lowest lows from ARR all the way to DT (excluding the Titan banquet you yourself pointed out in the video lmao) have always felt higher than a majority of WoW's in-game storytelling moments. There's some moments in WoW that peaked higher than some of XIV's lows, but on average XIV takes the cake 9/10 times compared to WoW, imo. All that to say, enjoy the rest of the story and when you get to those low valleys, whatever they may be for you, you'll have plenty of high peaks to look forward to still, that I can promise!
I felt quite similar when going through low moments from 2.0 to 2.4 (current for me) and FFXIV really is something special! As you say, the next time I encounter a dull moment I can rest assured that not only will it not last long - but it just means the next peak is even higher to enjoy 😁
The director and producer of FFXIV, Yoshi P, has been making changes to the game over the years so that a player could potentially progress through the main story as if it were a single player game. And that's just it, FFXIV was created as a Final Fantasy game first and an MMO second.
"Hear....Feel...Think...." Welcome Eorzia! I've also come back to this game earlier this year and have been taking my time with the MSQ. My advice: Do not rush anything and enjoy the game. This is the MMO that I wish that I'd found years ago.....I played vanilla WoW up to Dragonflight.

Welcome to ffxiv!! About trash in the trials: it's great to skip to the action. Later dungeons are designed to have two packs between walls, and the strat becomes to pull "wall to wall" essentially soacking up most packs until the tank can't move forward. Do this twice and you are usually at the next boss, setting up a nice cadence. By then all classes can also AoE, which really helps grinding those trash pulls down quickly. Enjoy the Ice Primal when you get to it. If you enjoyed the music so far, you might enjoy this one even more.. Be sure to tick off the crystal tower and the coils of bahamut raids. The coils is optional, but reintroduces the Alisae character and gives her a much needed story arch. Lastly, just a minor thing, but the voice acting becomes better in HW.
And it'll get only wilder and greater. You get to end of one DLC and think "Dang, this was a big deal" only to see things get even further in next stages. All worth it. I've been playing MMO's for decades, started with Meridian 59 from way back when and can say from personal experience that so far, FF14 is best. It has some lower moments in some cases but it's always followed by several peaks.

Don't worry about the music, it's not like there's day/night themes for each area, each fight, each dungeon/trial/raid, each event, numerous cutscenes, etc.. or that they made it into the Guinness book of world records for it. Just turn it up to 100 for A Long Fall and you'll be fine.
you're gonna love the endwalker bosses and raids, still my fav evn with the new expansion. Apart from the level 97 dungeon, get some of the coolest looking gear for glam. Glad you're loving the game broski, looking forward to more content. I'd say one thing that FFXIV does better then WoW is the transmog/glamour. FFXIV's better graphics just open up cooler things to transmog/glam. The PvP may not be that big like WoW but it's fun as hell and some of the glam you can get from PvP, in my mind are cool. Definitely give Frontlines a go, it takes awhile to figure out what's happening but think of it as a mass-battlegrounds i forget the names of the maps, but the massive ones with obscene amount of players. Frontlines though is against three factions all at once doing objectives and it can just get insanely chaotic! but the cool thing is you almost have to relearn your class because the abilities you use in Frontlines are different then pve abilities. For instance a White mage basically becomes a veloci-priest with stuns, can be quite a game changer.
Welcome to Final Fantasy, heh. I will never tire seeing new players joining the game. Now, what you're up for? This game is insanely huge and after 7.0 update it has just shy of 100 dungeons (I think it's in mid 90s - between 92 and 96 - don't remember exact number), over 50 trials and Multiple raids, each one is worth of playing through at least for the story involved with raid. There is incredible amount of content and the fact that game takes over 160 GB of disk space is one of few times when I feel that this amount of drive space is fully justified. Also past level 50 they fixed all the music for dungeons so tracks properly loop and last longer than 1,5 minutes. And one more thing about music... I think XIV has biggest variety of the musical styles in any game by now - from classical waltz to jazz to epic instrumental themes to jpop to butt-rock to alt rock. There is also healthy amount of performers that have been singing for the game - like J.C. Miller or Chrissy Costanza and other singers (many songs have lyrics written by previous director of translation - Michael Christoper Koji-Fox (a.k.a. Koji) and performed by Soken and Koji themselves) and just trust me - you're not ready for some of these songs. You may think you're ready, but you're not.
Welcome to FFXIV and yeah the games story is the major factor here which is why I saddens me when ever I hear people say that they don't read the MSQ test and just skip the Dialogs. So they missing out on SOOOOO MUCH in a mad rush to get the end were they just end up being bored.
FF14 is basically a Final Fantasy themed Amusement Park. Complete with hotels, restaurants, swimming pool, and casino. I would honestly even call the raiding an Amusement Park Ride. Everything is very clean and very modular. On the opposite side of the spectrum you would have the old games like Ultima Online and EverQuest where everything was more of a sandbox or jigsaw puzzle, not much focus on balance just an attempt at trying to make a D&D like environment inside of a video game. WoW is in the middle somewhere and maybe a bit closer to FF14 these days.
I came to FFXIV after playing 12 years of WoW. I have had an amazing journey and hope you do as well. One of the nicest things about this game is the fact that the developers respect your time. No longer do you have to spend all your allotted gaming time recreating trash if you wipe on a boss. Instead, you can just focus on the boss. The other thing I really enjoy about this game is the laughter when you fail. In WoW raiding was stressful and if people made stupid mistakes, they’d be berated and probably kicked from the group. In FFXIV, most people will laugh and encourage the person who made the mistake. So get ready for a lot of 😂, and probably a lot of 😢 too

