The story in the game manual was this was supposed to be a battle going on between two planets, one good and one bad! But I think we were all smart enough to know what it was really all about!
One of my absolute favorite 2600 games. Rob Fulop did a great job translating this from the arcade. Fun Fact:as a reward for making a multi-million copy seller for Atari, Rob received a Christmas bonus of- a coupon for a free turkey! Mr. Fulop and a few others immediately quit Atari and founded Imagic. His next game was Demon Attack.
This 2600 version is pretty sweet! As Gillanorley said, it has many differences from the original but it still is really great! People do need to give the 2600 more respect!
I miss CGR's older, calmer style, like the one used in this review. It's silly and fun, but it's not nearly as...random and looney as the current ones. It's okay though; I still prefer Mark's easy-going manner to manic hyperactivity of most game channels.
I used to turn off the lights and play this game all night.. I love hearing these sounds it brings back so many memories.. I really want to get a 2600. I thought they were gone for good
John Conner was playing Missile Command, over all of the other games in the Arcade, in T2.....PLAYING MISSILE COMMAND IS WHAT SAVED THE HUMAN RACE FROM SKYNET!!!!! X3
The "small dots" are smart missiles. You were using either the beginner or children setting which makes them dumb missiles. Use game selection 3 or 4 and they'll avoid your ABM blasts just like in the arcade and you'll see what the game can really do. Your 2600 reviews are great but you often use lower settings which show games in crippled states.
I think this is the first ever Missile Command review i've seen where theres no complaint about the 2600 version not being compatible with the trackball.
Great job! It's probably my favorite reviews so far. I too felt that it was my civic duty to master this game. You never knew when Ronnie was going to be on that phone telling me that my services were needed. Those little falling dots were smart bombs I believe. They were a total bitch to hit because they fell much faster than the ICBMs. The only differences between the coin-op and this one was 3 missile bases in the original. The original also had bombers which you could hit for bonus pts.
Missle Command is possibly the scariest game ever made. Even scarier than it was 30 years ago. While the possibility of a nuclear war back then was frightening enough, it is more so frightening considering our policy towards the middle east. 20 years after Missile Command, a war hit America at a time where it was least expected, and 10 years later the war is not getting better. Back then, our fear was Russia. Today, our fear is Syria, Iran, Israel, Gaza, Afghanistan, problems that were conseque
this is my number one favorite Atari game. every day I play this on my 2600 for 2 hours..... until I go play adventure or dodge em' or another Atari game. also I never knew you could blow up your own City in missile command on the Atari 2600. also I use a normal Atari 2600 controller instead of a track ball.
i often spend many an hour playing missile command with bezerk, asteriods and donkey kong. the sounds in haunted house scare the shit out of me though...
The future was known all along. They programmed a game set in 2021 where the Palestinians shot rockets to Israel and their iron dome is the middle command.
I liked the arcade version and Atari 7800 better than this one. In those versions you also have shoot down the enemy planes and killer satellites, which are sadly missing here.

John Huffington Why do you say that?
John Huffington Game haters launching ICBMs at gamers. My bad.

This is my favorite Atari 2600 game!!!!
The effect of your gun station ot whatever it is blowing up when you lose is just awesome.

I like that nuclear sound and video flash effect at the end of the game. That was probably my favorite part hehe
Your intro theme always has me singing, you can dance if you want too. You can leave your friends behind.

Shows how such a simple idea can kick much ass
Awesome as always. And you are very right about how this is one arcade game that ported over to the Atari 2600 very well.
ahh i remember my atari 2600 the best of its kind and time
Mark you and me share a love of Atari 2600
ahh the 1980's
I remember playing this on the Arcade or NES? I cant remember but it was fun.

I believe the type of modem you're referring to is technically called an acoustic coupler.
"That rubber thing"= acoustic coupler.
Great review btw-
I used to play this game a long time ago.
I just bought this game and a 2600😁 in 2018
Brilliant commentary.
"Terminator 2" brought me here!
i often spend many an hour playing missile command with bezerk, asteriods and donkey kong.
the sounds in haunted house scare the shit out of me though...
one thing I'll never forget about this game is when my mom asked me if the enemy of this game was Saddam Hussein. I played this game in the early 90s
@doogrisa 1995 i was kinda late to get it
If you have any type of iDevice, you could get Atari's greatest hits and buy all those games!
@atm94404 yes but he also co-founded PF Magic which made the crap game 3D Ballz.Wen he was in Atari he also worked on the Space Invaders port
The future was known all along. They programmed a game set in 2021 where the Palestinians shot rockets to Israel and their iron dome is the middle command.
I loved this game too although it's weird how you could never actually win and the game just contiunes til everything is destroyed.
A strange game... the only winning move is not to play.
Ah, classic video game sound effects: dakadakadakadakadakadakadaka... dak dak dak dak dak dak....
Nice review, although I utterly hated MissileCommand back in the day... still do actually hehe
this game and the arcade version are so hard on your phone
I liked the arcade version and Atari 7800 better than this one. In those versions you also have shoot down the enemy planes and killer satellites, which are sadly missing here.
there's still no 7800 version, you meant the Atari 5200.
Step 1 Pause the video
Step 2 Click outside the video
Step 3 Type 1980
Step 4 Enjoy!
Please review the sequel to ths game "M.A.D." For the 2600.It was made by US Games, not Atari, and isnt as good as MC, bt it is fun.
ah, Demon Attack! sweet!D
i actually reccomend the atari flashback 1,2 or 2+ better (but not 3)
Cold War cheesy goodness!!!!
Type 1-9-8-0 and watch the magic!
@InecomCompany ahh yes the good old days im 19 btw
Wouldn't it have been more fun to launch nuclear attacks in a video game?
this is a very funny REVIEW!!!
i love WAR GAMES.
great review. i actually disliked the game, but fun review!
“Now that the Cold War is over”
… who’s gonna tell him?
You should be prosecuted for treason for your lackluster defense at 2:22!
who else thinks some that all this is missing is some rush playing in the background. Chuck anyone?
I don't get it..... You avoided shooting some things. LOL.
and even get another 99 atari games for 10$ or 5$
and use an icade joystick
radiation is just a myth.
I can say still good game though for this getting to reality not as great.
if you are on chrome type in 1980
thank me later
