Classic Game Room reviews RIVER RAID for the Atari 2600 VCS Video Computer System by Activision released in 1982. This vertical scrolling shoot em up, or SHMUP, is a great example of the 2D action fighter plane genre like 1942 or 1943. We love Shmups here at Classic Game Room, and this classic old school retro arcade video game is one of the best. Pilot your jet up the river and destroy bad guys with your arsenal of missiles. If you like Ikaruga, Radiant Silvergun and Raiden III you will love River Raid. This game should be remade for the PS3, Wii or Xbox 360 Live XBLA sometime soon because it is so much fun and a great shooter with great controls and action. It's a maniac shooter, it's RIVER RAID!
Be sure to watch the original Classic Game Room episodes. Classic Game Room was the original classic video game review show on the Internet in 1999-2000, now on DVD. The HD series is reviewing PS3, PS2, Genesis, NES, Atari and Xbox 360. XBLA. videos review review show funny
This is my Dad's favorite game. He famously called out sick from his teaching job one day in the early 80s to finish it. When my Mom left for work in the morning she came home 9 hours later to find him sitting in the same place still playing River Raid. He didn't realize there is no actual ending to the game.
If you can actually hit 1 million points, the game crashes. It's like a Y2K of its time 😊
i remember one day i just play pitfall, determined to beat it i ran nonstop, never stopped moving, ran one direction and jumped at the perfect times for the entire 20 minutes. got every treasure i found, and the 20 mins just ran out. after that i just figured it's just about score, there is no beating the game. years later i heard you can beat the game if you get every treasure.
Fun completely made up fact: River Raid is actually a prequel for Toobin. The jet clears the river of bridges, tanks, etc. so that the guy from Toobin can go down with fewer obstacles.
man you're reviews on the atari actually make me want to go play it again :D
The sheer quality of it was amazing; the smooth scrolling, the colours, the sounds, the inertia, the design, the playability, the feel.... absolute feat of mastery to programme this on a VCS! I still play this today, it's that good.
I like how the river of no return is in the suburbs.
Great game, first 2600 game that really got me hooked and coming back for more...miss the 80s!
This is one of my favorite 2600 games. I can play this game for hours.
I like the effect of the plane tipping when you move side to side. Very nice detail for an atari game
One of if not the best game imho on the 2600. Played this for hours back in the day.
i remember playing this game at a .. in a room, in a building in Kiev, where they had some Ataris set up, 3 of them, and you could pay to play them for a certain time. This was in.. 1989 maybe? i was in 3rd grade. those sounds really brought me back its funny
wow now this brings back some serious nostalgia. as i was watching i started to remeber the patterns of what was coming up next, like when you had to slow down alot to be able to hit the ship infront of the bridge at a sharp angle. God i hate being old. id give anyting to go back to that time
Yah, I remember this game,. It was one of my favorites on the 2600. I know it came out on a lot of other consoles and I would have loved to have tried them. But a couple things bother. 1 is how can a battleship crash into a flying jet? Another is why cant the jet fly over the river banks? Another is why only the enemy jets can fly over the river banks?
I really love this review man!!!... In fact, I absolutely love this awesome game, because it is obviously one of the best games ever made, specially if you go back in time and compare it with some many others. It is so well designed and programmed that it is hard to believe that it was made by just one person. My wife doesn't like games much but when I power on my Atari 5200 she can't resist to take the (rebuilt) controller and kick some ass down the river (or better said "up the river").
I played an unnatural number of hours on this game back in the day. I can even remember going with my parents to buy it at K-mart in charlotte NC. Games then were simple and fun.
This game is excellent!!!! It's still in my Atari 7800 that I have not played in a long time unfortunately.
This was one of my favorite games on the 2600.
Hands down River Raid is still my all time favorite videogame ever!
i remember it was my all time fav atari game
best game ever, i wish there more shmup like it today, less bullet hell and tactic
Still miss that classic CGR
haha, great review. love the rant at the end. spot on.
Absolute classic. Played this when I was 6 years old.
River Raid rocks my world since the first day i played it !
LOL nice comment at the end of the video about pendot. I Geuss you live in P.A. and know how bad they are at road repair, and most recently bridge repair...but what are you gonna do? anyway great video I'm trying to get into the Atari 2600 even though I'm 16, I feel like I missed out.
I remember this game back in the day and i think it was the best atari 2600 game too .
Great Game . I play this on my Playstation Vita. Bought the game digitally from the ps store. Games called Activision Hits Remixed for the PSP. Used a ps3 to transfer the game to the VIta.
this was a great game, I played it, I think, more then any other game. Trying to get all the activision patches was great.
Whenever I hear that Valkyrie tune,I always think of Daniel Bryan. Yes! Yes! Yes!
Now that's how to do a game review!
Entertaining. Thumbs up
What is the name of the song again? I know the song but I forgot what it was...
There was a knock-off of this game called Harbor Escape! I thought both games were great!
I have a version of this on the iPod Touch called River Striker. Just like this except faster. Pretty fun, actually.
Wonder what the hi-score is on TG.com is BTW?
the best game in my alife
i was about to cry when i saw this video
I used to play this when I was 3 or 4.
The water was purple on my tv.
I guess it was the Mississippi river.
one of my fav 2600 games!!!!
I just bought an Atari Flashback 2 and it comes with this game :D
Screw multiplayer... Forget the trophies, achievements, and DLC this IS WHERE ITS AT!!!! AND IT WAS DESIGNED AND PROGRAMMED BY A WOMAN!