I had friends get me into FF14 after they told me about the job system. I had written off MMOs because of WoW burn out, I quite when Blackwing Lair was introduced, and trying other MMO. They all felt the same with fetch quests and so much time wasted. I ended up dropping FF14, back when you had to level up certain jobs to unlock other jobs, due to a series of Scion quests that had me taking 20 minutes chocobo rides to and from the Scion base in the desert. At the end of this long series of trips, a reward was a communication device that would have avoided all the back and forth I did. I felt my time wasted again. I got back into FF14 because of the music I was hearing from Shadowbringers. I also heard that they had gone back and fixed a lot of the grind.
FFXIV is an RPGMMO rather than an MMORPG; meaning it's the RPG first and the MMO second. If you play it like It's a Final Fantasy game you'll get way more enjoyment out of it than if you just played it like It's an MMO.

I don't know about anything ff14, but I do know that in retail WoW, you can pretty easily go from level 1 to 80 in less than a month if you play really consistently. I would hope that ff14 doesn't have you leveling that fast.

I really hate ARR. Like I REEEEALLY hate it. But when I tried playing WoW cuz my friend convinced me to.. god it fucking sucked. I couldn't get through 20 minutes.
The problem with "highs" of the ARR is that they are also a snoozefest. Oh, look, Ifrit! That is going to be so cool! And he's dead. Huh. Alright, alright. Titan! Titan is going to be a challenge, Titan will teach me how to do interesting... Ah, stand on the very edge of the circle. Got it. And now he's dead. Every single bit of ARR can be completed by pretty much face rolling the keyboard. Dungeons? Hah, playing Scholar there's a high chance you won't press a healing button ONCE in the early game, unless you're going wall to wall. Aurum Vale is pretty much the most fun mechanically you can have in ARR, aside for Extremes and some Hard versions of old dungeons. But you don't get to go there very often. I don't like the main cast. I don't find ARR story particularly interesting or griping. I've seen it all 100 times before. It's "Baby's first JRPG" that doesn't do anything particularly different in terms of the story. I play for the side content, side characters and side stories. Those are universally great, I won't deny that. But the whole "You need to have lows to appreciate the highs" is bollocks. Lows don't have to be tedious and/or boring. And brother, whenever someone complains about "gathering 10 bear butts", I can always point out to the "look at the snow 7 times" and "give socks to recruits, because nobody else can, you're the best man for the job, dude" Haurchefant gets a pass. He is the only "friend-coded" character from the ARR main cast, really. Everyone else are you co-workers, nothing more. POINT BEING: When you want to make high highs and low lows, you have to correspond the highs *mechanically*. And brother, believe you me, there's nothing "high" about throwing Fire 1 at Ifrit. Nothing whatsoever.
WoW=talk to npc and start killing wolfes, Gameplay starts from min 1. FF= talk to npc and watch videos, than walking simulator and mor talking and videos, little to no Gameplay.
