Today I've become fond of some I didn't have back then: Midnight Magic, Yars' Revenge, Star Voyager. And some modern games from the remarkably active 2600 homebrew scene.

I went back to play Miniature Golf a few years ago, to see if I could improve my best score. I had marked where to put the cursor in the manual to get a chance to make a hole-in-one. I succeeded, but couldn't beat the logbook challenge for Golf. With the good graphics in Activision games, it's too bad they didn't make a version instead of making their own version of checkers.

    Some of my favorites;
Tunnel Runner - Great 3D maze game. Other games tried to do 3D, but they were often a confusing mess. Tunnel Runner got it just right. I'd rate the game as perfect if they had managed to use a unique image for the back of the monsters, rather than using the same image for when they're facing you and when they're moving away.
Starmaster - More playable than the 2600 version of Star Raiders.
Phaser Patrol - Another Star Raiders clone for the Starpath Supercharger.
Solaris - Impressive game. To be honest, I never got very far into it, but I enjoyed playing it.
Robot Tank - Better than the 2600 Battlezone. The way the enemy tanks seemed to be 3D impressed me at the time.

Raiders was ahead of its time as an adventure/puzzle game. The absolute sheer joy when after days of playing and exploring you'd find something "new," even if you didn't have the context to understand how it fit into the game itself. Maybe it was important, maybe it was a red herring. I remember excitedly running into my parents room while they were both sleeping, screaming because I had found the map room... and then a few days later when I discovered the "sun" rising in it... No walkthrough guides, no internet... just trial and error. A fully immersive game that took a LOT of time and effor to "beat."

I ended up meeting another kid at my apartment complex who had an Atari, and we played Defender and Asteroids for hours. I felt like I was in a time capsule or something. Recently I took my son to a local restaurant, and they had an Atari 2600 hooked up to an old TV for the customers to play. I showed him how the old video games used to look (he grew up with XB360 and PS4) and he actually was really interested. I had to go out and find a 2600 at a retro game store so we could own one. I didn't realize that it was even before the AV cables were a thing, so now I have to find an adapter or a TV old enough to play it lol.

Here's my list, based upon how much I enjoyed the games and how often I'd play them. Something most younger people don't realize is that in the late 70's and early 80's, no one called it the 2600...it was just Atari. Just like a few years later no one said NES, it was just Nintendo.
Enough rambling (get off of my lawn!), here's my top 10:
    10. Circus Atari
    9. Space Invaders
    8. Demon Attack
    7. H.E.R.O.
    6. River Raid
    5. Stargate
    4. Pitfall!
    3. StarMaster
    2. Yar's Revenge
    And...drum roll please...
#1. Adventure - One my favorite albums is Queen The Game released in 1980 featuring....you guessed it, Dragon Attack. It was a perfect blend of music and technology.
    Now, go read a book!😃

I only found out a few years ago Pitfall can be beat by collecting all 32 treasures before time runs out which is why only certain tunnels should be used and touching wrong items drains the time. It's not easy to finish and requires strategy and planning. Both Pitfalls can be beaten. I would also include Jr. Pacman and Millipede as honorable mentions but good list 👍👍

Corrections: Combat was not single player. Pole Position did not have multiple tracks for the 2600 version. Space invaders had little similarity to the arcade. I like the idea, but I don’t like one rushing these videos out just to be the first without actual care for the system and history.