Awesome game. I never got to play this one as much as I wanted to back in the day. I didn't own it.
WyreWizard, if you want to fly over the river banks and battleships play River Raid 2 or Zaxxon. both of these games let you fly higher and lower to go over objects, although if you're playing on the 2600 River Raid 2 is better because Zaxxon's isometric view point looks wonky.
Also, Fantastic Voyage is another awesome vertical shooter that is ALWAYS over looked. If you agree Fantastic Voyage deserves more attention (I mean it takes place inside a bloodstream!), vote this comment up
@uzi9millimetuh Seriously? I popped this game into my Atari today and had a blast. I keeps my attention much longer than most Atari games.
my xbox live gamertag is named after this game. first and fave game ever played.
Ohh... I just have the rainbow in mind everytime I hear activision :D Damn, Activision was great on the 2600... :)
i had the record for this game and took a picture. sent it in and received a river raid patch
Well this is the first game i ever played :P beautifull times , so simple and so playable :)
k so im only 12 and i nevery even new what a sega was tell not to long ago and i first saw these old gaming consoles and it kind of made me think. i said wow these are really cool and now im a huge fan of atari sega ninted.ect. so id like to say thanks to angry video game nerd check him out, and classic game good. thanks guys
Really? Not a single mention of Carol Shaw, the programmer of River Raid? She was the first female video game designer in history. And this is probably the best game on Atari.
what a fun review! Way to stimulate the economy! :)
Ride of the Valkyries, from the opera "Die Walküre," by Richard Wagner.
I love the smell of Atari in the morning lol
River Raid=Economic Stimulus Package neatly wrapped in an Atari cartridge! Genius!
As I first saw this game, i just thought WTF? An activision 2600 game cartridge without a rainbow?!? But this is one of my favorite games, it´s just fuckin awesome :)
so was Warlords, what's your point?
i have the original users manual and game catalog also the 1 year warranty. i think it expired :(.
says here if you make 15,000 pts or more your a eligible to become an official River Rader. the max score on this game is one million with exclamation points and if you get that is says you are one of the worlds greatest video game competitors
you, sir, are a TRUE American
One of the first female programmers to make a game also - Carol Shaw.
when are you gonna review SpaceMaster... i bet you could achieve the supreme order of the space master
this is my dad's favourite game ^^
LOL that would have been a good thing! 7800 and 2600 were the best. 5200 had controller problems.
I had had the game. You are flying in a canyon, and I always imagined it to be that some foreign force had invaded the grand canyon (why there would station all their troops there I wasn't sure and was too young to think about the why )
CGR, Stella, & Windsquid for RUclips channel pet and hypothetical space creature of the year 2012!
look for the manual on AtariAge that's how i got my StarMaster manual
I love this game...i bought a 2600 at a flea market and my dad told me this was one of the games that i HAD to get...but being the sore loser he is...once i got farther than either of us have ever gotten on ONE life....then he turned off the atari. And i still haven't gotten that far to this day.
@RRVCrinale i loaded the app and i had no idea until i watched this video i thought it was so funni
Mark, we coulda used ya in 'Nam, boy. where were ya?
it had s few other little problems too. AVGN reviews it. check it out.
Great game
here in 2017
+thespiralmatrix
I've got you beat, I'm here in 2018!
Is that how that works?
If Activision would of made their own console with the games that they made, we would of never even seen the 5200
that's THE game !
@ 5: The real Debell reveals himself...
@FootballPro97 i grew up with pokemon emerald and halo ce...and i want to play this game
@sublimenese really? that sucks...
river raid takes place in the great nation of planebomya.
best game ever
River RaidEN 1945 Strikers II... Silvergaruga!
The 5200 version is far superior. Too bad not many people got to play that version...
Back with Activision made original games.
@JBOPatrick - I don't live in Oslo, 80% our population doesn't live there neither. A friend of mine travels for 3h to reach work with 3 more hours back. I am going to admit that we likely don't commute as much as you do, but our goverment has a 22% surplus iin their budget and are talking about raising petrolium taxes to save the environment. Saving it is fine, but what has to be transpored has to be so and it will only drive companies bankrupt rather than save the environment.
couldn't be the Susquehanna, the water is blue....
its why hes AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!
so dont go ahead and sell ur atari for chump change let it live on
Back when Activision made good games.
What you described is what US do with other countries such Afghanistan. xD
i remember that to get more points i go into the fuel and before i get out i shot, so i get fule and points :D
So River Raid is the answer on how to fix our current economy...I never would have thought of that.
Haha! Hilarious commentary.
broke a few RECORDS playing this game
But you commented.
Hate those DAMN choppers!
Activision works for Atari
lol apocolypse now redux is a great movie
game rules
the plane has Lousy MPG
The Ohio River? No way, man. That's way to blue for the Ohio. Try brown.
Spends 5+ minutes jabbering about nonsense, about half a second on the quality of the game. I think he said "great" once. This is scarcely a review.
4 dollars per gallon! That's bloody cheap; we pay 2.15 dollars per litre so a gallon of our petrolium would cost about 8 dollars, it isn't all that odd though, with our 175% petrolium taxs and our sosialist goverment needs money to NOT build roads and keep in mind that we are the 3rd or 4th largest petrolium exporter in the world.
@johnwx777 random details much? haha
😂😂
Your funny man!!!
i hope you're trolling, sir
LoL i found flash version of this game... type: "hot games river raid" on google