Dawntrail made me swap back to WoW. The story is all i came here for and now that's over it seems like The War Within is at least moving the narrative needle, unlike this 30 hour dog nap waste of time. I highly recommend every expansion but the newest one. Just don't unless you care about end game raiding, the narrative isnt remotely worth $40.
Arr is a slog to go through sometimes, but quite a lot of important characters are introduced, and skipping it will make you lose quite a bit of information. But at the same time, some things can and should be shortened, while some things should be extended in the story, Now I am getting into a heavy spoiler Territory. "HEAVY SPOILERS" Moenbryda's death and her entire character are a waste of potential. She is introduced too late and killed off way too fast to have any meaning. I was more struck by the Sultana "Death" than hers even though she heroically sacrificed herself. Even later on when we met her Parents, I only felt bad for our fav tarot boy, but not Moenbryda´s death or even feeling sad for the parents. Just thinking about all the boring walking quests, with almost no story behind that you have to slog through and then an interesting Character gets no time to develop. I wept at Papalymo's death, I wept when Yasale sacrificed herself, but nothing with Moenbryda because we met her, and after what felt like two minutes of scenes with her, she is dead. Hell, so many plot points felt like they should have had more time to play out in Arr, but did not get a chance. It is just a shame in Moenbryda's case as she is brought up again and again and I keep forgetting who tf she even was. Like when her parents appeared, they said her name, and I was like who is your child? Till I finally remembered who tf she even was.

The director and producer of FFXIV, Yoshi P, has been making changes to the game over the years so that a player could potentially progress through the main story as if it were a single player game. And that's just it, FFXIV was created as a Final Fantasy game first and an MMO second.

I've also come back to this game earlier this year and have been taking my time with the MSQ. My advice: Do not rush anything and enjoy the game. This is the MMO that I wish that I'd found years ago.....I played vanilla WoW up to Dragonflight.
I am glad you are having fun. One of my FC members was very invested, but he is feeling ARR to be too long and feels burnt out. I hope he stays, he is a nice guy.

About trash in the trials: it's great to skip to the action. Later dungeons are designed to have two packs between walls, and the strat becomes to pull "wall to wall" essentially soacking up most packs until the tank can't move forward. Do this twice and you are usually at the next boss, setting up a nice cadence. By then all classes can also AoE, which really helps grinding those trash pulls down quickly.
Enjoy the Ice Primal when you get to it. If you enjoyed the music so far, you might enjoy this one even more..
Be sure to tick off the crystal tower and the coils of bahamut raids. The coils is optional, but reintroduces the Alisae character and gives her a much needed story arch.
Lastly, just a minor thing, but the voice acting becomes better in HW.

And it'll get only wilder and greater. You get to end of one DLC and think "Dang, this was a big deal" only to see things get even further in next stages. All worth it. I've been playing MMO's for decades, started with Meridian 59 from way back when and can say from personal experience that so far, FF14 is best. It has some lower moments in some cases but it's always followed by several peaks.

