On the Atari 2600 version of Moon Patrol, the music can be turned on and off with the difficulty switches. The programmer included this option because some people find the continuous loop of music annoying. I'm one of those who love the little ditty. I "chair dance" to it a bit while playing! :)
Im gonna show my age here.. but... I still have this game. If you change the difficulty A-B switch on the back of your 2600, the music will turn on or off :) It is a catchy tune.. that I still remember after 20 years!!!!!
14 years on! I've still got my 'little Atari' (small and big rainbow stripe Jrs and a six switch VCS) and I still have Moon Patrol which I bough with my birthday money in late 1988... That and H.E.R.O. Great memories, I need to go get it all out of the attic asap, it was stil working about 2 years ago anyway!
The soundtrack that you remember is available when you flip the Left Difficulty Switch on the 2600. But I agree--this is a good translation of Moon Patrol (considering the 2600's limitations).
Yep. I found it out by accident one day: "The LEFT DIFFICULTY switch can be used to turn off the background MOON PATROL music when placed in the A position. The RIGHT DIFFICULTY switch can be used to select either two moving speeds or three moving speeds. Set the switch to B for three speeds. set it to A for two speeds." My mom always made me turn off the music, because it annoyed her :)
I was thinking of the 5200 version that had music - that played over and over and OVER. I got so tired of that song! But now it brings back memories...
this version of the game does have a soundtrack, you have to set the left difficulty switch to expert. the right difficulty switch controls the difficulty.
The best part of these reviews is I keep checking this big atari lot I won, and most of the games are in it :) I'm hunting for a good price on Montezuma's Revenge and Tapper though.
What is the name of the music you used at the first screen of the game in this video? Is it one of the stock original songs from fresh music? If it is, I may have missed it and I need to know what the name is so I can find it.
holy crap i remember this game from the arcade. thanks for the memories. now i think id play it for 10 minutes and throw it in the trash. but back in the day it was pretty cool
In the arcade version there was a catchy tune that played and when your lunar buggy blew up the tires fell off and bounced along the ground. Also the arcade version had more cartoony graphics and the background would change from mountains to a city to something else instead of just being mountains the whole time.
What's funny is the Pause button on the 7800 is actually the 2600's Color/B&W switch. I think a slight mod is needed to keep the switch in another position.
LOL! reminds me of when i was 6 years old - man games have gone from this to need for speed! Honest i can remember most games for the atari and commodore 64 they were great in their day. Moon patrol was really fun and frustrating especially when the rocket came from the back and had to jump and then shoot it while trying to avoid craters.
I remember that was the first game i played in the middle of 1980's in my uncle's house that was the first time i discovered the existence of video games but my parents didn't buy the console for me
I had the 2600 version, and it had music. It was a little tune that would just loop over and over again. Actually.. I think I still have this game in a box somewhere. I think the difficulty switch turned the music on and off.
Fair point, but it only takes one infestation by cheese-eating space worms to ruin it for everyone. We should erect a protection shield around the moon while it is still pure!
Yeah this game is boss, I was playing it earlier. It also felt like one of the most unique games back in the day when I was a kid. The little ditty that plays is pretty catchy too. I may not have found it if it wasn't mentioned in the comments.
The difficulty switches control whether the music plays. I had the game for weeks back in 1983 before I realized I could turn the music off and on. I had the version where the difficulty switches were on the back of the unit and didn't even realize they were there for almost a year. This had a negative impact on my gaming experience, because the flying saucers in Asteroids didn't show up until I discovered the switches!
Whoa, I never realized that Lt. Barclay was played by same actor as Mad Murdock on the A-team! Now remembering I watched both many times I feel a little dumb.
Always dissing ET on the 2600. You know, we gamers loved Raiders of the Lost Ark and ET back in the day! Anyway, Moon Patrol was such a cool and imaginative arcade game, even if poorly ported to the 2600. If you get the chance, check out this reboot of the game for the PC. It's called Moon Patrol: New Path!: archive.org/details/Moon_Patrol_-_New_Path
I like the Atari 2600 versions of Moon Patrol, Battle zone, Asteroids, and Super Cobra. I don't care for the Atari 2600 versions of Pac-Man and Ms. Pac-Man, or Misslie Command.
Well, if we assume the moon is made of cheese in the game as per real life, it must have gone old after being left out of the fridge for countless millennia. It goes a freakish green shade, and starts to smell really, really badly. It seems like the most logical explanation.
too bad they didnt have the music on the 2600 version. i had it for C64, and the music was the same as arcade though SID sounding. i imagine there was music for the 7800 version (a guess), and if the 2600 and 7800 shared the same sound chip - wonder why not the 2600 version sported no soundtrack.

What about the moon patrol music?? That was the most iconic thing about this game!
You can turn it on with the difficulty switch. This answer is 6 years late though.
One of my 2600 favorites. I played this game to death as a kid.
Great review.
that game definitely has a music track.
yep, one of the best on the 2600 actually.
The soundtrack that you remember is available when you flip the Left Difficulty Switch on the 2600.
But I agree--this is a good translation of Moon Patrol (considering the 2600's limitations).
Brilliant, everyone can relate to a moon patroler trying to get home in time to catch A-team
over 1 min before the video actually starts, man utube has changed a lot over the years....decades?