Don't worry about the music, it's not like there's day/night themes for each area, each fight, each dungeon/trial/raid, each event, numerous cutscenes, etc.. or that they made it into the Guinness book of world records for it.
Just turn it up to 100 for A Long Fall and you'll be fine.
you're gonna love the endwalker bosses and raids, still my fav evn with the new expansion. Apart from the level 97 dungeon, get some of the coolest looking gear for glam. Glad you're loving the game broski, looking forward to more content. I'd say one thing that FFXIV does better then WoW is the transmog/glamour. FFXIV's better graphics just open up cooler things to transmog/glam. The PvP may not be that big like WoW but it's fun as hell and some of the glam you can get from PvP, in my mind are cool. Definitely give Frontlines a go, it takes awhile to figure out what's happening but think of it as a mass-battlegrounds i forget the names of the maps, but the massive ones with obscene amount of players. Frontlines though is against three factions all at once doing objectives and it can just get insanely chaotic! but the cool thing is you almost have to relearn your class because the abilities you use in Frontlines are different then pve abilities. For instance a White mage basically becomes a veloci-priest with stuns, can be quite a game changer.

This game is insanely huge and after 7.0 update it has just shy of 100 dungeons (I think it's in mid 90s - between 92 and 96 - don't remember exact number), over 50 trials and Multiple raids, each one is worth of playing through at least for the story involved with raid.
There is incredible amount of content and the fact that game takes over 160 GB of disk space is one of few times when I feel that this amount of drive space is fully justified.
Also past level 50 they fixed all the music for dungeons so tracks properly loop and last longer than 1,5 minutes.
And one more thing about music... I think XIV has biggest variety of the musical styles in any game by now - from classical waltz to jazz to epic instrumental themes to jpop to butt-rock to alt rock. There is also healthy amount of performers that have been singing for the game - like J.C. Miller or Chrissy Costanza and other singers (many songs have lyrics written by previous director of translation - Michael Christoper Koji-Fox (a.k.a. Koji) and performed by Soken and Koji themselves) and just trust me - you're not ready for some of these songs. You may think you're ready, but you're not.

Welcome to FFXIV and yeah the games story is the major factor here which is why I saddens me when ever I hear people say that they don't read the MSQ test and just skip the Dialogs. So they missing out on SOOOOO MUCH in a mad rush to get the end were they just end up being bored.

FF14 is basically a Final Fantasy themed Amusement Park. Complete with hotels, restaurants, swimming pool, and casino.
I would honestly even call the raiding an Amusement Park Ride. Everything is very clean and very modular.
On the opposite side of the spectrum you would have the old games like Ultima Online and EverQuest where everything was more of a sandbox or jigsaw puzzle, not much focus on balance just an attempt at trying to make a D&D like environment inside of a video game.
WoW is in the middle somewhere and maybe a bit closer to FF14 these days.

I came to FFXIV after playing 12 years of WoW. I have had an amazing journey and hope you do as well. One of the nicest things about this game is the fact that the developers respect your time. No longer do you have to spend all your allotted gaming time recreating trash if you wipe on a boss. Instead, you can just focus on the boss.
The other thing I really enjoy about this game is the laughter when you fail. In WoW raiding was stressful and if people made stupid mistakes, they’d be berated and probably kicked from the group. In FFXIV, most people will laugh and encourage the person who made the mistake.
So get ready for a lot of 😂, and probably a lot of 😢 too

I had friends get me into FF14 after they told me about the job system. I had written off MMOs because of WoW burn out, I quite when Blackwing Lair was introduced, and trying other MMO. They all felt the same with fetch quests and so much time wasted. I ended up dropping FF14, back when you had to level up certain jobs to unlock other jobs, due to a series of Scion quests that had me taking 20 minutes chocobo rides to and from the Scion base in the desert. At the end of this long series of trips, a reward was a communication device that would have avoided all the back and forth I did. I felt my time wasted again.
I got back into FF14 because of the music I was hearing from Shadowbringers. I also heard that they had gone back and fixed a lot of the grind.
I love that Ifrit, Titan and Garuda are like "holy shiet look at this". Was for me too. Juuust you wait...you ain't see nothing yet buddy xD
If the ARR Primal fights are impressive to you, I can't wait to see how you'll handle the escalation of later trials.