In my memory, the grafic was much more beautyful :D
this version of the game does have a soundtrack, you have to set the left difficulty switch to expert. the right difficulty switch controls the difficulty.
Beautyful! One of my favourite Game when I was a kid...
What is the name of the song used in the beginning of the review?
That is the perfect back story for moon patrol
One thing I love about your reviews is the schweet music you use.
The best part of these reviews is I keep checking this big atari lot I won, and most of the games are in it :)
I'm hunting for a good price on Montezuma's Revenge and Tapper though.
Moon Patrol and Frostbite 🥶 were my favorite 2600 games and Decalthon too

And i forgot, it's like a 5200 with the awesome 2600 joystick control.
Eat that!
I love it when a plan comes together ;-)
Moon Patrol in the arcade was a fantastic game but I must admit I really did enjoy the Atari2600 version for home. I played this game alot!
30 years ago so cool
awesome! more pre-1999 games!
There is a sound track in the 2600 version you had to set the difficulty switch to either A or B to get the music
They actually were working on an A-Team video game for the Atari 2600 in 1984,but it was never released.
LOL! reminds me of when i was 6 years old - man games have gone from this to need for speed! Honest i can remember most games for the atari and commodore 64 they were great in their day. Amazing game for this system! Got it to play on my 2600 plus
I remember that was the first game i played in the middle of 1980's in my uncle's house that was the first time i discovered the existence of video games but my parents didn't buy the console for me
Hello Friend !!
You must adjust diffuculty to "A" mode and
soundtrack will be activated...
i really liked the music in the first minutes of the review. Can you pls tell me the name?
This looks pretty cool. I need to give this a shot.
I had the 2600 version, and it had music. It was a little tune that would just loop over and over again. Actually.. I think I still have this game in a box somewhere.
I think the difficulty switch turned the music on and off.
Can someone explain to me the controls? Cause theres only one button and a stick on the controller.
@anthonywastrinh
According to Wikipedia, the MOS 6507 is an 8-bit CPU.
The difficulty controls whether the music plays or not
Fair point, but it only takes one infestation by cheese-eating space worms to ruin it for everyone. We should erect a protection shield around the moon while it is still pure!
I played that on a 2600 hooked up to a black & white TV.
Yeah this game is boss, I was playing it earlier. It also felt like one of the most unique games back in the day when I was a kid.
The little ditty that plays is pretty catchy too. I may not have found it if it wasn't mentioned in the comments.
You have to switch your difficulty switch over for sound
My moon patrol cartridge has music! Why doesn't yours?

Moon Patrol for the 5200 has the music backround..
Thanks for posting this. Really fun, addictive game.
This video was released exactly 10 years ago to the day!
There's moisture vaporators on the moon?
This game had a 12-bar blues progression soundtrack.
Whoa, I never realized that Lt. Barclay was played by same actor as Mad Murdock on the A-team! Now remembering I watched both many times I feel a little dumb.
Mark you should re-review this game on the atari with the kick ass music!
hard to believe u played it as a kid.... how come u dono how to activate the music?
your videos are cool tho
great review

I Liked this Game so much
Some games just should not be played again here in the modern era. It rocked in the arcade, but not so much on the 2600.
The original Atari Moon Patrol game has music. The rom for PC which is what is being used here does not.
The funniest thing would have been Mr. T attempting to throw someone through a bullet proof or plexiglass window.
Hey Mark dude...ur playing the wrong version. U want the atari 800 xl version with the music and stuff. It's more awesome
Left difficulty switch turns the music on and off.
I like the Atari 2600 versions of Moon Patrol, Battle zone, Asteroids, and Super Cobra. I don't care for the Atari 2600 versions of Pac-Man and Ms. Pac-Man, or Misslie Command.
I love this game!!!
But space is freezing! So maybe it's still good, grab some wine, we're going to the moon guys!
Voltron and the A-Team rule!
Maybe the best arcade conversion for the 2600.
Its a protype for the Mako from Mass Effect 1.
@gszx1337 I thought it was 4 bit?
There IS a sound track. Try the option buttons.
Do DEET dee doo de doo doo DEET...
gracias por recodar mi infancia :)

It seems like the most logical explanation.
Jees, where's the Skip Intro button?
this was y fav atari game
I had a VCR in 1983. I always watched A team no matter what. Sorry.
hahaha - the A - Team, what a glorious reason for a game...
too bad they didnt have the music on the 2600 version. i had it for C64, and the music was the same as arcade though SID sounding. i imagine there was music for the 7800 version (a guess), and if the 2600 and 7800 shared the same sound chip - wonder why not the 2600 version sported no soundtrack.
You push up on the joystick to jump and you press the button to fire.
Mark from the future sent me here ._.
This is AtariLand: logic has no place here!
Well, dying of thirst on the moon won't be an option. :)
can you be a teetotaler and still be a fan of CGR? lol
woah i came from the future to see it
I Liked it so ich this Game
Yeah, great game, but i use my 600xl, that badasskicker has a keyboard, and Face is intergalactic.
nice vid
tan tan tin tirin tirin tiiiirin tan tan tin tirin tirin tiriiin,,,tan taran taran taranran.......
No. They had a 5200 version though.
interesting
...but he has the same attitude!
Grr. *shakes fist*
@gszx1337 k. thx
I pitty da fool that dont play Moon Patrol.
lol im sure you could have figured it out man.
your right it does look like it has feet
The Atari 2600 has an 8-bit CPU.
But there's no oxygen in space.
lol u have to jump soo damn early.
hahahahah
Great game but this sucks on the Atari 2600. Big time. Any of the 8-bit versions (C-64 comes to mind) are far superior.
I hated that show. :P
The iPod would also be loaded with the entire Pink Floyd catalogue.