FFXIV is an RPGMMO rather than an MMORPG; meaning it's the RPG first and the MMO second. If you play it like It's a Final Fantasy game you'll get way more enjoyment out of it than if you just played it like It's an MMO.

I don't know about anything ff14, but I do know that in retail WoW, you can pretty easily go from level 1 to 80 in less than a month if you play really consistently. I would hope that ff14 doesn't have you leveling that fast.

Those 2 are hard to compare but in FF14 the Character build up is better then in WoW in my opinion.

I really hate ARR. Like I REEEEALLY hate it. But when I tried playing WoW cuz my friend convinced me to.. god it fucking sucked. I couldn't get through 20 minutes.

Shame the leveling experience is awful outside the msq.
The problem with "highs" of the ARR is that they are also a snoozefest. Oh, look, Ifrit! That is going to be so cool! And he's dead. Huh. Alright, alright. Titan! Titan is going to be a challenge, Titan will teach me how to do interesting... Ah, stand on the very edge of the circle. Got it. And now he's dead. Every single bit of ARR can be completed by pretty much face rolling the keyboard. Dungeons? Hah, playing Scholar there's a high chance you won't press a healing button ONCE in the early game, unless you're going wall to wall. Aurum Vale is pretty much the most fun mechanically you can have in ARR, aside for Extremes and some Hard versions of old dungeons. But you don't get to go there very often.
I don't like the main cast. I don't find ARR story particularly interesting or griping. I've seen it all 100 times before. It's "Baby's first JRPG" that doesn't do anything particularly different in terms of the story.
I play for the side content, side characters and side stories. Those are universally great, I won't deny that. But the whole "You need to have lows to appreciate the highs" is bollocks. Lows don't have to be tedious and/or boring. And brother, whenever someone complains about "gathering 10 bear butts", I can always point out to the "look at the snow 7 times" and "give socks to recruits, because nobody else can, you're the best man for the job, dude"
Haurchefant gets a pass. He is the only "friend-coded" character from the ARR main cast, really. Everyone else are you co-workers, nothing more.
POINT BEING: When you want to make high highs and low lows, you have to correspond the highs *mechanically*. And brother, believe you me, there's nothing "high" about throwing Fire 1 at Ifrit. Nothing whatsoever.
WoW=talk to npc and start killing wolfes, Gameplay starts from min 1. FF= talk to npc and watch videos, than walking simulator and mor talking and videos, little to no Gameplay.
Dawntrail made me swap back to WoW. The story is all i came here for and now that's over it seems like The War Within is at least moving the narrative needle, unlike this 30 hour dog nap waste of time.
I highly recommend every expansion but the newest one. Just don't unless you care about end game raiding, the narrative isnt remotely worth $40.
Arr is a slog to go through sometimes, but quite a lot of important characters are introduced, and skipping it will make you lose quite a bit of information. But at the same time, some things can and should be shortened, while some things should be extended in the story, Now I am getting into a heavy spoiler Territory.
"HEAVY SPOILERS"
Moenbryda's death and her entire character are a waste of potential. She is introduced too late and killed off way too fast to have any meaning. I was more struck by the Sultana "Death" than hers even though she heroically sacrificed herself. Even later on when we met her Parents, I only felt bad for our fav tarot boy, but not Moenbryda´s death or even feeling sad for the parents. Just thinking about all the boring walking quests, with almost no story behind that you have to slog through and then an interesting Character gets no time to develop. I wept at Papalymo's death, I wept when Yasale sacrificed herself, but nothing with Moenbryda because we met her, and after what felt like two minutes of scenes with her, she is dead.
Hell, so many plot points felt like they should have had more time to play out in Arr, but did not get a chance. It is just a shame in Moenbryda's case as she is brought up again and again and I keep forgetting who tf she even was. Like when her parents appeared, they said her name, and I was like who is your child? Till I finally remembered who tf she even was.
